Travelling with my missus, Hotel Bavaria was a unique experience. Somehow it gave an authentic classic feeling. Most importantly was it's location which was in the city centre and close to the tourist attractions.

We had trouble finding the hotel as it had no street frontage a small sign indicated it was behind a large door. Up two very steep flights of stairs to reception, then another steep flight to a large room the back of which lead to more steps another room and more steep steps to our door. The room was huge with a king size bed and two singles basic furniture but the bed was clean and comfortable. The shower had little hot water and very low pressure.Breakfast was not very good with a very limited choice of food it was the worst we encountered on our trip. On the plus side our room had a view of the Duomo and the hotel was near the main Duomo area with it's shops and restaurants.

The rooms and the building itself are stunning and immaculately kept. The location could not be better—two blocks from the Duomo! Waking up each morning in our glorious room to the sounds of ancient church bells was an unforgettable experience. The modern bathrooms were clean and in good working order. We were prepared for a meager breakfast of a croissant and a cup of instant coffee on a tray at our door. We were pleasantly surprised that the charming dining room was set with a lovely breakfast spread of yogurt, fruit, assorted cereals, bread and butter, coffee, tea and juice. It was a great way to start our day and plan our activities. My elderly father was with us and had a medical scare. The staff were so concerned and helpful. Everything turned out alright, but I won't forget the kindness of the staff in helping us get in touch with my father's doctor in the States, when our phones had not yet been activated. You should be aware that the Bavaria is located on the third and fourth floors of a 16th century palazzo, so there is no elevator, and since the ceilings are very high on each floor, there are a LOT of stairs. This was not a problem for us, but it was difficult for my 80-year-old father at the end of a long day of sightseeing. I highly recommend the Hotel Bavaria, and would stay here again!

Great Location, friendly & helpful staff, good value for money.Very large rooms great for a family. We were only staying for a night so the inconvienience of a shared bathroom and basic facilities was not a problem. There's a small supermarket nearby to get drinks and snacks if needed. If you're looking for a reasonable no frills place to stay in central Florence at a good price it's fits the bill.

It was not a Hotel, It was a historical house with beautiful rooms, so quite and nice with helpful stuff but there were 2 main problems: 1)The stairs which there were 64 and its hard if you travel with luggage and you are not so young! 2) It was share bathroom and there were 2 of them and at mornings they were usually occupied. on of them was in the breakfast room which we didn't like. but it is placed in the best part of the city and I think with out these problems you have to pay so much more for the same accommodation.

We stayed 2 nights in Bavaria and honestly, it was great! The hotel is in the heart of Florence (and I am not exaggerating, it is actually 3 min away from the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore). The building dates back to the 16th century and you feel the history in every room. Wireless internet is available only on the first floor because of the very thick walls (personally I didn't find that problematic). On the second floor, there is one bathroom/toilet for all the rooms, but well it was always clean, and despite the wait at some moments it was quite OK. The double I stayed at was great, very simply but nicely decorated. The staff was great! Everyone was very nice and helpful, they do know great places to eat, bars, places to walk around, they helped us with booking some museums. Plus the price of the rooms is great!

Perhaps it should be noted that the rooms overlooking the street are rather noisy. I haven't walked around the hotel to ascertain the type and number of rooms available. I think this question should be removed.

We absolutely loved this hotel with its old charm! Thick walls, high wooden ceilings, extremely spacious rooms. We chose a room with a private nice bathroom and a wonderful view over the rooftops to the cathedral. We felt like the city was our home walking out of the heavy gates to the small cozy street in the very center with lots of affordable shops and eateries. The service was personal and very pleasant and the included breakfast was very good. I truly recommend it to everyone, except for people having a hard time with stairs as there is no elevator and the hotel starts at the third floor. Would love to come back to stay at this hotel again.

Such a lovely place to stay - full of characheter and brilliant location - will definatly come back when in Florence again. Staff all very friendly and welcoming. breakfasts fine, although coffee poor. only difficulty was finding the adress when arrived - explanation of the colour of the road number would have ben helpful and would have saved quite a bit of trapsing up and down the road - although shopping was incorporated obviously :)

I can't say enough about Hotel Bavaria, except stay here when in Florence! We could almost reach out and touch the Duomo, the room and bathroom was clean, large and really nice. The staff were friendly, the breakfast was good, and the location can't be beat. Make sure you go to Grom for your Gelato.

