The West Side Inn (it was called the Hem Hotel when we made our reservation)is "correct" - but not a 3-star hotel. It is located in the middle of nowhere, in what seemed to us the "deep south" of Amsterdam. There is little of interest to see in or around the hotel. A couple of saving graces however: an excellent lebanese restaurant (Cedars) a couple of blocks away and the tramway at the same distance. That said, our room was more expensive than the one we had a week earlier which was located smack in the center of town, at an 8-minute walk from Central Station.

The breakfast is excellent! Rooms are nice and spacious, there is a pool table in the bar downstairs... lots of vending machines, an Italian restaurant (great pizza) and transport to the city center is close by. All good, well worth the stay if the price is right :) And Amsterdam is (as always) the best city ever :)

Three-star hotel with very worn and damaged infrastructure. The room offered had the bathroom completely broken with the broken toilet and shower door that would not close completely, causing a real inundation of water in the room. The smell of wet mixed palquet was unbearable. The most striking the presence of mice, despite the traps under the desk. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I booked room in this hotel without reading comments and reviews from other people, stayed in HEM hotel. I was a bit worried about some reviews. Some of them was mentioning bed bugs or rats in the hotel, but me and my wife haven`t got anything of it. We was wondering only from some scratching noise, which was coming from ceiling, but we found it was very little mouse, not bigger, then 20mm :) It was very friendly. But overall stay very good!! Hotel has restaurant, bar, and nice picca in lobby!! Good connection to airport and town. There is 2 big food stores (Lidl and local food store) only 2min. walking from hotel. You get good offer for the price!! I`d back again!!

Nice hotel. Relatively cheap, you can't except more for this price. Our room was comfortable and clean, but in another room, there were mice... For us, the only problem was the regularly useless keys, but the staff managed this problem always immediately. taken together, our oppinion is positive about this hotel.

We had 2 rooms booked for 27th and 28th 2012. Room 409 was not having hot water and heater wasn't working. My friends had to stay on severe cold and after bringing to the notice of reception, the staff were ineffective and looking for excuses not being able to provide any alternatives. Very bad experience on a holiday.

The room was big and the bathroom spacious. The staff were friendly and tried their best to help you. The breakfast buffet is excellent. There were a couple of problems, we had a tv that didn't work and we had to tell them a few times. The staff member directly dealing with it was really helpful and tried his best and there was the occasional power cut. But, these were relatively small problems and didn't affect our overall enjoyment of our stay.

HEM was good for the price, but the shower was completely visible to those in the room (only glass panels...), which was awkward when we were a group of 2 girls and 1 guy. The water pressure of the sink was difficult to control, and the hot water and water pressure of the shower were only sometimes controllable. In fact, the shower almost ran out of water on our last morning there. Overall, though, I'd say HEM was decent for the price.

I have stayed in the HEM before- and I think, that with some exceptions (e.g. snacks in the evening)the quality has gone down over time. Basically the HEM is a budget hotel, and good for it's price. To achieve profitability however the management aim to push large numbers through, and charge for every little additional service:this puts some strain on the quality of the service actually delivered. Thus the internet provided in the lobby is very expensive- and there is no phone in the rooms.Instructions how to get to the hotel are also woefully inadequate- no mention being made of the very convenient Henk Sneevlietweg railwaystation near the hotel for example-or where to get off the number 2 tram when coming from Amsterdam's Central Station..

The main problem I had when staying at the hoel was that rain water was leaking into my room (404) and staff did very little in relation to the leak and no offer was made to move me into another room. The water whilst passing from the roof through to the room mixed with some other substance (possibly a sealant) causing it to heavily stain both the net and main curtain and at one point there was a pool of water sitting on the window-sill for more than 12 hours. This made my stay at the hotel a miserable one.

The rooms were sparse - in fact there are separate sections and we were provided a run down section of the hotel. Construction was on going and there was hardly any comfort through-out the stay. The mattress of the bed in room 118 is half broken / crushed and we had a bad backache due to it. There were mosquitoes as the room was facing the garden outside and we couldn't sleep at all. Overall it was a forgettable experience; the steep price of the spartan room will serve as a reminder not to opt for this hotel again...

This is not a hotel, its a run down youth hostel. We had left booking a room in Amsterdam very late, and this was the only place left, but they had massively increased the prices. They have an auto check in system that does not work, but have still cut back on their reception staff to compensate, so we had to wait for ages just to get in. In fact we gave up checking out altogether because the machines did not work and the queue of angry people trying to speak to the receptionist was so long I would still be there now. The room itself was OK, but the drains from the bathroom were blocked so everytime we took a shower the bathroom flooded, but there was no one at the hotel to tell. The location is in the middle of the most run down part of Amsterdam, almost the ghetto. The moral of the story is only stay here if there is absolutely nowhere else in Amsterdam left.

