Hotel Properzio - Assisi

An excellent stay! The Hotel is just down the street from the Basilica di San Francesco, so we were wakened by bells every morning-- not the quietest room in the world, but the location and quality of service more than made up for the noise. Maurizio, the on-site staffer, was a wonderful host who provided excellent recommendations, top-notch personal service, and was very helpful in general. We would definitely recommend Properzio, and would certainly stay again.

Hotel Properzio was a "pay what you get" type of stay. It was a great price in the small touristic town of Assisi, but when you count in the ticket I got for parking near the hotel and not moving the car early enough I should have stayed closer to the parking garage or at a hotel with a lot. The desk clerk was nice and tried to help by telling me to park near the hotel after 7pm, but failed to tell me I would need to move the car by 9 am. Not entirely his fault, but there is not much parking near the hotel and Assisi is built on the incline of Mt. Subasio. We initially parked down the hill to check out how to get the hotel before driving through the one-way streets and it is quite a hike from the town gates. All uphill. The hotel is about in the middle of the hill so if you park above the hotel then you have a hike back to your car too, with whatever luggage you brought unless you plan on blocking the road in front of the hotel, which is not recommended. The room was usable, but not the cleanest and was probably last updated in the 80's. The breakfast was basic, yogurt, coffee, juice, and brioche. The desk clerk was friendly if not too interested in my wife. Being close to the basilica is great when you want to see it, but not at 7 am when the bells ring for 5 minutes and you've left the window open for fresh air. Overall the town is great and gets quiet after the 500 buses load up and leave. The basilica is very detailed and worth the visit. And Il Monaci pizzeria has a wood burning oven for great pizza and service. I would maybe try another hotel should I go back.

Nice to satnd very close to basilica. Though hotel person advised me to keep room key with me all the time, they did not clean my room because they did not have spare key, I have never had such a strange experience at hotel. Bathroom was so small, the number of staff at the hotel seemed to be only one or two at a time. I wonder it is rather a B&B than hotel. But if you travel by yourself, it is OK, I think.
