Was staying at Edinburgh for work reasons looking for a cheap clean hotel to stay at the Northumberland hotel was perfect. The interaction with staff wasn't that good waited at reception for about 15 minutes press the bell provided and there still wasn't anything was the exact same when checking out.

I stayed at the Northumberland because it was only £22 and I was on a budget. I know Edinburgh well so only needed a place to sleep, not spend any time in so it suited my purposes. I would have been disappointed if I had paid any more for the room as facilities are very basic. I would advise people not to stay here at Festival time in Edinburgh as prices will shoot up and hotel would not live up to expectation.

Church conference. Its a bed and breakfast and should not be listed with hotels. Its in desperate need of updating. Bathroom facilities were poor. Used cup was left unwashed. Worst of all £7.50 I paid for 2 eggs, (one I couldn't eat because it was not well done as requested), 1 rasher of bacon and 1 sussage. All drenched in oil. Yuk

You get what you pay for... if all you need is a good bed for sleeping and some simple breakfast, this would be just fine. Staff was very friendly and helpfull. We had the family room, it was very simple, but beds were good. We paid 55 £ per night for 3 persons breakfast and wifi included. The breakfast was self-service and offered white/whole toast, butter, 3 kinds of jam, 3 different english cheeses, coffee/tea, milk, fruit yoghurt, 3 kinds of cereals, fruit from a can, fresh green apples. The wifi was not stable and not always good enough for streaming filmclips like the news and the likes, but we did manage to watch some films/series, although with a lot of interruptions. The room was equipped with only 1 bed-lamp for 3 beds, 1 chair and had nowhere to hang your wet jackets to dry (it rained almost every day) Heating did not work the first day, but from day two on there was heating from around 6 in the evening for some reason... There was a thin, blinded door between our room and the room next to us, so that it was very noisy. The bed was made every day and tea/instant coffee in the room was filled up. The location of the hotel was great, the neigbourhood seemed just fine. Several busses were available just outside the hotel for the 2-mile stretch into the city. £ 3.50 for a day ticket and you can ride the bus all day, a great way to see the town and suburban areas also, especially if you choose the double-deckers. Some things we did: - Edinburgh Castle: great view and of much interest, The War Museum is also located here. Recommended. - Loch Lomond: we took a 1½-2 hours drive with our rented car to Loch Lomond located north of Glasgow and did some stops around the lake. The we crossed the Trossachs on our way home. Beautiful scenery and well worth the drive. - Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh: free entrance, except for the glasshouses. If interested in plants or you want a quiet walk/picnic this is a great place. Located just outsid

Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and comfortable but the ensuite looked as if it needs an overhaul. We booked the hotel at late notice and it was the cheapest available but I still thought it was pricey (maybe Edinburgh is because of the Fringe Festival). I was able to get a room for less than half the price in Glasgow. It was convenient for travelling into the city with a bus stop only 30 seconds away.

Friendly, but undercapitalized. A number of minor repairs needed in the room.
