About Hotel Royal

hotel front view Hotel Royal hotel front view The Royal hotel is housed in a magnificent, late-18th century villa located in a quiet area of Florence, only 500 metres away from the Santa Maria Novella railway station, the Palazzo dei Congressi Convention Hall, and the historic centre.

The villa, former residence of the owners until 1950, was turned into a hotel and, in 1990, completely restored under new management by the Messina family.

The property features ample on-site parking facilities and a beautiful garden, and offers guests the convenience of close proximity to all most important monuments, museums and commercial streets, together with the certainty of a relaxing stay away from the metropolitan traffic.

It is a value-for-money hotel. ıt takes only 10-15 minutes to walk from duomo and it is cheap enough for this location. Building is very nice, service is OK. The one and only problem is the size of the rooms.

A friend of mine recommended me to stop at the Hotel Royal and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. One of its advantage is its location: 10 min. from the train station, 15 min. from the historical center, very peaceful area. The Hotel Staff welcomed us in a perfect way! Except the woman to whom we paid the stay who wasn't very kind with the clients! Besides, we had to pay an extra for the hotel to keep our luggage in a room the last day while we were visiting Firenze before leaving at 12:30pm(7 euros for half a day). Otherwise everything was perfect. Good advice and good welcoming from the staff. The room was clean and beautiful but the walls were too thin so we could hear the persons next door having their showers. The breakfast was ok. The building is just awesome with a yard to park your car and a beautiful garden with a swimming pool we couldn't enjoy beacause of the weather (sunny but cold in October). Good weekend at the Hotel Royal.

What a brilliant place! We couldn't believe how easy it was to find by car. Parking was 20 euros a day but worth it. This is a really wonderful hotel. We had one of the rooms at the back with a balcony. The whole place has fin de siecle feel about it - opulent and aristocratic, but not expensive. The receptionist was great and recommended a wonderful local restaurant across the road. It is about a 10 minute walk from Duomo, so really fairly central. Good basic restaurants within a 5 minute walk. I would definitely go back. AND it has a beautiful garden at the back with a swimming pool - right in the centre of Florence.

I think that it has been incorrect to send us in another hotel (Donatello) without any notice. Moreover, after poor explanations about new accomodation, it was claimed the spot payment of parking. The rooms and the breakfast area were very little. It was a totally incorrect behaviour!!!

The Hotel Royal was a great little spot. Appeared to be an large old Italian villa remade into a hotel. Much more inviting feel to it than a standard hotel. Very much appreciated Francesco's local restaurant recommendation, especially on the evening of a national festa when many places were closed. Quite nice to have a large parking area right in front of the hotel...very convenient if you're driving.

We stayed over Eastern and actually liked the distance to the center. Very friendly was a guy behind the counter, who let me use the wireless system to check mails etc. It was very quite. The rooms are like on the pictures, but with very little space for clothes. Breakfast could have been better. Very little fruits, cheap croissants. After all I believe next time we'll try another.

I stayed at Hotel Royal last month with my husband for two nights. We basically felt very unwelcome, the staff was not very helpful and for the most part unfriendly (maybe if we spoke Italian it would have been different). If you are looking for amentities common to most hotels in europe now, this is not the place for you. The television in the room barely worked and didn't offer any non-Italian stations. There is no internet and the breakfast was terrible. On the otherhand if you rented a car they do offer on-site parking which is somewhat difficult to find in Florence and the neighboorhood is charming.

The common areas in the hotel were lovely(antiques etc.) however the room was very basic in my opinion. Breakfasts were very standard as well and the hotel was on a dirty street that was a good 25 minute walk to anywhere. The property should also consider paving or putting interlocking stones at the entrance and at the rear where they have gardens and a pool but it somehow looks unfinished because there's gravel everywhere.

People at reception are adorable. It´s a "homely" hotel. It seems to be one of those old, big mansions. Very nice for people who like old-fashioned hotels and things.

This is a beautiful hotel which provided excellent value for money. We loved the building which is very grand and full of character with its high ceilings, paintings and sense of history. We arrived late in the evening after our UK flight had been delayed to a friendy reception from Marco. Our room No 42 was delightful with its own balcony ovelooking the Hotel Royal's lovely garden which features lemon and olive trees and an abundance of fragrant plants. There's the bonus of an outdoor pool that guest's can enjoy at the end of a long day sightseeing or shopping for an extra 12 euros. We enjoyed our breakfast which consisted of a selection of cereals, yoghurt, superb fruit juices, and some delicious Italian cheese and ham with fresh crispy rolls as well as plenty of great Italian coffee. Perfect for a hot Italian summer day! This was a special break for myself and my husband as it was the first time we had been away on our own without the children for over a decade and the Royal Hotel helped to make it memorable. Great hotel with something special to offer those looking for a peaceful and quality place to stay. We hope to go back again soon

the garden and pool were lovely but we found it odd that use of the hotel pool cost 12 Euro, which is OK if you decide to have a long swim/sunbathe session but a bit costly for a quick dip when you get back tired from sightseeing AC was very noisy

it is a lovely hotel, spacious and clean, with lovely garden which is a haven in a crowded city after long walks. the location is 'off centre' but still close enough (10 minutes walk to the main piazzas)with grood restaurants nearby ('academia' in no 7 st marks square was a real find!) breakfast is adequate if boring, staff not unfriendly but don't expect them bursting into song or going out of their way to make you feel really welcome. I don't know any other hotel to compare the royal with,it being our first time in florence, but compared to other hotels we stayed in europe, this is not worth 130 euros a night. I would like more facilities for my money.

