I went to Bologna to improve my Italian at a language school and so was travelling alone. When I arrived, I was given a small double room rather than a single because of the length of my stay and they wanted me to be more comfortable. The room was bright and airy, and the air conditioning worked a treat- just as well since I was there during the VERY hot weather- ave temp 42C!! Roberto allowed to keep my room till 4pm on my last day because it was too hot to be wandering about the day I left. The staff were very good about speaking to me in Italian when they found out why I was there! The breakfasts were typical of any Italian hotel, but served in a lovely conservatory or in the beautiful gardens. There was even a hotel cat which for me, as a cat lover, was great! If ever I'm back in Bologna, I know where I will be staying.

About 400m from the main square in Bologna, in a quiet side-street. 10 minutes easy walk to the centre. Rooms are in a variety of town-houses round a central courtyard with a covered breakfast restaurant area. No other dining area or bar. Breakfast delicious mix of hot and cold buffet with freshly prepared coffee. Staff all helpful and multi-lingual. Overall excellent - no negative comments at all.

We loved our stay at the Porta San Momolo hotel in Bologna. While hotels in the city centre are generally expensive, this one was excellent value. It is a delightful inn, built around a courtyard with a helpful and efficient staff. We had a spacious and charming room under the roof decorated with antiques and quite quiet despite being on the street. Breakfast was delicious served in a courtyard atrium room and the cappuccinos were delicious. There is internet access in the lobby and many restaurants close by including one very nice one just across the street. Highly recommended.

I wish I could have stayed longer and would certainly return. It's quite hard to find and I lost my sense of direction when I left the hotel (it would have been easier if I'd arrived while it was still light). Breakfast was easily the best ever in Italy.

One of the best hotels we have stayed in in Italy and very good value for money. Extremely friendly welcome, delightful room overlooking the hotel's lovely garden. Breakfast was taken in the garden or the garden room and was very good. Management went out if its way to make our stay enjoyable. We recommend the "Al Sangiovese" restaurant at the end of the road - authentic and friendly.

I travel to Italy every 2 years, have stayed in many places all over the country. Hotel Porta San Mamolo was, by far, the best place I've stayed. Not only my room, breakfast, and the services offered at the facility, but the location, the staff, and the nearby restaurants. The owners and their staff are about the best I've seen in terms of caring for all of the guests. Just a wonderful experience!

The breakfasts were excellent. All the staff were very helpful, particularly on reception. Our room was delightful and very comfortable. We had some exceptional food, particularly at Le Mura which is opposite the hotel. Sadly the weather wasn't brilliant during our visit so would love to go back in warmer climes and would definitely stay at Hotel Porta San Mamolo

GETTING THERE: We had a difficult time via car locating the hotel because the city provided signs indicating specific locations for hotels (e.g., Hotels A, B, C, or D). We had no idea what letter Porta San Mamolo came under. Also, the map we used from their web site was missing some important street names. Indicating distance would have been helpful as well. OUR STAY: Our room was lovely and very clean. We couldn't use the jacuzzi bathtub because when we initially turned it on, it sprayed the entire bathroom (pump that was installed is too large for its purpose). Hotel staff was friendly and helpful; breakfast room well appointed and continental breakfast items plentiful and a nice selection.

Porta San Mamolo is a wonderful hotel with exceptional staff. Our room had a courtyard window and was nice and quiet. The breakfast is just right for starting the day and for later try the San Giovese Restaurant on the corner. Perfect spot for couple and small families.

The hotel was great and the best thing was the garden area at the back, it was so relaxing and peaceful. When we arrived we had were offered a pot of tea by the warm and friendly staff and it was a great start. The staff were so helpful they couldn't help us enough to settle in. The room was very large and immaculate, as we had been upgraded, again a great start. Breakfast in the garden the next day was great, lots of choice and even better in he sun. We got the local bus from the train station for a Euro despit it stopping really close we got a bit lost, despite this it was only a couple of minutes walk into the centre of Bologna which was easy and safe. I would easily stay here again and recommend you do if you are in Bologna.

