Charming old hotel. Very pretty interior and extremely friendly and competent staff. Free WiFi in the lobby was very reliable. The restaurant provided one of the best meals we had in Italy. I would definitely recommend this hotel & hope to return one day!

Really good location in the old town and close to the Basillica and main square. Our room had a wonderful view over the valley with only a lane outside so was very quiet. Strange arrangement in that each time you left the room the air conditioning went off and you had to ask reception to put it back on - they always did. The attached restaurant was quite good but there are better places to eat in the town

We had a great time at the Hotel Fontebella! We had a family room, which was fairly spacious (twin beds downstairs, a full bed in the upstairs loft area). Everyone on staff was very friendly, from the young women at the front desk to the waiters in the restaurant. There are two highlights to this hotel: the location and the restaurant. Hotel Fontebella is located only a few blocks from the Basilica San Francesco, making it very easy to walk there. Our room also had a gorgeous view of the valley of Assisi. We also highly recommend the restaurant, Il Frantoio, located next door to the hotel. We ate here for both lunch and dinner. The meals were delicious, some of the best we had during our entire trip! The restaurant also has a great view of the valley, and the wait staff were attentive and friendly. We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel was right where it said on the map--which is a lot of uphill/stairs if you are walking, but that is Assisi. It is easy to park down below the town and then go up. The room we had--a quintuple--was perfect. It had three singles below for our children and a lofted double for the parents. Breakfast was very good in a lovely setting and was included in the price even though that was not stated on the site. It was a perfect middle location in the town. We had a lovely view of the valley from our room. There was free wifi up in the lounge room near reception which was quite fast. No complaints! We ate at a wonderful restaurant farther uphill called Pizzeria I Monaci, which was excellent.

An excellent base for a few days (or even longer) in Assisi. The hotel is in a great location, only a few minutes walk from the Basilica of St Frances (and from one of the main bus stops on the route to/ from the station). The staff were welcoming and helpful and the reception staff all spoke good English. Rooms were clean and the whole hotel well cared for. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. The hotel was not all that convenient for places to eat at night, many of which appeared to me to be nearer to the other end of town - not really all that far away but it took me a while to find anywhere on the first night I was there (this may just be a problem because of being there in early March - it looked as if later in the year there would be more choice). Overall, a great hotel in a really good location. If returning to Assisi I would definitely hope to stay at the Fontabella again.

Could not ask for a better stay. Perfect in every way. The parking across the main entrance was a big plus. Assisi is a treasure. The best landmarks include the 3 main churches - Francesco, Chiara, and Rufino but walking the streets and visiting the areas above and below the town are a must. The streets are charming, quaint, but can be steep in places. One should practice walking on inclined surfaces and have good shoes before walking in the towns of Umbria.

Family room was adequate for 2 adults and up to 3 children. Loved the view. Asissi is truly a wonderful city. Definitely eat at the Restaurante Medieval, it had fantastic truffle pasta and authentic food as well as terrific prices (100 euros for a family gourmet meal including wine).

We loved the Hotel Fontebella. I have rarely been in a place so welcoming. The staff at all levels understood what hospitality and friendliness are all about. I look forward to returning there in the future. I am so glad this website included a picture of the view from the "valley view" rooms. Being able to look out on that amazing view added so much to our visit and was well worth the extra euros. Kudos to Hotel Fontebella. They have a wonderful thin going...

This is a nice comfortable hotel very close to St Francis's Basilica. Rooms are clean and spacious with large bath rooms. Front desk personel are helpful. Unfortunately this hotel caters to tours. These move in and out en masse making noise and crowd the dining room. The dining room is just average but does save a walk up into the town center.

We arrived in Assisi with roads under construction within the hilltop city. The staff had no idea how we could drive to the hotel, although they did have parking available. It took us an hour to get through the streets, finally realizing we had to drive the wrong way down a one-way street to get to the hotel.