The hotel is conveniently located near the main train station and close to the main shopping areas. The hotel is not bad seen externally. It has a very attractive and large reception and bar area and very nice breakfast room. The breakfast was, also, excellent. We were just given a crappy room for 3 people and it was way over-priced for Milan at that time of year. The hotel was nearly empty and they just crammed a cot into a double room. The air-conditioning was terrible and, apparently because of a nearby highway or main avenue (couldn't really tell), it was noisy and so you couldn't really leave the window open. The furniture was attractive 2nd empire-like stuff and the bathroom (weirdly) was large and beautiful. I have a feeling there may have been much better rooms. The reception and service when we arrived in the evening bordered on the appalling. I think the guy thought he was doing us a favor. We didn't even bother asking for any real help. The next morning, it was like a literal day and night. The reception and service was awesome. Who knows, maybe the realized we weren't just some slumming boorish Ami's and tried to make up for giving us such a crappy room. On the whole, the place is a gamble. Maybe they'll give you a good room and service, maybe they won't. Too bad. With a little better price management and more welcoming approach, it could be good value.

This is a nice hotel. Living in the property is like staying at a royal house. It has a big front yard, paintings hanging on the walls of the hallway, clean rooms and quite surrounding. The Italian-style backyard garden is spacious and pleasent, great for talking a walk and breathing some fresh air after breakfast. Clean breakfast table with light blue cashmere covers. The only drawback is you have to walk blocks more to get to the city center. But it didn't bothered me that much. I enjoyed my stay.

A lovely, comfortable hotel with a rather old fashioned grandeur. Sitting in the rear garden provided a haven of tranquility, whilst the grounds in front of the hotel cut the rooms of from traffic and street noise. An impressive breakfast. Rather like staying in a rather grand country house, away from the noise of the city.

The hotel is very decent, nice garden, large parking (at an additional price though). Easy to find from the airport (some 20 mins drive). The surraounding is OK but it was hard to find a place to eat close by, as well as for any walk to the "attractions" you have to go via St Lorenzo which is not always agreable. Overall - nice, clean, 15 mins to the river, good and enjoyable stay.

This is an enchanting hotel. You are in the city and yet when you are in the hotel, it feels like you're in a villa outside the city. The period building and the gardens feel like you're in a Borghese surroundings. It was my retreat when I wanted to get away from the crowds. I wouldn't stay anywhere else while in Florence. Royal is a gorgeous haven in the middle of Florence. We enjoyed the room, the tub, and would have very much liked to swim, had it been warm enough. That said, the desk staff (THREE different people!!) were rude, and when I asked for a knife to cut food with, I was told that I could not have one because the management frowned upon eating in the rooms. The breakfast food is normal, but the coffee comes from a machine, which was a shame with a beautiful espresso machine in the very next room. We would go back, but would hope that the staff would be kinder.

It's a good hotel if you won't to spend a lot of money staing in florence. With private car park as quite nobody else in town, it's easy to reach from Fortezza da Basso following Fiesole. Maybe the first street light on tha right and then the first on the left.

An excellent building, potentially a great hotel, but unfortunately ruined by the monkeys who work in it. Having caught up in the rain on the way to the hotel, we arrived damp and cold, and yet we had to wait for about five minutes before we were acknowledged let alone served whilst the receptionist and a cleaner were in some deep discussion. Although he did not appear to be busy he could not even complete the registration there and then. We had to leave our passports behind. The room was spacious but does not appear to be spotlessly clean, as any guest would expect. Also, the walls were bare and unwelcoming. How much does it cost to put a few pictures up? We met some more chimps at breakfast time. Is it that difficult to force a smile or return a responds when the guest greet them? What a grumpy bunch! You would meet more evolved primates at McD’s. I had been to a great number of hotels, fair enough we only need the room for a few nights and usually do not have much contacts with the staff, but when we do we expect a friendly, courteous and professional service. This hotel comes out as one of the worst. Service is everything. Maybe I was unlucky. Would I recommend this place? Can’t you tell yet?

Actually the accomodations were fine. But the poor welcome we received set the tone for our entire stay. Upon arrival, the guy at the reception desk was smoking a cigar which smelled up the entire downstairs and all he was doing was playing computer games rather than responding to our presence. At a later point, we asked him to recommend a restaurant and he said he would not until 7:30 pm. We made our own plans from that minute forward. The location was good. The "American breakfast" was terrible and we ended up not partaking of it at any time.
