Room was like in photo. Good bathroom. Great view of Durmo. Staff was welcoming and very helpful. Very close to museum with David statue. Also close to the Durmo. Close to location to wash/dry clothes and grocery store. Quiet location, but rooms were not sound-proof from other rooms and hallway. Good continental breakfast.

The entrance is not appealing at all. The staff were not friendly at all. My room was clean and well air conditioned, but the shower leaked terribly. The breakfasts were average (yoghurt, croissants, same fruit every day). However, for the price, it is located centrally, if you factor in that you don't stay in your room very much of the time. I, however, would not return.

excellent location. Staffs are professional and very helpful. We booked 2 hotels for our trip to Italy, this California and one in Rome. Both cost the same price but California was way more professional, with friendly staffs and more services. We even purchased a tour through the hotel. Room are tiny but clean and well furnished.

Serious & business-like staff at front desk but not outwardly friendly or offering any extra services or advice like some other hotels in Italy. Awkward entry but nice once you enter hotel lobby & public areas, which are on 2nd floor, it is fine with large, clean & attractive areas. Regarding entry: it is difficult to get to main floor(there is a lift but then you have to walk either up or down 1 flight anyway with your bags) There are 2 outdoor patio areas that are nice to relax on and the rooms were quiet except that the building next door was having construction done so the vibrations of their drilling woke us up and made it impossible to take a mid afternoon rest, so you might want to make sure your room is away from this area. We only stayed 1 night & were out most of time so it didn't matter too much. Without the construction, it was actually extremely quiet & could not hear other guests or outside activity even though it is in a central area. Great location with walking distance to all centrally located major sites. Should spend a minimum of 2 nights in Florence proper.

On the website they state that wi-fi connection is free. However, when you get there it turns out you have to pay for any type of internet connection. On a positive note room service was not expensive.

We stayed for one night at the hotel, and were very surprised to find out that it's is being renovated, so we had the view of wooden and iron sticks. The hotel is on the first floor of a building without an elevator so if you have a lot of luggage it might be a problem. The room has a jacuzzi which leaks all over the bathroom. There is no private parking and the garage is almost half of the room price, so take this in mind. A good thing that it's very close to the historical center and relatively cheap.

hotel itself very quiet; noise due to renovation work next door during the day. Off season rates for quality as compared to other hotels in Florence very good especially in my "double single occupancy" room, but I would have been disappointed had I paid full price. I would say not quite 3 stars (and the breakfast definitely not) but then this is Florence. Quality of contact with staff depends on who is on duty at reception desk and in breakfast room.

The location of Hotel California is excellent (just behind the Duomo). Also excellent is the breakfast. A coffee machine w/many options, breads, cakes, juice, FRESH FRUITS!!!!Staff is nice and on top of everything. We stayed in the renovated area, in a room w/jacuzzi, but since there was no shower curtain or anything, taking a shower made the (enourmous) bathroom wet- I had to sacrifice one of the bath towels to put on the floor...The room is crowded with furniture and we couldn´t move in there very comfortably. This is one of the reasons I couldnt give it a 10. The other problem is that to go to this renovated area there is no elevator/lift so we had to carry the luggages down the stairs.(Hotel/breakfast) is on the 2nd floor and the new area on the 1st but no lift. I liked staying in there and would come back.P.S.Venere has a picture of the lobby that does not correspond to the real one, which is crowded w/furniture and other stuff and the lobby is small, almost no room for checkin in/out with the entrance/exit door right behind you.

This Hotel exceeded our expectations. It was in a great location - though you had to really look for the sign on the door and we almost walked past it. On arrival the front was very decieving and we had our doubts, the entrance too was a concern with a dark stairway and very old and dank elevator. But reaching the front desk it was clean, bright and airy. The staff was pleasant if a bit reserved, the room was a welcome surprise with comfortable beds, lovely redone bathrooms, quite with a large roof top garden right outside. It was a welcome haven to come back to after a busy day of sight seeing. We were told we were in the newer part of the hotel and I'm sure it made a big differance. The included breakfast was very good.

The hotel was difficult to find. on the website its indicated as being off a side street of via ricassoli on the left? the hotel is not on a side street and its on the right! The signage is not very clear at night so i passed it twice until they switched on the neon lights. 20 min from train station is a much more realistic estimate, unless there's a specific route that takes 5-10 min in which case they should provide the directions! The hotel was very clean, staff were friendly, room was not very spacious.

This was our second stay at Hotel California. The owners are the sweetest people in the world. The hotel was a little noisy during the day due to construction surrounding the hotel, but overall our stay was pleasant. Rooms are spacious & clean. Two years ago we stayed there with our family of 15 people. The owners were very accommodating considering our group of adults & children. That is why we went there again this year. The breakfast on the roof was most enjoyable.

