STAFF Pleasant and competent. LOBBY Once you get through the 8-meter corridor from the street, the lobby is a nice surprise: spacious, well lighted, with comfortable seating and one internet terminal. ROOM Ours had a balcony to the courtyard, great mattresses (firm and flat), good shower. However, the shower curtain positioned at the edge of the pan ensured a wet floor and shower mat. Management, please move the shower-curtain rail 10 cm into the shower space and the floor should remain dry! NEIGHBORHOOD OMG! The street and the immediate surroundings are inhabited day and night by dubious characters. We were fully forewarned by comment from tourists at Venere.com. Yet, on our fist steps outside the hotel at 17:00, my mobile/cell phone was stolen from my shoulder bag before we had reached the corner of the block. (First theft in 30 years of vacationing in Greece!) Then followed a search for a pay phone to cancel the phone number with my home-country provider, a search for a police station to make a declaration, and the last three days in Greece without my phone. BREAKFAST Consists of dismal industrialized food – orange juice, cornflakes, bread, cheese cuts, meat cuts, boiled eggs, jam... the eternal problem with breakfast at entry-level hotels. (Where breakfast is optional, I eat outside (spinach pie, for example!). SAFE FOR VALUABLES No in-room safe but, for a nominal daily fee, reception provides the key to a small personal safe (there are some 30 of them) built into a closet in the lobby.

The hotel is located in a very bad neighbourhood, we felt very unsafe walking in the surroundings. The breakfast was very poor, and the noise from the street was very loud, which made it impossible to have a good night sleep.

Located near the Omonia square and the subway, the hotel seems to be a good and economic choice. The neighbourhood though, is not nice. The people who hang out there make you want to return to the hotel early in the evening. The room was adequate, not very recently redecorated, but quiet and with a nice bathroom. Breakfast included. Not expensive but not a place I would return to.

I stayed only 2 days.Thw fact is that the whole area surround is occupated by immigrants and drug addicts. So i didn't feel safe at all on my comming or lefting the hotel. Also breakfast was poor. As about clientele i think that Marina Hotel caters to rassing through customers, who dont know the area.

It's located in a rougher area of Athens. I didn't feel that the area was that bad, but I can understand how some women may feel uncomfortable. The location is still very convenient to most things in the Athens. The metro station is an easy walk from the hotel. Will take you very close to the Acropolis and other sites. The room we had was very large with a huge balcony. That aspect was nice. The beds were not very comfortable and there were mosquitoes. The guy at the front desk was extremely short and harsh. We were very scared to approach him with any questions because he was so unfriendly. The internet there is not free, which really seems silly. 2 euro for first 30 mins or 3 euro for an hour. Around the corner from the hotel is an internet cafe, less than 1 full block away, and is 1 euro per hour with Skype and everything. Athens is in a trial test phase for public wifi, so there are certain areas where you can access free wifi with your palm/iphone/laptop.

Very nice staff. Very clean rooms and nice shower. Rooms cleaned every day and clean towels every day too. Very good breakfast to keep you going all day long. Hotel centrally situated within walking distance from the city centre and the major spots. Besides they offered us to switch rooms if we were not satisfied with ours, which was rather nice and unexpected. Some people may be put off by the surroundings that look a bit shaby but the area is quite safe even at night. I would recommend this hotel warmly.

The sourrounding area of the hotel is a little bit asocial and dirty. But the hotel is clean, the rooms have a lot of spce and I van recommend zhis hotel for a stay in Athens. The hotel is quite near to the Omonia plae and you can reach all points of intereste very good be foot or by metro. The relation ürice vs. quality is very good.

Very reasonably-priced central accommodation in Athens. Close to main areas and subway stations. The hotel is located on a quiet darkish side street so we were glad to see a very nice bright reception on our arrival. The rooms were very clean. Breakfast was nice. Staff could be a little bit more friendly but overall had a very nice pleasant here.

