Hotel New Era is a place for budget conscious travelers and is conveniently located to all the major sites in Sultanahmet. Pluses: the owner Omar, is an extremely kind person, eager to help, and always makes himself available for late night arrivals (he and his wife are the only staff for this 8 room establishment) or early morning departures. I couldn't have asked for a greater effort on his part. Also, the traditional Turkish breakfast his wife prepares each morning is delicious, and especially considering how small the place is, there is a lot of variety in the fresh and cooked items that are served. It's enough to last one until dinnertime. There is a high standard of cleanliness. Minuses: you need to be prepared with a Turkish phrase guide to get the most out of Omar's help. The walls between the rooms are paper thin so it is possible to hear every word of your next door neighbors conversations, and if they raise their voices, you might easily be awakened. The rooms are exceedingly small (even by European single room standards) and minimally furnished, with just a bed and a closet, no nightstand or desk. If those minuses are not off-putting, you will be in a convenient location at a fairly low price. There are many hotels in the area, but this one is not on a touristic street, so you will have a more "local" experience. Btw, there is a very good local Turkish restaurant a few blocks away--excellent traditional food at low prices: Şirvan

Overall a good stay, staff were friendly and rooms were clean. The outside is a bit run down and when we first arrived we thought we were in the slums but the location is in a very central area and only a 5min walk to the blue mosque and loads of restaurants. Rooms are very small but adequate and the price is reasonable at 50euros a night. We only had two issues, the walls are thin and we could hear everyone who entered the hotel and walk up the stairs and into their rooms. Also really nit picking here but I dint see a single smoke alarm in the whole hotel, it made me feel a little bit uneasy.

The location is fantastic - less than 10 minutes' walk to the Blue Mosque. Our room was small but adequate, very clean, and very good for the price. We stayed on the ground floor but had to climb four floors up a steep spiral staircase to the breakfast terrace, which had a lovely view over the Sea of Marmara. This hotel would definitely not suit anyone with mobility problems. The staff were friendly and willing but at least one was not well trained and gave us the wrong wifi password! Before we arrived I had sent an enquiry to them via the Venere website about airport transfer and never received a reply - though they did arrange the return shuttle for us. In short, if you want a cheap clean room close to all the major sights, Hotel New Era is fine. There are lots of fancier ones all around but they no doubt cost a lot more.
