exterior The Country Hotel Veláni is a short drive from the traditional Cretan village of Avdou, close to the Lassithi Plateau. A perfect place to enjoy Crete horse riding holidays, this hotel is perched on the slopes of the beautiful Lagada Valley, looking over to the reddish peaks of the Dikti Mountains, where you can watch Griffon Vultures and other majestic birds of prey soar high above.

This countryside get-away is located in a vast estate, a real oasis of serenity where you can go hiking, bird watching, mountain climbing, caving, para-gliding and penetrate deep into the Lagada Valley on horse-riding treks. You will also be able to relax on the estate, swimming in the pools and tasting some genuine Cretan cuisine.

Built from the local stone, the hotel has a real rustic feel. In the main building, there is a romantic bar with a panoramic balcony, and a restaurant with a large terrace. Last but not least, there is an equestrian centre, The Odysseia Stables, which provides excellent riding facilities, good horses and lessons for all levels.

By airplane
From Heraklion Kazantzakis International Airport: follow the signs to the national highway in the direction of Agios Nikolaos. Stay on the highway for about 25 km (15.5 miles). Take the exit to Chersonissos, Kastelli and the Lassithi Plateau. At the end of the exit, turn right in the direction of the Lassithi Plateau. Follow the road and pass the golf course. After the golf course, the road splits in two; here you continue straight and follow signs for the Lassithi Plateau. You will cross the villages of Potamies and Sfendili. The next village is Avdou. In Avdou, you follow the signs for the Odysseia Stables. The sign will tell you to turn right, straight after The Avdou Restaurant. This turn also has a big blue sign saying Agia Fotienie and Cave. Follow this sign too. After Avdou Villas, the road becomes an unsurfaced road. Follow the signs for Odysseia Stables or Agia Fotinie. Do not worry about driving up the steep and unsurfaced road for the last 2 km (1.2 miles), as any car can reach the hotel. You will drive underneath electricity cables; these go to the hotel, so just follow them.

There are a number of double rooms located on the ground floor, the Grand Comfort Rooms, which are made up of a large bedroom, bathroom and a terrace, separated by a glass door.

For groups of 3 people, there are a series of first-floor rooms, called Panorama Rooms. These have a bedroom, a large balcony, a separate toilette and a big bathroom with a bathtub and a shower cabin. Finally, if you are a larger group, you can choose a Family Room.
