First time we had been to Bergamo and wanted to stay in the Upper City. The hotel was quite expensive but considering its location fair enough. Would have appreciated fridge in room. Staff were very friendly and helpful. All in all a lovely place to stay.

Very nice hotel in the middle of the old town with a nice view of the old streets from at least my window. Very nice bathroom. Affordable internet access. Only negative comment is the high price for breakfast. All in all very recommendable.

The hotel was in a great location and the room was good size and clean with a great bath. This was overshadowed by the most unfriendly service I have ever run into in Italy. You usually get a very warm Buon Girono.... Nothing from these people. When checking out, they were very happy to take my money, but never said thanks, goodbye, or hope to see you again. And 26 Euro (2 people) for breakfast was the final insult. I would not stay here again.

Bergamo is a delightful medieval walled city and the hotel is right in the centre of the old city (città alta. Great location. Warm, friendly family hotel, tastefully appointed rooms with attention to architectural detail and comfort. The family members were very helpful & even showed us through the renovations currently taking place. A wonderful stay and we will return to Bergamo in July 2009 and hoepfully, will meet the family again. Congratulations. A credit to the family, to the city and to Italy. We will certainly recommend this hotel to everyone who visits Bergamo.

This small hotel is just off the main square in Bergamo. We had a lovely room at the back with a fantastic view from the little balcony. The bathroom is large with modern suite ..... but we were not sure about the black loo rolls! I was initially concerned about parking our car in Bergamo's small cobbled streets, but the hotel provided us with a free pass and suggested several places where we might park. The perfect hotel for a romantic short break.

This is a lovely place in a great location. My initial impression was poor, however. When I dropped my bags off early in the morning, a grumpy and unwelcoming man at the front desk informed me that I would not be able to have my room until sometime between 3 and 4 o'clock at the earliest (check-in time is stated at 2.00 on the website). Since I was only staying in the room one night, leaving at 8 the following morning, this was annoying. However, I did come back at 2.00, my room was ready and I was helped by a very gracious woman. The room was lovely and quiet though quite small (and in contrast to other places, there were no bottles of water in the room and no refrigerator). This was the most expensive hotel I stayed in my two-week stay and my initial impression was in stark contrast to all other places during my trip.

Best small hotel I have stayed in so far in Italy. Great location and great staff in a fantastic city with lots to offer.

We found the reception most unhelpful. There are steep steps up to the hotel from the street.Nobody seemed to even consider it a function of reception to help in any way with the luggage, either on arrival or departure. This may be the norm for a 3star hotel, but at 340 euro for a double room for 2 nights, with basic breakfast, this lack of service, or of the inclination to tend to the residents' needs,is totally unacceptable. On departure, I needed to book a taxi to the airport.I asked the owner, behind the desk, to do this, as I cannot speak Italian. He handed me a card with a radio cab telephone number on it. "Ring this" he barked. I got through to the number and managed to grt across my whereabouts for collection and my destination. However, the person on the line then continued to say something in italian to me and I tried to hand my mobile phone to the manager so that he might speak for me. He would'nt take my phone. "Give him your name" he barked again. What a service! It costs nothing to be courteous.I could not get over this ignorance. I was really disenchanted with this hotel.I was also disappointed to note that the historic Piazza Vecchia is largely covered up by scaffolding. Work is going on to the exteriour walls of several main buildings and it looked nothing like as impressive as when I last visited it, 2 years ago.

We enjoyed our stay here. The hotel was clean, the room a good size, also a good sized bathroom. Friendly staff. The hotel is well located close to some excellent cafes and restaurants and to the piazza. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel as it was not included in the price and would have costed an extra 10 euros each.

Lovely hotel in the heart of Citte Alta (old town of Bergamo). There were mostly italian people in Citte Alta, not so many turists in the month of March we think. Very friendly people, both in the hotel and those we met in the town. Citte Alta is a historical place, and has splendid possibilities for walking on the city wall. Many nice restaurants in the town, and a nice shopping street. The hotel is located beside the shopping street.

We had a lovely room with a balcony with great long distance views over the surrounding countryside. The room was immaculate and spotlessly clean. We especially liked the luxurious modern bathroom with plenty of soft towels. Breakfast was a little disappointing for 10 euros, we would have preferred a buffet style breakfast or more variety. Staff were pleasant and friendly, some staff didn't speak much English, but this was not a problem - they appreciated our attempts to converse in very basic phrase book Italian! Would definitely recommend this hotel for it's great position in the Old town.