I was so worn out from a week in Rome that I was prepared to be upset with the slightest grievance - like the narrow little hallways that others have commented on. But our greeting was gracious, the family room was spacious, and even though we couldn't get the Internet hooked up (no wifi, and cable wasn't connected), Assisi is a holy place for setting worldly concerns aside. St Francis would have as much to accomplish today as he did in the 1200's. Also worth mention - the Fontabella has rare parking spaces (just a few) in front of the hotel. But take the train and bus and be prepared to walk "uphill both ways" in Assisi; the few cars we encountered were quite an annoyance in otherwise quiet pedestrian-filled streets.

The hotel is located close to San Franceso and therefore a good location to access the town. We arrived by car, a little unprepared for the effective one way system throgh the tight , steep streets and had a little difficulty in locating the hotel- this not helped by the road the hotel being located on being closed for road improvements. Parking was however directly outside the hotel which was good and the staff wee welcoming. We travelled as a family of 4 and were provided with a double height room with sofa beds at what would be the sitting area and a double bed at the mezzanine level. The room had a very good view into the valley. The only gripes were that the connecting timber stair in this room would in the UK be considered unsafe l suspect with a number of treads and the handrail a little loose and therefore noisy to walk on. We also could not manage to control the A/C which only stayed on for 1-2 minutes, the lack of which made the room uncomfortable to sleep in. The breakfast was good with the area located within the main building and not on a terrace as is suggested in the photographs on the website. This terrace is associated with the adjacent and separate hotel restaurant. Otherwise we all enjoyed our stay

When we were at the hotel, there was a redecoration of a street (which started in January) directly in front of our hotel and below our windows. NOBODY TOLD US about it before we came there, although we called there and asked about parking and they knew that we will come by the car. We couldn't park or even drive in front of the hotel and we had to carry our luggages from gate of a city, about 400 meters. If we had knew that there were no capabilities to park, we would have booked another hotel. We think that hotel should inform your web site of this inconveniences.

Hotel Fontebella is a lovely hotel located a few blocks from the central piazza. The bar, restaurant and sitting area are particularly elegant and everyone that we dealt with on the staff were more than helpful. Although our triple room was a little small, it was beautifully decorated, as was our very modern bathroom. We even enjoyed a breathtaking view from our room of the entire valley below Assisi. We enjoyed the free parking across the street and the more than ample breakfast buffet. We would highly recommend this hotel and would certainly consider using it again if we ever get the pleasure of returning to this beautiful city!

We had a huge problem at this hotel. We were informed that they had a parking lot but they had a very little place for 6 or 8 cars. We arrived and no one informed us that we couldn't remove the car from that "one" space that we found at that place. So, we had to removed because we had half of a day to knew the city. So when we came back we had no place to park.. we had a huge head each with that. We asked the receptionist (2 of them) to tell us if a parking lot apeard but they weren't helfull at all and didn't advise us. We were very upset with this situation. Besides that we had a noise in our room that didn't stoped. It had a good location, the room was simple but clean. The brekfast was very nice and in a very cousy place.

What an exceptional hotel! It is located within the walls of Assisi. It is easy to walk all of Assisi from this hotel. The staff is really wonderful and very helpful. My 8 year-old son called one of the staff who helped with our luggage, Mr. Lightning Man- he was so fast and great service. This family-owned hotel was rebuilt after the earthquake in the late 1990’s. The renovation was done to perfection. And the rooms and views are so beautiful. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. And the bathtub had Jacuzzi jets—my wife really enjoyed this!! The breakfast that was included was really good-cereal, fruit, cornetto, and coffee. We ate lunch at the restaurant and it was very good. They recommended a very reasonably priced local wine from the Umbria region. My only regret is we only stayed for one night.

We opted for a room with a view and were not disappointed. The room was nice and the bathroom, although small, was very nice and looked like it had been updated recently. Some of the furnishings (bedspreads) needed updating. The location was excellent because it was close to the basilica and we loved walking the backstreets to the center of town. We also appreciated that parking was just across the street. Breakfast was excellent. It was a wonderful visit!

