Hotel do Carmo - Funchal

Fantastic location in Funchal - easy walking distance to all of the important sites. The staff was extremely helpful - making restaurant reservations, calling taxi cabs, arranging site-seeing tours. As one of the guidebooks mentions, the rooms are "well used" but clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the balcony with our room and also the pool on the top of the hotel to cool off after a day of walking the old town. We particularly appreciated Roberto - the afternoon/evening desk clerk who helped in many ways including restaurant suggestions to experience the local cuisine.

Roberto made the difference for this hotel. He was very nice and extremely helpful. The other front desk people were not as friendly or helpful but Roberto was the difference in making our trip very memorable and fun!

Not possible to connect my own computer to internet inside hotel.

We were staying 7 days at Hotel do Carmo this time. It was our second visit at the hotel, which should mean that we already had a godd impression of it. This impression was confirmed, and we really believe this was not our last stay at Hotel do Carmo.

We need to add a comment: We expected a room with a balcony before we arrived. Therefore we were very disappointed when this wasn't the case. In addition, the nine nights suddenly were reduced to two on the room card. We asked the receptionist about this. He then showed us a mail which I had sent two days earlier, to give them a message about late arrival. This mail they have misinterpreted, and they really believed we had asked them to change our reservation from nine to two nights. Still I hardly understand how such an interpretation could be possible. However, when this misunderstanding was corrected, the service was excellent from all the staff. We also got our room changed and were staying in a balcony room for the rest of our stay.
