We spent 2 nights there. The place is great, and room was great, but as soon as we get in the bathroom, the fan started working making an amazing whistle: it was not possibile to stop it, so we called the staff, they were not able to stop it, so they gave us a new room, the one in front, with better view, but smaler. In any case they solved the problem, in rougtly 10 minutes. So good. Unfornately in Gubbio the bells of the church ring EVERY 15 minutes, even during the night! So, beeing 100 meters far from the church, you can immagine that you must be very tired to do not ear their sound!

Wake up in thick medieval walls in the middle of this old city clutched to the mountain, hve your breakfast like a duke on the central place of gubbio, enjoy a lucious secret hotel garden - it's all in a day's work at relais ducale. staff is very friendly and competent, spoken nglish is excellent, for unloading and reloading your luggage you have to steer your vehicle through the narrow lanes of gubbio but there is no parking neaby the hotel (best park at the funiculare at the east side city gate).

One of the major reasons for visiting Gubbio was to stay in the Relais Ducale. The hotel's description is a good deal more interesting than reality. Despite paying in advance for a 'Special' room it proved to be rather ordinary. However, as opposed to previous reviewers, we had no difficulty in locating the hotel but I don't feel that the trouble involved in humping bags for what feels like miles is worth the effort. The public areas in the hotel are non existent and there are no services available.

We have seen most of the medieval cities in Umbria; Gubio is without doubt one of the most impressive. Hotel Relais Ducale was a perfect choice for a two day stay in Gubio: with an entrance -- actually the cafe-- located on the main square (the actual hotel is on a small street, the ducale street, where you can only walk behind the entrance) you will not notice anything happening on the square. When we were in Gubio at the beginning of May, the city was really quite. We had a top room in this acient building, which could be reached by a small elevator. The building has two really impressive terraces with flowers and the view over the city is amazing. All in all a romantic place to stay. I was a bit cautious to book the hotel, was some of the reviews mentioned bell ringing of the cathedral all night through. We did hardly noticed it; it is certainly not much different from what you will encounter in any other old city. If you come by car, just park on the main square and don't look for the road of the hotel, as it cannot be reached by car.

Few in America have heard of Gubbio, but it is a hidden gem, offering a wonderful visit off the well-beaten path of more famous locales. Fascinating, scenic old city. Before arriving we heard grumblings about the quarter-hour, round the clock, chiming of Gubbio's bells, but we found that to be an attractive part of the atmosphere. Friendly people all over town eager to discuss Gubbio's annual race up the mountain with massive "candles" and to explain how it is determined which color any particular resident wears. (Incidentally, the race is fixed -- the people carrying the candle topped by city's patron saint always win) Relais Ducale provided a reasonably priced, comfortable abode right in the middle of everything. You will see the lower terrace when you check in, but make sure to discover the other one several floors up, with its view of the whole town and well on to the low mountains in the west. Relais Ducale is where we will want to stay the next chance we get to visit Gubbio. Our only difficulty during the entire experience came before we arrived -- the directions regarding how to find the hotel entrance (which turned out to be through a bar/coffee shop right on the city's main square) were inscrutable. One cannot park in the old town, so we were needlessly dragging our luggage up and down streets that run at about a 30 degree angle. That was especially annoying because it is a problem that should be so easy to correct.

The location is ideal,in mid-city with panoramic views, and the service impeccable. Also, although parking is a problem, the hotel has a shuttle to public parking which can be requested as needed. The breakfast buffet is wonderful and varied, and the pastries especially delicious.

I stayed in a single room and this was by far the best single I have stayed in during a 2-week trip of single room bookings in Italy & Germany (7 bookings total). The view was spectacular; the breakfast was delicious and more than adequate; the hotel property was elegant, quiet and staff knowledgeable. The hotel is an old castle and has that medieval charm, much like the rest of Gubbio. The cost of the room was an excellent value (maybe due to time of year). It's a bit of a hike on foot but hotel will arrange to meet you @ bottom of the hill & drive you up. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this to other travelers (single & otherwise).

The surroundings of the hotel are remarkable. Hotel personnel were very welcoming, but failed to return passport upon our departure. We did not realize this error, and we bear some responsibility for it. But the hotel did not offer effective assistance in solving the problem.

The Hotel is very difficult to locate, and the front entrance involves going through the hotel bar and walking up two flights of stairs beforte an elevator is available. The offset to this problem is that the views were wonderful, the interior gardens very nice, and the hotel was very quiet. Day trips from Gubbio to Cortona and Assisi are about an hour's drive from Gubbio and are nice to include in the trip if one has the time.

