Charming! Friendly and helpful staff, beautiful surroundings, quiet location, and interesting drive. Hiking at Alpe-di-Suisi was wonderful!

great owner operated hotel that made you feel at home. Restaurant was very good for dinner. Views from the hotel were spectacular!

We had a fantastic stay at Hotel Kohlern. It says it is three star probably because of no TV or drinks facilities in the rooms but there is so much to do either immediately outside the door or a short drive away you will spend little time in it. The welcome, service and food are all four star. Highly recommended

We would definitely stay here again. The hotel staff were very warm and welcoming. The food was very good both at both breakfast and dinner. We really appreciated the option of dinner since the hotel is so far away from anywhere else! Very quite and peaceful. Not a hotel for anyone who wants a wild night life.

They were very understanding and accommodating to the needs of our 10 month baby and specially to our sharpei dog, whom they welcomed. The pool is beautiful and I recommend it as a place to relax after visiting Bolzano. However as it is a place to relax for most of its guest it may not be appropriate for small children.

Great hotel and a wonderful location. Loved the views from our room and balcony especially. Very good value for money too.

Hotel-staff is almost unbelievably friendly and service-oriented. We have been in hotels on various continents and in anything from major cities to quiet, out-of-the-way places, but we have never before experienced such a natural and easy-going dedication to cater to our every need.

This is a boutique hotel. The star-rating does not quite do it justice. The hotel is located on a piece of heaven on earth (high up in the Dolomites, but not quite so far out to be cut off from civilization). The hotel is apparently run by people who love what they do, and take this business very seriously. It feels like you have the whole place for yourself; all alone in peace and quiet; and just when you need something, someone shows up to get it done for you. You should definitely sample the wine and food in their restaurant. The food is bordering on excellence; yet the price is very reasonable (~80 euros for two people including a very nice bottle of local wine and desert).

Exceptional service and professionalism. Slight problem finding the turnoff from the S22. Best to go to city centre, park car, get your bearings and local map then proceed.

Fantastic location, although a nightmare to find. Better maps needed, please. Good walking, and Austrian feel to this Italian mountain region. Great food, good service, fantastic infinity pool with breathtaking views. Watch out for the naked German's in the sauna!

The hotel was lovely, but very remote from the city of Bolzano. You must have a car, and you need to plan on about a half hour trip down a very windy road to get to the city. The drive is beautiful, through vineyards and trees, especially wonderful in the fall when the leaves have changed, but it gets tiresome. The restaurant at the hotel was good. I would not return simply because of the distance from town.

Hotel ownership/staff were very helpful and caring, Joseph, the manager speaks English and is very competent. Rooms were very clean and quiet. Setting is lovely.Italian chief made excellent pasta dishes; hot and cold breakfast. Tram to Bolzano eliminates driving to the city, which is charming. Stayed two nights and regretted not staying longer.

This was a wonderful stopover for us on our way to Venice. We wished we had planned an extra day there. The Colle-Kohlern Hotel was a highlight of our trip. The setting is fantastic, sitting very high above the valley floor, looking out across the Italian Alps. The food in the restaurant was equally fabulous. One comment worth noting is that the hotel is some 9 kilometers up a very narrow, switch-back road from the valley floor. We had a car and are very comfortable driving, so it was fine (although a couple of times we did wonder if we were on the right road, had gone too far, etc.) The turn-off to start up the mountain from the road along the river isn't extremely well marked either. Even with some decent Google maps in hand, we had to ask for help at a gas station. Still, Colle-Kohlern is on a small sign as you go around the round-about, and then you can settle in for a exciting, breathtaking drive up the side of the mountain. If this suits you (or you have a taxi take you from Bolzano), you will be very glad you stayed here. Stay a day or two and take some hikes around the alps, or just enjoy the view and the excellent cuisine.

This inn offers an authentic experience of Northern Italy with a strong German influence. The cable car is a convenient mode of transportation to the city of Bolzano. The half board option is the way to go.

Nous y reviendrons / A very good place to stay.

The location and staff were both excellent. Our only problem was the road up the hill; 9 km of narrow, winding road is not fun.

Our only difficulty was finding the place. A star on a map depicting where the hotel actually is geographically and in relation to other reference points would have saved us a trip up the wrong road. Directions are not enough as Bolzano, Italy can be quite confusing. The hotel and the employess were impressively first rate. The food was excellent. The view tremendous. Altogether perfect! You can use this last part in an anonymous reference.

Lovely location 9km along a snakey road up in the mountains above Bolzano. Room was spacious and welcoming with a good sized balcony with seating outside. Air con not really required as it is colder up there! Staff friendly despite us not knowing whether to speak italian or german (both badly!) Ate at the hotel in the evening and had delightful food and service. Would stay there again!

FANTASTICH!FANTASTIC!! Highly recommended. This is a very charming B&B located in a quiet village. Great hiking trails everywhere, good starting point for drives into the Dolomites. The view of Bolzano and the Alps/Dolomites is spectacular. The room was very quaint, comfortable with a nice bathroom. The innkeeper was very accomodating and a very gracious host. The food was superb, best Weiner Schnitzel I ever had! Prices were average with the rest of the restaurants in the area. Although it was a pain sometimes to go up and down an 8 km winding road, it was well worth it and a challenge! Besides, you can pick the freebie apples on the way. Better than I expected. We definetly will return.

In a word - beautiful. Wonderful, quiet, location surrounded by the lovely Italian Alps. The views were very nice, which is good because beyond hiking there's not a whole lot to do up there. One thing though - we were charged more than the confirmed price on the web site. My boyfriend - who paid - didn't know this until after the fact since I made the reservation. But, whatever. It was a great hotel and well worth the extra money.

The Hotel Colle-Kolhern, located in the German-speaking sud-Tyrol region of northern Italy, was an unexpected gem. The rooms were spacious and the environment restful and relaxing. The restaurant was excellent, leaning more toward Tyrolean fare, and the wine list was extensive. The view across the river valley to the terraced hillsides of greater Balzano was unforgettable. This hotel was the best bargain of our Italian trip and a nice break for us from the hustle and crowds of Venice and the Cinque Terra. The owners are very proud of their hotel and restaurant and go out of their way to be hospitable. They provided lots of information, answered all of our questions and loaned us a local topographic map for walks on the hillside. You can reach the hotel in the small village of Colle-Kohlern by a lovely, fun cable car from the valley or by driving a challenging switchback road 800 km up the hillside.

If your looking for a panoramic view of the Bolzano area you will find it here and I think there are very few places in Italy with better views. My girlfriend and I stayed here in November 2004 and found the location, building and hospitality to be of an excellent standard. We also ate here and the lamb chops are worth a chomp as well as the veil, food compares to all good Italian restaurants, very tasty if not a little high on the calories side. The drive up to the Hotel itself is an experience and one worth doing slowly as you crawl your way up a mountain where you will find Colle-Kohlern perched on the top.

We enjoyed our stay very, very much. The quality of the service, the food and the hotel in general was simply excellent. Especially we will remember the kindness of family Schrott and all the staff. The vue from the hotel over the mountains, the valley, Bozen can hardly be described - so all in all it was an unforgettable holiday.

Highly recommend this place-the room was lovely, the view spectacular, the help was very friendly and anxious to please and the food was delicious. It was a welcome break from the hectic pace of touring northen Italy. It is a little remote, but a shuttle is available. It is one of our favorite spots.
