Dreadful hotel - the room was hideously ugly, beds uncomfortable - heating not working and so room was freezing and noisy (from both doors banging inside the hotel as well as traffic noise). Smell of smoke and onions on one night and no sign of smoke detectors in our 3rd floor room. Lift was broken on arrival (after my husband was trapped in it for a while) and so our son had to lug all of our bags up to the 3rd floor. Horrible part of Florence - the one redeeming feature is the proximity to the railway station - although it is in a quite unappealing area. We had spent the previous 2 nights at a wonderful hotel in the historic area and were really disappointed by Stella Mary - we would never stay there again and would not recommend the hotel at all. Breakfast was shocking - stale croissants and bread - we skipped it altogether the second morning. Really disappointing.

The hotel is too basic but too expensive for what they offer: no safe box, no kettle, no fridge. Location is good if you need to be close to the train station so as not to take a taxi or be able to visit the surroundings by train. The area is not nice at all.

The staff were very welcoming, professional and helpful and nothing was ever too much trouble. The bed had crisp, clean sheets, and the bedroom and bathroom were very clean. The only down side was that there was an air-conditioning unit positioned next to our balcony, which was only noisy with the doors open. No problem to sleep at night. The train/bus station was just around the corner from the hotel and it was in a good location. It was also walking distance from the beautiful squares and river. I went to Italy for my 40th birthday and was not at all disappointed with my stay and would definitely stay there again.

Excellent price, basic rooms, and a little bit of a hassle to check in. While we booked a room at one hotel, we were told it was full and given the same price at another location a few blocks away. Overall it was a good stay and an excellent value.

How to reach Stella Mary Hotel
By carIf you are arriving from the South, exit the highway at Firenze Sud and follow the indications towards the centro storico, then towards the stazione Centrale railway station, very close to the hotel.
For those of you arriving from the North, exit at Firenze Nord, and follow directions to the stazione Centrale.
By train
The hotel is located only 200 metres from the Santa Maria Novella railway station, and can be easily reached on foot. Exit the station on the left (by the pharmacy), cross the road and head right (towards McDonalds). Turn left into largo Alinari, then take the first right into via Fiume, where the hotel is situated.
By airplane
The Amerigo Vespucci airport lies around 4 km from the city-centre of Florence. The airport has good connections to the center of the city, which can be reached in about fifteen minutes by taxi, and in about twenty minutes by the Sita/Ataf-Fly by Bus shuttle-service, which runs between the airport and the Santa Maria Novella railway station.
