All the hotel's public areas and guest rooms betray the owner's liking for minimalist avant garde interior design, an impression confirmed by the fact that there is a Finnish Design Shop on site. If you enjoy that classical Scandinavian cool look, then this hotel is just the ticket.
The Hotel Helka also has a beautifully design lobby bar and a restaurant, serving everything from refreshments and light snacks to à la carte Finnish cuisine. You cannot come to Finland without a sauna and this hotel does not disappoint as there is a Finnish sauna and Jacuzzi here, which is scheduled to reopen in March 2009 after renovation. The hotel staff will also take good care of you while you are staying with them, offering a complete same-day laundry and ironing service during the week. Finally, free wireless internet access is available in public areas. With all of this and more for just 3 stars, it has got to be a bargain!

A buffet breakfast is served in the restaurant from 6.30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays, and from 7.30 a.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Sundays.The buffet includes Edam, smoked and cottage cheese, ham, liver paste, a selection of charcuterie, tuna, herring, tomato, cucumber, American salad, crated carrots, peppers, pickled cucumber, scrambled and boiled eggs, porridge, muesli, dried fruit, corn and bran flakes, bread rolls, rice cakes, rye bread, helka bread, butter, lactose-free margarine, berry and fruit salad, Finnish lingonberry pie, biscuits, natural yoghurt, lactose-free milk, full and skimmed milk. Moreover, small croissants and sausages will be served on Mondays, bacon and Karelian pies on Tuesdays, meatballs and bacon on Wednesdays, small croissants and bacon on Thursdays, small sausages and bacon on Fridays, vegetable-cheese patties and meatballs on Saturdays and bacon and meatballs on Sundays.

The Hotel is conveniently close to the train station and the city center, easily accessible. The room is small but clean, tidy and tastefully decorated. Breakfast was an abundant selection of choices both cold and warm dishes, different bread types, fruits, vegetables, juices. Staff was really friendly and coped with my odd requests perfectly.

The hotel is very nice and suitable. Location is convenient, near the railway station, metro station and bus station, in the commercial heart of the city. Rooms are equipped with good LCD TV sets, wi-fi internet is free all over the hotel. Bathroom is clean and modern. The relationship between price and quality is the best I've seen before.

Would definitely stay here again. Excellent value for the money. The best aspect was the competent, accommodating staff, from the personable waiter in the restaurant to the helpful barman, but especially the reception staff who did everything they could to make our stay a good one. Location is within walking distance of museums, shopping, excellent restaurants and the harbor. The design, furnishings and layout never let you forget that you are in Finland. My only complaint was the rundown appearance of the bathroom with traces of mildew. The rest of the experience definitely compensated for this, though.

Beautiful Hotel. unfurtunatelly I ended up in a room where the windows could only be opened partially and I hated it. Ask for a room where you can open the windows. But overall a very nice Hotel.

Room Details
All of the guest rooms in the Hotel Helka sport a modern minimalist interior décor, perfectly in keeping with the rest of the hotel's interiors. Pale wood, fabric and a simple colour scheme combine to create a serene and peaceful ambience. There is also an illuminated mural on the ceiling which add pattern and a flash of colour.You can choose between a Single Room with a wide single bed or a Twin Room with 2 twins. Each room has a small desk and a interactive flat-screen TV with free satellite and pay-per-view channels and internet access. You will also find a shower in your bathroom as well as all the towels, shampoo and soap that you could possibly need. Last, but not least, there is also a free internet access via a modem or data port connection.

How to reach Helka Hotel
By airplaneHelsinki Vantaa Airport: take the bus nos. 415, 451, 615 to the city centre or the Finnair City Bus to downtown Helsinki. All buses arrive at Helsinki Central Railway Station which is only a 10-minute walk from the hotel or a short metro ride from Helsinki Central Station to Kamppi Metro Station, which is only 200 metres/216 yards from the hotel. If you rent a car at the airport, then follow the signs to Helsinki City Center (Keskusta) until you are on road 45 (Tuusulan väylä). Drive for approx. 12.5 km/7.7 miles and take a right turn into Sturenkatu Street, when then turns into Helsinginkatu Street. Take a left turn after the Finnish National Opera into Mannerheimintie Street. Take a right turn after the Houses of Parliament into Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu Street and the Hotel Helka will be on your right-hand side.
By ferry
From Helsinki West Harbour (LÄNSISATAMA): take Hietasaarenkuja Street, then Tullaajankuja Street, Mechelininkatu Street, Rautatiekatu Street and Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu Street, where the hotel is located. Alternatively, take bus no. 15A from West Terminal to the Fredrikinkatu bus stop.
From Helsinki South Harbour (ETELÄSATAMA): take tram 3T from Olymiaterminal to Arkadiankatu Street's Kauppakorkeakoulut tram stop. Walk south along Runeberginkatu Street. Take tram 4 from the Katajanokan terminaali to Mannerheiminkatu Street's Lasipalatsi tram stop. walk east along Arkadiankatu Street and arrive at Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu Street.
