About Hotel Orto de' Medici

exterior - entrance Hotel Orto de' Medici exterior - entrance The Orto de' Medici Hotel in Florence is located inside an early 19th century palace along a tranquil street in downtown Florence, near the Academy Gallery (Galleria dell'Accademia) and only five minutes on foot from the Cathedral and Fortezza da Basso congress centre. Clients have access to valet parking. The hotel's privileged position makes it a great point of departure for cultural visits to the heart of the city of Florence, shopping and participation in fairs and congresses.

The 42 rooms in the Hotel, classic, deluxe or junior suite, are tastefully and elegantly furnished. From the windows of many of our rooms it is possible to admire the magnificent view of the Medieval roofs of Florence. The palace hall is accessed through a suggestive corridor painted with frescoes that leads into the Tuscan Serena Rock stairway that connects the four floors of the hotel.

Continuing along the corridor, you reach the charming inside patio, guard of a prestigious past: in the late 16th century, Lorenzo de Medici, Il Magnifico, set up in Florence a school of sculptors that was recognized as the premier Art Academy in Europe. Among its most prominent students, Michelangelo Buonarroti learned here the artistic techniques that allowed him to create his masterpieces a few years later, which still attract a great number of tourists to Florence. Today, a path paved with pietra serena and covered with an iron and glass structure allows our guests to easily access the new deluxe rooms, which will follow small paths embellished with geometrical hedges and saplings. At the centre of the garden there is a fountain surmounted by a small bronze angel (copy of Verrocchio).

The Hotel's first floor has two spacious reading rooms with frescoed ceilings and parquet floors. The beautiful dining room, decorated with floral landscapes, borders a large flowered terrace where guests can dine in the open and, during the summer, enjoy a drink and a relaxing evening at the La Terrazza dell'Orto bar.

Wi-Fi areas and Internet workstations are always available at Hotel Orto de' Medici.

Hotel Reviews Orto de' Medici

As a single female traveller I felt very comfortable at this hotel and they were very helpful. The hotel was modern and very clean. The bathroom was excellent. I had a wonderful breakfast and the garden courtyard was wonderful. It was a short walking distance from all the sights. Only problem was the windows do not have screens and I left it open and turned off the air conditioner. I got lots of mosquito bits.

My wife and I along with or two older children stayed in a quadruple during our stop in Florence in our "once in a lifetime" multi-city Italy family trip. The Orto de' Medici is located about 5 minutes by Taxi from the train station and is within walking distance of all of the museums and landmarks we intended to visit. The room was large and reminiscent of its significant historical past. Everything was clean and well maintained. The breakfast, included with the price of the room, was quite good and consisted of much more than a light continental breakfast. The staff was helpful with restaurant recommendations and quite professional overall. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that the Internet access, both wireless and using the hotel computer, was intermittent and usually quite slow. I was on vacation so this wasn't particularly important to me, but this would be a problem if you're a business traveler who requires reliable, fast Internet service. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay at this wonderful hotel.

Cleaning service was excellent, room was spotless and breakfast was nice with modest but plentiful food. Old, historic style was charming, but also disappointing: bathroom was VERY small and had the tub version of a SMART car. We had a small balcony which was very nice. Location was convenient; many of the historic sites were within walking distance.

Excellent hotel, 10 minutes walk from Duomo and Uffizi. Great service and a traditional feel to the whole place. The only criticism would be the occassional noise from a bar 50 metres down the road. The Academy restaurant around the corner is a must.

The location of the hotel is great. Near to the sites but away from the crowds. The room was lovely and the shutters kept it nice and dark. The staff were all very friendly. We had a lovely stay in Florence and would defo stay at this hotel again. The terrace is delightful and it would have been nice if the bar was open longer than 8pm as it was so pretty.

This was my second time in Florence and this time did not meet my memory nor my expectations. In regards to this hotel, it is nice inside, but is located near a "kind of rough" part of town. My wife did not like walking down some of the streets at night. On the other hand, you are near and within walking distance of the Academia and other main attractions. We walked to everything we desired to reach. Rooms are clean and the Cappuccinos are the "Best" I had on our whole trip! Please note that if you drive to Florence and are keeping your car, then the garage is going to cost about 16 euros or 21 euros if you have the Hotel's partner come and valet the car in their garage (which is what we did and they took care of the car without an issue). The cost for this was an unexpected surprise to us upon our arrival. Outside of that, it is a nice three star hotel with a good staff.

