The Palazzo Bartocci Fontana, built in the 1500 following the design of Giulio Danti, is situated midway between the Basilica of Saint Francis and the main square (Piazza del Comune) along Via San Francesco. Its foundation rises from storehouses, stables and inns of the twelfth/thirteenth century.

To this day inhabited and run by descendants, the family Bartocci-Fontana, the Palazzo still preserves the telari (canvas painting embedded in the wall) painted by Antonio Nessi and located in the central salon on the first floor. The hotel is the right place to have a pleasant stay, and to discover history, tradition and mysticism that are highlights of Assisi.

The telari, which depict mythological scenes, were painted at the end eighteenth century in tempera following the decorative manner. Located in the left wing of Palazzo Bartocci Fontana is the hotel Il Palazzo. Relaxed atmosphere and attention to detail welcome guests into a comfortable environment that preserves all the charm of days gone by, making it a unique experience.

Il Palazzo was in a great location right in the Assisi old town, just a few minutes walk to St Francis Basilica and 10 minutes to main square, felt very safe too. The staff were all very friendly and very helpful. The room was small but it was just me so I didnt mind. My view was fantastic, looking over the valley below. The only thing that bothered me was that the shower curtain in the bathroom was mouldy and made the room smell. The breakfast was good, the hotel is presented very well, fantastic value for money. I'd recommend it to others.

Given the late date of reservation, I managed to get the last room available. The upshot was basically no view. However since my main use of the room was for sleeping, this ultimately didn't really matter. The bathroom was very large and comfortable, but it could benefit from a shelf, more hooks and towel bars. The remote-control air conditioning unit was quiet and effective. Manager Sylvio was very helpful in trying to meet our needs. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The breakfast space is lovely.

Had a room with a magnificent view! Close to main square as well as the Basilica. Friendly staff, new elevator a great bonus (especially with luggage!) I really enjoyed my one night stay :)

My sister & I stayed at Il Palazzo in May 2010 for two nights. It was not long enough. Our room is exactly how the web showed it and it was beautiful despite the rain that day. The owner assisted with our bags and was very helpful on where to visit. We enjoyed ourselves so very much that we will definately come back again and stay longer.

Compared to our stay in Rome, Venice, and Florence, this place was a palace. All accommodations were 3* but Il Palazzo was by far the best. The place was immaculate, the rooms were spacious, there was a nice common area to relax, the breakfast was wonderful. The location was perfect; very close to Basilica St. Francesco. I had no complaints at all of the hotel. Ariana and Silvio were very friendly and welcoming. They were eager to be of assistance. I would highly recommend. One last comment: the internet fees were very low relative to the other places we stayed. I would consider staying again in Assisi just to stay at Il Palazzo.

Our room was absolutely charming, had a double bed and a loft with a bed as well as a sm. balcony. It was easy to find right off main square. There were very steep stairs (three flights) would be very diff. for very elderly or those with diff. clmbing stairs.

The location of this hotel is perfect for visiting Assisi. It is close to the Basilica and right on the main street. Of course, this does make for a less than quiet atmosphere, as our room was located on the front of the building. Our room was small, but well equipped. The hotel staff was very friendly--helping us with parking instructions and directions, restaurant reservations and assisting with luggage to the car--you can only park in front long enough to load and unload and the street is very congested with cars and pedestrians. We would return to this hotel if we are lucky enough to return to Assisi.

Our first stay in Assisi, we found Il Palazzo easily and loved the location. A stone's throw to the Basilica and about 3mins.to Piazza Communale. The room had a magnificent view and was spacious and lovely - only drawback was noise at night from street below, plus it was incredibly hot - they could certainly improve comfort with ceiling fans. The staff were all delightful, helpful and friendly. We would recommend this hotel without reservation. NB there are no elevators and many steps! Good exercise!!

The staff were very accommodating to us. My friend had sprained her ankle and they were very helpful with everything we needed. ALSO, I'd requested three nights in error. We were there only two and weren't charged for my mistake. In regards to 'Photographs' and 'Maps', I don't remember what was on the website.

