La Spezia is a industrial and portuary city. It is definely not a nice place, it is only the easier place in order to to visit the "5 terre". The hotel is nice, clean, very confortable with a team at the top level. The surrounding of the hotel are awfull. If you need to stay in La Spezia, Hotel Ghironit is certainly a very good place, but if you can avoid La Spezia, do it.

Good point to visit Cinque Terre. A bit tricky to find when coming from autostrada but well signed. The free shuttle bus to the train station is a big convenience! Far from the centre of La Spezia but there are couple of good restaurants nearby!

Very comfortable hotel. The shuttle bus picks guests up and drops them off at the La Spezia station. The area where the hotel is situated has limited possibilities for dining. Good air conditioning, good breakfast, very helpful and accommodating staff, from the front desk to the drivers to the breakfast servers.

Hotel far from town, but NO problem. Free shuttle to boat and train for Cinque Terre. Free shuttle to train station which is just 2 blocks from main shopping area. Able to walk from station all the way to harbor in less than 30 minutes. Excellent English speaking staff with lots of knowledge of surrounding area. Big room, great breakfast.

For an alleged 4 star hotel, the room was very dated and the bathroom was in need of replacement or major renovation - mould stains around the shower and the door didn't close properly meaning that water leaked out all over the floor. Generally, the hotel is a bit tired & dated. I suppose what do you expect for EUR125 a night for a room sleeping 4 (2 kids)? The staff at the front desk were very helpful with directions to train station to access Cinque Terre. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the station or the port at set times each day - you need to book it in advance at the front desk. The driver was very friendly and was always on time to pick us up. Not sure if we would stay here again, wouldn't say no but wouldn't automatically go back.

Ghironi is a straight forward hotel, offering good value and a really good base particularly if you are on a driving holiday. While we were there the trains and boats were out of service, but they do offer a free shuttle bus so you can easily get to the train station or ferry terminal. Good recommendations from staff who were quite helpful, availability of car parks were appreciated. Rooms were simple, a little dated, but we were out & about most of the time. Incluson of breakfast was great as were the internet points. The area around the hotel is not memorable, but it makes for an inexpensive and convenient base to get to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere. I would recommend if this is the purpose of your trip to La Spezia.

We stayed overnight in Hotel Ghironi in order to explore the Cinque Terre. We were met by the shuttle bus and friendly driver. The hotel is a little out of the way but on arriving at about 9.30 am the receptionist had us checked into our room early, bags dropped and on to a free shuttle in order to catch the boat within 15 mins. She also sold us our Chinque Terre cards and planned our very short stay. There was no wifi as advertised in the room but the availability of computers and free Internet was good. The staff are exceptional. The train to the first town is only 5 mins from La Spezia so although not staying right in the Cinque Terre the efficient shuttle bus is great. Value for money pretty good. I recommend taking the boat all the way to the furthest town and then take a train or walk between the rest. You get great views that way. Also if walking is an issue just take the trains between the towns and you already have seen the great views from the boat. Buses are easy to use and there is a great pasticceria just near the bus which is very cheap and good.

We spent only one night at this hotel, it is a good base for a short visit to Cinque Terre. The free parking and the shuttle service to the train station are the strengths of the hotel. (However, you can use the shuttle service only if you arrange in advance at the reception. So, if your train has a delay on the way back, you may miss your shuttle to the hotel.) The staff is very helpful, gives some advice, train / boat timetables and maps on the Cinque Terre region. Our room was spacious and well-equipped. Nevertheless the walls must be paper-thin, we were woken up by our neighbours in the early morning. To sum up, the hotel offers an acceptable service, but the price-value rate is awful compered to other Italian hotels at the same level. Being close to the Cinque Terre means a higher rate of prices.

At the conciergerie we can buy tickets to go to Cinque Terre including the time-table of traims that run among the 5 charming villages.