Unfortunately the property is old and had sewer gas leaking into the room 24/7. We had to keep lav door and closet door closed and buy air cleaner. I don't believe the room should have been rented as it was so very unpleasant. The staff was very pleasant though and kind to us during our stay.

Not knowing about the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised when we saw our room for the price. The staff was very friendly, and helpful in their recommedation for dinner and where to go in Florence. The hotel is centrally located, so all sites are within walking distance. A wonderful hotel, I recommend highly, and will be sure and stay their again on my next visit to Florence.

A charmless hotel. Surly, unhelpful reception staff. Common areas and room did not match photos. A poorly furnished room with scruffy paintwork and an old fashioned, inadequate bathroom with plumbing which did not work properly. Poor value for money. This property has more of a feel of a backpackers' hostel than a hotel. Having travelled extensively in Italy, this is one of the worst hotels I have stayed in.

we had a great stay in Florence in Oct 2006, the hotel was great value, lovely and clean and located approx 10 minute walk from the main places. The character of the hotel added to the Italian experience for me and my 3 children. If I had to think of something negative the only thing I can think of was that there was no coffee making facilities in room and our bathroom was small compared to the other rooms, but not really a problem.

8.38.3

This is a very nice hotel, with some quirks from a American traveler's point of view. First, there was no box of facial tissues in the room. This is something I have never seen in any hotel. Indeed, this was the only hotel that we stayed in during our trip to Italy where there were no facial tissues. To me this was petty. Second, and just a bit quirky, was that there was no shower curtain in the bathtub. Taking a shower and keeping the rest of the bathroom dry was difficult. In fairness, I have seen this in other European hotels, but it seems silly. Thos quirks aside, the hotel has charm, and it is located in a great part of the city, near to the University and the Academia Gallery (David), and a 10-minute walk from the Duomo. Of course, since Florence is so small, nothing is far from anything in the city.

To whom it may concern of the Managementteam of the Orto de Medici hotel: I might have lost my ball point in my room ( I forgor my roomnumber). The pen was the former pen of my father so I am very sad to have lost it although I took special measures to prevent loosing it. It is a silver coloured Parker ballpoint. Could it be you have found it in my bedroom at the Orto de Medici hotel? Thanks for finding out. Greetings H.Derkx

The rooms are really OK. Try to get a room on the backside of the hotel, because the street could be a bit loud at night. If you travel by car, you should plan the route to the hotel with a city map (the one way streets are tricky). I recommend the car drivers to use the parking service, since the hotel has only one parking place for loading direct in front of the hotel. I recommend this hotel for all who want to explore all the sites of interest, because you could reach nearly everything on foot (The Cathedral in about 5 minutes).

Decent place (nothing extraordinary) but way too expensive for what it was offering. Definitely does not deserve the price paid. Plus the waitress was not very friendly when I asked for capuchino for breakfast rather than the regular coffee that they offered (the only place in our 2 week vacation where we saw unfriendly waitress). For the price of the hotel, at least I should have receved an excellent capuchino, rather than the capuchino which tastes horribly. Parking is offered for 21 euro, they come and pick up your car and return it when you need it. It was nice that we could leave our luggage at the hotel after we checked out while we were sightseeing the city.

We all loved this hotel, and would happily stay there again - or recommend it to our friends! The staff were terrific - we were a party of 9 which grew to be one of 11, and consequently had some complicated arrangements to sort out both before and on arrival. Can't praise the professionalism of the reception staff enough! They were helpful and attentive throughout our stay. The hotel facilities would have done credit to a 4 star - we especially loved the terrace, and not just for its historical associations. Being in the university quarter also gave us access to some good restaurants at very reasonable prices.

We had a quadroom (1 king and 2 double beds) on the top floor and were very pleased with size, cleanliness, and atmosphere of the room. Our room faced toward the Accademia (1 block from the hotel)and we could also see the Duomo. Breakfast was also very nice. Hotel is a few blocks outside of the tourist center, which we enjoyed (quieter and nice neighborhood). While we walked with our roller suitcases to the hotel from the train station, the Florence sidewalks are very narrow which makes this more of a chore than normal - consider a taxi if you have heavy bags.

Orto was a great hotel for the money. We had an inner facing room, which was very very quiet (slept great!). Couldn't tell we were next to the elevator. Good storage, Very nicely appointed bathroom (great shower - asked for shower, didn't need/want bath), very nice and helpful staff, very nice breakfast and breakfast room (they will make you eggs if you ask), and Florence is so small you can get anywhere from here in short time. We paid something like $170USD per night, if I recall. There is lobby, but who needs that? I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone seeking a quiet place, and a good value.

