We can't say enough about this hotel. It has the perfect location to everything. It's in walking distance to the train station and to all the landmarks. The staff was more than helpful and very nice. Everyone spoke English. The breakfast was delicious. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a nice hotel with a great value. We would return here anytime.

Good relationship between price/quality. It's close to the station, so this can be both a pro and a con: centrally located though quite noisy. But staff is friendly and rooms are clean. Ideal for short stayings.

Hotel Soana met my expectations very good. The location was great: in the main shopping street, only 500 metres from railway station and close to main attractions. The staff was very helpfull and polite. My room was very quiet in spite of the location of the hotel. Highly recommended.

The Soana is worth a visit if for no other reason that the classic lift in the building! seriously it was comfortable, and well located; we were able to walk to it from the station (Genoa Brignole), and also walk from the Soana to the old town and port. It is nice and centrally located, but our room was still quiet. Also it is clearly signposted on the street.

The rooms are okay - it's recently been renovated, but the rooms are quite modern compared to the buildings exterior. Comfortable and clean, but it's on the main street of Genoa and was quite noisy. However, hotel staff was nice enough to switch us to a different room our second night that was over a pedestrian (and much quiter street.) The location is in the center of town, on the main street near a big shopping street, Via Vicenza and ten minutes walk from the historic center. Of course, there are plenty of buses on the main street and the hotel is just under ten minutes walk from Brignole station. There is plenty of shopping, cafes, and restaurants nearby, but be warned that not much is open on Sunday. The old standby, McDonalds, is close, though, if things get desperate.

We loved Hotel Soana for its: central location (walking distance to Brignole train station, the "Old Town" and on public bus routes; and next to fresh food market); uniqueness; value for money; friendly staff; and cleanliness. Being seniors we asked for, and got, a quiet room overlooking an internal courtyard. You know you are in Italy when you stay at this delightful small hotel on the fourth floor of an old building.

Location is just super. 1 a.m. curfiew was a bit annoying, though it made sleeping easier without doors slamming etc. Staff was just great, very helpful and polite. My rating would have been 10 if they'd included breakfeat in the price, we didn't want to pay extra and try it out. Definitely worth staying, I know we'll go back next time in Genoa.

I recommend this hotel. It is within walking distance with wheeled luggage from the Brignole train station and easy to find since it is on the main colonnaded shopping street right by the bridge so it is easy to remember to find. It is close to the old town, port, and funicular. The staff all speaks English and were friendly and helpful. They made arrangements for an early morning taxi. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings and nice bathrooms. The price is completive although I think all the rooms are doubles so a single room might be relatively expensive. I traveled with my wife and two adult children so the price was good. The exterior of the hotel is fantastic. The hotel has a lift. It is on the top of the building and my room opened up to an alley but across the way an unused deck so I could keep the window open. We stayed only one night and had to leave early so we did not take the breakfast at 6 euro so I cannot comment on that. There is a bar right outside the hotel the opens at 7:00 though. I will definitely stay here again if I travel with my wife since I go to Genoa regularly.

The location of the hotel is near the city centre and is convenient to walk to nearby places. Our room was very clean and the bathroom is of good size. The bedroom has a ceiling fan while the unit had no air-conditioning. Therefore we had to open the window and let in some mosquitoes as we were there in late July when the weather was quite hot. In other seasons , things should be better. The hotel staffs were very helpful and speak good English.

Hotel cleanliness was second to none. Location excellent but couldn't have window open due to the excessive noise. Apart from that the hotel was excellent. Genoa isn't a friendly city, we found the Italians to be rather rude. Had to search every night for something to eat. The city seems to go to sleep after 7 o'clock in the evening and wakes up around 6 o'clock

Located on Genova's main shopping street, so very convenient, but lots of traffic noise. Our room had double-glazed windows which made the noise more manageable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was adequate, in fact more things were available than were listed on the info sheet in the room. Good value for money by comparison with other hotels (though Italy is expensive for us).

Lovely friendly hotel, the staff were really helpful and the location was spot on for us. Unfortunately the air conditioning wasn't working and it was very stuffy. Couldn't sleep without opening the windows, but the traffic noise kept us awake when we did, so we didn't get much sleep at all. Rooms have amazing painted ceilings!

A brilliant place to stay in central Genova, half way down one of the busiest shopping areas in the town. The hotel is initially not very obvious, being on the 4th floor of a converted "town house". The tiny wooden elevator which rattles and creaks up to the hotel doesn't prepare you for the exceptionally clean and modern hotel you arrive at. The room was not enormous but clean and very comfortable, with fresh towels and sheets daily. Wi-fi access was available and cheap enough (€4 for 5 hours). The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I can safely say that I will stay here again. The only possible drawback to some people might be that the hotel closes at 1am and it is not possible to get in after that. A word of warning about Genova airport. The buses from the airport to the G. Principia train station are only once an hour (at time of writing, April 2008) and you then need to get a bus from there to the G. Brignole station, or catch a train. It took us 2 hours to get to the hotel from the airport. Next time, we'll be getting a taxi. Genova is generally a fascinating town, with many remnants of its mediaeval past still visible. Make sure you explore the old historic section. It is also worth taking the enormous transverse funicular to the top of the city - there is a very old-fashioned restaurant at the top - and walking down to the Castello Museum from there, then taking the glass elevator back to the city centre. If this sort of thing interests you, the Staglieno cemetery is unbelievable, more of a sculpture garden than anything else.

Soana was very central, easy to get to, easy to get to sights etc. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was lovely, large. If there was street noise, it was blocked by the shutters. Being off-season there were not many people around. Genova was my favourite place in Italy.