The hotel is excellent value for money. You get a decent and spotless hotel for a reasonable price. The donwturn is the area in which the hotel is located, near Omonia Sq. The neighborhood is poor and dirty, and the the people in that area, most of the time looked dodgy. It needs to be said that we walked from Omonia sq, to the hotel at 2am in the morning, and nothing happened to us. So if you can tolerate the surroundings, the hotel is very close to the main attractions, and it's very good value for money. The rooms are not very spacious, but they are clean. The bathroom was very clean and it had a decent size. Breakfast is poor. We didn't have much contact with the staff of the hotel, but they were friendly and helpful. We couldn't pay with credit card since the machine was broken (or so they say).

The hotel was adequate. The rooms were clean but rather small and crowded. The bathroom was also cramped. The breakfast was ok but nothing special. The hotel is borderline 3 star (maybe a 2plus). The proximity to the Metro was very good but the neighborhood around the hotel is less than desireable. There was a mix-up as to whether the hotel allows pets. We booked the hotel stating that we would have a pet with us but when we checked in we were told pets were not allowed. We managed to kepp our dog with us but she had to stay in her portable the kennel for the entire stay (3 days).
United Kingdom, May 2008
The advert said that we were close to the Acropolis which was completely untrue. We were also warned by several taxi drivers that we were in a very bad area and needed to be careful. We did see numerous drug exchanges and were propositioned severaltimes whilst walking in the day. As 2 girls travelling i feel the web site should have warned us about this. Inside the hotel is nice but i wouldn't recommend it due to the area

Our overall stay at Marina was fantastic, The price of the hotel and being so close to the metro was great and if you like you can even walk to plaka at a leisurely pace in 20 minutes. The hotel was very nice to my 18 month daughter and even gave her a little toy =) Now I read some of the other reviews and some commented on the nearby surroundings of the hotel...I did not see any drug addicts or prostitutes as some quoted and honestly I think they confused them for the immigrants that live there. The immigrants were mainly from Pakistan and Arab countries and were just looking for work, nobody was begging or hassling for money. Marina was overall a great place and I would definately come back when in Athens again although the breakfast could be a little better.

It was a bit of a shock to find the hotel when we arrived, as we approached the hotel from the wrong end of the street (Zinonos ), as it turned out later. Hotel Marina is a five minute walk from Omonia square underground station. Make sure you walk down Pireos street rather than any other street nearby. The hotel is located in its side street, a rather dirty one with a bus terminal almost opposite the entrance. But for all that, the hotel is an altogether different world in the shabby surroundings. Go through the narrow entrance (once you manage to find it), and you will be in a neatly refurbished lobby. Front office staff is extremely helpful. The rooms overlook either the back yard, which is not a pleasant sight, or the noisy street (even worse a sight). Rooms may also have a view of nowhere, when you do have a window but it is covered with non-transparent wallpaper. The rooms were tiny but clean, the bathroom was fairly large compared to the size of the room. Towels were changed daily. It was apparent that the hotel has recently been refurbished. The breakfast was rather poor: undrinkable coffee, and self-service continental breakfast. All in all, this is a clean budget hotel with good public transportation. It is definitely a different experience from my first visit to Athens when I sateyed at the Astir Palace, but if you go for fairly central location, low prices, and have no high expectations, Hotel Marina is a good choice.

We liked the hotel and its service, but the surroundings were not very pleasant. It was very close to one of the main squares, but the street leading to the hotel was a bit scary. One wouldn't dare to leave the hotel at night because of groups of strangely looking guys. But the hotel inside was really fantastic, quite a shock after walking down the street. We didn't really like the location of our room with its windows facing the yard inside / well-shaped yard. Because of that we didn't have much fresh air in our room, and not even a bit of sunshine, so we couldn't say what time of day it was. The room was not very spacious, but the bathroom was big and very comfortable, although the floor was too slippery. We really appreciated the breakfast, continental one, but it made a good start to the day. Generally, it was very fine and we would recommend the place without any hesitation. The employees were very caring and extremely helpful. The room was cleaned every day and even towels were exchanged when needed.

A bit hard to find in the side streets. Very spacious/clean. Friendly. ElevatorS a big plus. Excellent value for money. Good, ample breakfast. Pleasant staff. At certain times the street activity is a little daunting but then there is a definite police presence and nothing scary happen. (The only minor drawback.) And you are a few bocks from upscale Omonia and subway and other ritzy sites. Totally crisp and clean; room sl. small but functional. We totally recommend. Folk dance group passing thru in costume at breakfast a plus.

