I refused the first room they offered because it was so small and you had to sit under the sink to go to the bathroom, it was also cold and dark and the person at reception was rude. They did end up giving us a better room and the blond haired lady was very nice.

Very nice located hotel. Not beside the main Saint Francis' historical hot spots, but close to San RUfino and Santa Chiara churches. Actually Assissi is a wonderful city to endenvour around by foot, and the hotel is kind of in the geographical center os the town. The room is very simple, mainly because the tourism i this area is religiously based. The atmosphere and the way business is run is very familiar, so everybody know everybody and this is kind of neat. The one thing that could bother one a bit is the loud sound of the scooters driven during the night but the young ones. The bell tower of the next door San Rufino church is kind of loud and goes off at 7 am, but this would be a very convenient time for one to wake up to enjoy the surroundings as much as possible.

Great hotel for the price. The room and hotel were spotlessly clean. The baths were a little smelly when we got there, and I think its a combination of poor ventilation and the drainage system and and we left the windows open and it cleared up. We stayed at the rooms in the Il Duomo sister facility and the path that leads to the hotel also leads up to the castle. The views from the room and the castle are amazing. The noise levels are a bit high especially at night when the restaurant below seems to load some kind of heavy oven every night into a truck. You can watch the sun rise over the hills in the morning from the hotel room window. Overall great room for the price.

Great location, good service, very clean. There was a kitchen we could have used if we could have got the gas cooker working. Assissi is gorgeous - and the hotel was very handy. I think they messed up our booking and we were actually accommodated in Il Duomo nextdoor. The only negative was there was no air con and if you had the window open, we were kept awake by the noise from the restaurant below. Otherwise, a great place to stay.

We had the same experience as many of the other people on here. We get to the hotel and the woman at the front desk says, "Umm, we have a problem." Yep, they overbooked and sent us down the street to another hotel. It was ok, probably the same type room for the same price (55 Euro). The room was clean and very quiet. We felt safe, as we went to bed one evening and didn't realize we hadn't shut our door all the way. No one even tried to enter our room. Assisi is wonderful, especially after being in Rome. I would recommend everyone spend at least one night in this wonderful town.

The hotel was excellent and perfectly located. The staff were very helpful. The breakfast was somewhat to be desired, with only cheeses and no meats, but still plentful. Sites and getting around Assisi was difficult for seniors because of the hilly walk ways, but you could not beat the history involved. Parking is a problem, but there is a hotel discount at the main square parking area...cost about 10. euros per day after discount and is a 5 min. walk from hotel. All in all would stay again at the San Rufino.

We have stayed in Assisi some 6 times and used this hotel and it's associated Albergo 3 times. It's our favourite place to stay in Assisi as it's near the top end of Assisi near the town square and away from the busy tourist area close to the Church of St Francis. Sadly it's not always easy to get a booking here.

Assisi itself is a very charming and unique towns and would be one of my most loved places in Italy. I traveled with my father who is Italian, but I communicated quite easily with the staff in English. Hotel San Rufino is a short walk from the bus stop, and it's just a couple of doors down from a nice cafe with internet access. I could sit there comfortably with my own computer and enjoy free wireless with a good quality coffee. The breakfast was one of the best we had during our month long tour of Italy - a nice variety of fresh foods were available each morning at a very reasonable price. The nearby restaurants serve great Italian style food, but no restaurant is too far a walk away in this little town. If I am fortunate enough to visit Assisi again,I wold certainly stay at San Rufino.

San Rufino was just as advertised. The Staff was personable. With our broken Italian and thier broken English, we were still able to communicate. They called cab's for us the the driver (Paulo) was the best! Assisi turned out to be our favorite place in Italy. We wish we had stayed for more than 2 days. You need to be in shape to do the walking up and down hills as there are many. The breakfast was VERY good.We have nothing but good things to say about our stay at San Rufino. We will recommend it to others. We stayed in room 6 and the room and the bathroom were huge. It gets a 10 for cleanliness as well, and the towels are wonderful and plentiful. Obviously we were very pleased with our stay.

Sited near the Duomo of San Rufino the hotel can provide you with a discount card for the local car park. I actually stayed in the building round the corner which is part of the same outfit. The hotel is in a typical narrow street and is like many of the buildings in Assisi. It was all very attractive. The room was not very quiet because the way up to the castle was right outside my window and also there was a bar downstairs and it was too hot to sleep with the window shut. Nothing, however, that my trusty earplugs couldn't deal with! It was a very pleasant place to say, very convenient for everything in Assisi and the staff were helpful. Some fruit at breakfast would have been nice.