The only & major problem with this hotel is not the fault of the people at the hotel: it is EXTREMELY difficult to park anywhere near the hotel, and finding the parking and finding one's way back to the hotel from the parking are extremely difficult. Staff is marvellous & friendly, atmosphere great. I think backpackers and train travellers would be most happy with this hotel.

We had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Bavaria. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The palace itself was amazing - our room was huge with a wonderful ceiling. We can't wait to go back there one day. We got used to climbing the stairs up to it, so it got us into shape for climbing up the Duomo at the end of our stay. Only disappointment was the poor coffee for breakfast!! Otherwise, no complaints at all.

For 41 Euro, it was a good bargain, even with shared bathroom. There is a sink in the room, so at least you can wash and have water. Breakfast is good. 3rd floor is very high, is hard for some people to get there, especially with luggage. Had some problems with mosquitoes.

Room was spacious and shared area was also large. Breakfast was nice and staff provided even when we had to leave early. Staff was knowledgeable and helpful with planning activities and trips. Enjoyed an easy walk to Duomo and Uffizi from the hotel. The only downsides were lack of air conditioning, but fan made room comfortable, and like most old Florentine buildings, no elevator makes lugging baggage a pain, street was secluded, which was both nice and a little creepy. I would not let these detract me and would use this hotel again.

Great, great hotel! Provides a light Italian breakfast right alongside 16th century frescoes (they were on the ceiling of our huge room, which also had big picture windows out onto the street). Also, the woman at the reception desk gave us a map and tips for where to eat, and everyone at the hotel spoke English (along with a few other languages, I think...) They let us leave our bags after we checked out and helped us look up information about bus reservations in Italian. Highly recommend it! Just consider whether you might want an in-room bathroom; the one shared toilet, even with the shower in our room, made for an occasional awkward wait in the morning.

Very expensive for the service. No TV sets ! Bare floors. No carpets. No phonic isolation, can hear other's people conversation. Breakfast very spartan, no meat. Many stairs to climb.Floor vibrating when walk, induce vibration on doors , that rattle and make noise. Very weird. Good location.

Location of the hotel is really excellent. We had full sight of the dome from our windows. The age of the building (1600 more or less...) implies some possible complications: the hotel is at the II floor with no lift; our room was excellent but in a renovated (without particular aesthetic sense) part of the building .

I don't know if its the fact that I don't speak Italian (only English) or if its my look (Asian) but I find the guy in the front desk very rude when I arrived. Apart from that, the hotel is good, the room is not so spacious but hey, you get what you pay. The location is excellent too!

For a first timer it was difficult to find the place. I understand, that in a historical building you cannot place large signs indicating the place. Instead, on web pages you should warn on the invisibility, and locate the place using landmarks visible easily.

WOW!!! This was our first impression as soon as we walked in our room... We stayed in a huuuuge room with private bathroom (for italian guests - non c'è il bidet)with a double bed (matress was still confortable, though not that stiff anymore)and 2 single beds, a family room. It had a view on the Duomo!!! And it was incredibly quiet as it is separeted from the other rooms of the second floor, which all have access from the common hall. It was cold outside and the room was not very hot, thing that made us very happy but maybe the average of people would have found it a bit cold. The breakfast was excellent compared to the price (amazing for Firenze!!)and the one-star standard of the hotel. We expected the classic milk and coffee with one small bread roll and a bit of jam, but it was a buffet bfast, with cereals, yougurt, fresh rolls, different kind of dry biscuits, butter, jam, marmelade, liver patè, honey, fruit juice, coffee, milk, tea and perhaps something I am forgetting. Probably Northern European and American guests would find it poor, but please remember this is a ONE STAR HOTEL, for that price you CAN'T find anything better, nowhere. The price of the room amounts to the price of an English breakfast we have paid in a low standard hotel in London... We think that the pics of the website genuinely represent the hotel. Staff veeeeery friendly. Three floors to climb are good for your hearth and legs! but if you have difficulties ambulating this is not for you (nor is the Duomo and other momuments, unfortunately) For us it has been a dream-come-true stay in Florence and we'll recommend this hotel to all our acquaintances. Thank you Bavaria :-)

I think as this hotel as the best solution for a quick visit of the city. First of all for the location: 2 minutes walk from the Dome, the Piazza della Signoria and from the incredible restaurant Il Sasso di Dante (my personal suggest) :) Our room was quite and beautiful, the shared bathroom comfortable and clean ... how can I ask for more?

The room was huge and exactly what we expected. The only disconcerting note was that the floor flexed when one walked across it, but that was the case at the Uffizi too. The steps weren't too much for us, both in our mid-60s, but I certainly didn't look forward to them at the end of a long day.