We booked a junior suite expecting a large room with a comfortable sitting out area but found a medium room with a third bed which could not really be used to sit on and a small table and 2 chairs in the corner-not what we expected for E150 per night. The bathroom was poor and we had to get the toilet mended twice. The shower height control did not adjust. It needs investment to modernise. The staff were very nice but the room was not worth the money and was not properly described. We suspect we were given an inferior room because the hotel was quite full. We moved to a much better hotel a few days later at some E40 less than we paid here. I would not reccommend this hotel, as overpriced and misleading in its decription of its rooms.

We highly recommend this hotel to anybody. We felt like royalty the moment we set foot in the welcoming foyer. Our room was the only one with a private balcony overseing the courtyard and therefor very romantic. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful and we were sad to say goodbye. We will come back to this address next time for sure!!!!

My husband and I stayed at Porta San Mamolo for two nights while in Bologna. Although far from the train station (hotel is at opposite end of the historic center from station), Bus #33 drops you off one block from the hotel. The hotel staff were exceptionally helpful (with good English skills). The breakfast was excellent and included scrambled eggs and good coffee. The room itself was a typical small room like in all of Italy, but it was clean and very quiet. The bathroom had a large shower stall. It was an easy 10-minute walk into the main square with plenty of shopping and restaurants. This was an all-around excellent hotel.

I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Porta San Mamolo very much! It's location was very central, it was only a 10 min walk to the Piazza Maggiore and the airport was only 20 min away by taxi. The breakfast was also very nice, they had 3 different kinds of cake every morning! Maybe a little to sweet... I would definitely like to return here with my boyfriend.

This hotel was excellent , our room was spacious , and quiet with its own balcony, other rooms appeared to have balconies or courtyards. the hotel offers free bikes ( if you are brave enough to ride the streets of Bologna). Breakfast is excellent and in a very attractive garden room. Staff are very helpful. There is an excellent small restaurant fifty metres down the street and a very good coffee shop close by. Access to the train via the bus is easy .

There just aren't enough superlatives to describe the Hotel Porta San Mamolo. Mr. Augustino and Irene were fabulous. They always went above and beyond and even recommended various eateries and even very potent beverages. Our room was very spacious, very well appointed, and very clean. The breakfast in what seemed like an enchanted garden was incomparable. Make sure to try the restaurant just down the street, the Al Sangiovese Ristorante. The people and the homemade pasta there are wonderful. We stayed in several hotels in our trip to Italy, and this was by far the very best. Perhaps the only downside to the hotel is that it is so nice that you really don't want to leave. The Hotel Porta San Mamolo is perfecto!

We were initially disappointed that our room only had a shower but the manager offered us an alternative room on the ground floor with a bath so we experienced both. The rooms were spacious but the second room felt quite damp so you can't win! The staff at reception were really helpful and friendly but the staff in the breakfast room were quite offhand which we found disappointing as this was the first city we visited on our Italian trip and we made a big effort to speak Italian. The hotel was only a 10 minute walk to the centre so was well-situated for all the sights. We also used the number 32 Circolare bus to get around the city - 1 Euro for an hour's travel, getting on and off as often as you like - great value. We recommend visiting San Luca Chiesa - get the number 32 bus to Porta Saragozza and then if you are happy to walk, follow the colonnades past Il Giardino until you reach the colonnaded walkway up to San Luca (takes about 1 hour). Don't take the bus turistici route towards Casaglia - it will take 3 hours to walk there if you go this way.

We stayed in a few different hotels on this trip in the same price range. This place was not the best in terms of value. The room was clean, but very dated and in need of a re vamp. It looked like it hadn't been touched for a good 15 years. The bathroom was fine and had a decent shower. The bed was comfortable. But as I said the room felt dingy and worn. The hotel itself is nice with a lovely courtyard (which our window faced onto). I didn't have the breakfast but it my husband did and he said it was the usual. I can't say enough nice things about the people who worked there, they were lovely. We had a car and instead of taking it to a garage they parked it in the hotel space outside the hotel and didn't even charge us for it. When back in Bologna I don't think we would stay there again because of the rooms, but apart from that the hotel is in a great location close to the main square and the people were very nice.