Assisi was our last stop in this very special spiritual trip. We started in Nantes, France, with Dalai Lama. Then we went to Nottingham, UK, to join a retreat with Thich Nhat Hanh. Ending in Assisi with St. Francis e St. Claire. Absolutly magic!! The hotel was more than perfect for our needs. The room (#2)was really big! The breakfast was really tastefull with choises of coffee. And we used to go visit the city and between one point and another we used to stop by the hotel to use the toilet and keep on the journey. The hotel is well located, specially if you like to walk to get to know the city! For us was realy perfect!

We booked the Duomo ensuite room, but slept in Hotel Rufino in the end. The Duomo room was actually spacious and lovely, even come with a fire place. But around 11:30pm arrived 7 or 8 Italian teeagers, occupying all the other rooms in the hotel, and our nightmare began. They shouted, chasing in the hallway, making all sorts of noices. We tried to communicate with them, but until 1 am we were still up sleeples because of the noice. We had no choice but to call the reception. Thanks to this young man, we were put in another room in Hotel Rufino immediately. The problem with Hotel il Duomo is that the walls are too thin, you can hear all the noise from other rooms with echo.

When we arrived at the hotel we were delayed for an English-speaking employee, and she assigned room #3 although there were multiple rooms open. Our room was a small, twin-bedded room with a "uni-bath" and a window that opened to a gardening shed filled with equipment. We asked to exchange rooms for one with a window that opened to fresh air and were given room #10. (the exact same as room #3, but one floor up from the garden shed). We were charged the maximum possible amount, but were given the lowest quality room even though the hotel was not full. We tried to pay the bill via American Express (their logo was on the door) however we were informed they do not accept AMEX. By the time we checked out the next day, the AMEX sign was taped over, and our Visa card had been billed without our knowledge (including a breakfast we did not have). Additionally, We were left with 1/4 roll of toilet paper without an extra, so in the middle of the night, we had to make our way to the lobby bathroom to forrage for toilet paper. Wonderful city, great area, EXTREMELY disappointing hotel.

The woman at the front desk (long dark hair) was so rude to us and some other guests. I cant believe she works in hospitality. Despite this, we do like the San Rufino as it is a good value. We have stayed here before - accomodations are basic but clean. We stayed in room 11 I think across from the elevator and it was like a cave no windows only skylight. It was not that comfortable. The max rate according to the sign on the wall was 10E less than what we paid. We had friends who did not book prior to arriving and stayed in a woman's home and got a better rate, we decided next time we would do that.

We arrived at San Rufino early (at noon time) and they nicely offered us our room right away even though they were completely booked and busy and we we just hoping to leave our luggage there. The husband who checked us in spoke English, but the 2-3 others, including his wife had just enough English for us to communicate. They gave us a coupon for a nearby car park which was both handy and gave us a good discount on parking. The hotel location was great. We could walk to all the sites in town. The furthest we walked was about 15-20 minutes across town. They don't have a computer in the lobby nor wifi, but about 2 doors over there is a cafe that offers that for free if you buy a coffee or something. My husband used it successfully. Our room had a beautiful view of landscaped gardens of the neighbors out the back. It was quite a bargain for the money. The room was very functional, not fancy at all, but very clean. The bathroom worked well, but the shower wasn't a stall, more like it was a shower head and drain divided off by a shower curtain on each side. The elevator worked well and there were convenient stairs, too. We paid the extra 5 euros each/day for the breakfast in a room off the lobby and definitely got our money's worth with cereal, toast, breads, pastries, juice, coffee, tea, cheese. They have a small bar tucked in the back of the lobby which we didn't use, but was available. We saw all age groups of people there. It is a relatively small hotel so I doubt it could handle a large tour group. It was recommended by Rick Steve's guide book. I would recommend it to fellow travelers as a non-frills but very pleasant stay.

We booked for San Rufino, but were put into a place a few steps away, Il Duomo, which turned out to be just fine. Nice room. Great location. Around the corner is the little San Rufino cafe, where you can use the internet for free if you buy food or drink (bring a passport for ID). The staff and service there are good. The was a wonderful family-run trattoria around the OTHER corner, mom and grandma doing all the cooking. We had a delicious dinner there. I had the rabbit, guess what? Tastes like chicken! Definitely Italian "soul food", authentic home cooking. Assisi was a very special, spiritual place.

