Good hotel, with an excellent and priceworthy restaurant, but it has a major drawback: right across the street is a very large (block-long) and higher new hotel that blocks most of the gorgeous view of the Eiger mountain, the hallmark of Grindelwald. Also, though service was very good after we were there, at first it was not very welcoming. The restaurant staff was excellent (and the restaurant very good, and good value), and the check-out staff did valiant duty on the morning we left when the power for the whole town was knocked out by a huge windstorm. I would return to this property in a minute if its view were not so damaged by the large new hotel across the street.

PROS: Friendly, multilingual staff. Location is only 30 meters from the First gondola, and it's a 5-10-minute walk from the train station. Bathroom was clean and spacious by European standards. Their breakfast of muesli, bread, meat, cheese, milk, juice and coffee gives you the energy you need for a day on the trails or the slopes. They provided a crib and high-chair for our 13-month toddler, and didn't seem to mind his toddling around. CONS: Convenience to lifts, shops and the train station comes at a price. Since Steinbock is on the main road, there's road noise, noise from passerby and restaurant visitors. Also their thin curtains are unable to block the streetlights. Light sleepers beware. UPSHOT: we would stay there again... it is a good base for exploring the area, and the friendly staff makes up for any shortcomings re: location.