This is a lovely little hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was small and the bed a little past its prime, but everything was clean and well cared for. My window opened onto the most lovely view of the valley! Breakfast was good, the location was great, though the directions I received with the confirmation were a bit lacking. Fortunately the people in the city are wonderful and quickly helped me find the hotel. I'd definitely stay there again. For anyone who has trouble with stairs though, there's no lift.

My wife & I really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Palazzo. The Hotel was right in town, we really felt like we were part of the town and all that was happening during the Easter weekend. The Friday night procession went right in front of our Hotel. The Hotel personel were very friendly and accomadating. The building was fantasitic. There are many steps to climb so people who would have a problem with many steps should not stay.

At first quite difficult to locate even with GPS. You have to get a windshield pass from the police to bring your car into the old part of Assisi. Parking is quite a distance, possibly 1km from the hotel. The hotel resides in a very old and comfortable building in the very center of the ancient part of town. Very close to shopping, dining, and the basilica.

Venere confirmed my reservation although there was no room available at Il Palazzo. The owner phoned round Assisi (no rooms) so offered me a room in their private residence! I was alarmed that Venere could err like this. I am rating the Il Palazzo room that became available.

The thing is we were the only guests at the hotel and we did not get the best room, or the one shown in pictures. At E 130 per night I don´t thing it was a marketing-oriented move... the room was nice, but quite small. No mini-bar which is quite a pain when you drink the marvellous red wine from Umbria at dinner. In fact we got the keys from the front door as we were alone in the building. On the other hand: perfect location and excellent breakfast. We´d stay there again, but we feel the experience could have been better.

Il Palazzo is a lovely little hotel in Assisi. The desk clerk was extremely friendly, helpful and booked us a terrific restaurant for dinner. The nature of Assisi requires climbing hills and lot's of walking. THe hotel is no different. There is no elevator and this hotel would not be ideal for those who are unable to climb stairs. The reward for climbing those stairs, however, is a fabulous view of the valley below.

Great location, and our room was one with a marvelous view over the entire valley below Assisi. The only caveat is that people should expect stairs, and more stairs. Rooms are on the first floor above the ground or more - ours was three flights up, no lift. There are steps up into bathrooms, down into rooms, etc. Not surprising in an old palazzo like this one, but be prepared.

Our room overlooked the valley below and was beautiful. Spacious, large bed, old world setting, breakfast was the best we have had for "Italian breakfasts"! After walking the hills of Assisi we enjoyed a bottle of wine in their courtyard, it seemed as tho we were the only ones in the whole place. The English receptionist was extremely helpful with all our dinner, bus, train etc questions. The mini fridge was also nice. This hotel was like staying in a large old home, we loved it.

The hotel ambiance and view were FABULOUS, however, the bed was VERY uncomfortable - a slanted, saggy, soft mattress. Also the toilet was very inconveniently placed, cramped behind the sink(!), and the shower doors were rickety plastic and fell out of their grooves!! All said, though, the environment of the town was SUPERB!!!

No air conditioning in room. The view out the window was as beatiful as it was scary. I got vertigo each time I approached within one foot of the window. There was a forty foot drop out that door/window to the street below separated by a flimsy guard. Structurally the room that face the street need to be recessed and a balcony need to be built for each of these rooms. The shower was noisy. There was no window to the outside in the our bath. Realizing the age of the building, putting an outside window for each bathroom may be impossible. Build fewer rooms, with more square footage, a balcony and an outside window for each bathroom. We would not return to that hotel, for all its medieval charm.

An excellent hotel with all the charm of Assisi outside and within its walls. Hotel personnel were extremely and sincerely pleasant. In return for a spacious and quiet room, a climb of over 60 staircase steps was required..rather a test for any septuagenarians! Just no place for an elevator. Breakfast room excellent..same for affiliated restaurant next door. Hope to visit Il Palazzo again.
