Very clean and welcoming Hotel just few minutes walking distance from the forbidden city. It has been a real relief in my Beijing stay.

We can only recommend the Shatan without reservations: after having stayed in mostly 5-star rated hotels in other cities around China, this was by far the MOST PLEASANT experience for the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the great location within walking distance of prime sites and last but not least the good English of the staff! When I come back to Beijing I will definitely get back here!

Really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The street in which it is situated is very lively and interesting (the pancakes served by the lady down the road are simply delicious). It is right by the Forbidden City and not too far away from the subway. A very good hotel.

Even though this Hotel was within the back streets of Beijing we enjoyed our stay there. However, elderly couples may not like where this Hotel is situated. Regards Sharron

We stayed only on our lastnight. Its very far from tourist area. But the people at the reception were very helpful. Room was very cold and it took awhile to heat it up. We asked for 2 cards and left the heater on with the extra card. But after we came back from dinner, the room is still very cold. At the reception, it says no smoking but the chinese people were still smoking. The breakfast is good but we were quite few people staying at the hotel but still one of the table was left unclean. I prefer holiday inn hotel close to tianamen sq. - its a perfect location an di would recommned it defintely!

Stayed in a standard room with two twin beds and was one of the best hotels I stayed in during my trip. Room was clean and serviced every day. The heating in the room was fantastic and the bathroom was the cleanest I'd seen. The hotel staff were great during check in and most spoke English. Alot of them didn't have very good knowledge of places to visit and they kept changing the cost for internet access. The area is alittle bit off the main street but always felt safe walking around alone. About a 15 minute walk to get to the train station or otherwise go through the trauma of catching the buses. Overall a great place to stay for its price.

Off the beaten path...which is nice. You really feel like you are in China, as opposed to being at a purely western type hotel (that could be anywhere. Great location. I would definitely stay there again.

Very nice hotel in a good location, but 15 minutes walk from nearest subway station. Would definitely stay here again.

I reviewed many hotels on line before choosing the Shatan. My main priorities were price and location. The Hotel Shatan met both needs. It was extremely affordable and very close to the Forbidden City. From the reviews I read on line, I knew that the hotel would be a bit difficult to find but our driver used the map we printed from the website and didn't have much trouble. The Hotel is beautiful. The rooms are gigantic and very comfortable. We had a large screen tv and even a tv over the bed that we could watch laying down! It was nice having the large sitting area in addition to the huge bed. Every day the elevator mat was changed to the current day of the week. I thought that was so cute! Beer is cheap at the little downstairs 'bar'. Chinese beer is the best I have tasted. The bar is really just a cooler with drinks in it. The breakfast buffets that we booked with the room were outstanding! So many things to try! We had dinner one night in the hotel and decided to eat out the rest of the meals except breakfast. The staff spoke very good English and were very helpful.

Great hotel, clean, staff very helpful (booked internal flights, trips, taxis etc),their english quiet good. Loation could not be better, with in walking distance of Forbidden City, Tianamen Square. Must visit Crows hill park, only 300 metres from hotel (From hotel turn left to end of street, then right and 150 metres on your left), watch locals singing, dancing and exercising, great. Even though hotels on a back street, i found the people friendly and helpful. Again good hotel, great location.

Stayed with my wife(who is Chinese)breakfast was very good and service was very good.We ate chinse breakfast every day. I would stay there again. Can walk to most major areas and local resturants in the area. Can walk to Fobidden City, and Jingshang Park. Easy to get around by bus. Taxis are there if you need them.

The location is very good, the stuff is friendly; some of them have good English. The breakfast was acceptable. The hotel was very helpful with organizing all entertainments. It is easy to find an English speaking guide for a reasonable price in Bejing. Taxi drivers have difficulties to find the hotel so take from the reception a card with the map and the name of the hotel written in Chinese. I enjoyed staying at the Shatan hotel and all together the time in Beijing was most enjoyable.

Just one word, PERFECT! the location is incredible, the staff is extremelly helpful and friendly, the rooms are exactly as in pictures...When I come back, I will go to the same hotel for sure. And only 3 stars...I should say 4 stars. And the breakfast, all kind of foods in the morning, if you are European, you will have coffe, milk, toast, jam, ... and if you wanna more... noodles, corn, salads, eggs,...and a very long etc. Furthermore you have a Chinese restaurant inside the hotel, and just in front of the hotel a massage center...very cheap (5€ for the foot massage, and 10€ for the body massage, and each one of them is for 1 hour!). you can go everywhere from the hotel, is 5 minutes walking from the Forbidden City, and if you need a taxi the receptioninst will call for one...and you are not going to pay any hidden commision!

Rooms are pretty small but clean, and service at reception desk exceptional good (Englisk spoken by staff). Location of hotel is excellent in a small hutong minutes walk north of the Forbidden City. Ten minutes taxi drive to many shops, restaurants and bars in the Nanluogu Xiang and Hanhai Lake. Subway Dongsi station 20 minutes walk from hotel. Highly recommended hotel.

this is not a 5 star hotel, HOWEVER you are walking distance to the Forbidden City and other sites. Central location is the plus. Not too extensive of Western breakfast, however there is an xcln't coffee shop a block away. Plus small markets - plus a laundry. Very convenient. Good value for location.

Our double room was huge, very nicely furnished. Only the safe didn't work. The breakfast was varied, a mix of Chinese and Western. The staff was very helpful, although often the first person couldn't answer and they brought in someone else. The hotel is near the main sights and located on a buzzing back street - excellent for restaurants and on-the-street dining and experiencing China. We paid almost half the price quoted in the hotel lobby (thank you Venere!), so it was excellent value for money. If we go back to Beijing, we'd definitely stay here again.

Be sure to visit Jianshan park often (morning for tai chi and evening for sunsets and breezes). It's only a block away and 2 yuan for admission. The greenery and flowers are wonderful.

Nice hotel located in a real Chinese area. Make sure you get the hotel name and address in Chinese of the net, otherwise you may have trouble telling the taxi driver where to take you. This was our first stay at the Shatan. Breakfast may be a problem as limited western type food, mainly cakes, however if you like Chinese food breakfast was excellent. Rooms were very clean and comfortable, most staff at reception spoke fair english and one lady spoke excellent english. Get reception to organise taxis for you for all travel. Go for a walk down the street that the hotel is located in (try at night) this is a real experience. For the price this hotel was excellent.

I enjoyed staying at the Shatan, good breakfast, comfortable beds however housekeeping needs to do a better job cleaning the floors in the rooms, ie vacuuming carpets daily as well as bathroom.

Could not be better located. Any closer to the Forbidden City and you'd actually have to be in it! Compact rooms but well laid out and great value for money
