Hôtel de France - Chinon

The hotel was in a great spot for wandering around Chinon and walking home from the many places to eat.Staff friendly, good breakfast.

Very nice, charming hotel, well located. Interesting property in the heart of Chinon. We travelled in peak time, so price was a bit higher than normal time, but it was OK. We would recommend. Nice welcome.

We had a lovely meal at the restaurant at the corner of the main street and the street that the hotel was on called the Place de France or similar. Very good food and service. Breakfast at the hotel was great with a wide range of items to choose from at the buffet.

Location in downtown Chinon was excellent, but noise from the Square dining area below our room was quite loud & late into the night. Ask for a room off the Square. We enjoyed the farmers market on Sat & Sun mornings. There was no elevator; the stairs could be difficult for some travelers.

Strenghts: Nice hotel in a french style and the position is very good in the Chinon centre and 10 min to the castle. Good food for lunch and dinner with similar prices as Paris. Weaknesses : no lift and no luggage service, the reception service are very poor.

The greeting when we got there was pretty minimal... just handed the keys and pointed up the stairs

Arrived Chinon in midst of Fiesta and hotel is overlooking the main square; absolutely delightful. Ate in the hotel and enjoyed that too. Overall a terrific hotel and one we would definiately go back to.

Excellent location, really professional staff. Room just a little on the small side.

Overpriced. Room situation poor (No.27).Difficult access and poor outlook (staff smoking outside window, within a few feet). 'Superior' room largely meant bath instead of shower, which should be standard in this hotel category. We discovered that there were cheaper rooms that were more accessible with better outlook. Parking facilities, although charged for, very cramped, and almost hazardous.

Room was small and cramped for the money, but there was a lovely view of the castle, and the square below. Parking was tricky. No elevator, and difficult stairs to negotiate. BUt it was very convenient, though the sign was difficult to locate...we went around the square three times before we spotted it.

If you get a room facing the square, you'll need to close the windows at night, particularly the night they pick up garbage (3 am!). Request a fan from the front desk. Just a lovely town for walking around.

We stayed here 2 days and loved it. It was a basecamp to visit the castles. We did not expect the Farmers market in the city square and the lovely people who lived and ate at the tables in the square below our room. The childrens happy voices were a real treat. There was a great flea market along the river banks that was really fun. The Fortress at Chinon was very interesting and so was the medieval city that had a fine walking tour. It was interesting to see how the motorcycle people made it through the narrow streets without killing themselves. The only think I would have liked, was a computer with free access to email family at home. They said there was a library we could use, but it was never open when we were at the hotel. The room was small but nice and comfortable. All the hotels seem to be small in France as compared to the USA. But it was fine by us!
