Very good breakfast. Well presented with a personal touch. Very friendly staff. TV did not work, but inconvenience was compensated by generally good atmosphere and overall impression, and cheap price.

As I stayed at Hotel Merian two times, I can compare two rooms in it. Actually, one room was located on the 4th floor and another one was on the 1st floor. The difference was in quality of water facilities. On the last floor water pressure was very low and you could not take proper shower. Besides it was frezing cold in the room but the heating was off. The other room was all right and I would recommend the hotel to my friends

The only negative thing about the hotel is the surroundings - a building site, but that will eventually disappear. The hotel is very pleasant. Double glazed windows reduced the noise from the busy street to almost nothing, the breakfast was fantastic, and the room nice. For the price, this was a very good hotel.

5 minutes walk to the station and the center. Merian hotel is excellent for traveling by train. Breakfast is excellent. Although near the station, there was no noise of the trains in the room.

I chose this hotel as being convenient for a 13 hour stop in Koln en route eastwards by train and it fitted the bill well. It is located 5 minutes from then main station;(a pity about the ongoing roadworks)and about 10 minutes to the Dom and river. The staff were welcoming, I had a good size single room an a plentiful breakfast. The hotel was good value and I would recommend it.I would return there if in Koln.

Ottimo per pochi giorni e nei week end quando i rumori della ferrovia e dell'autostrada sono minori. Non c'è climatizzatore.

Well, there is not much to say about this hotel. My stay was simply awesome. The rooms were very clean and spacious and the staff was also very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was definitely one of the best I've seen in Europe. The location is fine, since it is at 5 min walk from the main station and less than 10 min from the cathedral. Finally, wi-fi access is available in the rooms for 2.5 euros for the entire stay!

Excellent quality/price ratio. Pay-WiFi available in all rooms on a cheap per-stay basis. Mini-bar, hair dryer, etc. Good location (close to main train station, subway and Cathedral) although on the back side of the station and close to a highway. When I stayed there (03/2009) there were lots of civil engineering works for a tramway/subway line (?) that made the surroundings a bit disappointing. Otherwise a very good hotel with reasonable prices.

My low rating relating to the quietness of rooms is explained by the hotel location close to the railway (on one part it is an advantage, on other part it is an inconvenient).

A good hotel, the only drawback being traffic and railway noise. This is acceptable with the window closed but not when open. We were aware of the problem from reading previous reviews and judged the convenient location (5 minutes' walk from the railway station) and the competitive room rate as more important. We would be happy to stay there again. Excellent breakfasts and pleasant, helpful staff.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was only one real problem. The hotel is located very close to the railway station and you should keep the windows closed, especially at night, because it is very noisy outside. But there was no air-condition or effective ventilation in the room, so it was very hot to sleep.

The perfect hotel if you are travelling by train and just want a good standard hotel. The staff was VERY nice and very helpful. I got in with the train at 6 in the morning and my room wasn't ready, but they let me shower in the downstairs bathroom so that I ready to go out in the city. They offered me free coffee because my room wasn't vacant eventhough it was me who turned up way to early. I had a single. It was a very good size for a single-room. Of course it was quite standard rooms and the hotel itself wasn't anything special but for the price it was good. But be aware that there are smoking and nonsmoking rooms. I was given a smoking because I had forgotten to ask for a non-smoking, and it didn't smell good - off course... The breakfast was nice. You didn't have to go out hungry. A good little buffet. All in all, a great hotel at the price and I would stay there again.

Hotel is in transition...on to the upside. New owners have good plans and an excellent attitude. Breakfast is best I have ever had in Europe and front desk and breakfast staff aim to please and are very pleasant. Room was comfortable and bathroom was adequate. Towels were very European and not too clean, bring your own. Hotel is very close to main station in Cologne and a busy highway so you are going to get noise...but the convenience of the location more than makes up for it..although I am unsure how this will work in summer as there is no A/C in rooms so windows would have to be open. On the whole, this was an excellent value for the money and I would not hesitate to stay here again any time except the hot months.

On the whole, the only negative note about this hotel is the noise from the trains of the near rail station, wich is more effective than an alarm clock for awakening...

Good location near train station and easy to get to town. Although next to train station room was very quiet when windows were closed (not sure if this would be a problem in summer?). Only thing was we asked for a non-smoking room and room smelt of smoke. Great breakfast and very helpful staff.

The room was great and the staff were really lovely. The only problem is that there was no air-conditioning in the room so it was hot but the traffic was very noisy if we opened the windows to cool down. If they put air-conditioning in the rooms, this place would be perfect.

This was a fine Cologne hotel. Compared to the Tempelhof hotel, which we stayed at earlier in Cologne earlier in our trip, the Merian was a world apart. And the price was about the same. Located near the main train station and at a busy intersection, the room was surprisingly quiet. Nearby road construction made walking to the hotel from the station a wee bit longer, but that was a minimal and temporary inconvenience. There was a good buffet breakfast included in the price.

The only thing that wasn't good was the lack of air conditioning. As we went mid summer this was a real pain. We had to put the fan on through the night to keep cool. But other than that, good location and friendly staff made this a good hotel. Unfortunately the mini fridge wasn't working as this would have been good to store food in during the hot summer. Breakfast was very good.

Hotel is within 1 block of train station. Room was large & clean & staff was very friendly & helpful upon our arrival. Room overlooker road but was surprisingly quiet. Breakfast was very good with large selection of fresh items served in a very bright, clean cafe on premises. Would definitely stay here again.

Overall, our stay was a pleasant one. The webpage portrayed the site accuratley. I would recommend this site becasue it is a good "woking hotel" meaning that it is convenient in many ways. It is an eight minute walk to the main train station in Cologne. The breakfasts were more than adquate. The staff was extremely friendly and accomodating: they secured a fan for us when the weather became hot. This hotel had no air conditioning, so keeping the window open was a bit noisy given its central city location. There is no place to park a car. 10 euros/night would have secured a spot for the car, so we opted to return the rental two days early (with the excellant mass transportation available, the car was no longer necessary). Personnaly, the next visit to Cologne is going to be on a quieter street.