The hotel room was vey spacious and quite clean. I would stay there again if I ever return to Bologna. It's a great location, just a few blocks from the main piazzas, and a few minutes from a large beautiful park. The staff lends bicycles (which would have been perfect if the tires were filled properly) so everything interesting becomes close. The breakfast room and adjoining gardens are absolutely beautiful, and the breakfast was generous and varied. A great place to stay in Bologna!

This hotel is really charming and well worth the walk from the station (20 mins) or bus stop (15 mins) to this off-centre site. While the rooms are lovely, the garden beautiful and the breakfast excellent, what really makes this hotel a great find is the staff. When I asked for help they provided it in the kindest and most efficient fashion. They seem to be interested in the guests without being intrusive. I would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Staying at Porta San Mamolo was the highlight of our trip to Bologna. The B&B was charming, the room was very pleasant and clean, and the garden room breakfast area was a lovely way to start the day. But the best thing about Porta San Mamolo was the staff! I'm not sure even a luxury hotel could match the friendly, helpful staff here. We certainly have not encountered one that matches them anywhere else! A little difficult to find initially, its well worth the effort when you get there.

The Porta San Mamolo was an outstanding hotel in a nice residential neighborhood, an 8 minute walk from the very center of Bologna (piazza Maggiore). Bus service was about a 3 minute walk. The hotel was several connected older buildings with charm and character. The included breakfast was very good. Free WiFi service was only available in the lobby using either the hotel's computer or a personal laptop.

Delightful hotel with friendly staff and mix of accommodation in an assembly of buildings. Good breakfast in cosy breakfast room with pretty china. Good mix of traditional and modern facilities. Comfy bedroom - large bed - quaint chairs but with room safe and modern bathroom including bidet and jacuzzi bath. I have chosen this hotel because of the comments in the hotel review and I found them correct. Especially the breakfast was very good. I was only disappointed about the restaurant nearby ( Sangiovese ), it was the worst taste we had during the whole trip in Italy. Maybe there is no better restaurant nearby than this. An advantage of the hotel is that you can easily walk to the center of the town, but the neighbourhood of the hotel is not that nice and to get a parking place you should arrive as early as possible, what we lukely did.

Wonderful little hotel. Hard to get to and the reception looks nothing but the rooms are excellent. The staff are marvellous. The surprise is the lovely courtyard behind the reception where some of the rooms are located in separate buildings. There are seats , plants and a calm Italian atmosphere. The breakfast room is also there and its pretty and clean and the breakfast is great and includes hot bacon and scambled and boiled eggs and the best morning fruit juice I have ever had [ carrot and other ingredients apparantly] and it is all included in the price. A great find and thoroughly recommended at the price. Thanks Venere.

If you are traveling through Bologna for even a day I cannot recommend this hotel more highly. The only problem I had was that it took a bit of time to figure out how to operate the AC unit (it's a remote control). Wonderful staff, incredible breakfast spread. Requires a taxi ride from the train station but within easy walking distance of all the major sites.

We were on vacation in Italy and stayed here two different times. We stayed the first night of our trip and the last two nights at this lovely hotel. The accommodations are wonderful, staff is very friendly and helpful, the garden and breakfast room are special. We would definitely stay here again.

The staff is, as mentioned before, wonderful! Very helpful and attentative. Don´t hesitate to ask for suggestions on where to go and what to do. The room however facing the street outside is loud. There is a restaurant just in front of the hotel and guests made noise when stepping outside to smoke. They kept shouting and laughing until 2 am. Not the hotels fault but if you´re a fuzzy sleeper, make sure to get a room facing the garden. Another thing, we could hear everything our neighbour was talking about and doing at night... It felt like they were sharing rooms with us. Breakfastarea is beautiful in the garden with lovely cappuccino and a nice buffé with hot and cold choices. Nice staff here too. We spent three rainy days in Bologna and didn´t enjoy the fact that Piazza Maggiore actually is more distant than 400 m as mentioned on the website. We had a wonderful dinner at restaurant "Al Sagiovese" in the same street as the hotel, do try it!