The hotel is pretty basic, but centrally-located and clean. The prices are fine considering that Florence is a quite expensive city altogether. I would recommend this hotel for people looking for a simple quiet affordable room close to many attractions. The staff is helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is mediocre. The rooms are big enough (most time will be spent wandering the streets of Florence anyways). Don't let the entrance scare you away! When you enter the building, you must walk some dark ugly-looking stairs to get to the hotel. Extra tip: request a room with a direct view of the Duomo.

Other than the entrance (which doesn't let you know that you are in a hotel) it was a very good experience for us. The hotel is excellently located, rooms were clean, and the staff were friendly and provided very helpful information. Suggest that the check out time should be at least 12:00 noon as is the practice in other places.

Quality of internet service offered was very poor: one PC in front of the welcoming door and expensive tarif available. There are 2 public tarifs but when we asked for the "cheapest" (3 euros=30minuntes) there were not cards so we had to pay for the expensive one (6 euros=1hour) to check the fly. Bath was large and new but Jacuzzi did not work.

Our issue was that due to the construction and a strong rainstorm the floor of our room was very wet when we awoke. The water soaked into the bedspread hems and our luggage. I was not impressed by the lack of concern from the management. They did render us new bedspreads and cleaned up the water. We had to ask for more "bathmats" which the hotel had used to attempt to prevent the water from coming in under the window/doors. The hotel is in a very convenient section of town and seemed safe and quiet. The first floor entrance is a bit off putting but upon arrival via the lift the hotel was fine. It is hard to find any rooms in Florence for that price so that is a plus.

We liked the hotel, and the breakfasts were good. Only seemed like one person spoke English, but they were on top of things, like a burned out bulb. We liked the location, up the street from the Duomo and on the same street as the Ufizzi musuem.

Hotel California is located halfway between the Duomo and the Accademia (about 1.5 blocks from each). There's an elevator if you want, but it's only on the second floor (3rd floor American). The people running the hotel are very helpful and serve a nice continental breakfast. The public space is rather limited, but you don't go to Florence to hang around in the public space at the hotel!! We had a very nice experience.

The hotel location is excellent and the rooms were clean. However, the rooms were somewhat lacking. We were traveling with another couple and we were booked into adjacent rooms 111 and 112. The wall between the rooms was so thin we could talk to each other in a normal voice and easily understand each other. Infact our friends could even hear me dial out on my cell phone. Our shower was also very small (about 2 ft x 2.5 ft). I'm average size and could not even turn around in the shower. The hotel is OK for a short stay, but try not to get rooms 111 or 112 if you want privacy.

Hotel California was excellent value for money - we stayed a week. Staff polite and helpful. Twin room quiet with good view of Duomo from balcony. Breakfast was good with plenty of cereals, yoghurts, cheese & ham with bread rolls, toast, jams, croissants and always a very large attractive bowl of fresh fruit. Terrace is being renovated by builders at present but not warm enough yet to sit outside in early a.m. Our room was large, bathroom a little cramped but very clean. Lockable safe in wardrobe. When arriving look for blue No. 30 Via Ricasoli. Streets are dual numbered - red nos. are for shops. Hotel north of Via Pucci on rt. Situation for sightseeing fantastic. Half way between Duomo and Accademia Gallery. Exceeded our expectations - would certainly go back to Hotel California again. PS You get used to the lift- not a problem!

Small, family run hotel very close to Duomo and other attractions. Staff was very responsive and helpful. Although the rooms are small, as are many Italian hotels, they were most accomodating to put our group (3 rooms)together. Rooms were cleaned each day very well. Breakfast good and they allowed our group to use the breakfast room for dinner one night. We had a rental car for a few days and they were most helpful to have the garage deliver and pick up our vehicle. Overall a most enjoyable stay.

We had a beautiful room with a view of the Duomo. The hotel was well located, within walking distance of both the train station and city center. Breakfast was good. The only negative was the thin walls which allowed noises, compounded by the construction work at the front of the hotel.

We did not receive the room as requested and confirmed. Upon check-out, the bill was double the confirmation. Great location, only 5-10 minute walk from Firenze SMN, you don't need to take a cab. And the hotel was more than accommodating when we had to change our check-in due to train delay. The Accademia is to the right of the hotel and to the left is the Duomo. You can't beat the location. The free continental breakfast is nice and an added bonus is the small bar in the lobby. For the price it is a good hotel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel California - the rooms were clean & spacious and the staff, particularly Gabriella, was very kind and helpful. The location is fantastic - only steps away from the Duomo & Accademia! And the rest of Firenze is a pleasant walk away as well. The only downside to this stay is that there were lots of very loud noises outside our window that made sleep in the morning very difficult. In addition to loud trash pickups, there was also construction going on and a cafe right below us. Overall, we would recommend this hotel to people on a budget who are looking for a clean hotel in a great location.

