The service was excellent, very welcoming even escorted me to my room, obliging and helpful. I stayed in a single room which had a television, dresser, bathroom. Perhaps one thing I would have liked to have had were hot drink making facilities, ie a jug, cups and spoons. It was very clean and was recleaned every day that I was there.

The staff, actually the owners, Helene and her husband, were very welcoming, gracious and helpful. Helene assisted us in booking the D-Day Beaches tour through the Peace museum. The hotel is ideally situated close to bus lines, though we actually walked from the train station. Close to the chateau, and dining or shopping. Our stay in Caen was a high point of our trip thanks in no small part to the Hotel de la Fountaine.

Good location if you want to be downtown close to shops, bars and restaurants. All were within walking distance. Very friendly, helpful staff who spoke English. Rooms are basic, good value for money and very clean. We stayed for 3 days at the start of our vacation, and decided to return for two days at the end of our trip and were lucky to get the last room available. Will definately return.

Excellent location and the owners/hosts were very friendly and helpful. Lots of good eats and sites near by. Beware of trying to get out of the local garage on a Sunday morning; you have to do some searching for a way in, and it was a challenge.

Hotel is in a good location within a few minutes walking distance of the Chateaux. There is also a movie theater, several shopping stores (ie Benneton,Naf Naf,Pimke, etc), and a Monoprix grocery. Several restaurants are within short walking distance. We did not walk to the hotel from the train station but the taxi was about 7 to 9 euros depending upon the day of the week. Room was very clean and furnished appropriately. The staff was very helpful and attentive. Breakfast was fresh breads, coffee, orange juice and yogurt (good value for 5.50 euro). We would stay here again.

We were there in Aug 08. Great stay! The best part was the hotel staff. For a two star hotel, they were very welcoming and quickly gave us the rundown on where we should go for dinner that evening with a map. For the price, the room could not be beat. The bed was very comfortable. The location was also very good as it was in the heart of the city. We could easily walk where we needed to. Thanks for a nice stay!!

I was made to feel welcome and valued. That, to me, is very important. I would return if I could and would recomment it to others. The only drawback was that there seemed to be a lot of transport noise from the street in the early morning. Even so, I would return.

Philippe and Hélène are a young couple who are enthusiastic in their desire to provide a pleasant stay. If memory serves me, rooms were spotless, and washroom/shower was modern and relatively (for France) spacious). The WIFI access was very welcome. They have a lovely little breakfast room, whose windows overlook the street. Well located, with interesting shops and restaurants in the immediate area.

Overall a very good hotel. Price was reasonable. We were tourists so we didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel. It was in a great location, very close to the sights of Caen. Parking on the street was possible, so that wasn't a problem. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it.

Three of us stopped there for 4 nights in May 2008 to use as a base for exploring the D-Day landing sights and museums. Excellent location for all these and also for a bit of dining and drinking in the evening. Rooms a little small but adequate for my purpose (ie sleeping), very clean, very quiet and free wi-fi too! Caen itself is a lovely city, small enough to cover on foot, but large enough to offer a good variety of attractions (ie shops, bars, restaurants, historical buildings). I would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly as excellent value and comfort... shame the £ was weak against the euro, made the stay quite a bit dearer than last time I was in France.

The room was very clean and evidently refurbished recently. Nice colouring. Ideal situation near the very centre of Caën. Easy access to hotel by bus from railway station (we went to the theatre stop. Easy also to access the Memorial by bus and other parts of the city by bus or tram. There is no elevator but the man in the reception was kind to help with baggage. Breakfast is not included in the price and it is only juice, bread, croissant and jam. I guess this is like many other hotel breakfasts in France but in my point of view it could be richer - add yoghurt, cheese and ham and some fruit for instance.

Hotel de la Fontaine was a great value! Stayed for one night in March 2008 but would haved gladly stayed several more. The room was well-sized and the bathroom was clean and well kept. The bed was quite comfortable also. The best part of the hotel was the staff who helped us carry our rather large bags up to our room and were very knowledgeable about the area. The man who was behind the desk the night of March 6, 2008 was very helpful, giving us right off the bat a map of Caen and the location of the good restaurants nearby. When we asked, he directed us to the nearby Monoprix, (grocery store,) and knew its hours. The front desk also had schedules for the Bus Verts des Calvados, which we planned on taking the next day to see the Juno D-Day Beach and the staff directed us to the office where we needed to go to buy the tickets. The staff allowed us to leave our bags at the hotel until late that evening when we were due to catch the train to Rennes and were *always* very friendly. They asked us if we could settle our bill the night we checked in, which I agreed to, but when I forgot, they didn't seem to mind and I paid the next morning upon check-out. The only negative of the hotel was the directions from the train station on the confirmation e-mail which said only "1 KM from train station". I thought I could remember how to get there by glancing at a map a week before our arrival, but I was wrong and we got lost. Luckily though, a nice couple saw that we were lost and offered to drive us and our big bags to the hotel, (only a few blocks away, but in the opposite direction we were heading,) in their van. To have made our stay close to perfection, all they would need to do is give one or two more lines of specific directions to the hotel from the train station. Overall a fantastic stay! Our cheapest night in France, but easily one of the best!

