A nice surprise was to be given the opportunity to have a roof top terrace room for the same price if we would wait for a late check in. Well worth the wait as the terrace overlooked the square and the Cathedral and was a large terrace with beautiful plants....a wonderful experience in the neat city of Barcelona. The hotel's location makes it an excellent choice and we highly recommend it. A first class run operation for sure.

The hotel is good, but the room I got was quite disappointing. It was rather small and very dark, since the only window was on an interior court and it was a first floor. Consider that at the moment of reservation I had specified a well-lighted room was a priority. I asked to change the room and they told me thay could give me another room in the same part of the hotel, although on the fourth floor. This was a little better, but still very dark. The common parts are ok, but the hotel is getting old and you can see it. I can't consider it a real four-stars hotel. I stayed once in the twin Residencia Colon, supposedly the worst of the two (it's a 3 stars hotel), but I liked it much more

We enjoyed very much our first trip to Barcelona because of this nice hotel. Good location to get to spots. Hotel colon is elegant and older style. The room is quiet. Restaurant was also excellent. We had breakfast buffet and Mediterranean dishes.

The hotel is perfectly located for sightseeing, eating out and shopping. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is rather costly (18 euros), however, you get acidic instant coffee which will eat away the lining of your stomach. It gets really noisy over the weekend nights (fireworks and music).

The hotel is very well located and the staff is very helpful. The rooms are spacious and very well kept (housekeeping makes two round a day and turns down the beds in the early evening!)the only thing is that the furniture is a little old.

The hotel was lovely and in a wonderful location. Our room was large, nice and quiet, but the window opened up to a narrow space filled with pipes which not only was ugly, but also allowed for very little air circulation. This would not have been a problem if air conditioning had been available as was indicated on Venere.com's website. However, during our stay in April, the system had not yet been switched from heating. The days were warm and the open window offered little if any breeze. Sleeping in the heat was difficult. This had a negative impact on our stay in this lovely hotel. I would not have booked a room here if I had realized that air conditioning would not be available at this time of year. I would still recommend this hotel as a great place to stay in Barcelona, but be aware that they do not provide air conditioned rooms year round.

We were there at the end of January 2009 for sightseeing for 4 nights. The surrounding was excellent - the Barcelona Cathedral, La Rambla, and the taxi stand are within 0-1 minute walking. The room was big and clean. There were enough light bulbs. Only that the window was small and faced other hotel windows and the distance was only about 15 meters. Not enough day light. The food was superior. Fresh, delicious, clean, and well-presented. The charge for an extra bed was not reasonable. They charged 40 Euros on top of about 120 euro. The welcoming receptionist was an unsmiling middle-aged gentleman and didn't speak English well enough so I couldn't really reason with him. Plus we had got very tired from traveling, so I gave up reasoning with him. Anyway, if an additional bed cost 40 euro, at least half discount should be given to my son who's only 11. The receptionists were arrogant (except one). When I asked about bottled drinking water, the guy said "This is the reception, how can I have bottled water?" Well, from where I came, even 3 star hotel would provide 2 bottles of water free every day. It's all ok to tell me that it's not the same case in Barcelona, but he didn't have to be so rude! Soap and shower cap were not replaced. I used up one soap after 2 days but there was not a new one. My shower cap was thrown away by the housekeeper but there was not a replacement. I had to wait twice (each time about 10 minutes) to get my shower cap. Wasting my time for rest. If it's a 2 or 3 star hotel I would tolerate, but it is a 4 star. Anyway, the location was excellent for sight-seeing tours, but the rate was too high especially for the average service that we received.

The property was outstanding and the location was great, right across from the Cathedral. The bellman was from the United States so was able to help with issues that might have arisen from the language barrier. The desk staff seemed to have a difficult time processing check-in, check-out, keys, questions, etc. Would definitely recommend this to others, and would stay there again.

We celebrated our 20th anniversary in Barcelona. The room had an entrance foyer, a terrace, and felt like a suite. The plaza between the hotel and cathedral is active till late, so a room on the side was quiet -- and more desirable, we thought. The location was ideal. The hotel was, pleasantly, more upscale than we anticipated.

NOT a 4-star hotel. For 200 Euros, it was sadly lacking in any high-end features. It is barely a 3-star hotel. And the buffet breakfast at 35 Euros for 2 people, was mediocre, and over-priced.

Terrific location;very friendly and helpful staff. this was our first visit to Barcelona and we were a little concerned with safety due to the many horror stories we had heard. Our two day stay was not enough to see all of the wonderful sights. Gaudi's Sacrada Familia Church was not to be missed. Seeing the interior construction 'in progress' was a special treat.

Our room was away from the Cathedral Plaza. Rooms with views of the Cathedral cost more, which would have been a waste of money, since the Cathedral is enclosed in scaffolding for restoration work. A couple of front desk employees were not as helpful/courteous as most.

