Our room was basic but very clean. We felt it may have been better as a single room but as we were only staying one night it met our needs. We knew the room was below street level so that didn't come as a surprise. Have stayed in better rooms for less but as the festival was in full swing the price was ok.staff very helpful. We would use the hotel again but maybe pay for a larger room.

Very clean room & helpful, pleasant staff. Decoration a bit tired, but I believe that the hotel is due to be refurbished quite soon. A lovely, spacious Edinburgh town house, retaining its original features. This may well be why there is no lift, so this might not be the place if you have problems with stairs. Otherwise, it is certainly to be recommended.

First time that we have stayed here but was very enjoyable. Edinburgh is a great city and the hotel was well located to make the most of it. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fine an free wifi wa a bonusd very good value considering that it was in with the room price.

Except for the size of the room which was rather small for two adults( It's more of a single room) all other things were excellent especially cleanliness, location and staff hospitality. We would use this hotel again in the future and we will recommend it to others. The availability of a lift would certainly help to upgrade it further although we didn't need it in our case.

Very quiet but central location. Ideal if you need to combine a show at The Playhouse with an overnight stay. Hotel was fine but some chipped paintwork took away from an otherwise attractive hotel. NB: There is no lift and we had a room on the top floor. No use if you weren't fit.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. From the outset the staff were very welcoming and accommodating. The room we were given was huge and very clean. The location is excellent, in a private and quiet area but only 10 minutes walk from the city centre. One of the reasons we booked the hotel was because it provided a cooked breakfast. On one of our days we couldn't have this because the cooker had broken, so breakfast that morning was a little sparse. Although this couldn't be helped we felt there should have been a contingency plan in place. For this reason only we haven't given the hotel a perfect rating. We do however want to mention the staff, who were so professional. On the one occasion we were having breakfast we commented on the attention given to a family. The staff were bending over backwards to accommodate the childrens requirements. It was exceptional service. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. A very nice hotel and one we would return to again.

The service at the hotel was excellent, friendly and helpful. I had a single room (plus private bathroom) which compared to other places I've stayed was a decent size and had a double bed. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because my room was on the 3rd floor (4th for USA visitors)and it didn't have a lift. I am a pensioner and not the fittest person so had I known in advance that there would be 70 stairs to climb then I would not have booked it. Very convenient for amenities and good views from the hotel it also backs on to Calton Hill. I would only return to this hotel if I could have a ground or first floor room but will certainly recommend it to younger, fitter friends!

In a splendid terrace on an elevated quiet road but fairly central being only a few minutes walk from the restaurants, shops etc. of the New Town and to excellent views across the city from Calton Hill park. It is only 12 minutes walk from Waverley station and the pleasant receptionist let me check in to my room at 11:45 am. My sigle room was up a few steps and was clean, cozy and warm with a nice view of the garden and both the TV in the room and shower in the en suite worked well. The breakfast was good too and efficiently served.

This is a lovely hotel in a perfect location, on a quiet street, yet 10 minutes walk from Waverley Station. All the staff were brilliant, and so efficient and polite. The breakfast experience was spot-on, it was served up really quickly and nicely cooked. Our room was on the first floor and at the back overlooking lovely gardens. It was a family room which was massive for just the two of us, it was really quiet at all times, and we got a full wifi signal all the time. What's not to like? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The Ailsa Craig is in a great location. Parking was available, on the street parallel for 4 pounds for the entire day. All heritage sites are within walkable distances for able people (many no more than .9 kilometre). The breakfast was served by very friendly staff and included tinned fruits and cereals and the traditional full Scottish with choice of eggs. We only stayed for two nights and wished it could have been longer.

Great place -old school quality, very nice setting at Royal Terrace, fine breakfast, bedding could do with a bit of upgrading, but over all a fine place to stay, when you require good old style at a fine location in town. This place is dearly recommmended.

My stay was wonderful apart from 2 things that really bothered me. 1) For me whether a hotel has wifi or not is crucial.... I was told there was wifi and indeed there was, however the quality was terrible, horrificly slow and kept cutting me off. My partner couldn't even connect and the hotel could not help. They did not have a spare ethernet cable or a general use laptop. Instead we moved to the neighbouring hotel, the royal terrace where my partner connected with no problem. 2) 2 of the nights we brought pints up to the room and the following day pint glasses were still there after the cleaner had been and gone.

It's in an excellent position, just few minutes walk from Princes Street and few SECONDS walk from the amazing Calton Hill park. The building is simply stunning (look at the glass roof above the stairs!)and the rooms are neat and comfortable. We didn't have breakfast but the smell was really delicious. And last but not least, the staff was very kind, friendly and competent. Surely, next time in Edinburgh, we'll choose it again!

Hotel Ailsa Craig was just right for my needs as I passed through Edinburgh on my way to Stirling. The room was clean, I had a double rather than a single bed which was a bonus.