We loved our room and location of our hotel. While it was not near the main church, it was much quieter and on a quiet side street. We stayed in the annex, Albergo Il Duomo, and there was a small courtyard that was private and pleasant. Rooms were very clean, and generally quiet after folks settled in for the night and off of the street. Breakfast was worth the extra charge of 5 euros with good and tasty selections. Our only problem was that we neglected to take the bus to the top of Assisi and ended up walking from the bus stop at the bottom of the hill near the church. That wasn't the hotel's fault, just our lack of paying close attention. We would definitely stay there again, and we loved Assisi. We had a great dinner near the hotel at Trattoria da Erminio which is a family run restaurant. If you got the fixed-price dinner, it was a decent value and excellent. If you don't have that though, you will pay quite dearly for the service charge/coperto. It was very nice however.

This hotel is very convenient and chip according to the location. It is nearby the gates of the old city walls, so that you can penetrate with your car to drop your lugages and then live your car in a free parking, easy to find, the employees indicate. As the city center is not very extended, you can do everything by walk as long as you are healthy. We had a very large and clean room (could easily welcome 4 people) whith a view on the nice little street. The breakfast is very complete for only five euros / person more.

The Hotel is located in a lovely area, near the Church of San Rufino. The only problem is that it's hard to get to. The instructions on how to get there with a car aren't very clear. Made reservation for San Rufino but was put up at their sister hotel Il Duomo. I think it was base on the price paid, as the counter confirmed the price I was paying when I arrived. Room was very small and basic. bathroom was small but clean. breakfast was extra 5 Euros per person. Location was just beside San Rufino Basillica. Easiest way to find the hotel is to take orange Bus C from the train station and alight at the end stop (stop 15). First of all I must point out that the website offered a "Duomo room" in San Rufino Hotel (2 stars) while our room was in Duomo hotel (just one star, same owner, in front of San Rufino htl but with no reception). Anyway our room was clean and quite spacious even if walls are very thin and you can ear everything from the corridor and the room close to yours. Our experience is definitely positive: very good relatioship quality/price, situated inside the ancient walls of Assisi.

Nice location, it was clean, quiet and we had a good night sleep. Our room had good heat on a very cold night. Breakfast is not included in the price, and doesn't serve until after 8 AM, which was too late for us.

Siamo stati 3 notti a San Rufino: hotel carino e silenzioso.

Grazie

The hotel was fine and very convenient. Our biggest problem was noise from another family above our room that went on all hours of the night...laughing, talking, children jumping, furniture moving. It was terrible. There is no one at the desk after 10 p.m. to ask to intervene. Walls are very thin. But, this could happen in almost any hotel. We would stay again, just make sure there is a policy in place about what to do in this type of situation. Breakfast was average.

We were actually placed in the Il Duomo apartments...about 30 meters up the hill, but that was a nice change. The rooms were 'rustic,' but fine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at San Rufino hotel. It was one of the nicest and most affordable hotels we stayed in in all of Europe. The location could not have been better because it is in the heart of Assisi. We enjoyed looking out our windows and seeing the old buildings around us. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. After a long drive, it was exactly what we needed. The staff was excellent. They allowed us to keep our baggage near the front desk so we could tour Assisi after our check out time. They could not have been more accomodating. I will recommend it to everyone who travels to Assisi

Room was clean, comfortable and quiet in a lovely neighborhood. They did not provide directions from bus station as other hotels do so I spent time finding it. When I checked in I asked in breakfast was included and woman said no that would cost $10 more so I didn't feel "invited" and decided to go out for breakfast. Later, when I tried to ask which bus to take, she kept saying "finish" over and over so I gave up and found my way around without help. In future, I would find a hotel with friendlier employees even tho everything else was fine. As to landmarks, the ones in Assisi are obvious; this hotel is just across the street from the Basilica of San Rufino, very beautiful. You can walk everywhere here but the bus works find once you find how it runs.
Netherlands, Sep 2007
The location is excellent, but the room was smaller than expected. But I enjoyed my stay in the hart of Assisi very much. It's easier to find something to eat or drink in the evening, than a stay in S.M. degli Angeli.Surely for just a short visit 3 day's. But public transport is very good, you can get easily by bus to the trainstation to visit other beautiful towns in Umbria. I like Assisi vry much because of the quietness there in the evenings. And I surely recommend San Rufino.

Great location, but a lot of Assisi is under construction right now. Our room faced the street and due to being right adjacent to the piazza it was incredibly loud. The door was made of glass, and the hallways are tiled so sound from the front desk including the TV on very early in the morning was very loud in the room. The room was very large and the bathroom was huge (but the shower was tiny). The towels were very thin and sort of seemed like tablecloths, but we encountered this in several hotels in Italy. The father of the family owning the hotel does not speak English but was happy to call his son to come over and help us check in.

