Welcoming staff (particularly after a delayed arrival complicated by a taxi strike), tourist maps available, mini fridge in rm (for guest use; it's not a minibar); minimal bath amenities; adequate breakfast. Finding the hotel was a challenge. We stayed only 2 nights and had to depart before 2d-day breakfast, so our experience is limited. (Reservation made from Greece, but we're from the US.)

Hotel Kastro is a perfect choice for a holiday in Heraklion: the position is such that in 1 minute by foot you are in the city center, and in 5 minutes you can take buses to go around the island. Staff is of unique kindness!

Excellent location, close to waterfront and main squares. nice restaurants and grocery store nearby. Great large rooftop sitting area with view of water. Good breakfast. They gave us a tasty bottle of Raki when we checked out. We would definitely return there.

I was here with a bunch of people to attend a conference, and with the hotel completely full and everyone using shower at the same time, there was a bit of a problem with the water pressure. Otherwise, everything was fine. Good location next to a lot of "tavernas" with amazing food and extremely nice waiters, within walking distance of the port and the town centre. Friendly staff, comfortable rooms and a reasonable breakfast. At the special price offered by Venere, it was excellent value. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Although the hotel is in a back street it is only 10 mins walk to both the port and the bus station. It is only a 5 min.walk to what I presume was the centre of town where no cars are allowed (motor bikes make up for them!). The TV in the room was great, nicely placed to watch and lots of English speaking channels.

The Hotel is located in a narrow street in the centre of the old town; our room was really very nice, with a... wonderful bathroom, a balcony, air conditioned, frigo-bar. In a few words, a four-stars accomodation in a three-stars hotel!

What a nice surprise! Hotel Kastro is clean, quiet, comfortable, and affordable -- all of which are rare things to find in Heraklion. The location is also great. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the port, the center of town, the archaeological museum, and the car rental agencies on 25 August Street. I'd stay here again, absolutely.

Nice hotel in a good location - very close to the historic city center, nightspots, supermarkets, etc. Room was quiet and clean - could have been bigger - but generally good. Shower area was a little small. Buffet breakfast is included in the price - making it great value for money. After suffering lots of processed foods at B&Bs, I greatly appreciated the breakfast options here (wholemeal buns, cheese, croissants, Greek yogurt, etc). Reception staff members are not very warm but knowledgeable and helpful if approached.

This is a beautiful hotel in a less beautiful location, but it is near better areas. The only thing we didn't like was that the air conditioner took forever to cool the room. Also, a motion light was in the entry area & would pop on during the night if we went to the bathroom! The buffet breakfast was very good!

Tutto corrisponde alla pubblicità su internet tranne per il parcheggio: l'hotel ne è sprovvisto. Questo costituisce un problema, considerata l'ubicazione nel centro storico.

My only complaint was the reception trying to push a car rental on me the moment I signed in. Prices weren't any better than those offered at the many rental agencies in the area. She was rather pushy, expecting me to make a commitment right there on the spot. The roof top patio was a lovely spot to watch the sunset.

Great pad for anyone being in Iraklion. Friendly, nice staff, and updated rooms, though the shiny new philips flatscreen didn't work. As with most Greek hotel rooms, though, the beds are terrible and you can get a swamp gas smell (maybe they don't have plumbing in Greece?)

Only two (or three) rooms on fifth floor have really good view. Even balconies aren't attractive. There are a lot of construction works in close neighbourhood and our room was very noisy from about 9.00am. Breakfast isn't rich and not tasty. Air conditioning effective but awfully smells on "dry" position.Safe in a room costs 5 €. No place in front of the hotel to stop the car and leave baggage. Parking about hundred meters down the street but You have to leave car keys. On the other side, there are only about two hundred meters to shops and nightlife district (but area is quiet by night). Staff was very polite and helpful. Hotel and room were clean, we had only some problems with good water temperature during showering.Free internet!

The hotel's overall condition is satisfactory. The lady at the reception is very competent and helpful. Our room is clean and air-conditioned but the shower case is very small . The hotel is close to the beach and port while a bit far from the bus station to other places.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Kastro in late May 2008. I chose the hotel because the website stated in both Greek and English that it was "next to" the Archaeological Museum. In fact, it is a good 15 minute walk to the Museum. Other than that, the location is very convenient. Our room looked like my college dorm room, with two twin beds and functional furniture. The hair dryer in the bathroom was broken, and there was no outlet in the bathroom that I could use for my own hair dryer. I had to unplug the TV to use my hair dryer and charge my phone, as that was the only outlet in the entire room. On the plus side, breakfast was good in both quality and quantity, and the server was a really nice woman. Unfortunately, the breakfast room is next to the lobby, where the smokers congregate, so the smoke drifts into the breakfast room. We enjoyed the rooftop terrace, with views of the sea and the city. A great place for a glass of wine at sunset.

The location may appear a bit intimidating, but after staying a couple of nights, the area is actually pleasant and pretty central to getting around town. Location is about 10 minutes by taxi from the ferry port and about 20 minutes by taxi from Knossos. The restaurant across the street was unusual in that it didn't have a menu, and they offered a choice of several different meals each night based on what they picked up at the market that day. Food was fresh, delicious, and VERY cheap. We ate there every night. Breakfast at the hotel had good variety. The room was neat and clean, with ample room and a good-sized bathroom. Everything worked. It was quiet, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Couldn't ask for more for the 100 Euros we paid per night.

Room was clean but small. The employee at the reception was very nice. Generous breakfast but the orange juice was awful!! Perfect location near the port which why we selected the hotel. We didn't need a taxi to catch the boat for Santorini. Bars and restaurants near by. The localisation would be the reason why I would recommend the hotel to my friends.

Hotel Kastro is a very nice hotel which not only combines a good quality vs. price relationship but also offers a very qualified staff, a good position in the town and..an amazing breakfast!!! Our room was really nice, with new fornitures, big restroom and a small sweet balcony. All the hotel building is clean and new. The staff supported us in the car rental as well as in suggesting us nice tavernas (some very close to the hotel itself). I do strongly reccomend hotel Kastro because I also experienced different hotels in Crete and etheir the price for an equivalent service was higher or the quality was poorer. Going to Crete? Kastro is the perfect hotel!

Hotel Kastro is in a wierd neighborhood, but then I think much of Iraklio is a wierd neighborhood. It is easy to walk to the center and sights in the town. Parking is not bad at all because there is a very affordable (8 euro/day) lot just 50 meters down the street. The room certainly was exposed to a lot of noise, but then we were there on New Years Eve, so maybe it is not a fair judgement!

Hotel Kastro was surprising. As we drove up, the neighborhood in which it is located looked questionable; however, our room was wonderful. We stayed on the top floor in the room that is surrounded by the outdoor patio (off by itself - I think it was room 513). The room was contemporary, clean and had a wonderful bath. For the price (approximately $100/night), we were extremely pleased. The greeting at check-in left something to be desired (the girl at the desk was not friendly or helpful at all) and we had to park on the street, as no parking was available in the building. Unfortunately, our rental car was hit overnight (along with every other car on the street as well). We would definitely stay there again but next time, we will park in the lot at the end of the street which charges 6 Euros for overnight.

Lonely Planet called it a "cheery B-class hotel". I wouldn't call it "cheery". I don't think I read about it at Veneres web pages. The reception lady was not very welcoming. And my room at 5th floor was facing a sad back side of the hotel. The room and the air con smelled unfresh... But the salon in the reception area was light, modern and nice. And the roof terrasse was very nice. Clientele: business people and couples on a city/shopping week end.