The quarter is really decadent and dangerous but it is central! The room was so small that lagguages could be opened only on the bed! The breakfast in the hotel is close to be sufficient but the orange juice is a joke! Molte zanzare! The main drawback in the room is the shower. The floor basin doesn't fit the lateral walls, so the water leaks out from the walls to the floor and wets all pavement. A single pavement towel is not enough to dry it and this means you have to step in a wet foor all the night. A fitted box will be a good improvement (this counted for the 'cleanliness' of the room, otherwise good). The surrounding of the hotel are somewhat 'dark' and full of street commerce by immigrants. I didn´t feel unsafe in the zone, but this can cause disconfort to other travellers.

For this price one cannot really ask for more - a clean room and proper room service. If I paid pay another 10 euros a night on top of what I had, I would suggest to have a proper lift going up the floors and a more decent breakfast (eg. the orange juice is a joke). The experience somewhat resembles flying with Ryanair - you have the decent service for a cheap price, so long as you don't expect anything else (that includes having a telly in the room with the remote missing!!). The area does look a bit rundown but didn't see any problems at all in the 2 days of stay. And it's close to Omonia Station. It's a good base if you want to see a bit of what local Athenians do in their lives!

Reasonable hotel for Athens at the price. The location is not pleasant - the square is rough and a little threatening. The bathroom was spacious, but as per usual the shower head had to be held.

The quality of the room and bathroom were good, with a comfortable double bed. However there was a lightswitch in the bathroom which was pulled out of the wall with the wires exposed which I thought was very dangerous. Also the area of Athens the hotel is located in is fairly well located for the metro but is very unsavoury late at night. If you want to go out during the day and stay in at night then I would recommend this hotel. However if you plan to go out partying and then return home late at night, I wouldn't recommend it as even with four of us (including 2 men) we felt very nervous trying to walk back through these streets full of dodgy people in the late evenings (no sign of the dodgy people during the daylight hours though).

The room was clean and quiet, but it was twin beds instaed of a double bed, and when we asked for a double bed, we were told that they were smaller, and then we asked to see them anyway, there were in fact only 4 of them and they were occupied. Besides, the neighbourhood is a bit scary, even if apparently safe. That being said, it's close to the place Omonia (metro station and restaurants), at a walking distance from Plaka (tourist area and accropole).

The smalest hotel room I've ever stayed in. None of the wardrobes or cupboards could be opened without moving the bed. That said, it was what I expected for the price and I was happy with overall value for money and will stay again. Clean, relaxing room and convenient location for me. The area is "interesting" but safe - far better than staying in a 'sterile' tourist area - something happening all day and all night. There is a convenience store just across the road which stocks everything, is not too expensive and opens late. Omonia square is a 3 or 4 minute walk away but check on the map - this place could be difficult to find if you've never been before and get easily disoriented. Breakfast was OK but nothing to write home about.

The street is smelly and dirty, it is in the Indian-quarter of the city. But this is not the biggest problem. Our rooms looked at a dark wall of another house, just 2 meters from the hotel. The room is big enough, but the window is so small, so we had to turn on the lights during the day.. 'The rooms are tastefully decorated with modern furnishings and feature private balconies or terraces which enjoy city views.' - forget about this one... And the photos at the site also. It is newly renovated, that's true, but they still have problems with cleanliness, the first thing we saw in front of our door was a huge cockroach. In one word it was depressing, luckily we really just slept there... :-)

The MARINA is a good choice for a short stay in Athens, especially if you are transferring to a ferry in the morning as the metro is close and its on a direct line to Pirares. The area is not the best but we moved around without being bothered at all and found a splended meal choice in Theatrou Square close by. Good value for money.

Hotel MARINA is "5 star" hotel in a very poor area.I was alone and sometimes I didn't feel pleasant to go back to hotel at night, but area mostly populated by hard-working emigrants and they are harmless. Hotel is very nice and clean, nice breakfast, helpful staff.