In an excellent location one block from Piazza San Marco within easy walking distance of the Duomo. The triple was quiet and spacious. The halls have interesting Italian pieces. The English-speaking front desk staff made Airport Shuttle arrangements, car rental return, and wake-up calls a breeze. Nice patio deck area outside the beakfast room. Inviting reading/tv lounge with parquet floors and selection of books. Wonderful trattoria across the street where I had the best gorgonzola gnocchi of my entire stay. We enjoyed our stay at Orto de Medici. The room was spacious enough for three people and we enjoyed having a balcony to ourselves. Breakfast room was excellent. The staff was also very helpful. Only complaint would be with having the hotel make reservations at the Uffizi and Accademia Museums. They charged each of us a fee almost equal to the admission for the museum for making the reservations. $6.00 euros for a $6.50 admission (x3) I wished they would have mentioned this to us before making the reservations. It is just slightly off the beaten path, but very easy to get to in a car. The valet parking was a bit expensive at 22 Euros a night. The room was very nice, and breakfast was superb in a patio eating area attached to the indoor serving area. I would definitely stay there again.

Hotel should be rated much higher than a 3 star. This is a great hotel with beautiful rooms. I had a very spacious single with air conditioning and a huge private bathroom. I cannot complain at all about the room. The room was also very quiet. The public areas are very nice. They have a terrace bar serving drinks in the evening. The breakfast is great and you can have it either in the dining room or on the roof top patio. Location is fine. Florence is very small and it was only a five minute walk to the Duomo. It's not right in the middle of things, but, this isn't such a bad thing, especially because you don't hear any street noise at night. Staff was very nice. My only complaint is that they didn't have internet access.

We enjoyed our stay at Orto de Medici in Firenze. Although it was very hot (38 C or 101 F) the aircondition worked quite well. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. The hotel is located 1/2 walk from the main downtown sites so bring your sneakers. Breakfast is rather poor but I believe this is what to expect in Italy.

This hotel is an excellent value in a nice area. It is run professionally yet friendly. It is rated three star yet it is closer to four even for a smallish hotel. The high ceilings and spacious room was very nice. The breakfast was more than adequate and nice on the terrace.

The Hotel Orto de'Medici is an elegant small hotel offering all the amenities. The staff was so friendly, efficient and most helpful. Their breakfast presentation on the terrace was excellent. I probably shouldn't say this, but I loved soaking in the bathtub after a long day of exploration, most relaxing. If location is everything, the Hotel has that also. It is located within a short walking distance of all the main sights and the train station. I highly recommend this hotel and would return there again in a heartbeat!!!

This was a great example of how boutique style hotels excel over their larger rivals. The hotel was simple but beautifully presented. The room was spacious and combined modern with a touch of the original. The room also had a balcony with a good view over the city. The breakfast area that included a large outdoor dining area was a gem and the choice and service first class. Location was equally good being close to the key attractions whilst providing a sanctuary of peace when the bustle of the city became too much.

A great location. A lovely charming independant hotel. I absolutely love their high ceilings and especially their courtyard. Cocktails in the later afternoon Tuscan summer! It is a stone's throw from the original 'David', which is a plus. Breakfast is basic, but it is true for almost all small Italian hotels. No internet except dial-up, which was a shame. A/C worked great, and the rooms were nice and quiet, even though ours was close to the breakfast room. Overall- highly Reccomended!

It was a decent hotel. Just good enough to stay and sleep for the nights. We paid $118 euros per night, should have been more like $80 for what you get because the breakfast was continental and the sitting areas are not the best. I'd get a better hotel for that price, there are so many in that area and you can start seeing the city from any part of the city, I recommend staying somewhere closer to the Gallery where the main attraction, statue of David, is.

We had a quadruple room which was great. It was very large compared to rooms we had in other cities. The front desk was also very helpful. They prebooked tours for me per my request. The location was great , very close to the major attractions.

A real gem once inside. The nearby environs are not great but you are very close to the markets and the duomo. Accademia only two blocks! Good value and very helpful front desk staff.

Despite the large numbers of small/medium sized hotels in Florence, I wouldn't be looking to stop anywhere other than here on my next visit. Just how I hoped it would be.

