Hotel Reviews Gresham Metropole
United Kingdom, Jan 2009
Unfortunately my stay at the gresham was ruined by several things. despite being told i had been upgraded to an executive room, it was an old room, poorly decorated. not one of the newly refurbished rooms that they advertise. on my last night i had to move rooms as the noise of an in-house disco was unbearable. on complaining i was told there was nothing they can do, then they finally offered another room but the person who came to show us the new room was laughing at how funny it was - not a way to placate the guest. the room where we were moved to was cold, damp and had drafts coming in from the windows. in the rooms there was no safe or no mini-bar.

Gresham Metropole is a very good hotel : the rooms are comfortable and spacious and the staff nice. The breakfast is not that various and we have to walk from place to place to access the two buffets. Anyway my stay was really pleasant at the metropole.
Family with young children
United Kingdom, Jul 2008
We (including 5 monnth old baby) arrived in early evening after a day of travelling to prebooked room with cot. Room smallish with internal window. No other room offered. We were tired and keen to get some sleep before next full day of travelling. We not told that the room would be noisy because of wedding party some floors below and that the sound would be transmitted loudly and dirctly to our room. Our baby woke at around 10pm and we spent much of the next 2-3 hours trying to get her back to sleep so we could catch up on sleep ourselves. We rang the reception 3 times and they eventually stopped the party when it went on beyond what we were told would be a 12.15 stop toward 1.45am. From the start we were not told about the party or theat the room would be particularly noisy hence denied opportunity for a good early night sleep. The apologies made at reception desk afterward saying the party overran does totally miss the point. I am sure if we were given a quiet room from the outset then the party may have run as long as it wanted, rather than having been stopped as a reaction to our requests to change room later in the night. It may be that most people staying there on a friday evening go clubbing until the early hours but inn our casse the aim was to stay somewhere reasonably posh to get a good early night sleep. This didnt happen. The lack of consideration and the failure of the manager responsible to get back in touch as promised the following Monday were very disappointing...Interesting mixture of Georgian and conventional wedding disco music... Oh I forgot to mention that the lifts were out of order and it seems that many people including ourselves were having difficulty negotiating the many flights of stairs (in our case with baby babystuff and bags) the statment on the lifts saying they were out of order "due to circumstances beyond our control" was plainly wrong and lazy. Overall we did not get value.

If you stay in this hotel do not allow them to put you in room 210.The best you can say about that room is that it should be used as a store room. The view from the window is the lift shaft wall about 2 ft(600mm) away. The only way to see the sky is to put your head out of the window. We complained and were moved to a nice room on the 4th floor with a view of the river and Cork. The hotel surroundings are not very nice but it was convenient for walking to the city centre.Breakfast good and swimming pool also nice.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, leisure centre was reasonably well-equipped though the equipment seemed a bit out-dated. Food traditional and a bit bland but good quality. Without venere.com we would not have managed to stay at the hotel as they refused to take a one night booking over the phone(because it was Boxing Day) but they accepted the venere.com booking without any questions.
How to reach Hotel Gresham Metropole
By car
From Cork Airport (N27): on exiting Cork Airport you will approach a roundabout, on the main Cork to Kinsale road (N27). Take the first exit off this roundabout towards Cork City. Go straight down the hill, passing through the two sets of traffic lights, until you reach the large roundabout at the bottom of the hill. Take the third exit off the roundabout, to the City Centre (N27). Continue straight on through four sets of traffic lights. You should now be on the second lane on the left, and be turning left at the next junction (after the Elysian Building - 18 storey building on your right). Passed this building, you need to turn right at the next junction, as to cross the river. Continue straight on now, until you come to a T-junction, where you need to turn left. You should see the Gresham Metropole Hotel on the opposite river bank. At the next set of traffic lights, turn right to cross the river, go straight through the next junction, and then turn right at the following set. You are now on MacCurtain Street, the Gresham Metropole Hotel is situated 200 mètres ahead on the right-hand side.
From Dublin (N8): from the Dunkettle roundabout (next to Jack Lynch Tunnel) follow the signs for Cork City Centre (do not go under the tunnel). Continue straight on, you will come at the road along the River Lee, do not cross the river at any point. Keep going straight on, and you will come to the rear of the Gresham Metropole Hotel (large yellow painted building from rear), once you have past the hotel, turn right at the next set of traffic lights. Followed immediately by another right turn at the next set of traffic lights. You are now on MacCurtain Street, the Gresham Metropole Hotel is situated 200 metres ahead on the right hand side, and you will find a set-down area outside for your convenience.