Lenny was a gracious host and very helpful. Climbing the stairs with our luggage was difficult but we found that in most every place we stayed in Italy. The hotel was perfectly located and within walking distance of all main attractions. The street had shopping, a mercado, restaurants close by, but at the same time the street was quiet at night. Breakfast was a typical European breakfast and just enough to get you on your way. This is a converted palace so every sound echoed and voices carried. The guests tended to be quiet at night though. And....the best shower in Florence and possibly Italy for that matter. We would return again and were very happy with the Bavaria.

After our splendid cycle-tour of Tuscany, we decided to end the adventure in Florence. And what a delightful welcome the "Hotel Bavaria" gave us courtesy of Lenny. For a start they had an ideal spot to leave the bikes.[If you can cycle round Tuscany, you can carry the bikes up a few flights of stairs!!]This enabled us to relax and enjoy the amazing city. The staff were all pleasant and not too heavy with the hospitality training if you know what I mean.[Relaxed but attentive where required]. This manner kind of pervades ones stay at "Bavaria". Does it have German owners we asked ourselves? Who cares? Great place in a brilliant location.

It was really nice to stay in an old palace, however the location is the hotel's good and bad point in one - excellent as very central to major attractions, horrible due to the noise outside. Breakfasts were very basic, not enough for my fiance:) The hotel was very clean, shared bathrooms were not a problem. Overall, it was a really nice and enjoyable stay (apart from the noise outside!), but you can find a 3-star hotel with own bathroom at the same price.

This hotel is on short distance of the railway station, in the center of the city. You can reach all important historical buildings and all shops and restaurants with a small walk, the location is perfect! Only disadvantage is that there's no elevator and the hotel is located on the 3rd floor! The building itself is great, a 15th-century palazzo, we had a nice stay!

Having stayed in Florence nearly a dozen times over the past two decades, the greeting at the Bavaria was exceptional. We were warmly greeted and given maps of the city with helpful information of what to do and where to eat which we really appreciated. However, the water turning off in mid-shower then up to a cup at a time with a head full of shampoo was not fun which happened on the first morning. Nor were the 94 steps to our room in Florence's heat but that's typical. Our room was easily in the 90s at night, no A/C but they did have a foil packet to plug in and retard mosquitos if we kept the window open. In that kind of heat you want to take an extra shower but the amenities are sparse, only a thin packet of soap. Breakfast is fair, nothing exceptional and they are strict about when it is served, nothing hot (caffe) before 7:30. For 80 euros a night I expected a little more comfort and a dependable shower, instead it is a fairly bare bones accomodation.Great location.

Very simple room, appropriate to the price. Staff was very helpful and pleasant. Super central location. On third floor of old building. No elevators. Shared washrooms shared among several rooms, but we didn't have any real problems in the mornings. WiFi is a pretty weak signal. We were the closest room to the office and got only spotty coverage in our room. But could get access in the breakfast room, which was next to the office. The included breakfast was the best out of our European trip--not anything fancy, but the yogurt, cereal, and brown bread and cheese were a welcome supplement to the usual coffee and white bread (occasional croissant) with butter and jam and orange juice that seemed to be the standard everywhere else.

This hotel was in a great location, right near the Duommo and the market. The room was a bit dark and it was difficult to find the check in desk. When we got there the door was closed and locked, make sure to ring the bell beside the door for service. The shared washroom was clean and not too busy although we were there in April. The internet was only really available in the downstairs commonroom. Overall a good hotel for a couple traveling on a tight budget.

Florence hotels are generally poor value for money in comparison to other European cities, but they cannot be beaten on character- this hotel is absolutely full of it. An old palace, with remains of old frescoes everywhere, the biggest rooms we've ever stayed in, a view of the Duomo, a balcony and roof patio... more than we ever expected. Spitting distance to the main shopping and tourist areas, right next to a supermarket too which is very useful for drinks and picnics. Yes the rooms are basic but the staff are helpful and will lend you anything you need like hairdryers, plug converters etc. Highly recommended.

The biggest plus point of the Hotel is the location, 500mts. from all the major tourist sites, so it was really nice to be able to be back to relax incase need be. However, it was extremely noisy at night, the room was street facing and the streets were extremely busy with pedestrians at night ...it seemed like people were talking jst outside the room. Breakfast was mediocre.

