We chose Hotel Colon primarily because of its location. Being history nuts, we wanted a comfortable place near the intriguing Gothic Quarter and the cathedral. We didn't realise while booking what an amazing choice we'd actually made! We got rooms facing the cathedral & could have happily spent entire nights sitting in the balcony watching the ceaseless entertainment in the square below with the eternal beauty of the cathedral bathed in moonlight & the Gothic Quarter shrouded in darkness just beyond. EVERYTHING was walking distance. La Ramblas, the beautiful port with bubble blowers, music fests & gorgeous sunsets, all touristic sights(Gaudis wonders included), bars loud or tucked away, restaurants quaint or famous, boutiques unknown but delightful, stores well known...Barcelona glorious Barcelona!! The hotel itself is beautiful, comfortable, modern with an old fashioned air elegantly draped around it. If we go back to the city it's the ONLY place I would stay in!

The hotel was lovely, but the front desk had no record of our reservation when we arrived. They also told us that our friend was not registered at the hotel when he was, and the staff seemed generally a little clue-less. We had wanted a room for three people (one adult and two children) with a cathedral view, but that was not possible. (It was also not possible to understand from the website what rooms were available for three people). The facilities are truly lovely, but it is a shame that the hotel has petty rules that get in the way of enjoying these beautiful facilities. Specifically, the rule about no outside food and refusing to allow us to eat anywhere when our picnic from the market was rained out, seemed ridiculous. And the fact that the gorgeous rooftop spa has very limited hours (10am-8pm) made it almost impossible for us to enjoy it, as we were out sightseeing for all of those hours (the one time we did manage to use it, there were no towels...). We hope that the hotel can relax some of these rules so that guests can fully enjoy this lovely facility. Thank you!

The hotel is in a perfect location in Barcelona. The cathedral in front had something festive in the square every day that we were there. We had room 125 facing the back. It had a view of the street at the back of the hotel. The view was fine. Quiet every night. Beds and pillows were comfy. Huge room and bathroom. Every part of the hotel was elegant and well maintained. Hotel staff were always polite and helpful. The hotel is a gem and I will definitely stay here again. We did breakfast out and about, not at the hotel since it was expensive. We never went to the restaurant to see the buffet however. Jameel metro is like five min walk. 35-40 euro taxi to or from airport. ATMs everywhere for euro. Credit cards are taken almost everywhere. One thing to note if you've been to Park Guell before. You now have to pay a fee to go on the patio area and down the steps. It just started last October, so when we went they were sold to capacity until 3 hours later:( taxi there was 12 euro. We did the cable car which was a great 7 min view of Barcelona. But it was about 1 1/2 hour wait to do this. I recommend taking the elevator to the to of the Columbus monument. It is a tight squeeze to walk around at the top but worth it. Great clothes shopping everywhere. We bought cheap wine and a baguette every day to enjoy. Cannot wait to go back!!!

When we arrived to the hotel, we didn't get the room, what was pictured on the webpage. When I asked for THAT room, they rudely told me, that it is not an actual room. However, even with this incident we had a wonderful stay, we got a nice, large, bright, clean room. The staff was pleasant, professional and helful. The placement of the hotel is wonderful: it is the center of the city.

Wonderful location but very expensive. We booked a superior room with cathedral view = Unfortunately, there was a book fair in the plaza for the entire 4 days of our stay which obscured our view of the cathedral, produced considerable noise and prevented our use of the outdoor café/bar (no view of the cathedral and excessive noise).

excellent location with close proximity of everything. Clean facilities and comfortable sized room. There could be a rooms with noise since it is facing to the square, however our room was very quiet and we had no problem with noise in the night. La Rambla is in 5 min. Water front is in 10 min. Shopping area is in 5min. Plenty restaurants and cafe withing a block. I will definitely stay in this hotel if I get an opportunity to visit Barcelona.

We stayed in the family room with our 2 kids and we had plenty of room. The hotel is in the plaza adjacent to the famous cathedral. I had heard so much about pick pockets and crime after I had book our trip to Barcelona that I almost cancelled our trip. I'm am glad I did not. We had no issues and we walked everywhere day and night. I never felt unsafe or in any kind of danger. We are seasoned travelers and always stayed together. We were usually in our rooms by 11PM. Enjoy!!

Well appointed, good sized rooms in a great location. Helpful staff. A modern hotel so a little lacking in character to my taste. My room was at the back, facing onto the central light well rather than the street. This meant it was quiet but a little gloomy. Rooms on the street would probably be noisier. As I only used my room as a place to sleep this arrangement suited me. My only real complaint is about the shower. It had a fancy shower head with different settings - "jet", "rain", "massage" etc, but the only setting I could get was "trickle".

A nice surprise was to be given the opportunity to have a roof top terrace room for the same price if we would wait for a late check in. Well worth the wait as the terrace overlooked the square and the Cathedral and was a large terrace with beautiful plants....a wonderful experience in the neat city of Barcelona. The hotel's location makes it an excellent choice and we highly recommend it. A first class run operation for sure.