The first impression was not a good one as the hotel is located in a very noisy, polluted area. The breakfast was disappointing as they didn't even had real Italian Coffee, unless you ordered one at the bar for which you had to pay extra for. The ceiling of the room was covered with flies (smached to the ceiling)... La Spezia isn't a touristic city and if you're a tourist wanting to discover the area of Liguria/Toscany, it's better to book a hotel elsewere.

we stayed here as a base for Cinque Ports. Cinque Ports were fantastic. This hotel was a good base for us, was clean, the staff pleasant and kind and helpful. But the hotel is old, very tired and in an industrial area. We didnt care much as we just went out to the Cinque Ports all day and just came back to sleep. Dont stay here thinking its plush or a great hotel or you will be sorely disappointed. It also worked out to be the most expensive hotel we stayed at in our 4 week trip around Italy - more exy than Venice and Rome ! - so I felt a little sad about value for money - but this is mostly due to the fact that they had no family rooms left, and we needed 2 separate rooms. breakfast good enough.

Hotel Ghironi is clean but very basic hotel. It is a surprise why it has got 4 stars! Maximum 3 I say. Although our room was clean and the bathroom was rather new and good there was no clue of beautiness and luxury in the room specially the paint of the wall was awfull! It is very far from central station (12 minutes by car) and is located in an industrial area close to harbour with no access to the sea! There is a shuttle service in the hotel which has compensated the low service partly and is very useful. But shuttle stops working after 8pm. So do not come back late!!

This was a great hotel, but the neighborhood was a little scary -- run-down, graffiti everywhere and pretty much deserted, but that meant the room was very quiet, which is a plus. The man at the front desk wasn't friendly or welcoming when we checked in, but, other than that, the stay was very nice. The room exceeded expectations. It was very clean and modern, had nice furniture and a spacious bathroom with marble floors. The air conditioning worked very well, which was not always the case in other hotels we stayed at. Breakfast was excellent.

We were amazed at the hotel's proximity to the Vatican Museum and our family could walk virtually anywhere from the hotel.

This hotel is not in the town centre, there is a bus but this is not regular. Other people on this site speak of a free shuttle service to the hotel but this was never mentioned to us. A taxi to the station will cost you around 10-15 euros depending on the driver. During our stay there was a funfair directly across the road which played loud music until late. The room was clean but the bed was hard with only one pillow resembling a pancake. Instead of curtains they have come up with the ingenius idea of installing roller-doors on the outside of the windows which are very difficult to use and don't block out all the light anyway. The breakfast was adequate. If you have the misfortune of staying in La Spezia do yourself a favour and choose a hotel which is at least in the town centre - and if you are thinking of going out for dinner on a Saturday night you must make reservations as everywhere we went was full.

We were there for 7 nights which was a little too long since we saw everything. The breakfast was assume and the rooms were huge. They always filled my water jug with ice every morning so I could have cold water all day. In order to enjoy our wine they gave us real wine glasses when we asked. Instead of plastic glasses in the room they could use glass ones. Buses were easy to catch and they had the tickets right there. Can take an L or an S bus to get there from the train station which cost .90E. For 3E could ride the buses all day and for 5E could ride the bus to Portavenere and Lerci and all over town which was great. They tried to help us with a long distance phone call but our calling card never did work. When we left my zipper on my carryon broke so they called the handyman and he came with some rope to tie around my bag so at least I was able to get home without everything falling out. Never ran out of breakfast and shuttle to the train station and boat ride which was nice. There was a market not too far away and also several restaurants within walking distance. Would recommend staying there

Hotel staff were extremely helpful in assisting us to make the most of our time in La Spezia. Hotel provided shuttle buses and tour packs associated with touring Cinque Terre's 5 towns. Not the best area for conveniences like shops or restaurants etc. We were disappointed that the local taxi service found it necessary to rip us off by doubling the price when we needed a taxi at 6am to take us to train station.

The facility is older and close to the shipyards which makes it a little out of the way but shuttles are provided to the train station which was close to the market area of the city so very handy. The Ghironi is actually off a alley and difficult to locate. It is somewhat remote from the pier and the train station and the shuttle service provided by the hotel was almost never available. So each time you left the hotel or returned it cost about 20 euros for a cab. There is no restaurant in the hotel and few restaurants in the vicinity and restaurant hours are limited. The Mitali was disappointing to say the least. However, two small family restarants nearby were good and reasonable. If choosing La Spezia for a visit to cinque terra, it much wiser to book a hotel near the pier or the train station.

