The maintenance is not so accurate and the hotel usually close at 1 a.m. (2 a.m. on saturday). However the position is outstanding: a few steps from the Brignole railway station and from the central XX Settembre street.

I've stayed here before and was much more impressed the first time. I was in room 4 this time, it was small, the electric went out a few times, there was one pillow per person on the bed and the bathroom was tiny - the shower so small you hit the temperature guage every time you moved. My last room was huge, with a new shower and a changing room. It was also much cheaper last year when I stayed in my large room then this year when I stayed in my tiny room. The location was still excellent.

Excellent situation of the hotel, at walking distance from the station where we arrived and close to the main sites. Although we only stayed two nights in Genoa we could easily visit the main places such as the old town, palazzi, museums, gardens, sea side, etc... The different persons running the place are all very kind, competent and helpful.

We appreciated the host accommodating us with a very early check-in on arriving at the hotel from the Cinque Terre. The hotel is very centrally located not only for access to the station and airport bus transport but also to places of interest in Genoa and its surrounds, e.g. Portofino. The host provided very helpful information when we sought advice on destinations we wished to visit while in Genoa. We would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to other travellers.

The location of this hotel is amazing. Very close to a beautiful main street for shopping and food. It is a short walk to a metro station which will get you to one of the main train stations. I would recommend Brignole as a departure point in Genova. The staff were very helpful and the building was quaint especially the lift. :)

The hotel Soana is quite easy to find despite Genoa's bizarre numbering. Nice central location and very helpful staff. There is no breakfast but that's no problem as there a couple of cafes around the back. The lift is really sweet (wood panel and manual doors).

This hotel was quiet and well located. The room I had (2) included a new bathroom and large sitting room. There was plenty of space and large windows (though view was an alley). There were ceiling fans and air conditioning if needed. The staff was friendly. The price was excellent for this great location.

If traveling by train, be sure to get off at the Bagnole Station, not the principal station. Novice navigating in Genova is daunting. I drowned my iPhone in Cinque Terre and had to rely on archaic technology, a map!

We found the negative comments regarding this hotel to be a little harsh. This is a two star hotel! Yes, the elevator is small (my wife and I fit in with 2 small backpacks and 2 medium sized checked trolleys), the shower cabin is small (66x66 cm, but this is the case in many hotels in old buildings, and didn't have any problems with the hot water) , the mattresses hard (we slept really well on them). The location is very good; 10 min walk to Piazza De Ferrari (buses, metro, shopping) or Brignole Train Station (for Milan, Cinque Terre - when you exit the hotel, turn right and take the pedestrian only street - many options for breakfast, even a Carrefour Express, etc). The room has a minibar. The noise from the buses is really hard if the windows are open (our windows were facing the main street) but the AC kept us comfortable-end of September). Keep in mind that you cannot enter the hotel between 1 and 7 AM. The TV has CNN International and BBC News as English channels (some better rated hotels provided just Italian channels), and the internet was free (we didn't have this very often in Italy) and worked from our room. We didn't have breakfast, so we cannot comment on it. The people at the front desk really helpful. It was a good experience, and the hotel is good value for the money.

We were given a warm welcome, and a map with local restaurants. We discovered the Oriental Market a short walk from the hotel for fresh fruits, baked goods, & cheeses. For the best calzones & pizza, walk over to Pizzaria da PAF, just past the old city gate!

I love this hotel! This is the second time I've stayed here and the place is really well-located in a busy, clean and safe part of town. The staff are friendly and very helpful. It should be said that this is not a quiet hotel as it is on a very busy street and Genova is not a quiet city but being on the 4th floor is not problem unless you are a very light sleeper. Not a hotel for "party animals" as it closes the doors at 1am and this seems to make it popular with older business people and Italian couples. The hotel is a very short walk from Genova Brignole station (the bus from the airport stops and starts there) and from Piazza Ferrari, which borders the famous mediaeval section of the city. I would certainly stay here as a matter of course on future visits to the city.

It is certainly a good bargain. Although the hotel is rated as a 2-star hotel, it has all it takes for you to have a pleasant stay. The location is great, you can take virtually all the busses almost right in front of the hotel; better still, you can reach Palazzo Ducale, Teatro Carlo Felice, etc. on foot and the historical part of the town is just a few hundreds of meters from there. We certainly recommend this hotel to everyone who is not after splendor.