If you are only in Assisi to visit the Basilica of St Francis this may not be the hotel for you because it is a good walk up the hill from there but it is very well located for experiencing other aspects of Assisi. It is off a little piazza if front of San Rufino, which happens to be the cathedral of Assisi, a block or two downhill from the Piazza Comunale and another short walk downhill to Santa Chiara. The neighborhood is charming and medieval yet very clean and well maintained. We could drive our car to drop off the luggage right at the door. Parking was available at the big Piazzo Mazzeoti parking lot nearby. You could walk any direction without fear of getting lost because P. San Rufino is apparently,an important destination in Assisi. The room was tiny but looked out at the bell tower of San Rufino and a neighbors courtyard. Rooms are small and decor is lacking but it was clean and the bed was very comfortable and the shower pressure was great. You have to turn hallway lights on yourself or find your way in the dark and let yourself in after 11pm and before 8am but that was ok for us for that price. We were able to stay two nights when we had been informed by Venere that the second night there was no availability.

Though we made a reservation 2 weeks ago, our room was very small and dark. I was unpleasant because a couple, who don't have a reservation and talked with the receptionist before us, got a large room (a room of a photograph) with the same price. I was disappointed at correspondence of the staff. We couldn't sleep soon because young people made noise for few hours at night in the lobby. But anyway a location was good and Assisi was beautiful, too.

We were more than pleased with our stay at the Hotel San Rufino in the spectacularly beautiful, ancient town of Assisi. Our room (#6, a triple) was quite large and, while somewhat stark by U.S. standards, very nicely appointed with extra seating and a nice, big clean bathroom (with a really great, comfy shower :D) !!! The San Rufino is right in the heart of the old city...we were so very impressed with Assisi's beauty and history and old world charm. A highly recommended stop all around!

This is a fantastic hotel - perfectly situated, spacious and comfortable rooms, and top value for money. I would highly recommend it and will definitely stay there again on my next visit to Assisi. There were a number of excellent restaurants nearby.

The castle is a wonderful visit and the hotel location is very convenient. The room was nice with a romantic bathroom. The only problem was the noise from the pedestrians and the restaurant on the street below our window.

If traveling by train please note that the train station in Assisi is outside of town and requires you to take a very short bus ride to town. The location is fantastic from the bus stop (but make sure there is no construction blocking the walk as we had to make some detours which didn't take too long but was a bit difficult luggage 4 pieces of luggage over cobble stones.) WHATEVER YOU DO . . .DO NOT ACCEPT ROOM 7 or most likely room 3 or 11 (as they are in the same line). As there is no airconditioning at the hotel and it was the hot summer time, we needed to keep our windows open during the evening. What we got was an entire evening of the baby next door crying (as they too had to keep their windows open all evening) but what can you do about a baby. What was really horrible was the fact that the room across the hall (and across the small courtyard . .same room) had a window in their bathroom (which was also kept open all evening) so during the course of the evening I heard a family of four going to the bathroom and flushing. It was louder than the one in our own room (which by the way was the worst bathroom I have ever seen in a hotel. . .you could barely stand up straight to brush your teeth without standing in the shower). I now more about the bodily functions of people I have never met than I care to. But Assisi is wonderful. We would highly recommend the town but unless you get a better room and #7 I would skip the San Rufino.

We both had a wonderful stay. The hotel was in a perfect location enabling you to walk anywhere in Assisi. Also close to the bus stop - which we took to Perugia (for the Jazz Festival), cheap and frequent except the last bus back is at 20.05pm so couldn't stay late unless you get a taxi. We would highly recommend a visit to Assisi - beautiful views, narrow medieval streets and very clean! It cost about 25 euros by taxi from the airport.

Service was good, location was good, only drawback is that room entrance is on a semi-steep small hill, so if you have heavy luggage this can be taxing. Location is nearby bus station where service runs on the dot. Town is beautiful so hotel goes in line with it. Room was very spacious, immaculate, shower is in the middle of the bathroom, so this can be a problem because our bathroom flooded somewhat once. We were also unable to check out of the room properly because we had to leave early the next morning (6:30 a.m.) and the hotel staff was nowhere to be found - I think they have 8 - 9 hotel hours, which was very strange to me. Overall experience for one night was good, family runs restaurant nearby and there is an excellent restaurant next door, which serves home-cooked style meals at very reasonable prices. I recommend hotel and would return myself.

I was very disappointed to discover that although we had booked the San Rufino hotel that when we arrived they walked us up the hill to a less conveniently located hotel called La Rocca. We had booked many months in advance and this was not acceptable. If you book a specific hotel, you should be staying in the same hotel not being shipped off to a worse one.