Perhaps the best way to describe the De la Fontaine is that it put the "no" in "no frills". This is two star that earns its rating. You get what you pay for here. A big plus was that our rooms were ready even though we arrived off the Portsmouth ferry at 9 am. We were travelling with two small boys and therefore, rented two adjoining double rooms. The rooms were extremely small, but as we were only staying for two nights this wasn't a real problem. However, had our stay been longer the lack of even a chair to sit in would have been problematic. The en suite bathrooms were clean and functional. The hotel is in central Caen and it is a short walk to sights and restaurants, but it is a walk. The streets around the hotel were a bit deserted in the mornings and the evenings, making it a little disconcerting walking to dinner. On the upside, this made parking on the street very easy and there was also a fairly inexpensive underground car park around the corner from the hotel. Breakfast was truly continental, baguettes and croisannts, coffee or tea, OJ for the kids. No cereal, fruit or meat. euro 5.50 and the kids ate for half price. Although we liked Caen, if we stayed in Normandy again I think we would choose Bayeux. Closer to the D-Day beaches and a more picturesque town. However, Caen does have the advantage of extreme central location and it is a real city, with shopping. As I said, wouldn't want to stay at the de la Fontaine for a week, but it was fine for a sightseeing base of operations for a quick break. Plus, the price was right.

Hello We chose this hotel as a base to visit the D Day beaches. The hotel staff is easily able to direct you to the right bus stop within close walking distance. No bus on Sunday..... There is a great Iranian restaurant, maybe six tables one street over. No elevator here. Very nice young man on staff. Nice bed and very clean.. You WILL need your map to find this hotel. It's on a short street and you see the sign from the corner. Easy walking distance to the sights to see. Great dinners across the stree from the castle. First and second restaurant are the same chef. Excellent food. Try the Eggplant. Mike

This hotel was exactly as advertised, a little small, but clean, quiet, and excellent customer service. Other than the shower being small, we have no complaints about the room. Large french windows that open to a side-street helped create a nice atmosphere in the room.We had a little difficulty finding the hotel, but it did have a great location in the center of town within walking distance to many restaurants. The gentleman who worked the reception desk and provided breakfast was very attentive and helpful.

This was our second stay at this hotel and we found it excellent value for money. The rooms are basic but have a TV, shower and toilet. The hotel is very clean and non smoking. The hotel has no lifts. The location is excellent for the centre of Caen and parking is available nearby in the underground carpark. The hotel provides a good continental breakfast for 5 euros. Restaurants for other meals are available within walking distance. The hotel is very welcoming and the staff exceedingly helpfull.

We were lost driving to the hotel, so we arrived a few minutes after the closing time. Although we tried to apologize to the manager he just began by yelling at us about how it was past closing time. This was great value and a very good hotel. The rooms were spotless and the hotel was well maintained with fresh paint and wallpaper and fresh carpet. The decor was very bright and modern. I liked the way they angled the bathroom into the room. The rooms were small but as a single person, I found it was quite acceptable. The lighting and heating were good but the toilet made annoying sounds when flushed- my only complaint. On the negative: It was quite disturbing to see all of the graffiti everywhere, made us nervous about parking our car on the street. We very much enjoyed our stay at this quaint hotel. The hosts were very kind and helpful. The breakfast was good. We stayed in several hotels in France and in many ways this was our favorite. I think it was mostly due to the welcome that we felt there. We stayed in two rooms (two couples). The one with the bath was quite adequate for our needs. The location is a typical urban vertical-style hotel, in a back oneway street in the centre of Caen (tram+shopping area 2mins). My main criteria for an hotel are cleanliness and quietness: these were amply met. The room I had was the only one in the hotel with a bath and was just about big enough for a double bed: so if you do not want items around in bigger hotels, this is acceptable. Breakfast is the french standard bread+croissant+juice and was what I expected. Tne hotel seems to be run by a youngish couple who were very friendly - but english communication was slow at times. Plumbing problems were efficiently fixed. Stairs may be a problem for mobility impared customers. In view of the price of this hotel, its cleanliness and its quiet location, I would recommend it.

Although the rooms were clean they were small and the bathroom shower area left a lot for improvement. Also we appear to have paid more than the qoted price, though the difference wasnt too much it was annoying. There should have been indication that the rooms were on the second floor and a lift was not avilable and this was not suitable for an 89 year old. We managed and had an enjoyable time. It was somewhere to lay our heads.

The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and had North American style pillows (even though in the pictures it appears to be the long European style). The room had a small refridgerator in it which was unexpected in a two star hotel. Breakfast was the standard: croissant, baguette, juice and coffee. The meal was served quickly and had a very reasonable price. There is a large public car park nearby which I would recommend that you use if you have a car. There is also an Internet cafe and a grocery store within a 2-3 minute walk. The closest laundrymat is only a few blocks away. I would definitely stay here again.
