The building stands in a place where formerly stood a women's prison, until its closure and demolition, which took place in the 70's. The square itself is still known as Plaza de la Cárcel (Prison Square).
In 1983, the prison was pulled down to build Los Cántaros hotel. The property is named takes its name from the 18th century earthenware jugs found in the old prision subsoil. Nowadays, these jugs are displayed in the Town Museum and some can be found in the hotel's reception area.
The Prison Square is still preserved and one of its fountains, built in 1839, can still be admired.

How to reach Hotel Los Cántaros

By airplane
From Sevilla-San Pablo airport, head towards Sevilla centro for approximately 2 km, where you will see the Cádiz signs. Take the A4 motorway and go on until you have passed two toll booths (the second one is no longer operational). Once you pass the second toll booth, continue on until you see a sign for El Puerto de Santa María, Algeciras, Puerto Real. Take the national road N-IV for a couple of kilometres until the sign for the N-443 road, which will lead you to El Puerto de Santa María.

From the Jerez airport, take the N-IV road towards Cádiz for about 11 km until you arrive at the N-443 road, which you should follow for 6 km until you see the sign for El Puerto de Santa María.

From the Málaga airport, leave the airport in the direction of Torremolinos-Marbella N-340 (E-15), heading towards Algeciras. Once you arrive at Algeciras, stay on the same road heading towards Cádiz. When you arrive at Chiclana-San Fernando, turn off onto the road indicating Puerto Real. Leave Puerto Real on your left and follow the signs to El Puerto de Santa María-Jerez until you arrive at the first turn off to El Puerto, which you should take to arrive at the N-443, that leads you to the town.