This is an excellent hotel. Nearly all of the staff (one exception) were very knowledgeable and helpful. There was lots of space in the room, and the hotel was quiet. Breakfast was minimal (though good coffee), but the price (3 Euros) was low. Note that the hotel is close to a marvellous covered market with fine selection of fresh fruit - the Merkato Orientale. The hotel is well positioned for local restaurants and the centre of town within easy walking distance.

There is nothing really negative to say about the hotel, only that it is very basic. I don't think it's worth the price per night. The staff was very, very friendly. Watch out when looking for the hotel because the house numbers on the Via XX Septembre are double (meaning 1 system for stores, 1 for houses & hotels). The neighborhood is good for shopping, but nothing to do at night. You have to walk to the center. It was extremely loud on the street, but i guess this is common in a big city.

We spent six days in Genova, loved the city and were very happy with this hotel. If you’re arriving by train, get off at Brignole station not Principe. From Brignole it’s only a ten minute walk. Our room was very airy, high ceilings and tall windows giving onto a courtyard. Furnishings were spartan but comfortable. First night we made the mistake of hanging unsecured laundry on the clothesline outside our window in the still evening air. Overnight a wind got up and our clothes ended up on the ground below. Hotel staff not only retrieved them but washed and dried them too. Which was typical. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lady on afternoon duty. She recommended a variety of restaurants with emphasis on Genovese specialities. Good recommendations apart from the nearby Ostaja trattoria, which was a bit of a disaster and unfortunately we didn’t see her to give her feedback after eating there. During our stay the hotel was not offering a full breakfast, only rather poor coffee and a croissant, which was probably not a good idea. Just a couple of blocks away you can get excellent coffee and pastries on Via Galata just north of Piazza Colombo. There’s an Oriental Market nearby which doesn’t mean Chinese food, restaurants and clothing, but fresh Italian produce sold from stalls under an overall canopy roof. Also close at hand is the best ice-cream we've had in Italy or anywhere in the world for that matter, at Grom on Via Palmaria. Genova is a real town, plenty of tourists around the harbour but you lose most of them a few blocks inland. Perhaps the hilly streets weed out the faint of heart. Take the funicular to Righi for spectacular views and pleasant park walking, or the short train rides to Nervi and Portofino. We definitely want to revisit and if staying in the city Hotel Soana would be our choice.

The hotel is on the fourth floor. So, you need to tell the taxi driver the NUMBER (23) because XX Settembre is main street. If you are traveling light in terms of baggage weight, you could take the subway to the end of the line and walk the 3-4 blocks. But the taxi fare from the main train station was just 15 €. Two good restaurants within reasoonable walking distance: I Due Torri and Osteria di San Mattee.

We had a double room with ensuite bathroom. The service was excellent and most helpful. Our only problem was finding the place as it is confusing when street shop numbers are in red and other building numbers are in black so there is an uneven sequence. We did not know this and the first 3 locals we asked didn't give us correct advice. Once we knew, it was easy. Strange Genoa!!

Though we struggled a bit at this hotel because not all of the reception staff know a lot of English (though one does!), it was in a great location in relation to the rest of Genoa and we actually used it as a jumping off point to get to the train station early the next morning for a trip to Cinque Terre. Their wireless was not working while we were there, but the rooms were definitely nice, clean, and air-conditioned, and for the price, that's all we could ask for.

The rooms are okay - it's recently been renovated, but the rooms are quite modern compared to the buildings exterior. Comfortable and clean, but it's on the main street of Genoa and was quite noisy. However, hotel staff was nice enough to switch us to a different room our second night that was over a pedestrian (and much quiter street.) The location is in the center of town, on the main street near a big shopping street, Via Vicenza and ten minutes walk from the historic center. Of course, there are plenty of buses on the main street and the hotel is just under ten minutes walk from Brignole station. There is plenty of shopping, cafes, and restaurants nearby, but be warned that not much is open on Sunday. The old standby, McDonalds, is close, though, if things get desperate.

I recommend this hotel. It is within walking distance with wheeled luggage from the Brignole train station and easy to find since it is on the main colonnaded shopping street right by the bridge so it is easy to remember to find. It is close to the old town, port, and funicular. The staff all speaks English and were friendly and helpful. They made arrangements for an early morning taxi. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings and nice bathrooms. The price is completive although I think all the rooms are doubles so a single room might be relatively expensive. I traveled with my wife and two adult children so the price was good. The exterior of the hotel is fantastic. The hotel has a lift. It is on the top of the building and my room opened up to an alley but across the way an unused deck so I could keep the window open. We stayed only one night and had to leave early so we did not take the breakfast at 6 euro so I cannot comment on that. There is a bar right outside the hotel the opens at 7:00 though. I will definitely stay here again if I travel with my wife since I go to Genoa regularly.