Great hotel, great location, and great staff. I can't say enough about this hotel. The only down side is the rooms don't have wifi access. You can use the TV for internet access but that if you have your laptop you will have to use it in the lobby. That is the only location where you can get access with your personal laptop. Other than that everything is perfect.

The room was poorly lit and at the back of the building. Whilst I am sure there are wonderful rooms overlooking the cathedral, the room I was allocated was not one of them. Well located and very nice hotel, however, you could get batter value from other nearby hotels.

The location is brilliant, right in the hub of everything. Easy walking to the buses, the old quarter and slightly further, the beach. The hotel is well run, clean and user friendly. Hotel Colon was largely as advertised - nice hotel in middle of best area of Barcelona. Very convenient to Gothic quarter, all of the main tourist sites, and fairly convenient to both Metro and trains from airport. The rooms themselves were nice, comfortable, European style, but a bit dated. The front desk was very helpful, friendly and spoke English. The porter gave us some tips on places to eat in the vicinity, which was nice. Air conditioning in room worked well, which was very important! Overall, we liked the location and were happy with the value for money. I might have liked a hipper look, but I was happy with the hotel and what we got for our what we paid.

The location of this hotel was excellent. We could walk everywhere. We only had one night and one day to spend in beautiful Barcelona and therefore this suited us perfectly. The service and friendliness was beyond excellent. We had a beautiful room looking at the cathedral and you could see what is going on in the square. Unfortunately, the cathedral is under renovation which did not deter from the beauty of the hotel.

The Hotel Colón is right in the centre of Barcelona, a few minutes walk from two Metro stations and only five minutes walk from Placa Catalunya. We got to the hotel quite early, having travelled overnight from Paris by train. Although we only expected to be able to leave our baggage somewhere secure, the hotel reception staff insisted on finding us a room and we were in a excellent room on the fourth floor, by 9.15 am.

I cannot say enough about the Hotel Colon. I wouldn't have chosen any other hotel property -- even if I had the choice of any regardless of price. The rooms were clean, well appointed and comfortable. We were given a cathedral view, even though we paid for a room without a view. The hotel staff was excellent. Finally, the location is the best in the city -- by far. I love this hotel, and would stay again in a heartbeat!!

The only comment we have is that we paid "extra" to have a room with a view of the cathedral and unfortunately the cathedral was under construction and therefore covered in scaffolding!! Hotel Colon is in a prime location, opposite the cathedral in the bari gothic district of the city. It is close to the La Rambles and Catalunya Square. The Hotel itself is very pleasant, the bar area fairly quiet, and dining area quite formal. Breakfast wasnt included but was quite expensive, however there are many places close to the hotel to grab a coffee and toast etc. All in all a pleasant hotel great location, could find hotels for less dollars but the location paid for itself.

The hotel was beautiful, better than the pictures, with a fantastic location in the heart of Barcelona. We are two older women traveling together. Booked the lowest priced double and was upgraded to a view of the cathedral and plaza below our 3rd floor window/balcony. The plaza was full of holiday vender stalls and a lot of activity. Had some concern about noise but when we close the balcony doors our room was quiet and very comfortable. Good beds and space in the room. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Common areas were clean and very well maintained. Breakfast buffet was a little expensive but offered a wide variety to choose from with excellent service and was very good. Don’t pass up the FRESH squeezed orange juice. Thank you, we had a great time I had never booked a hotel via an internet site until now so I had concerns. I will definitely use Venere again.

Could not have picked a better place. Location right next to the cathedral is excellent, very close to La Rambla and easy to get to the beach. The room was perhaps a bit smaller than expected, but for one person was still easily big enough, and along with the bathroom was very clean. My room was at the back of the building overlooking a lane with the occassional noisy moped, but closing the windows effectively blocked out any noise and the building itself was very quiet. I highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again the next time I visit Barcelona!

Very spacious and comfortable room. Young American bellman was the best employee we encountered---friendly, competent and professional. Some of the other front desk personnel a bit on the chilly side, with one actually chasing my travel companion out the front door the morning of checkout because he thought she was leaving without paying. (I had already paid the bill and was talking with the bellman outside the front door.) The hotel is within walking distance from the airport bus stop at Plaza Catalunya---about 2 and 1/2 blocks, but on a pedestrian-only street. Starbucks for morning coffee is one block away, and with Barcelona prices, it's a good place for breakfast. Hotel is conveniently close to the Ramblas, the excellent and user-friendly Metro as well as many restaurants. With traffic being heavy all the time, use the Metro to get to landmarks such as Familia Sagadra Cathedral Casa Mila, both "don't miss" places to visit. I would definitely stay at this hotel again due to location and quality of rooms.

