Hotel Grotta Antica is an adequate, inexpensive place to stay in Assisi. It's hard to criticize the place because the price is fair for the services provided. At that, mention should be made of the toilet inside the shower stall--a first for us--and the possibility that sewer odors were making their way to our room. But we loved Assisi and the Grotto Antica's location was perfect.

The staff at Grotto Antica were very welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay! There was a little bit of a language barrier but that is my fault as I should have studied Italian a little more before my visit. Davide, a very kind staff member, was patient with my friend and me and spoke very good english. I was so thankful for him! The hotel is located right off of the town center (excellent location), a stone's throw away from a huge selection of bars and all the gelato you could dream of. I was especially pleased to learn that St. Francis' home, pre-crusades, was practically next door! The restaurant was very comfortable and the food was delicious. One thing to keep in mind is the restaurant hours as that is the place to check in and out. It is highly unlikely that you will find anyone between those hours. I got lucky by walking up to a cafe on the center and found one of the staff. I highly reccomend this hotel or simply the restaurant if you have other accomodations. I will most definitely return.

Very friendly at arrival, nearly like being a family member coming home. We had lunch at the restaurant at arrival in a very cozy environment and with a very kind service. Due to a bigger group being served at the same time there was some confusion with our order but they compensated us very willingly with a panna cotta for the forgotten bruschetta and they brought us an extra bruschetta and a plate of pasta which we conserved for dinner. Excellent service, I must say. The room and especially the bathroom were very small, so having a shower was somewhat uncomfortable. I was also missing a desk and a chair in the room to really use the Wifi provided, but obviously the room was too small for that. OTOH at the price we paid we could probably not expect much more space.

The hotel is staffed spottily - and the restaurant below is the office, when it's open - if you come in without arranging ahead of time, you better have a cell phone to make contact. It helps to have a grasp of Italian too. That said, good value for the money in the heart of Assisi. Oh, your towels won't be changed daily, and your reservation won't be automatically charged to your credit card, so drop in the restaurant well before departure to pay - or you'll get a knock on the door at 10pm the night before you leave. Restaurant's good but not great. They do follow the charming custom of throwing in a few freebie munchies both at check in and during your stay. We went for peace and quiet for a few days. On the whole, a nice experience at an affordable price, but the complexities make it not so easy for newbies to Italy.

The room was small but comfortable. There is a problem to get there by car if you do not know the location. The navigator is pretty useless. We arrive at the Hotel asking people. The rest ok. Wonderful place.

there are no clear directions from the train station to the hotel on the website unless you are driving. The hotel itself is above a restaurant. When I got there, a note was on the door to check in at the restaurant and if that was closed to call the phone number listed. It would have been very inconvienient if I did not have a phone with me. The room itself was ok and was comfortable enough for my 2 nights there.
