On arrival the hotel appeared to be empty; no activity in the reception area. Our welcome was a little cold (could have been a language issue - my french is poor to say the least). The room was clean but small and it was noisy, being on the street front. The bar was never open although it was highlighted on the website. The breakfast area was quite stark. It appears it is used by a lot of bus trips and when they are not around the hotel is quite deserted and feels unfriendly. We decided to try the 'fine dining' restuarant on our first evening and were very disappointed. A lot of 'pomp' but the food doesn't come up to the mark. I personally wouldn't stay there again, although I couldn't see a lot of options in Auxerre.

One of the best 3 star hotels we have ever stayed in - beautiful setting right on the river, tasteful and clean room and very helpful and frendly staff. Any road noise is well screened off by the double glass doors to the balcony.

After a friendly reception, it was easy to settle in at La Maxime. The location was very convenient and with a pleasant river view, although somewhat different from the image projected in photographs and descriptions, which gave no idea of the busy and noisy traffic passing right under the room window.

Welcoming, helpful staff. Hotel was a bit more than we would normally spend, and we felt others in the area that were less expensive would have been just as nice. Would be nicer in warm weather with riverfront more active.

The only comment I have is this: the town of Auxerre is at once both lovely and exceedingly difficult to navigate by auto - especially to foriegn drivers. The town does have a periphic of sorts - had I known that before hand it would have made finding the hotel far easier than it ended up being. The hotel would do well to have someone modifiy their location instructions in a manner that would be more accessible to an english speaking audience.

A good quality central hotel - close to sights and shops and the river. The brasserie in the 'cave' is good food and good atmosphere. Recommended for overnight or longer stay.

Le Maxime and the town of Auxerre are both delightful. Hotel is located on bank of river, and close to charming old town center. It is a genuine French 4-star, with none of the horrors of chain hotels and all the charm of 1st class French hotels in the past.

We were very pleased with LeMaxime. It was the best hotel value and location of any in our 2 weeks in France. We changed to a room with a river view, which we enjoyed, however, if you want quiet, you would want a room at the back instead, since the street next to the river is very noisy. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.