Very convenient location near to everything we needed. Staff very friendly and lovely breakfasts. This hotel has a very charming ambience and unique charm and atmosphere, of all the hotels we stayed in April 09 (three) the Bavaria was the least expensive but our favourite. The only downside is the number of stairs to the second floor but that is beyond their control.

Enchanting - I could not believe the charm of my little room and the patch of a fresco on the ceiing. Will definitely come again and have recommended to lots of my friends. Marione restaurant just off Via Tornebuoni has delicious rustic Tuscan food and is full of Italians. Brilliant stay although I'd always recommend going south over the Arno (Oltrarno) to the churches, piazzas and gardens rather the more crowded north of the Arno

We were looking for a cheap week in Italy with the pound at an all-time low against the euro. We've stayed here twice before, and we'll stay again. Location is great, just off the centre of the old city, a great gelateria a stone's throw from the door - don't miss it. About 1km walk from station, fine to wheel suitcases. Breakfast is more than adequate to set one up for the day. Rooms are huge, high ceiling, warm in cold weather. Staff friendly and helpful. Only problem was noise in the street at around 3.00am (English bar down the road throwing out...?) but given that you are on a main artery it was a price worth paying for us. Excellent value for money, we'll come back.

At the price of 31 euros that I paid (in February), I would have classified this as a great bargain if the exchange rate hadn't meant that everything in the Eurozone is expensive for British people at the moment! I may have misread the much higher price on the notice on the back of the door, presumably a maximum rate that they can charge in high season, but if I'm correct it would be rather expensive at that price and I'd have looked for somewhere less central rather than pay it. Although this hotel wouldn't do for those who want elaborate facilities, have difficulty with stairs, or insist on a wide view over the city (I had a view of the courtyard), for anyone else wanting simple but adequate accommodation in a historic building in a very convenient and central location I can, if the price is reasonable, recommend it. You get more breakfast than in other places I stayed, too. One warning to anyone trying to find the place: at street level there is only one small sign, so you have to look very carefully.

Extremely convenient central location. Very impressive building - a former palace which the hotel shares with several other businesses. Be forewarned - you must negotiate serious Renaissance-palace flights of stairs - no elevator. Room very large and extremely quiet. Everything very clean, beds comfortable. Layout of bathroom not very convenient but acceptable. Breakfast was simple but good quality. Corridors and stairs in public areas of the building extremely dark at night - there are light switches but it took us a night or two to locate them - fine after that.

This place was beautiful. It had so much charm. It was central to everything. The hotel manager who checked us in was very welcoming. The rooms are massive. The building is gorgeous. I loved this place. They have a sink in the room, but shared bathrooms which were always kept very clean.

This is a GREAT budget hotel especially for its location! The price was great, the room was clean and spacious, there was a convenient sink in the room and the location is unbeatable - two minutes from the Duomo! There are only two bathrooms with one shower each so I could see it getting a little tight during peak season but I had no problem whatsoever getting in. Would recommend this hotel to anyone!

It is a climb to get get up to the hotel and even futher to the rooms. 75 steeps stairs is too much. We left after one night. Breckfast was the least appealing of any of the hotels we stayed in during our Italy trip.

The room was very spacious and clean, no problems. The only drawback was that you had to walk two flights to get to the actual hotel in a building that is shared by other offices. But I would definitely go back.

Very pleasant visit to accommodation in central Florence. Would have preferred room with bath but not available In terms of value excellent. For the mature visitors an elevator would be a plus - better than 80 steps!!

We loved the building, the beautiful 15th Century Palazzo Ramirez da Montalvo, built by Bartolomeo Ammannati for the Spanish noble Don Antonio Rámirez de Montalvo. The only problem was that the room we got overlooked the street, the Borgo degli Albizzi, and it was terribly noisy during the weakend nights. The next time in Florence we will book again in this hotel but we'll ask for a room overlooking the quiet couryard. The room was spacious, spartan, spotless clean; the bed was very comfortable and we even had linen hand towels. The shared wc was very clean too. No lift in the premises, what is a problem for elderly turists and for those traveling with heavy lugagge. The hotel is at a walking distance of the Duomo, Uffizi, Bargello Museum, Capella medicea, Palazzo Vecchio, Accademia... For a reasonable priced place to eat in an expensive place such as Florence, not far from the hotel, try "Self-Service Leonardo" in the Via de' Pecori 5, located just around the corner from the Duomo: very nice staff. Don't miss the icecreams from Grom, Via del Campanile, close to the hotel. The church in the same street of the hotel, Chiesa di Santa Maria de' Ricci, offers fre concerts, a nice way to end up a day in Florence listening to music by Vivaldi, Bach, Marcello, Händel...