It was as the reviews said: clean, tidy, welcoming and right in the heart of Florence. It doesn't have a classic entrance, but it does have sneaky views of the Duomo and a lovely cool terrace. It's scarily difficult to drive to, no map can help you round the one way system - only satnav! But once there, it's right at the heart of the Florence with all the sights on the doorstep. It was our first trip to the city, but it won't be our last!

The best thing about this property is its location; just 2 minutes walk to the Piazza Duomo. Our room was quite small (probably 'coz we got a quadruple type). Seems we got a room that's not yet really ready for occupancy because there were unpainted parts visible. Well, enough that we had a place to spend a night..as long as it has functioning a/c and private bathroom(w/c is hard to find at a reasonable price in the center of Firenze). The beds were quite hard though. Breakfast was ok but not sumptuous. All in all, our stay was ok, if it was not great. Tip: When you stroll around Piazza Duomo or even in the buses, always pay attention and take care of your bags or belongings. There are a lot of pick pockets..men..and some dress well and mix w/ the tourists.

Great centrally located hotel. We walked from the train station to the California. We did have packs which made it a bit easier. The sign made it easy to spot, and it does have a fairly large lift. Once you find the hotel the location is excellent. You can walk to all major attractions. We drove there and as in most old European cities it is challenging getting to the center of town due to many one way streets. There is no street parking and no easily accessible parking garages. They offered a parking service where the car was picked up and delivered to us which worked well for 1 euro per hour. Upon arrival you may find the entrance a little intimidating, you have to go up several flights of stairs or a really old elevator to get to the reception. Once there everything is very nice including the rooms and a very nice breakfast area. Very good value overall.

Well, very noisy rooms: I could hear people from the next room taking their shower. Don't try to sleep if you don't bring hearplugs: you hear people walking in the corridor as if they were in your room. The breakfast was everything but impressive, and the terrace doesn't save it all. I booked a single room, I got a double, so I had enough space. The location is a good point, 3min from the Duomo. Overall not the greatest hotel I've ever seen, I'm pretty sure you can find other places with the same central location.

Although I had some small difficulties to find the hotel, and some doubts rose when I saw the entrance hall, everything was simoultaneously forgotten when I met the staff and saw my room, which was nicely furnished and clean. The room was really cosy and the bathroom left nothing to wish. The breakfast was served in a hall with big windows overlooking a nice terrace, where I spent a couple of hours with a superb bottle of red wine (5 euros!) and a good book in the evening before dinner. I really enjoyed this little hotel, and being a frequent traveller in Italy, it was absolutely worth the money charged. Besides the hotel being situated a couple of hundred meters from the Dome and ten minutes walking distance from the Santa Maria Novella railway-station, makes it even better. I guess no one will be disappointed choosing this Hotel California for their stay in Firenze. It just has a lot of hearth...

The public bath is a little small and not very convienent, because there is only one shower, and one toilet (unless there was another one somewhere I didn't see). Overall, great stay though!

Hotel California is conveniently located within walking distance to all sights. We found the room to be updated, roomy, and clean, and the continental breakfast was excellent when compared to the other hotels we stayed at during our trip to Italy. Another nice feature is that the hotel has a lift so you're not stuck hauling your luggage up flights of stairs. The hotel is family owned and everyone was attentive and extremely helpful. I have no hesitations in recommending this hotel.

Fantastic location - 2 minutes fromt he Duomo. The Hotel was very clean and good vale. We had a triple roomm. There was a mosquito repellant plug in which was reassuring but there were no problems with the little blighters! We visited in August time, and although it was busy, the hotel was very quiet. Some nice little restaurants close by and easy to walk to all the attractions. only gripe was that they wanted us to pay cash as it was a special rate booked late via Venere. Apart from that, i would stay thhere again.

Very well located place, quiet, with a helpfull and friendly staff and some rooms quite nice. The common areas and breakfast only correct. Nice meals close to the market, in the traditional trattorias. Nice place to young couples, small groups or families and people who prefers the downtowns.

A nice hotel in an unobtrusive building and rooms with character. My room faced a courtyard, so was quiet but had no view. However, it was right next to the breakfast room, and the walls thin, so I was woken up very early. The staff wasn´t as warm as I could have hoped, but as a young woman travelling alone, who didn´t speak Italian and was only staying one night, perhaps not surprising. However, I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there again -the price is great value for the location, which you cannot beat in Florence!

