I can't rave enough about Hotel Appenzell and the Appenzell region in general! The hotel is charming, clean, welcoming and perfectly located in the center of town. The staff is friendly, helpful, competent and speaks perfect English. The rooms and the bathrooms are gorgeous and immaculate. The popular restaurant and bakery on the ground floor have outstanding food. Appenzell has so many wonderful attributes - hiking, scenery, amazing food, culture, history -- it's just totally unique, fun and gorgeous. The Appenzell region does a great job in managing and welcoming tourists with its website, visitor center, hiking maps, calendars of events, museums, rail info, etc. We've stayed at Hotel Appenzell twice in three years and will definitely come again. I should note that my rating of relationship between price and quality is the result of the whole Swiss economy and high prices that prevail throughout the country. Compared to hotels elsewhere in Europe, Hotel Appenzell is on the expensive side, but if you look within Switzerland, it's a fair deal.