Our family of four chose to stay in La SPezia because we had read it was a convenient place to visit cinque terra from. Initially we thought we had made a mistake in choosing Hotel Ghironi due to its location which is not particularly central to the city centre or the port unless you have a car. Although we did have a car, the Hotel turned out to be great as it provides a free shuttle to and from the port in order to catch the day boat tour to Cinque Terra. A local restaurant (very close to the hotel) - Mitile (spelling??) - specializes in muscles & is MUST. They offer a shuttle to the boat & train stations. The morning breakfast begins at 7:30 & stays stocked throughout the serving period. Overall, the hotel & staff is well worth the stay. We would definitely go back!

This was a very well run hotel with competent staff. Ideal spot to visit the Cinque Terre as the hotel has a shuttle bus which goes to the train station and then picks up at certain times. The breakfast was also very plentiful. There was good free parking on the grounds and the hotel was located very close to the city of La Spezia.

The hotel was as described, but the location is not very good. It is in an old and run down industrial area and not a lot of choices for eating. The suttle service to the train sation is very handy.

At first I was very disappointed with the location as I thought it would be much closer to the train station and didn't realize how industrial the area was. However, the hotel itself and the staff were excellent. Once we learned to use the shuttle, we were able to access the areas we were interested in touring.

Hotel Ghironi is a good spot to visit La Spezia and, specially, Cinque Terre. The hotel is pleasant and staff is very helpful; we had a problem with our rented car, and people from staff helped marvelously. Hotel decoration is very nice: the owner is an art collector. Surroundings are not very turistic, but within walking distance there are two or three very good restaurants. Breakfast at hotel is also very good. I would suggest free internat for costumers, as I´ve found in other hotels. It´s a place to stay again.

The hotel is very nice, with parking and full breakfast included in the room rate. Our family suite was spacious. The surroundings of the hotel do not cater to tourists, but the downtown area of La Spezia is a short drive away. It is a very convenient location to visit Cinque Terre. We recommend the ferry, rather than driving to view Cinque Terre to reduce the amount of walking up and down hills.

We had a pleasant stay at Ghironi Hotel. Staff was very helpful and kind. When we checked in, they gave us a box with maps and information about the region of "Cinque Terre", as well the schedulle of a shuttle to railway station. Finally, we got hot croissants with hot chocolate and juice at the last day because we checked out before the breakfast time. I'd like to thank the staff and strongly reccomend the hotel.

Good family friendly hotel. Good services & facilities best of which was parking (for us). Hotel offers free pick-up & drop-off to the port/railway station for Cinque Terre. Our stay was 2 nights but we would like to have stayed longer. There were some good eating places close by but most were in La Spezia & not within wlaking distance.

The hotel is on walking distance from the busstop from where you can go to the center of La Spezia or the beach. Also there is a shuttleservice which takes you to the trainstation from where you can go to Cinque Terre. The breakfast buffet is very good.

Very clean and neat. It is not a "vacation" hotel, but is located in a city environment. However, it was very, very convenient to visit the Cinque Terre from the hotel. The hotel provided a timely courtesy van to take us to and pick us up from the train station for our exploration of Cinque Terre. Morning breakfast (included) was very good and plentiful. The desk representative was very helpful in providing information for our day trips.

Definitly, this is not a four stars hotel. Thats malicious. The rooms is a 3 stars room, the furnitures are very poor and old, without style. The pictures of the lobby of the hotel, in the web it doesn´t reflect the rooms.

The hotel is way too far from the train station. Fortunately, they offer a shuttle to the station but it is not a "on-demand" service. It is only offered in the morning and in the evening but nothing in between. Nothing interesting to see around the hotel besides a huge industrial complex and a freeway! I would only recommend this hotel if you are desperate for a place to stay but stay at a hotel near the train station.