The low rate rooms at 75 EUR are a disaster. After the first night I changed the room. The rooms @159 EUR (Rooms Nos.303, 403, 503 etc) overlooking the Umbria valley and San Pietro church are spacious enough and the view is really magnificent. The small rooms have dirty carpets and falling apart wallpapers. The rooms overlooking Umbria valley have nice clean parquette, but their bath-tubs are NOT safe. The bath-tub is very small, has 2 different levels and is under a low ceiling. You bathe in a clumsy position and have to mind your head all the time.

Following the excellent service we received at our previous hotel in Rome the Fontebella was disappointing. This "victorian" hotel had a dated, faded sense about it, although it seemed as though they were trying to be more modern. The linens were clean. The tiled bathroom was the best thing. We had paid extra for a room with a view and that gave us a reasonable sized bathroom. (The view was through a small window). Friends drove up from the south of France to join us and didn't pay the extra. They had a very small bathroom and were facing the fairly busy road. The manager was helpful and friendly. The other desk staff were polite but detached. The breakfast staff person was rude on several occasions, obviously wanting us to leave so she could clean up. Her attitude changed after we mentioned this to the manager. We had partly chosen the hotel due to the high recommendations for the restaurant from a previous reviewer. The dining room was not in the room posted on the site but in an annexe behind the hotel. The waiters were friendly and helpful but the menu was limited and the food average - in contrast to an excellent, very reasonably priced meal we had in a restaurant off one of the main squares. We had also partly chosen the hotel due to mention of a garden and a photo of food being served there. Unfortunately the garden area was closed.

The room we had was a quad, it was the best hotel room we've ever stayed in, it had a stairs up to an upper floor with a double bed and 2 single downstairs. the view from the room at the back of the hotel was fantastic, it looked out over the countryside. One downside to assisi, the lack of restaurants open in the evening. Can't reccommend hotel Fontebella highly enough.

We traveled as a family with two college age daughters. The view from our hotel looking over the Umbrian region was the best of our 3 week trip! The location was good with a parking lot in front of the hotel and if that is full, one about 3 blocks away. The climb to the hotel from the large city parking lot is straight up so you may want to drop your luggage off and then park the car. This was our first visit to Assisi and we loved the beauty and the many churches. We spent part of a day out at the hermitage where St. Clarie and St. Francis lived. It was peaceful and a great way to take in the Umbrian beauty. I could have stayed for weeks. The town does cater to tourists so there are the usual trinkets to purchase with every store carrying the exact same merchandise so a half day of looking around town shopping is enough. Spend the rest of your time visiting the churches and taking in the small passage aways off the beaten path where the locals live. I look forward to returning in the near future.

Position of Hotel is excellent, although access to the parking point is fairly tortuous (but probably easier than some other hotels in Assisi). We had a room overlooking the plain which had a fantastic view, I would recommend asking for a room on this side of the building. Very pleased with our 1-night stay at Hotel Fontebella. Provided you have any sort of map of Assisi, the hotel was very easy to find by car, onsite parking a huge plus. Location was ideal -- 5+ minute walk to Basilica of St. Francis. Room was small but clean and comfortable, with small but modern/updated bathroom. Only one small window to enjoy the view of the valley, but the surcharge for an outside-facing room was still worth it -- the view is that good. Food at the hotel restaurant was very good, with a good wine list featuring many local wines. Staff helpful and English-speaking friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

This is an excellent hotel. The room was splendid with a superb view. However there was one surprising and serious fault. The breakfasts provided were of very poor quality. The rolls and cornetti were poor, and, amazingly for Italy, the coffee was so bad as to be almost undrinkable. There were two options. Stale American-style coffee which had been sitting on the heat for goodness knows how long, or Italian-style coffee from a machine which was even worse. Surely it would not be too difficult to provide customers with freshly-made coffee for their breakfast as most hotels in Italy do.