Not only was it the cheapest stay we found but also the best. Nice, spacious, well-equipped room, helpful staff, and great location. Assisi was a great stop and resting point after sight-seeing in Rome.

The breakfast is GREAT here. GREAT VALUE all around. Excellent location. Only trouble was the renovations on the streets outside, but this could happen anywhere. Excellent friendly helpful staff. Would definately stay again if we came back to ASSISI.

At top end of town, near the Duoma and Santa Chiara. Parking nearby in Piazza Matteotti, though not very cheap. A pleasant small hotel and and enjoyable stay.

It's a stiff uphill climb from the Basilica but is in a great area with restaurants, near Piazza Comune. The main complaint we had is that this place is very noisy inside - the neighborhood is quiet but the walls, doors, ceilings, all create a noise vacuum that allowed us hear every word and footfall from every room around us. Didn't get much sleep here, even with earplugs!

POSITIVES: Value of room and services for the rate charged. Very clean, quiet, small hotel with great location within Assisi. Very helpful staff. Elevator. NEGATIVES: Shower, which was in “hallway” between bedroom and bath, using two curtains as “walls”. 5Euro charge for breakfast; no other place open in area for breakfast. Free parking MAY have been secure; otherwise 6E or 10E per night parking. NOTE: If using the city (10E)lot, be sure to keep the ASSISI CARD given at hotel check-in; without it the parking is 16.50E per night! OVERALL: As seen by the ratings given, this was really a very pleasant place to stay, with the exception of the “shower experience”, which has become a conversation topic! Also, value for price is diminished when considering the charge for breakfast and no private parking; i.e., a 53E room can become a 68E room with these factors. Worth it, however, in Assisi and the hotel's location.

We spent only one night at the hotel, but compared to other accommodations that we had during our trip to Italy (15 days) this was really the best. In the heart of Assisi, beautiful views, excelent staff, beautiful old building completely restored, great atmosphere.Great relation price/quality. Highly recommendable.

Hotel in pieno centro ad Assisi dal quale si possono raggiungere facilmente tutti i monumenti della città. Accoglienza molto buona. Colazione non compresa nel prezzo, ma ricca e soddisfacente. Non comodissima la doccia nel bagno!

We had some concerns about the standard and quality we would meet in a 2* hotel but these concerns were quickly dispelled on arriving at the San Rufino. We had two double rooms, both of which were spotlessly clean. Although there was no air-conditioning, the rooms were pleasantly cool and remained so through the night. The bathrooms were spotless and well-equipped with towels and toiletries. The only criticism we had was that the decor of the rooms was a little plain. All the hotel staff we met were both pleasant and helpful. The breakfast, for which we paid an extra charge, was excellent value and there was a wide variety of options to choose from. The location of the hotel was very good and the area is full of atmosphere. All in all, a very pleasant experience and I would gladly recommend the San Rufino to friends and family. The same cannot be said about the Lantern restaurant in the town. While we had a nice meal there, on paying our bill, the waitress refused to accept our VISA card and insisted that we pay in cash. The restaurant prominently displays VISA and MasterCard signs on the door as you enter the restaurant so it's not a stretch to expect that you can actually use these credit cards to pay for your meal. We were offered no apology or explanation for this refusal to accept our credit card. Fortunately, we had cash on us at the time but, had we not, we would have been placed in a most embarrassing situation. We were extremely annoyed by the attitude we met in the Lantern and left the restaurant without tipping the waitress, something we never do.

Out of six b&n's we stayed at during 2+ weeks in Italy, this one was--apart from its perfect location in Assissi (with Assissi's being one or our two favorite places in Italy)--probably the least warm and welcoming and the least generous in providing servicdes. The feel--very much inconsistent with the feel of Assissi itself--was that of a big impersonal hot6el. This is relative, of course, the other places we stayed--with the exception of an equally "cold"--small hotel in Siena--were phenomenal; and I'm speaking here as someone who spent some of his childhood in an Italian middle school on the Ligurian coats and knows Italy, its pensiones, hotels, etc. Had we not had such great experiences at b&b's elsewhere, the San Rufino would I suspect have felt adequate and even above average of its location within the small city and the city itself.

The Hotel San Rufino is a small hotel with excellent staff and a great location. The value for money is excellent. It is perfect for a one night stay. However, if you were to stay longer perhaps the quaint showering arrangments (only a shower curtain separating the toilet and shower with water running off into a drain in the middle of the floor) might be a little tiresome. Nevertheless, I would recommend this hotel to any traveller.