A good hotel, but was hard to find coming from the train station on the bus. Got lost but when we got there the hotel was fine. Staff very hewlpful and used shuttle to get to the train station when we left. Breakfast very good, plenty of food for adults and kids. La Spezia was a good location to use as a base for day trip to cinque terre.

Hotel Ghironi was just what we hoped for. We stayed one night and toured Cinque Terre the next day. The staff sold us our tickets to Cinque Terre and provided us with all of the information we needed to sucessfully tour the area. The hotel has a shuttle that took us free of charge to the train station to begin our tour. Breakfast in the nice common room was the usual Italian buffet breakfast. It was just fine and the room was nice.

We booked this hotel expecting a 4 star hotel. The rooms (we had three booked) would be lucky to be rated a two star based on North American Standards. The rooms were large, but very old and tired. The location was ok, since the hotel provided a shuttle to the train station for our trip to Cinque Terre. The hotel is situated on the main road exiting the autostrade. The breakfast was fine and the staff friendly. The photos I saw for the hotel shows only the lobby area, which should have been a clue that the rooms are not at the same level.

This hotel was wonderful. The staff were kind and helpful, breakfast was a nice spread, the rooms were spacious and clean. We traveled in Italy, Germany and to Paris, and this was probably the nicest and cheapest hotel we stayed at (Price proabably b/c it isn't a big tourist stop). There was a free shuttle to the train station to see Cinque Terra (which is way we were there). I would definitely stay here again. iMitili was a great restaurant behind the hotel about 100 meters.

The reason for our stay in La Spezia was to be able to take the boat to Cinque Terre. The hotel offered a complimentary shuttle to the boat dock and a return shuttle from the train station. They were most helpful in giving us the information we needed. The area around the hotel was not very attractive and we didn't eat near the hotel---we arrived early enough to have time to drive down to Portavenere for dinner. But the room was very spacious and included an area for doing business in your room---an area as you entered the room had a desk, chair, lamp and WiFi capabilities. The breakfast room was large and the array of food was very nice. The shuttle to the boat dock was right on time and the driver was courteous and helpful.

The staff was very competent and friendly. The location was not the best, but I knew that going in. La Spezia, in general, is not the greatest city in terms of its beauty and surroundings. The shuttle service to Cinque Terre was very convenient (and free). The rooms were great and the breakfast was one of the best I've ever had in Italy. This is a great hotel if you have a car. Make sure to come in on the Autostrada if you want to find it easily however. It will be on your left side and you will need to make a U-turn after you pass it. If you want to drive around La Spezia, good luck. We spent an hour trying to find the hotel again after we took a little drive to scout out possible restaurants (not many). This city is one of the most poorly designed I've ever seen when it comes to driving (too many one-way streets and industrial zones that dead-end).

Ghironi was a 4-star hotel, on the far side of central city,so location was inconvenient being further from train station than we needed - this was our own fault though. Hotel ran courtesy coach, but departure times restricted trains you could catch to Cinque Terre, as they didn't always match. Service could be friendlier - varied a bit. Unclear directions to nearest bus. Suggest more details go up on website, e.g. bus number & destination, to and from train station. We only saw one bus at train station, & driver looked blank when we showed him Ghironi address! Obviously not the right bus, so we ended up using taxi. Had superb meal at fish restaurant only 5 minutes' walk away, the Mitili (I think)- recommended by hotel staff.

The room was spacious and very convenient. The staff was very friendly, polite, helpfull and spoke fluent English (rare in Italy). They went out of their way to assist us. Breakfast was very good, more than we expected. The hotel is quite a distance from the station but the shuttle service (you have to book in advance)was very good, takes 10 min to the train station/ 5 to the boat marina. We found the hotel a good place for touring the 5-Terre and suroundings. We highly recommend the Ghironi hotel.

Hotel is excellent in every way except for location. There are two railroad stations in La Spezia. If you arrive at La Spezia (Station Centrale FS), take the bus L or S. See http://www.atclaspezia.it/ for a bus map. Ride until you're on Viale San Bartolomeo and look for the Hertz Agency. Hotel is on Via Del Tino - one block from Hertz. Once you find the hotel all is well.