We loved it here. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great location, close to the train station and historical area. The hotel was in an old historic building which we liked very much. We would definitely stay here again.

In totale soggiorno ci piaciuto e ritornerei in Soana ancora.

This is the 4th time we've stayed at this really nice hotel, situated on the 4th floor of a Liberty Style building. The tiny gated (original) lift takes 2 people plus 2 large bags. Staff are welcoming and efficient. Rooms are a good size and clean. Good double glazing keeps most of the busy road noise out- we have no difficulty sleeping. Good central location, 5 mins from Brignole station. The airport Volabus used to stop outside but now terminates at Principe station- however you can change to the No.20 (which still stops across the road from the hotel)there using your Volabus ticket which covers city transport for 24 hours.

I enjoyed the stay at this hotel and would definitely return. The location is central and transport links are very good, however as a consequence the traffic along XX September is noisy and might upset light sleeper's should they have a room on that side; that is the only negative. This was our first experience of a hotel being on a floor inside an apartment building. Once you got over the fact that the elevator looked like something out of the Twilight Zone and you were greeted by a nice reception gentleman, it wasn't so bad. The Soana was a short distance from the Brignole train station, easily walked with pull-along luggage. Also, it is in a very nice area of town. Although the rooms are a bit modest, they were very clean. The bathroom was a bit small, but very functional and clean. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. Hotel was as expected. Construction scaffolding at entrance makes entrance distracting. Relatively easy walk with wheeled luggage from Genova Brig train station. Map was given of city upon checkin and upon request authentic local restaurants recommended Trattoria Bedin and Trattoria Vegia Zena, both excellent. Hotel continetal breakfast the same each day and adequate but for price suggest finding a cafe instead. We utilized due to convenience. Good location to explore historic downtown and walk to harbor. 20E cab to Genova Prin train station . We rented room for three that had matrimonial bed with single and small balcony.

This hotel was really a good choice! We spent there four night visiting Genova and the surroundings. The location is really nice, within walking distance to the Station Brignole, on the corner of a main road (a lot of local bus stops nearby) and a pedestrians only street. The rooms were ok and the staff was really helpful and mainly good in English. Becouse of the traffic on the main road the nights weren't very quiet, but fortunatelly we got used to it. Else you can close the windows and use the air-condition (incl. in the price). After all very excellent price/quality ratio.

Soana Hotel was a great surprise, we were not expecting such a nice hotel for the price we payed. Breakfast was expensive for what you paid for (6 euros buy a much better breakfast in any nearby café) You still have to keep in mind we are the kind of travellers that spend very little time in the hotel, so the only important thing for us is the beds, the quietness and the bathrooms. We don't usually even notice if there is a TV

This is definitely the top choice in Genova if you compare the price, location, quietness and space of the room. 10 minutes' easy walk will take you to Stazione Brignole and 3 minute's walk to the McDonalds. Breakfast of 6 euro is worthwhile comparing with McDonalds nearby. You do not have to call taxi if you arrive Stazione Brignole and carry a wheeled luggage.

Lovely big room and the hotel location is very central. Handy to do anything in Genoa and surrounding area. Did not take up the option of paying more(6euro each..12) for a breakfast partly because it did not suit our itinerary but also for a basic breakfast it made the accommodation appear not the best value for money compared to our excellent hotel we had just left in Milan. This hotel was good value in a very convenient location. When getting there from Genoa Airport, take the Volabus 100 service to the penultimate stop, just before Brignole Station. Breakfast was not included in the price (6 euros). Staff were generally friendly. Be sure to request one of the 7 newly renovated rooms. All in all, price/quality relationship was very good. Recommended for a short stay in Genoa.

Arrived in the middle of a snowstorm but the staff were very helpful and welcoming. Hotel was very comfortable and excellent value for money, and is in a great location. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and would return if I visited Genoa again.

Very central for historic part of Genoa so ideal for a base. Pleasant and reasonably priced hotel.

L'Hotel Soana è davvero un'ottima scelta, in pieno centro e con un rapporto prezzo-qualità eccezionale. Camere, servizi, accoglenza: tutto ottimo.

We wanted a hotel right in amongst the hustle and bustle of city life and that's what we got. If you take a room at the front, be prepared for city sounds almost round the clock, although the hotel is on the 4th floor of the building, so well above street level. It was great to be in amongst it all. Great position for walking to all parts, including the old town and the water-front. Close to Brignole railway station for trips down the coast. Lovely old building and entrance, but we were a little disappointed by the lack of character in the rooms - apart from the ornate painted ceiling retained in one of the (2) rooms we were allocated, there was little evidence of the character of the building, with UPVC double-glazing and modern motel style furnishings. It must always be a dilemma, striking the balance between comfort and character and it was very comfortable, but our preference would have been slightly more towards character. Out in the stairwell there is a lovely old lift, that takes two only people, up the middle of the staircase - an ornate mahogany box going up and down on a cable - but we were told that this too is to be replaced shortly (something over which the hotel presumably has little control as it services the whole building). Genoa is having a facelift, having been European City of Culture 2004. However, we hope they don’t overdo this – as with the hotel and the lift, a little genteel decay is what gives it the character that people come to see. Having said all this, we all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for clean, comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price.

Very conveniently situated, close to the centre but not loud, opposite a classy department store, just by the excellent bus service and round the corner from numerous small shops and restaurants. Managed without a car as parking seemed a bit problematic though the receptionist was handing out yellow signs to put in the car window which presumably exonerated you from parking charges... Hired a car on the third day to drive up into the Apennines, beautiful! A restaurant recommended by the receptionist proved to be just what we were looking for and within walking distance. All in all an excellent experience! Gill Marsden
