Hotel Monte Carlo Madeira - Funchal

Wonderful terrasse. nice and quiet surroundings. bit old fashioned but very lovely charming atmosphere.

Hotel datant des annees 1930 avec du charme mais donnant l'impression d'avoir peu evolue depuis. Receptionniste tres mou et pas souriant. Chambre spacieuse et donnant su. La piscine avec petit balcon mais tres bruyante la nuit (aboiements). Literie du siecle dernier. Petit dej basique. Attention : pas de wifi contrairement a la description et internet par cable a prix prohibitif ! Nous avons trouve des meilleurs rapports qualite prix a funchal a ce prix (50 euros la nuit la double).

A great experience, very welcoming, this imposing hotel is a charming throwback to the past. The cobbled hill leading to it is a killer (take a taxi to avoid carrying/pulling your luggage up it) but you are well rewarded by a fabulous view of the city, and a terrace that you can eat your breakfast on or enjoy a drink from the bar. Excellent value for money.

You get what you pay for with the Monte Carlo. The location is great, high on the hill above Funchal, with great views, and about ten minutes walk from the seafront. For easy access to the town centre, we much preferred this location to the lido area to the west of Funchal. Bear in mind the 3 star rating and expect rather faded grandeur and you'll not be disappointed.The hotel is clean and service is friendly and casual - you can take drinks from the bar to your room, to the pool area or out on the terraces. Our room was in an annexe at the back of the hotel, by the pool. It was plenty big enough, with a sofa and TV and a dressing table. The beds were twins, but very comfortable with plenty of blankets for the cool nights. The bathroom was small and had no window, but was clean and had been freshly painted. Breakfast was rather disappointing, with diluted orange squash and tasteless ham and cheese every day, and fruit salad was only available when we came down late, but that's my only real criticism.

On arrival the hotel did not have the booking details. The room was clean though very basic. As we had poor weather our clothes were wet but we had to ask twice for a heater - communication was poor! Breakfast was dissappointing also - very basic and the hot food mostly cold. The staff as a whole were friendly and the reports read before we went were quite accurate. Walk to the town not to far. Would only stay again if little choice. The hotel looks lovely from the outside but could be vastly improved inside, still keeping its character. There were numerous places to eat, mostly reasonably priced. As a summery the stay was pleasant, though could have been improved by some decoration, and warmer hot food. Ok to stay if money tight. View from hotel entrance impressive. Overall 4/10.

Amazing value and location - 10 minutes from the centre of Funchal albiet a steep climb. The staff and manager (Raul)are fantastic and many rooms enjoy a panoramic view of Funchal - excellent to view the new years fireworks. It is good value but remember it is a 3 star - not 5 star. Great charm if slightly faded with character and cleanliness. Breakfasts are more than adequate excellent on the terrace in the moring sun. Would we go again? Yes - definately. Negative comments may come from those expecting 5 star luxury or in a room without a view.

Very old structure, very difficult to find in Funchal. Poor maintenance of the rooms (windows and bathroom, very small parking... Nice view from the terrace and very obliging employees. So if you plan to stay in this hotel, reserve only a room with sea view...

Good hotel, not far from the centre of Funchal,old and historical building. very good welcoming. At the payment 2% of the total of the invoice was added because I paid with credit card, it wasn't written on the web site.