The hotel is lovely and the staff so friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and went back at the end of our trip. We would definitely stay here again. The breakfast room in the courtyard/garden area is so lovely and the breakfasts are wonderful. There are several very good restaurants in the area and it is only a 10-15 minute walk to the main piazza.

A fantastic hotel! Roberto and his team were very welcoming and helpful through out our stay. Our room was fantastic, lots of space and a good bathroom. The shower was a little small however this is normal for Italy. Breakfast was one of the best breakfasts we had during our trip. Fresh fruit salad, everywhere else it was from a tin. The staffs make a great coffee. The breakfast room is beautiful it is set in an old glass house in the garden. This hotel also had great attention to detail which makes it a great stay. I would recommend anyone to this hotel!

My stay at the Hotel Porta San Mamolo was wonderful. The location of the property fit perfectly with my plans in and around bella Bologna. The management and staff were most accomodating and friendly. My room was comfortable and quiet. I will be back for another visit!

Stayed at basement level room. The hotel was lovely, the room big and the bathroom very big and nicely decorated (as was the room). Our overall stay was great and we would definitely recommend this hotel. The only problem was that the sound insulation with the room next door was not very good and in the morning you could hear the neighbours talking. Not sure if this problem is valid also for other rooms. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is till 10:00, it would have been great to have it till 10:30, if not 11:00. Overall definitely recommend the hotel.

The friendly multi-lingual staff at Porta San Mamolo were a tremedous asset to making our first Italy experience fondly memorable. The owner, Roberto, seemed to be everywhere paying attention to detail. Four star service. The hotel has good public transportation access to the train station and airport. While the hotel is a little difficult to locate by car due to traffic patterns, it is well worth the effort. The hotel is in a 15th century building like those surrounding it. The open beam ceilings on the top floor give a sense of architecture and beauty from the past. The rooms are spacious with comfortable beds and are well maintained. All fixtures were in good working order and the bathrooms were very modern and clean. Towels are plentiful. The Breakfast dining area is in an enclosed glassed-in structure set in the middle of a courtyard that is tastefully decorated with potted flowers, plants and trees. The beauty of this spot is enough to justify a stay at Porta San Mamolo. This lovely dining space is surpassed only by the delicious fresh breads, rolls, cereals, fruits, meats and cheeses served with excellent coffees and teas. We sampled capuccino all over Italy and at Porta San Mamolo we found the best. Also, just up the street from the hotel at the corner is an excellent restaurant called Il Sangiovese. You will love its food and the wine. The hotel location offers little in the way of street parking and thus, I recommend that the visitor take advantage of hotel parking. It is worth the extra fee and your auto will be cared for. By comparison, of the four hotels where we were guests, Hotel Porta San Mamolo was the best value and best experience of our two-week trip. We liked it so much that we planned our travel to return there for our last day and night in Italy.

The Hotel Porta San Mamolo was a delight...every detail was perfect and I can't wait to go back. The room was very spacious and BEAUTIFUL - quaint and "Italian". The location couldn't have been better and the staff was absolutely fantastic - truely make their property the guest's home "away from home." Don't leave Bologna without eating at the restaurant at the end of the block from the hotel - the food is exquisite and very reasonably priced. Bologna is fantastic in itself...prepare to spend extra time here...we didn't want to leave! ENJOY!