The hotel is good, but the room I got was quite disappointing. It was rather small and very dark, since the only window was on an interior court and it was a first floor. Consider that at the moment of reservation I had specified a well-lighted room was a priority. I asked to change the room and they told me thay could give me another room in the same part of the hotel, although on the fourth floor. This was a little better, but still very dark. The common parts are ok, but the hotel is getting old and you can see it. I can't consider it a real four-stars hotel. I stayed once in the twin Residencia Colon, supposedly the worst of the two (it's a 3 stars hotel), but I liked it much more

The hotel is perfectly located for sightseeing, eating out and shopping. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is rather costly (18 euros), however, you get acidic instant coffee which will eat away the lining of your stomach. It gets really noisy over the weekend nights (fireworks and music).

The hotel was lovely and in a wonderful location. Our room was large, nice and quiet, but the window opened up to a narrow space filled with pipes which not only was ugly, but also allowed for very little air circulation. This would not have been a problem if air conditioning had been available as was indicated on Venere.com's website. However, during our stay in April, the system had not yet been switched from heating. The days were warm and the open window offered little if any breeze. Sleeping in the heat was difficult. This had a negative impact on our stay in this lovely hotel. I would not have booked a room here if I had realized that air conditioning would not be available at this time of year. I would still recommend this hotel as a great place to stay in Barcelona, but be aware that they do not provide air conditioned rooms year round.

We were there at the end of January 2009 for sightseeing for 4 nights. The surrounding was excellent - the Barcelona Cathedral, La Rambla, and the taxi stand are within 0-1 minute walking. The room was big and clean. There were enough light bulbs. Only that the window was small and faced other hotel windows and the distance was only about 15 meters. Not enough day light. The food was superior. Fresh, delicious, clean, and well-presented. The charge for an extra bed was not reasonable. They charged 40 Euros on top of about 120 euro. The welcoming receptionist was an unsmiling middle-aged gentleman and didn't speak English well enough so I couldn't really reason with him. Plus we had got very tired from traveling, so I gave up reasoning with him. Anyway, if an additional bed cost 40 euro, at least half discount should be given to my son who's only 11. The receptionists were arrogant (except one). When I asked about bottled drinking water, the guy said "This is the reception, how can I have bottled water?" Well, from where I came, even 3 star hotel would provide 2 bottles of water free every day. It's all ok to tell me that it's not the same case in Barcelona, but he didn't have to be so rude! Soap and shower cap were not replaced. I used up one soap after 2 days but there was not a new one. My shower cap was thrown away by the housekeeper but there was not a replacement. I had to wait twice (each time about 10 minutes) to get my shower cap. Wasting my time for rest. If it's a 2 or 3 star hotel I would tolerate, but it is a 4 star. Anyway, the location was excellent for sight-seeing tours, but the rate was too high especially for the average service that we received.

The property was outstanding and the location was great, right across from the Cathedral. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in Barcelona. The room had an entrance foyer, a terrace, and felt like a suite. The plaza between the hotel and cathedral is active till late, so a room on the side was quiet -- and more desirable, we thought. The location was ideal. The hotel was, pleasantly, more upscale than we anticipated.

Very convenient to Gothic quarter, all of the main tourist sites, and fairly convenient to both Metro and trains from airport. The rooms themselves were nice, comfortable, European style, but a bit dated. The front desk was very helpful, friendly and spoke English. The hotel was beautiful, better than the pictures, with a fantastic location in the heart of Barcelona. We are two older women traveling together. Booked the lowest priced double and was upgraded to a view of the cathedral and plaza below our 3rd floor window/balcony. The plaza was full of holiday vender stalls and a lot of activity. Had some concern about noise but when we close the balcony doors our room was quiet and very comfortable. Good beds and space in the room. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Common areas were clean and very well maintained. Breakfast buffet was a little expensive but offered a wide variety to choose from with excellent service and was very good. Great location across the plaza from the old cathedral. Just a few minutes walk to La Rambla. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Barcelona is a beautiful city and this hotel made our stay most enjoyable.

A well located hotel in the Gothic Quarter where we had a lovely stay, good sized room and bathroom.Good view of the Cathedral from our 5th floor room, pity half of it is covered in scaffold.Carpet was a little dirty but this is our only minus point.1 or 2 staff a little offhand but mostly very pleasant and helpful. The hotel is surrounded by small restaurants in the side streets so plenty of places to eat from cheap to expensive.Big plus point is the short distance to walk to Las Ramblas the main Plaza and the beach.

Could not have picked a better place. Location right next to the cathedral is excellent, very close to La Rambla and easy to get to the beach. The room was perhaps a bit smaller than expected, but for one person was still easily big enough, and along with the bathroom was very clean. My room was at the back of the building overlooking a lane with the occassional noisy moped, but closing the windows effectively blocked out any noise and the building itself was very quiet. I highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again the next time I visit Barcelona!