The hotel is clean enough, warm enough and comfortable enough. The price's good. Breakfast's a bit poor in both quality and quantity. Despite some comments I read in this web site I must say that the neighbourhood is not dangerous at all. The hotel is 1 minute from a main street that leads to Omonia Square in 2 more minutes. However, the neighbourhood is just typical Greek: cheap shops, bars where you can taste the real gyros for half the price than you would in the touristic areas. Its population is quite diverse: greeks, asians, north-africans... My wife and I enjoyed these lively streets both by day and night.

Hotel was located by train station and was very convenient to all tourist spots by the subway. Clean hotel - no complaints - great price. Would stay here again.

We are very satisfied with our choice of hotel for our stay in Athens. We wanted a hotel that suited our budget, which we got, but also experienced friendliness, competence and helpfulness of the staff. They went out of their way to help us when we extended our stay and they were fully booked. They arranged accommodation at a good quality hotel nearby and accommodates us as soo as was possible for the remainder of our stay. The hotel is within walking distance of all the major tourist attractions, bus routes and the metro. There is a very convenient supermarket - Champion Stores near Omonia square in Athina street. The area between Omonia and the hotel was not as dingy as we expected from reports we read. We never felt unsafe ot threatened, even late at night. We had a lovely stay and would surely use Hotel Marina in future. This is the second time that we used a hotel using Venere.com. We can recommend the accommodation they promote on their website.

I was disappointed that I had to ask on 2 evenings for an extra towel for the bathroom. The fridge in the room needed cleaned and I had to let the concierge know that only 1 lamp was working

it's a very noisy and ugly street. The hôtel would gain to install extra windows and to améliorate the facade. We also endured a lot of black-beetles in yhe room and the bathroom.

Omonia - where the hotel is located - is not the best area of the city. Parking is only available in nearby parking space for 11€/car and night. Hotel staff behaved neither very friendly nor client oriented.

The best hotel that we stayed in during our europe visit. The area as noted in other reviews is a bit shady but once you're in the hotel it is a real value for the money. Room was spacious and clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Would stay there again.

You get what you pay for... In my case, the hotel clerk had double-assigned my room. A group of women opened the door to my surprise while I was in bed, which I'm sure startled them as well. Oh well... Bottom line is I would not stay at this property again.

Had a very enjoyable stay. We arrived very late, and had a very friendly welcome from the guy at the check in desk. Appreciated the fact that there was facility to store our luggage after check out.

The hotel is close to metro station (Omonia) and short distance to Plaka and Monastiraki. The room was clean and well sized with air conditioned, TV, hair drier,a small balcony and very confortable beds, breakfest was ok. The only bad aspect is the surrounding area. A old quarter used for imigrants from Africa and Asia with a lot of low budget shops. There is a bus stop in front the hotel. There are more than 50 hotels in around Omonia Square, maybe some of then are cheaper and better but Marina Hotel was ok, if you want a clean and confortable room Marina Hotel is good choice

The hotel is well located 3 mins from metro and a large number of restaurants. Breakfast was simple but nice and the air-con makes all the difference.

Marina Hotel was very well located for those who want to visit the important sites of Athens. Small rooms but very clean and a good breakfast in a nice room was well appreciated.

Travelling through Athens I didn't have any real need for somewhere to call home, just a decent bed. This hotel is tucked away on the edge of a scruffy part of central Athens, not that pleasent to get to, but once you are inside its all ok. Breakfast was simple continental fare. I appreciated the ease of the hotel so much that I used it again on my return.

It would be better to indicate the street by helping per Omonia Square's map : taxi drivers seem to ignore this street... Thanks a lot for your welcomming, see you soon. Elisabeth Kerleau - France

An address to stay in Athens for 2/3 days. Welcoming staff and good breakfast. Some streets around were not very "comfortable" but safe (prostitution and probably deal of drug, but a high presence of policemen). A plus : a parking and oil station - 50 m walk. Honest price, friendly people giving good advices and taking care to the car.

Great priced property in a very good location for the tourist areas of Athens. Easy access to Metro. Area that this hotel is situated in of a night time isnt the greatest but this had minimal impact on our stay.