We thoroughly enjoyed Bologna and this hotel. The staff was pleasant upon our arrival. The oversized bathtub was a welcome sight after two weeks of travel during a hot spell and only having had access to small shower stalls. There is a restaurant next to the hotel that is quite lovely - Al Sangiovese. Their Pasta Bolognese is delicious and the owner serves a nice family made wine to go with it. We enjoyed many fine restaurants but one nice smaller, less expensive one that we thoroughly enjoyed was Pizzeria Trattoria Belfiore on Via Marsala-the folks couldn't have been nicer and the food excellent. Something a bit more pricey was Taverna di Lords but the waiter was worth the price. Food was also very good. All in all, hotel has great location and Bologna is nice to visit. The hotel also found us a lovely guide, Tamara Sonego. You won't be sorry if you stay here. The rooms are spacious enough to chill out after a long day and also if Bologna is one of your stops after being on the road for a while. One night we had take-out from Al Sangiovese in our room and the sitting area provided the necessary space. You won't be sorry if you stay here. One thing -- if you try to speak Italian, it makes life much easier, the Italians appreciate it and will be very helpful because you make the effort. Buon Voyaggio.

This is a very clean, modern, spacious, and well maintained hotel. The young lady who ran the desk was just back from New York and, although suffering from jet lag, was very helpful. The hotel is a bit difficult to find since it is located on a very narrow street within the old walled city. Parking, even in front of the hotel is tight, but then a valet takes your car off to a remote facility and retrieves it for you later. The breakfast room is especially pleasant. The restaurant at the corner (not affiliated with the hotel) was possibly my favorite from my 2 week stay in Italy.

Upon arriving in at the Hotel Porta San Mamolo Bologna this past July we were very pleasantly surprised at the accomodations. It is a darling hotel and from the moment we walked into the lobby we were greeted with sincere kindness, warmth and efficiency. They were very accomodating in every way. The rooms were spacious and immaculate. The little courtyard and breakfast room so pretty. Our only disappointment was that we were not able to stay longer than the one night. Upon returning to Bologna we will most definitely stay again at the Hotel Porta San Mamolo. It is a beautiful little Boutique Hotel.

My husband and I loved this hotel. The staff were really frinedly, helpful and unpretentious. The room we stayed in was brand new and beautifully furnished in Italian style, and we even had our little private elavator to get to it. The garden was really quaint and atmospheric and full of flowers. The breakfast room was magnificent and food delicious! The hotel is in a quiet street, about 10 minutes walk from town main center. It was our favourite hotel of our whole trip, and we wished we had booked longer here. We would recommend it to every one.

Lovely hotel a bit of a walk away from the center of Bologna but excellent value for the money. Bologna was towards the end of a three week car trip to mostly Northern Italy. The Hotel was a challange to find due to one way streets. However it was worth the trouble. This place is a real find. Behind the old facade of the building you will be greated by the most friendly proffesional staff. This is not your run of the mill hotels. The rooms are large, modern, spotless a/c that works. All spread around a beautiful garden with glass enclosed breakfast room in the middle. This was the best of all our bookings. You can walk to the major attractions. And the bus line that circles the city is one block away. Great small family run restaurant on the corner.

This was our first trip to Bologna, and we selected the hotel off the comments on this website. The hotel completely lived up to our expectations. It's a beautiful, spacious hotel, and the staff is extremely helpful, with great help in English, too. The hotel is a bit distant from the very center square in town, but it was only about a 10 minute walk there, and less than a 30 minute walk to the train station. This was a fabulous place from which to base a trip to Bologna and the surrounding countryside.

A beautiful, warm, friendly place, where only the fee to garage the car--18 euros/day--came as an unpleasant surprise. A five minute walk to central Bologna, but a bit difficult to get to with a car because of the maze of one way streets. A great place, a fabulous room.

Bologna is a beautiful city, and our short stay here in the Porta San Mamolo was very relaxing. The room was excellent, and though the bathroom was clean and more than adequate, it is not very spacious, but really much better than most hotels. We had one of the little 'villa' rooms in the courtyard, and it was wonderful being able to open the door to a beautiful rosemary garden and listen to the birdsong. The only complaint I can make is that when it rained for one of the nights we stayed, huge water droplets falling from the trees above the courtyard would fall directly onto the skylight window of our room quite loudly, and it kept me awake for a few hours in the night, but this was not really a fault of the hotel's! The staff were very friendly, breakfast was good and the coffee excellent. When we visit Bologna next, we may probably book here again. Well recommended!