Very spacious and comfortable room. Young American bellman was the best employee we encountered---friendly, competent and professional. Some of the other front desk personnel a bit on the chilly side, with one actually chasing my travel companion out the front door the morning of checkout because he thought she was leaving without paying. (I had already paid the bill and was talking with the bellman outside the front door.) The hotel is within walking distance from the airport bus stop at Plaza Catalunya---about 2 and 1/2 blocks, but on a pedestrian-only street. Starbucks for morning coffee is one block away, and with Barcelona prices, it's a good place for breakfast. Hotel is conveniently close to the Ramblas, the excellent and user-friendly Metro as well as many restaurants. With traffic being heavy all the time, use the Metro to get to landmarks such as Familia Sagadra Cathedral Casa Mila, both "don't miss" places to visit. I would definitely stay at this hotel again due to location and quality of rooms.

overall an excellent hotel. I had one of the rooms at the back of the hotel without the view which would normally be fine since they are usually the quietest, however the hotel was renovating on the floor above me which was a problem. The hotel provided me with complimentary breakfast as compensation for the disruption, I thought that was quite adequate. The hotel location can not be faulted, the staff were friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and would most certainly stay there again. Wireless internet access cost 10 euro for 24 hours.. however if you have a wireless network detector (the type that hangs off your keyring) you can easily find free access in the bars around the hotel.. just ask.

I stayed at Colon Hotel twice - 4 nights total. Rooms are very clean and tidy. Though the carpets are a bit dated. But hey you will not be sleeping on the carpet so it hardly matters! Location is best in all of Barcelona. Walking distance to Las Rambalas, Catalunya Square, and all the best shopping areas. Rates offered on website do not advertise whether inclusive of breakfast or not. But there is a Starbucks a stone throw away and quaint cafes on the Cathedral square as soon as you step out of the Hotel. Would stay at Colon when I visit again. Cheers !

great hotel in an excellent location. very helpful staff on reception. only complaint would be the very noisy maids. one even burst into my room without knocking at 8.30am whilst I was still asleep. bit early for cleaning, i'd say.

A very enjoyable break in Barcelona. Although paying the lowest rate advertised for a double room, we had a Cathedral view, although still covered in scaffolding, on the fifth floor. The Christmas Market in the plaza was in full swing from morning to night, but did not bother us. Staff were helpful when asked for anything and spoke much better English than our Spanish. We did not use the restuarant, but followed previous comments and breakfasted in the 2 cafes across the square, which both supplied an excellent cooked breakfast. Would definately use this hotel again, especially for its central location.

Very courteous staff; they speak English in reception (a plus for a short visit by someone who doesn't speak Spanish). Comfortable and secure (safe is provided free with room). Right in the courtyard facing the Barcelona Cathedral, you can easily walk to several places of interest including the Picasso Museum.

Splendid hotel, great location. Our room had a huge terrrace with plants, comfortable chairs and a view at the cathedral towers. Down at the square the hotel has a lovely terrace to meet friends and have a drink. Good service too; we ordered several taxis at the desk. Hotel Colon, we will be back.

Very nice hotel, in a wonderful place, in the hearth of the ancient city. Easy to reach from the Marina and from Playa Cataluna and close to the Metro station. The only thing I can say to a tourist is "watch the prices of the Veranda Bar" (expecially if you dine there).

This is a lovely and comfortable hotel and cathedral views fantastic (on 5th floor). I cannot fault the service and rooms and hotel is so central. Breakfast was great but also used the cafe opposite (as mentioned by previous visitor, thanks!) for a lighter start to the day. We did not eat there in the evening. Air con was good so a real relief on returning to our room. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Barcelona, though relatively expensive, you get what you paid for.

The convenience of the hotel's central location must be it's greatest selling point. In addition the staff were extremely pleasant and competent: the room spacious and clean. We would certainly recommend it.

The location was great, right across from the Cathedral. I was greeted with some skepticism - perhaps I did not appear like their "typical" guest? The room was nice, the TV was small, and a few lightbulbs did not work.

Great hotel brilliant location. The first room we had was too noisy at night, when we informed the staff we were moved to another room which was superb. We would use this hotel again and would recommend it to our friends. We had a wonderful time in Barcelona and this hotel was a major part of making it wonderful.

The hotel Colon is centrally located and within walking distance to many attractions and shopping. My wife and I are both retired and found it easy to get around without a car from this hotel. It is clean and the staff was very helpful. I would highly recommend the Colon for the quality/price it provides.

For any tourist trip you really want to make sure you're in the right location, and the Hotel Colon is ideally situated. Plus, the rooms are pretty nice and the staff is very helpful. The rates seem to vary quite a bit, but I found a double room (non-view) on venere.com for 105 euros, which I thought was a great deal. As of Dec 2005 the cathedral across the plaza is undergoing renovations, so I wouldn't spend the money for a view room.