Owner of hotel a bit miserable but hotel itself was fantastic great position and one of the cleanest hotels I've stayed in. We could only have breakfast in hotel but there were so many restaurants within yards it wasn't a problem. We only stayed overnight but would recommend it for it's position and cleanliness

Very beautiful place to stay. The hotel is very centrally located (only 5 min walk to bus stop for airport) and close to all amenities. The room was exquisite - beautifully renovated and decorated and the bathroom was a treat in itself. Breakfast (at 10 euros was a litle disappointing) especially considering the cost of the hotel. Other than that an excellent base.

Hotel Piazza Vecchia is a boutique hotel situated in the heart of the old town of Bergamo. My wife and I booked a one-night stay as we were driving to Lake Como the following day, but both of us were mesmerised not only by the quality of our hotel but also the medieval town it is situated in. The hotel is chic however nestles comfortably with the antiquity of its surrounding. We vow to return only this time extending our stay. Jeff & Lynn Crosby – UK.

Do not attempt to take a car to Citta Alta to park overnight. Directions (from Venere or Hotel - not sure which) seemed to indicate that there was no problem with this, but on Saturday night it proved a most stressful experience! Sorry that on our visit there seemed to be a hen party in residence who partied until 3.30 a.m. Bergamo a most delightful place to visit and would certainly go again - perhaps with other accommodation.

A lovely small hotel in the centre of the old city about 100 meters from the Piazza Vecchia and cathedral. Our room overlooked the main street although this is laregley pedestrianised and so very quite. There is a reasonable and economical restaurant over the road. Nice breakfast (although extra). Efficient staff. Hotel recommended due to position and charm; there are cheaper options in the new town but that didn’t look very interesting.

We did enjoy our stay at the Piazza Vecchia. Our room was wonderful, clean and spacious and right in the heart of the old town of Bergamo. Our only complaints were that we were unable to get into our room until 2pm, although they allowed us to leave our suitcase with them it would have been nice if we had been able to freshen up after 6 hours of travelling before strolling the area especially as we arrived at the hotel at around 10am. We got the impression that this was policy and not because our room was not ready as we returned to the hotel at 1pm and we were still not allowed into our room and our suitcase had been joined by several others whose owners were presumably not allowed into their rooms either. Also, breakfast is not included in the price and at 10 euros each I think we would have received better value if we had breakfast outside the hotel. We only saw two men working at the hotel during our stay and the one who could speak English appeared decidedly miserable to say the least. Having said that though I would recommended the hotel and stay there again.

As previous reviews of this hotel were a little mixed, we were wary of what we might find. The location persuaded us to take a gamble - it was well worth it! One of our party was late due to flight delay, and the receptionist was very helpful and understanding. The proprietors do seem a little more comfortable speaking French than English, but this was not a problem. Leaving our luggage at reception during the final day was also agreed immediately. The hotel deserves to be popular and successful.

This is not a luxury hotel. There is no luxury hotel in the Mediaeval part of Bergamo. However, I recommend that you stay in the "Cita Alta" and this hotel is clean, tasteful (with lots of replica "original" artworks all over the place)friendly, perfectly located, and for a short stay perfectly adequate. If you want a place for more than a few nights it would become claustrophobic). Ask for a room with a balcony. Eat at Donizetti about 100 m away. It's one of the few "Slow Food" restaurants for miles and whilst it has a small menu the cheese and wines are FABULOUS. This is a great little bolt hole. (Probably not great if you have kids ....unless they are more sophisticated than mine ....as it's a bit small and there are few things for them to do in and around the hotel.

We had never been to Italy before and were delighted to spend our first night here. We had read other reviews and awaited the 'welcome' at the desk with baited breath. The lady was charming in Italian, English and French! She showed us round, pointed out her paintings and was lovely. The room was great. Modern interior but with aspects such as old beams and plasterwork showing the building's older heritage. The area is beautiful and you are right in the heart of it. There are lovely food shops and boutiques, lovely architaecture and so on. The local car park attendent was helpful and we ate at a GREAT restarant (and we ar fussy) called Da Mimmo or Da Mimmi? Fabulous food and wine, great service. It was a bit noisy in the early morning because of the bin collection but not too bad. The sound of people and church bells didn't bother us at all but might be a problem if you had young children. The one down side of the hotel was having to pay an extra 10 euros each for a very lack lustre breakfast. All our other hotels had breakfast included. My advice would be not to have the breakfast but to check out, walk 5 metres and hav a lovely coffee and breakfast at one of the many local places instead. We will definitely return to Bergamo and will certainly stay here again when we do.

An excellent hotel situated in the heart of the "Old Town". Many very good restaurants and cafes on the doorstep. Easy access to public transport (very cheap !). Would recommend hotel very highly, original exterior with modern interior, but still retaining old world atmosphere.