A brilliant place to stay in central Genova, half way down one of the busiest shopping areas in the town. The hotel is initially not very obvious, being on the 4th floor of a converted "town house". The tiny wooden elevator which rattles and creaks up to the hotel doesn't prepare you for the exceptionally clean and modern hotel you arrive at. The room was not enormous but clean and very comfortable, with fresh towels and sheets daily. Wi-fi access was available and cheap enough (€4 for 5 hours). The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I can safely say that I will stay here again. The only possible drawback to some people might be that the hotel closes at 1am and it is not possible to get in after that. A word of warning about Genova airport. The buses from the airport to the G. Principia train station are only once an hour (at time of writing, April 2008) and you then need to get a bus from there to the G. Brignole station, or catch a train. It took us 2 hours to get to the hotel from the airport. Next time, we'll be getting a taxi. Genova is generally a fascinating town, with many remnants of its mediaeval past still visible. Make sure you explore the old historic section. It is also worth taking the enormous transverse funicular to the top of the city - there is a very old-fashioned restaurant at the top - and walking down to the Castello Museum from there, then taking the glass elevator back to the city centre. If this sort of thing interests you, the Staglieno cemetery is unbelievable, more of a sculpture garden than anything else.

Soana was very central, easy to get to, easy to get to sights etc. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was lovely, large. If there was street noise, it was blocked by the shutters. Being off-season there were not many people around. Genova was my favourite place in Italy.

Great Hotel, great location, convenient both to the Brignoli station and the historic downtown, right next to the Oriental Market. Highly recommended.

Very satisfied with accommodations, as advertised, including breakfast. Management was particularly gracious in helping me solve a transportation problem that arose during a rail strike. I recommend this hotel.

We loved it here. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great location, close to the train station and historical area. The hotel was in an old historic building which we liked very much. I wish we had spent another day in Genoa. Breakfast was offered (for an additonal price) but since we were in a hurry the next day to catch our ship we did not eat here. We would definitely stay here again.

In totale soggiorno ci piaciuto e ritornerei in Soana ancora.

Felt very institutional, rooms were clean but persistently smelt of smoke and unpleasant to be in, towels like sandpaper. Some staff were friendly and helpful, others made you feel like an unwelcome inconvenience.

This is the 4th time we've stayed at this really nice hotel, situated on the 4th floor of a Liberty Style building. The tiny gated (original) lift takes 2 people plus 2 large bags. Staff are welcoming and efficient. Rooms are a good size and clean. Good double glazing keeps most of the busy road noise out- we have no difficulty sleeping. Good central location, 5 mins from Brignole station. The airport Volabus used to stop outside but now terminates at Principe station- however you can change to the No.20 (which still stops across the road from the hotel)there using your Volabus ticket which covers city transport for 24 hours.

Everything was perfect, except the elevator, wich was very small and old. Besides, there was some noise from the buses early in the morning. The staff indicated us a parking place, wich cost 12 euros per day. The staff was very kind, serving us the breakfast half an hour earlier than the usual in the hotel. I recomend this hotel.

The Soana hotel is located right at the city center, within several minutes' walk from all the main attractions. The rooms are clean, the staff is friendly. All in all, it represents excellent value for money. And if you travel by train like I did, the Brignole train station is also within several minutes walk.

It was my second time. There's a lot of nopises if you have a room on the street, but you could ask for an internal room and the window is excellent, so if you close it you don't hear anything... It's a good hotel for relationship price/quality. The hotel is very very tidy!

I enjoyed the stay at this hotel and would definitely return. The location is central and transport links are very good, however as a consequence the traffic along XX September is noisy and might upset light sleeper's should they have a room on that side; that is the only negative. Staff were very friendly; shops, restaurants, central market, galleries in close or walkable proximity. Recommended.

This was an real find - we stayed in the refurbished rooms (the corridor to the right of reception) and the Soana was by far the best hotel we have stayed in over four visits to Genoa in the past few years. Value for money it is truly outstanding. Spotlessly clean, welcoming staff and areasonable breakfast (at an additional cost).

This was our first experience of a hotel being on a floor inside an apartment building. Once you got over the fact that the elevator looked like something out of the Twilight Zone and you were greeted by a nice reception gentleman, it wasn't so bad. I liked that it had working air conditioning! Although it smelt a bit antiseptic/bleachy, it was better than smelling like wee! Nice place if you're just doing a stop over! Liked the vaulted ceiling!

A recommander.