We would happily stay again on our next trip. The location was great - a short walk from the centre - just enought to return to the quiet oasis of the hotel. we had a great room on the fourth floor with a balcony and bistro set - with a view of Duomo. The breakfast was outanding and offered on the terrace which was a perfect start to the morning. We asked the hotel to pre-book our museums and a dinner and they were very kind and efficient. The hotel is a 3 minute walk from the Accademia to see the David statue. Enjoy!

Excellent choice for short (or longer) stay in Florence. Very good location, quiet street but close to Accedemia, only a few minutes walk to San Lorenzo, Duomo etc and surrounded by good restaurants, bars etc. Very welcoming and helpful staff, all facilities needed in room and Hotel and cool even in June heat!! Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again when returning to Florence.

Charming and classy hotel. Elegant simplicity. Tastefull.Very good for the price and location. Lovely breakfast area and terrace. Very kind staff. Personal attention. Can be loud if you happen to have rude people in the room near but I would surely reccomend this hotel to anyone. After a long day walking in Florence it is nice to be able to have diner at one of the excellent restaurants right on the other side of the street and slide in bed right after !

From the time we booked in to the time we left, everything was perfect. the staff were great, room 40 brilliant and and the added bonus being that the hotel has a room available to store luggage after check out until you need it to go to the airport. if I had to be really "picky" I would say that the breakfast could have been more exciting. As regards location, about a 10min. walk from San Lorenzo,so not surrounded by noise. I slept like a trooper!

I had read the Hotel Orto de'Medici guest reviews on this site prior to booking a room. Most were favorable if not excellent and still my expectations were exceeded. The hotel was immaculate, the staff friendly and helpful, the room spacious and comfortable. All in all, the Hotel Orto de'Medici has a lovely, generous feeling about it and I can't say enough good things about my visit there.

The Orto de'Medici was a wonderful place to stay -- easy walking distance to the central part of Florence, and a lovely little hotel. The staff was extremely helpful throughout our stay, helping us get settled and giving advice about the city. We would definitely stay there again!

It was nice. If going by car, it was very difficult to get there. But it was close to all of the attractions which made it very convenient. The breakfast was like any other breafast that they serve in hotels in Italy (Cold breakfast).

The woman working at the desk was incredibly friendly and helpful, and she spoke perfect English. The location was not crowded (in November) but very close to the Accademia museum and an easy walk to Uffizi and Arno river. The common room is very luxurious with a huge tv. I chose a single room, and it was small and cozy. The only challenge was the half-sized tub with no shower curtain, so I had to sit and aim the flexible shower head very carefully.

We stayed during off season and felt the room was reasonably priced. The rates for the same room during high season seem to be really high, however! We`d stay again during off season, but try to get a quieter room on the off-street side of the hotel. The location was very convenient and the service excellent!

Greeeeeat hotel, from the location, atmosphere, and staff, to restaurants, shopping, and Dumo every thing was fantastic. The hotel is very conveniently located near the train station (only 10 min walk) and every thing we needed to have around us. The breakfast was also very good, and the breakfast room, you just don’t want to leave, beautiful. All of us enjoyed the hotel orto de medici and we loved Florence, and yes we would definitely go back there again, no hesitation.

We loved our stay at hotel Orto de Medici. It's a beautiful hotel, located close to all the major attractions. The Duomo was within 5 minute walk and the Uffizi was a 10 minute walk. Our quadruple room was very spacious and the decor was warm and elegent. I loved the chandelier in our room. We were unable to get a room with a balcony, but our windows were large with a nice view overlooking the hotel's outdoor terrace and bar below. The hotel was quiet since it was located on a small street with little traffic. Breakfast in the morning was included in the room rate, and included a variety of pastries, bread, jam, fruit, cereal, juice and coffee. The staff was very helpful and courteous. They reserved tickets ahead of time for to the Uffizi and Galleria Del Accedemia (which helped us tremendously since we were able to walk right into the museum and avoid long lines). If I am in Florence again, I will definitely stay at this hotel. I would recommend this hotel without any hestiation.

A hotel of the first rate. Very familiar atmosphere (only 31 rooms), comfortable and a very good relationship between price and quality. The room (room nr.32) and the bathroom was very spacious and clean. The homepage pictures are corresponding with the reality. If you like quiet rooms ask for a room to the courtyard. Very nice breakfast room with terrace. Breakfast is very good. An excellent coffee, proscuitto, cheese, granola, etc... Opposed the hotel there is a good restaurant called Mimmo. Recommended. We will stay again in this hotel.