Overall an excellent hotel. I had one of the rooms at the back of the hotel without the view which would normally be fine since they are usually the quietest, however the hotel was renovating on the floor above me which was a problem. The hotel provided me with complimentary breakfast as compensation for the disruption, I thought that was quite adequate. The hotel location can not be faulted, the staff were friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and would most certainly stay there again. Wireless internet access cost 10 euro for 24 hours.. however if you have a wireless network detector (the type that hangs off your keyring) you can easily find free access in the bars around the hotel.. just ask.

I stayed at Colon Hotel twice - 4 nights total. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Though the carpets are a bit dated. But hey you will not be sleeping on the carpet so it hardly matters! Location is best in all of Barcelona. Walking distance to Las Rambalas, Catalunya Square, and all the best shopping areas. Rates offered on website do not advertise whether inclusive of breakfast or not. But there is a Starbucks a stone throw away and quaint cafes on the Cathedral square as soon as you step out of the Hotel. Would stay at Colon when I visit again. Cheers !

A very enjoyable break in Barcelona. Although paying the lowest rate advertised for a double room, we had a Cathedral view, although still covered in scaffolding, on the fifth floor. The Christmas Market in the plaza was in full swing from morning to night, but did not bother us. Staff were helpful when asked for anything and spoke much better English than our Spanish. We did not use the restuarant, but followed previous comments and breakfasted in the 2 cafes across the square, which both supplied an excellent cooked breakfast. Would definately use this hotel again, especially for its central location.

This is a lovely and comfortable hotel and cathedral views fantastic (on 5th floor). I cannot fault the service and rooms and hotel is so central. Breakfast was great but also used the cafe opposite (as mentioned by previous visitor, thanks!) for a lighter start to the day. We did not eat there in the evening. Air con was good so a real relief on returning to our room. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Barcelona, though relatively expensive, you get what you paid for.

The rates seem to vary quite a bit, but I found a double room (non-view) on venere.com for 105 euros, which I thought was a great deal. As of Dec 2005 the cathedral across the plaza is undergoing renovations, so I wouldn't spend the money for a view room.

Location, price and public areas excellent. Bedroom size and furnishing below expectation for a four star hotel. Front desk staff professionally competent but cold and unwelcoming.

Rooms requested were at back; My friend accepted noisy back room; After receptionist barked at me that room+cathedral view costs 260 euros, I barked back (in Spanish) agreed to price and got lovely room on square; Staff helpful. Rooms cleaned late.

This hotel is very nice. It's loceted very central so you can reach metro stations within minutes. The staff is friendly and competent. The romms are comfortable, but not allof them are quiet. The hotel is equipped with WLAN access so it can also be used for business trips very well. I was there for a week for visting Barcelona and I would choose this hotel again.

Fantastic downtown location but noisy construction area from 7am on. Good service offered by front desk, nice bar & restaurant. Rooms are ok but pricy.

My husband, mother-in-law, myself, and a friend stayed at this hotel while in Barcelona. The hotel was way above average for European hotels. Also, it was in a great location. Literally, you walk out the door and across the street is the Gothic Cathedral and if you walk to the right there is great shopping and the way to Las Ramblas. We would definitely stay here again!!

The hotel was excellent! High quality with an excellent staff who were extremely helpful(they even spoke excellent English). The Hotel is located on the plaza directly across from the Gothic Cathedral. There was a market in the plaza and gift shops. All food and the La Rambla were in walking distance. At night a live band played in the plaza with dancing. It was wonderful. I was traveling with my 3 daughters and felt very safe. I would deffinitely stay there again.

We were disappointed with the "Cathedral View." Had we known that the cathedral's facade was entirely concealed by scaffolding (for restoration) we would have sought out a different hotel. We received exactly what we contracted for...a full view of the cathedral...which unfortunately was hidden by the construction work.

This is a fabulous hotel! It was far beyond our expectations. It is spacious and elegant. The staff were tremendously kind and helpful. They all spoke English, which made communication so easy. The rooms were spacious. We had a nice balcony off our room, with a beautiful view of the cathedral. The location can not be beat. Our rooms were well tended and all our needs were met. I would highly recommend hotle Colon!

This was a very nice hotel with a great location in the Gothic Quarter and next to the famous Barcelona Cathedral. It was very convenient to get around town from this location. The price we received here was also very good.

July 2005. Nice location except the Cathedral is undergoing extensive cleaning/renovation. Despite that the room wasn't noisy. The staff was excellent and most helpful with taxis/directions/anything we asked. Nice little tappas kitty-corner on the square and Bus Turistic stop also across the square.

Excellent hotel well located... but a little bit expensive, especially breakfast (15€) that was not mentioned or missed to check when I reserved.