We enjoyed our stay at Fontabella very much. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful when we first arrived, which was great since we had just had a difficult and stressful time finding our way into Assisi. The hotel is very well decoratated and kept in good order. Our 3 children were delighted with the room (on two levels) as were we. A get the impression of a beatiful traditional hotel in beatiful surroundings, with a committed staff. For the web page, the directions into Assisi could be improved (for instance include by which gate Assisi should be entered) and a better map.

Rooms flooring made in wood are noisy. Corridors noise too high. My point of view is that they should improve the walls isolation in order to minimize the noise, which disturb too much during the night. In addition, the air conditioning control is made only by the front desk. Thus, the guests must call them by phone from the room in order to change the temperature or turn the air conditioning on or off.

Very nice hotel on fairly quiet street in Assisi. The restaurant that is connected to the hotel had excellent food also. Friendly English-speaking personnel at the desk.

We loved the Fontabella. The view from the 6th floor is breathtaking and the room was extremely comfortable. The service was top notch. The Fontabella is a great place to rest and rejuvinate.

We stayed in Fontebella for 2 nights on our honeymoon. The staff were very helpful and friendly on arrival. A car space was available just outside the hotel. The beds were very comfortable, however, we were expecting from the discription and photos a larger bathroom and a room with a view and were little disapointed. Our stay was quite enjoyable anyway.

Having tried to navigate nmy way around various medieval Italian towns' one way systems I approached Assisi with trepidation. However, the tourist information booth situated just outside the town were able to give me directions straight to the Fontebella, which gratifyingly lies just inside the walls 100m straight through the Porta San Francesco. The hotel was very pleasant, limited parking is available, the staff were very efficient and welcoming. The restaurant was good, but perhaps a little expensive - great views over the Spoleto valley, though. The hotel is used by tour groups of various nationalilties - Assisi is full of tour groups, many secular, but many religious, so I really think that goes with the territory and was not a probem as far as I was concerned.

Our superior room had a superb view and was well equipped for a hotel squeezed into old buildings. Location is very central but the hotel was not as good as it's website claims. Despite it being 31º, the hotel kept switching off the room air conditioning and we had to keep asking reception to switch it back on. We chose the Fontebella because it offered a garden, but this was closed despite it being early summer. It looked very run down. The restaurant was only open for two nights during our ten night stay. But food was good. Breakfast choice was poor, and we expected more than plastic bowls and glasses for the price.

Very nice hotel in a good location. Wonderful Umbrian views from room. Excellent adjacent restaurant and good access to other restaurants and shops. Easy walk to churches of San Francesco and San Pietro. Pleasant and helpful staff. Recommend without hesitation.

This is wonderful place to stay in Assisi. The view from our room was beyond description: green Umbria and the beautiful Santa Maria degli Angeli spread out before us. The hotel restaurant is excellent too.

The room was Ok, had a great view but not too much else going for it. The hotel had a sad quality about it, not much going on and the public rooms were empty. There wasn't anything there, it basically was Ok to sleep but not really much else.

Absolutely wonderful setting! Assisi in the evening and then again in the morning makes the trip! Quiet, peaceful, and enchanting, the place a delight! Breakfast was awesome and they not only made cappucini for adults but also hot chocolate for the children. We were perfectly centerd for all touring and they let us leave our van in the parking area after checkout. We will definitely stay here again should we visit Assisi.

We stayed at Fontebella on 4-5 January 2005. This is an excellent time to visit Assisi - not too many tourists yet good weather. The hotel staff were inconsistent. The porter was highly service-oriented, the desk staff were not. I asked them to make us dinner reservations but they said there was no need, even though we asked if they would do this in order to get a better table (they did not). The breakfast is served in a small room off the bar in the winter; service was lacking (the waitress brought drinks but did not replenish the continental buffet). Our hotel room (a superior double) had a decent view over the valley but was very small (bathroom was tiny and you had to step over the toilet to get into the shower). Location of the hotel was excellent, and, they had several private parking places (at no cost); that was a great benefit. If you are not planning to spend much time in your room or hotel, the Fonetebella is fine and its location is wonderful. But the service was indeed lacking.
