A quirky little hotel that is well situated in the middle of Edinburgh. This hotel is also a private members club. It's somewhat dated and in need of new carpetting/furniture in places, but in a way that also adds to the quirkiness and charm of the place. The room was we had was quite small, but it's all that was needed for our brief stay. Due to it's location it can be a bit noisy at night if you are facing the street. There is an elevator, but don't expect to fit in more than 1 person with a suitcase. The hotel staff were very profressional, courteous, and helpful. The WiFi worked well and was fast. We didn't eat or drink in the hotel so cannot comment on that part. I would stay here again.

This is a very tired establishment, very much in need of refurbishment, although I understand some rooms have been upgraded. The location is good as is the breakfast, the restaurant is reasonably priced and the food is fine. However, rooms with a castle view overlook Princes Street and are very noisy as there is no double glazing nor air conditioning, therefore unless the window is left open even a little, the room becomes very stuffy. The service in the restaurant and at reception was patchy, let down by one individual in each case. The website indicates that bathrobes, cosmetics, radio are supplied in each room. This is untrue, at least in the rooms we were allocated. The only cosmetics supplied were hand and shower wash. The website also states that room service is available, but from memory this consisted of sandwiches only. I booked this hotel as I was looking for a lovely old traditional hotel in Edinburgh, but I was very sadly disappointed. Will never stay here again.

our room was practically in the loft. You went up to the 4th floor then had to climb smaller stairs to a very small room which overlooked a back yard with a noisy ventilation shaft rising from I assume the kitchen on the 2nd floor inches from our window. Radiator did not work, so a portable was supplied. We asked to be moved but was advised no rooms available which I doubted because you never saw many people around or many rooms being cleaned in the mornings. Breakfast very good. Hotel location brilliant. We booked for 3 nights.