Hotel Bavaria was an excellent place to stay in the heart of Florence. As referenced by others, it is a bit hard to find, but if you know it's only 1 block from the Duomo and turn left and look for the small Hotel Bavaria sign you'll have no troubles! The owner was very helpful in providing us a map of the city and a few great suggestions for restaurants that were as non-touristy as they get in Florence. We highly recommend Casa Lingua by Pitti Palace for dinner, but be prepared to wait! The food and the price were well worth the wait though.

Not expensive. Nice location, close to museums, galleries, churches. If you don"t need something extraordinary good simple hotel to stay, quite, clean.

The warmest welcome I have ever got from an hotel, ever. The manager is a great guy, with excellent English. The hotel is wonderful too, with its centuries-old ambience. Two gripes: the lack of a lift can be a problem - there were 85 (I counted them) steps to our room. With heavy bags, this is not as much fun as it sounds. And while the walls are wonderfully thick, the rooms are linked by connecting doors, blocked by wardrobes. This means that you can hear the neighbours rather too well. Aside from these, and the lack of a detachable shower head, the room was lovely and the location ideal.

Highly recommend. Great location. 10 minute walk from the train station. Walking distance to shops and sightseeing. Clean facilities. Friendly, helpful staff. Good breakfast. The only 'downer' is that there are two flights of steps to get to the hotel. But once we got our bags there we were grateful for the excercise :) Staff were very helpful recommending good restaurants in the area.

I only stayed at the Bavaria for one night; it is my first experience of a shared bathroom, which wasn't as awkward as I might have feared. The room I was in was overlooking a street with late night entertainment which meant things were a bit loud (on a Saturday night). The hotel is in a beautiful Palazzo and the interiors are impressive. No TV in the room and no air conditioning was not a problem this time of year, but a longer stay in the warmer weather would not have been as acceptable, for me.

Hotel Bavaria is in a great location, but that is all. It was a night mare going up so many stairs with a full suitcase and there was no one to help. There was no shampoo or body wash at all. The breakfast was very poor too. I got the room with a shower in it, but it was near the main door and you could hear the bang of the door after each of the other customers, who came back or went out - very noisey.

We had a great stay and the woman at the reception desk was extremely helpful. She even helped us to plan our itinerary as we had only limited amount of time at Florence, and recommended a couple of authentic, nice restaurants which are popular among the locals!

Pros: Great employees. Nice atmosphere. Perfect location in the very heart of the city. Cons: 77 steps above ground with luggage is harsh. Not easily reachable by car to load unload bags. Overall: 8 out of 10

Room was so spacious. Though no air conditioning, the room remained cool during the hot August month. The fresco on the wall was great. Hotel staff were so friendly and helpful.

1. This was a difficult place to find. If walking from the train station as we did, print a decent map before you go as the streets are poorly labelled, with small side alleys that the map from Venere did not show! It took at least 20-30mins of searching. 2. From the outside it looks like an apartment block..with a small buzzer that has "Bavaria" on it, along with many other buzzers. We were not impressed. They need a sign or something because it is not clear in the instructions. You then walk up 4 flights of stairs. 3. There is NO AIR CONDITIONING. Therefore in the peak of summer, the rooms are about 26 degrees at 3am and you have to leave the windows open, which means mosquitoes for africa. We got bitten to shreds on our first night. Also..noisy at night so bring ear plugs. 4. We only had a shower and sink in our room, which was fine but the shared toilet/bathroom often had people waiting to use it. Overall, this hotel is fine if you need to save money, don't have much luggage and are travelling in the cooler months. It is very close to tourist attractions otherwise. Just be prepared for average.

We had a good stay. The stairs are not for the faint hearted. The room was basic but spacious. The breakfast was fantastic. Sometimes was hard to find a bathroom not in use. When trying to find it we walked past the street because it had 2 names the name given is not the first sign you see. Very good location, very close to the duomo.

Stayed two nights then moved to Rome but wish we could have taken the hotel with us! The hotel was amazing. So close to the Duomo and in the lively centre of Florence but the room was so quite. We couldn't hear any noise from the street because the room looked onto a little courtyard. Massive room for the two of us which was really clean. Bathroom great as well. We'd definitely stay here again. Price excellent!

This is a hostel not a hotel so don't expect too much! The photos of the rooms on this site do not resemble the double room we had! Room was stuffy- no a/c and only a small fan. Staff were friendly and the location was great- very near to shops and the duomo.