Wonderful location which is right on the main square and actually attached to the Ducal Palace. The room we had was very pleasant, if a little warm as the air conditioning either wasn't working or was inefficient. Fortunately it was reasonably cool while we were there. Gubbio is well worth a few days and this hotel is a real experience, full of history. We were disappointed that after the photos showing breakfast on one of the elegant terraces, that breakfast is actually served in a rather uninspiring bar. The terraces exist, but it seems that the advertising makes use of them rather more freely than the guests are encouraged to! The staff were very helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough to help me sort a problem out (which had nothing to so with the hotel) - full marks there. There are plenty of restaurants, but I would recommend the Taverna del Lupo (expensive - part of the same hotel group), which has a wonderful wine list (one bottle at €3000), but the head waiter was really helpful finding us an excellent bottle at €25. Cheaper and with a wonderful garden and really friendly waiters and great choice of good food is Alla Balestra (100m down the steps opposite the hotel on the Via Republica). One must-do is go up the funicular lift to the Abbey on the mountain behind - then walk down the gentle zig-zag path back with superb views all the way.

Absolutely delightful and unique. The photos on Venere.com got me interested but, really didn't do this place justice. Comprised of part of the Duke's guesthouse, every room is different. Try to stay up in the tower as we had a great view of the town and valley and a beautiful garden adjacent to our room. Gubbio is a bit off the hilltown tourist trail but, that makes this place even more special. We only stayed two nights and really didn't require much service so I'm afraid I can't comment on that meaningfully. Very romantic.

The hotel was in a wonderful location, downtown next to the main plaza, and imbedded into the old city and Ducal properties. If you are looking for a trip back in time, walk along the streets behind the hotel and Ducal palace. Parking is available and free, but not in a super secure location. Call the hotel before you enter the old town for directions. The dive to the hotel is very easy if you know how. The staff and owners were very hospitable. We were there during the low -winter- season and paid only 110 euros a night. We were traveling with a small child and to our relief the heat was fine and was not turned off in the middle of the night like most other hotels.

This 4 star property does not have double-paned soundproofing windows. The hotel is within a few yards of a church - the only church in Italy (that I have found) where the bells ring ALL NIGHT LONG EVERY 15 MINUTES - exactly. One miserable, completely sleepless night with closed windows, a moldy shower, and NO air conditioning - I checked out early and didn't stay the second night! If you can sleep like the dead, you'll love this place.

The Relais Ducale is an annex building to a former Palazzo. It has a special atmosphere to it. It is situated right next to the Palazzo dei Consoli with a perfect vista over Gubbio. Our room was quiet and very nice. We also could use the terrasse garden and have breakfast outside in the piazza in front of the hotel which was really a special experience. Since we did not ask for directions beforehand, finding the hotel was quite a task but once we had phoned them, the friendly staff went out of their way to help us. Please be sure to ask for detailed directions prior to your arrival, especially when arriving with your car.

The hotel is very pleasant. Our room was spacious and nicely appointed and had a nice view over the town. There are, however, a couple of things that potential guests should be aware of. One is that the hotel uses a public parking lot close to 1 km away from the hotel, just outside the old city walls. We didn't particularly mind the walk but others might. It is possible to drive to the front door of the hotel, and the staff will park your car for you, but there are of course delays involved. The more maddening thing is the bell tower at the Palazzo dei Consoli across the street. No one in Gubbio should need a watch, because the bells sound every quarter hour 24/7. This means, for instance, that 3:45 a.m. is marked by 3 very loud bongs, followed by 3 slightly quieter bongs marking each quarter hour. Earplugs helped, but I still did not sleep well due to the every 15 minute interruptions all night long. This situation was exacerbated the first 3 nights of our stay when it was not deemed warm enough or late enough in the year for the hotel to allow use of the AC; thus, we had a window open. Closing all the windows and running the AC on our final night did reduce the bell noise significantly.

Excellent town, for 2-3 nights, hotel with very good location and very good service, we got parking included which meant that you drove up to the hotel, handed in your keys and they parked it for you/collected it, ask for a room with a view, like room 316

Rooms weren't as clean as we'd hoped. There was some grime around the tub and the toilet had a bad smell. Our original room was tiny but we upgraded for about 30 euro per night to a junior suite. There was quite a bit of street noise and the bells are loud but any hotel would be the same in that respect. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The hotel was pretty, but rooms are not as bright and clean as they appear in the photos.

Great location, very good service, clean professional hotel. When we had trouble finding it in the maze of little one way streets they even came out to show us the way there on a little scooter. The La Taverna del Lupo restaurant service could be more friendly but was fairly efficient & food was good. A much better restaurant (in fact the best we used in Umbria) is the Fornace de Mastro Giorgio. The web site is an accurate view of the place. Gubbio is built on a hillside you need good legs!

Hotel molto bello.
