Hotel Fortaleza Do Guincho - Cascais

My overall stay was very pleasant. The food was absolutely top notch and so was the wine and service. Exceptional. I would add a welcome drink of port for arriving guests or a non-alcholic alternative. While quaint, for the price, I did find the rooms small, and in need of some renovation. While not very obvious by any means, nevertheless, for a 5 star, I would not expect to see a slightly chipped soap dish on the bathroom sink or minor beginnings of mildew in the bathroom, which needed maintenance caulking. I am paying the price for the sea view, but since I paid for a sea view, I was not entirely happy that part of the sea view included more of the hotel building that I would have wanted. Also, there is a barrier of a small veranda between the bed and the ocean view window. I would have prefered to have nothing blocking the area between bed and window outlooking the sea. Finally, while a jacuzzi tub is nice, a child sized one isn't useful. It would be better to take out such a thing and create a new stone shower with the same color of the ceiling. Also, the organdy sheers and old lamps made the room dark and musty. I'd replace them with beige or celedon sheers to match the lovely wallpaper, with a more ornate tie back, and I'd knock out the wall between the bed area and window with the ocean view. Staff was very responsive to anything I needed, but with so many other hotels in the area that could offer a similar sea view and have also a pool and direct view of the sea from the room, I'd go elsewhere before returning here during the summer. However, during the winter, with the many fireplaces, if one enjoys a winter sea and being cozy, I'd return to the hotel. But bathrooms are in need to renovation with modern easy to access stone showers. Even I, who am 5 foot 6, wished there had been a stepping stool to get in and out of the shower.

the rooms could use more light by the bed so we could read....it seemed a bit too dark also there needed to be a light switch on both sides of the bed. The chocolate deserts (4) were the best we have ever eaten and the presentation was outstanding!!!!

Wonderful, amazing absolutely gorgous setting and interiors. Could be a room in the Tsar's palace. Fabulous restaurant as well. Perched on the coast with wonderful ocean views. Our favorite hotel of our 5 hotel trip.

This is an amazing hotel in a converted fort on the Atlantic Ocean from the 1400's. It is in Cascais about 30 minutes outside of Lisbon. It is perfect for a romantic holiday trip with gourmet restaurant and attentive staff.

An amazing place with one of the best retaurant in Portugal. Very competent and welcoming staff. The location is really outstanding right on the beach. Families with samll children though should be aware there is no swimming pool and that the praia de Guincho can be quite dangerous due to waves and current (nice to watch though!)