It was a very enjoyable visit. The location of the hotel was great in the center of the city. We would stay again any time we are visiting. Breakfast was nice and the hotel was clean and quiet. A delightful place.

The hotel was very clean and the staff was very nice. The staff all spoke excellent English and their recommendations for the sights and restaurants were very good. The only thing that bothered us were the towels. They were so thin that out entire family referred to them as napkins. They were literally the same type of material as the restaurant napkins. With that exception, I would reccommend the hotel for its location, charm and cleaniless.

Great location and fabulous view from our room. We opened a bottle of wine (which we purchased at the front desk!) and enjoyed it on the balcony of our room! Loved Florence and the price was right at the Hotel California!

I had booked a single room, which was right next to the reception. The room was small but clean. The noise from the street was the only negative point. I got a very good deal for the room, 45 euros instead of 125 Euro as mentioned in the room. It is not worth 125 euros anyway. Very good price for the quality. Very close to the Duomo and San Lorenzo's market. I will go back.

If your traveling alone its a bit scare at first b.c streets are empty, but its extremely close to everything (Duomo & Galleria). The staff could be a little more friendly not all of them speak English.

This hotel's only saving grace was its location. It is within walking distance of all the major attractions in Florence, which was nice. It is also within walking distance to the train station, but yet not too close. However, this was all offset by the unfriendly staff at the hotel. They seemed to be indifferent to our stay. Also, one of the staff members was extremely rude to us at breakfast and said all of the seats were reserved for a group that was also staying at the hotel. We were kept up at night by the fact we could hear the people talking in the room next to us or in the lobby of the hotel (we were near the front). What really stuck out as a negative was that our bathroom smelled like sewer. I have stayed at several hotels at Europe and have become accustomed to the differences from US hotels. However, this hotel was one of the worst. When in Florence again I will stay at a different hotel in the same area.

The front desk staff was not very welcoming. There was a hole in the bathroom wall that had dirt and dust oozing out of it over the sink. The breakfast was not good.

Appears that Hotel California caters largely to middle class clientele. The staff was very accomodating and did an excellent job of catering to our needs. We only had the complimentary breakfasts each morning - very good with good service. Would consider staying there again.

It is a SUPER location, very close to the Duomo, shopping. The entry off the steet, however, is misleading. One gets the feel that you're entering some cheap tenament building. Once you take the lift to the first floor, however, it's all quite nice.

The management is very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was a nice treat. Oddly only 20+ some rooms on one floor of a larger building, and I'm not sure the lift was operational, but our room for 3 was large with a lovely marble bath and our own little balcony. The staff and owners were very friendly and made us feel very welcome.

Do not be fooled. The Photos on the web site are NOTHING like what we experienced at this hotel. We were given a room that was small, dirty, and poorly maintained. The small window faced the ugly interior courtyard (unlike in the photo), and the shutter fell off during our stay but was not repaired. The room was situated directly off the breakfast "corridor room" so forget about any quiet sleep in. The walls were so thin you literally could hear EVERYthing that went on next door. It felt like a poor back packers but at a premium price (140EURO). The public areas are basic. The entrance and lifts are primitive. I know there were other rooms that were much better and I am sure the better reviews are about them. No-one could have been impressed with the room we got. This was our worst hotel experience in Italy and really put a dampner on the whole experience in Firenze. I would not recommend this hotel and I feel sorry for anyone who sees the web/brochure picture and gets room 111.

Location is good as it is quite but close to the center (3 min walk from duomo). the only two negative points are: - sound proofing between room sdoes not exist so oyu hear EVERYTHING from next room - breakfast is nothing to look forward to Overall, an OK to good hotel for the price.

The walls in the room were a bit banged up... touch up paint could've taken care of that with minimal effort. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The rooms were quiet, the breakfast was wonderful and our location was perfect for our visit. The front desk personnel were extremely helpful and very courteous... we will definitely stay here again!

Great hotel, good value, good location. Rooftop patio, while not quite like the photos was a welcome respite from the crowds. Hotel itself is on the second floor of an old building, with lots of very long corridors and the entire hotel has tiled floors which are very noisy. Helpful staff, spotlessly clean, adequate breakfast. Spent 5 nights here, would certainly go back.

Location is good but this hotel is not worth it for the price given the room and the amenities provided. The room is mediocre and the elevator is so bad and is not available 24/7. Breakfast is mediocre. The only advantage is that it is close to the Academia and Duomo. Will not stay in this hotel again.
