Hotel Astoria - Bordighera

Fascinating hotel built in the late 1960s, rooms with balconies lovely, gorgeous views of palm trees and sea beyond. Bathroom green tiling ! with somewhat mouldy windows. Public areas a bit dark, however the waiters at breakfast were attentive and multilingual, young man on reception had a sense of humour. Nice gardens and 10 min walk down a gentle hill to promenade. Bordighera is lovely with old town full of great restaurants.

I got a very good rate through Venere and my travel plans were so fraught with problems, I stayed longer in the hotel and the rate went up to the regular rate for the extra days I was there. It's hard for me to consider whether this was a good deal or not, for the dollar was so weak that everything was extremely expensive. This is a very old fashion hotel (reminds of the 50's with a Victorian touch)with friendly staff, beautiful grounds and a 10 minute walk to the sea. My single room was tiny with a balcony and great view. I saw some double rooms and for an European hotel were good size. The staff at the resturant were wonderful, food only so-so and again at the current exchange rate very expensive - $32-40 for dinner for one. I took my dog with me and he was very welcomed in the hotel and they let me take him into the dining room in his carrier. Bordighera is a beautiful small city, resort for the French and Italians, I think I was the only American in town.