If you can't afford a better hotel than this, stay in a hostel. While the rate I paid was really cheap (but more than a hostel), I would not return here again. There was construction noise or some kind of pounding until midnight! The heater didn't work - cold. The front desk would not help. We could not get ice for an injury. There is no fridge in the room, obviously no microwave either. Luckily, it was so cold near the window, that our drinks stayed cold there :( This hotel is near some REALLY bad neighborhoods - I am a strong healthy male, and did not feel safe going 1 block away - like US Housing Projects. Apparently they only have rooms with 2 small single beds. I was willing to pay more for an upgrade, but the desk said the hotel had nothing else. This was the worst hotel of a 2-week Holland trip.

The reviews I read before booking this hotel were mixed. Hotel is situated faily close to tram and metro, grocery, beer and wine store, and a few restaurants. Breakfast was good. However, sections of the hotel are filthy, old and run down. Wireless internet worked only in the lobby and not in the rooms as indicated in ads. Hotel staff were untrained, overworked and powerless to help or make decisions. Manager was mysteriously unavailabe whenever a problem was encountered. I witnessed several guests attempting to get problems resolved as I sat working on the computer in the lobby. I do NOT recommend this hotel unless your budget is extremely limited.

Considering the average price for a room in Amsterdam, this hotel is not bad only if you are not too peaky, and if your plan is to spend the most of your time outside. They should put a timetable for Tram n.2, which is the only way to get there, on a wall in the hall and suggest the shortcut.

We have stayed at the HEM about 4 times now and so it can´t be that bad! When we first arrived, the welcome we received was not as warm as when they got to know us better. Some of the receptionists are not very professional but all in all they gave us all the information/help we needed without going overboard to help. One of them was especially nice and gave us a lovely big room when we returned. The snacks and drinks at the bar are expensive, however there is a supermarket nearby. The tram is really near too (number 2) which takes you to the centre in around 15 mins. The rooms are spacious but if you are there in winter, be sure to ask for heating in the room as some don´t have it! We stayed when the price was low, sometimes it is really expensive depending on the occupation of course.

Good hotel but is very difficult to find it, especially by night. The map should be more accurate.

Really i haven't seen since long an hotel where you feel disturbing employee. Rooms are small, cold. Bathroom is not bathroom but just a water point... could be okay for a 1 star and a cheaper price. Last thing this hotel is in middle of nowhere...

The hotel urgently needs some renovations, e.g. heating in the bathroom! The surrounding of the hotel isn't very nice. So, if you are a tourist I'd recommend you look for a hotel in nicer areas and closer to the inner city. But if you just need a bed to sleep in, HEM Hotel is alright.

I found this the ideal location for the more mature person. The staff were excellent, friendly and very efficient. The breakfast was one of the best we have sampled for this price group of hotel. Transport to and from the hotel was close at hand. Highly recommended for those just looking for a base to sleep and have breakfast. The hotel has a nice airy and relaxed atmosphere. Will return in the future.

Deve essere meglio indicata la descrizione per arrivare in hotel sia dall'aeroporto che dalla stazione centrale dei treni.

Excellent ratio price/conditions, good location, near tram no.2 which provides quick transportation to the center of the city and good night transportation. Quiet area, safe. Spacious room with air conditioning. Very nice staff and good services. But, as I travelled by car, I find the parking tax (12 euros per day) a little bit expensive, regarding that the car is parked in the hotel yard. Overall, I recomand HEM hotel to anyone visiting Amsterdam, especially for those who want a quiet refuge after a "hot" day/night. I will certainly accommodate at HEM my next visit to Amsterdam.

At first, we thought the price was economic for Amsterdam(around 70€/night) but the quality/price ration was poor. The hotel is divided in 2 parts : an extension must have been made a few years ago and all rooms of that side are without air conditionning + you get the warmth rejected by the air conditionning from the other part of the hotel, meaning that our room was a complete sauna during the stay. This part of the hotel is located just over the bar which basically means you will get no chance of sleeping before 1am. Staff not correct : once we requested some towels because the cleaning staff had forgotten to put new one. It lasted 45 minutes before getting some : I directly went to the reception to get some. This hotel looks good on the paper, the reality is quite different.

Very nice and clean hotel, the room was big and well equiped. I recommend this hotel, Especialy for the Israelies guests who think that hotels in Europe are much like the Hotels in Eilat ... but, the price for a night is a little high , the breakfast price is very HIGH! (15 EURO).

When i booked thru internet it was told that price includes breakfast and parking but when i printed the receipt it said that they were not included , and finally at the hotel, breakfast was included and parking not. This is a misunderstanding at all.

The hotel is close to the metro so it's very quick to get into the city centre because HEM it's located outside of it. We got a Smoking room, which was ok for the price we got a double room. The problem was that at night all that area smelled a lot of smoke and so the room did. The Shower door did not close from the inside, only from the outside, Some tile floors were creaked, and the trash can did not open trough the foot pedal. The beds were nice. Wireless is kinda expensive. A whole day is 10 euros.

Our only criticism of HEM is that there was no place in the room to store your clothes. There was a narrow closet with 4-5 hangers, but no drawers, no shelves. For two adults staying a week, we really needed someplace to unpack. We were left living literally out of our suitcases because there was not place to put anything.
