Please don't stay in this hotel! Although it is conveniently located (two blocks from Dam Square)this hotel is the worst I have ever stayed at. To start, just to get to the reception area you have to climb a very steep and dangerous stairway that an older or somewhat heavy set person won't be able to do it. When we entered the room is was dirty, it had not been cleaned and we had to wait for it to be "cleaned." The room was so small that the bed was against one wall and you could hardly move around it, it also had a very strong sewer stench coming from the bathroom and when taking a shower sewer water starting coming out of the drain. The only positive point is the location.

Very kind and welcoming staff. Breakfast very monoton but good enough for the continental rate. Hotel access stairs: Very narrow and high, not allowing two people to pass by. No elevator available. No spare stairs for emmergency? TV did not work and the staff not able to fix it during one week. Unleasant smell in the bathroom. Never again back to this hotel.

Dirty rooms, When you get there you don´t feel confortable, I found used cigarretes under my bed and a died flie smacked in the wall.... Paper walls, you can listen your neighbour activity...shame The receptionist female in the afternoon is very helpful and nice, I can not say the same with the guy who seems work in the reception since 0:00 during the night, The only good thing of this hotel is location and breakfast. Low low level. For young kids that go to Amsterdam to get high and that do not have any experience in hotels.

You get good value for the price you pay. Location is excellent. The room might not be very big and the hotel is not brand new but the room was clean, with mini-fridge, security-box, TV and wireless internet. Breakfast is fine for most people as ourselves. The staff was in general friendly and helpful and one French girl extremely friendly and helpful. And the hotel cat was cute and really friendly, a big hit for cat lovers like us.

Do not clean the rooms every day, they just make the bed. Neither clean the bathroom and the shower was damaged, sometimes no water or cooled fell. The room was too small, the only good thing was the view from the balcony and the hotel's central location. Too expensive for the service

Very steep stairs and no elevator. Rooms are small and have no sound insulation. No AC so you're stuck listening to loud trams outside. Good only to pass out for the night. Location is decent.

Excellent hotel for who stay in the fantastic city of Amsterdam as tourist or for a job trip. The rooms in clean e quiet...it's only too small but if you stay in the room only for sleeping, it's ok and I think that you must book in Di-Ann hotel.

The desk clerk was unfriendly, offered no service and doesn't answered any questions. She was uncommunicative. That's the reason why we felt unwelcome at the beginning of our holidays. But in comparison to desk clerk the other staff was very kind and cooperative in all situaions. Unfortunatly the "nice" steep stairs haven't been mentioned in any folder. This is a very important fact for older people to know.

Maybe, this hotel was a reasonable choice with its inexpensive prica and nice location ner Dam squire. What disaopinted me was the pooreness of the facility. I didn't expected more than steted in the website but the room(single) was so tiny and so was the Besides, Safety-Box and TV was out of order, and the telephone was temporarily removed for some reasons. However, Hotel staffs were kind and attentive, which relived my stress to some extent. So, I recommend you don't expect much more than the price. It's just Bed & Breakfast type.

Suggestions for improvement: - include actual nonsmoking rooms - increase size of safes to fit large-size laptops - increase room size - increase brightness of bathroom lights - fix loose or chipped bathroom appliances - include bathroom fan - avoid using stained bedsheets - include remote control for television

Having read previous reviews I was sceptical about peoples' comments re entry stairs - they were not kidding!! If you have any mobility problems (eg dodgy knees like me) you are in trouble! We booked a 'Deluxe' room - ie we had a balcony which was nice - but if that is what they called 'deluxe' I hate to think what a 'normal' room was like: you could hardly swing a cat! It was almost as if it was half a room... the bathroom layout was bad - becasue of room size again. The floor was extremely slippery if any water got on it - after a shower the whole floor was flooded. Location was good though (if noisy due to trams etc) but it was easy to find and staff were polite.

I would like to specify that I have been charged twice the price of the room on my credit card, so I will have to act by law if I will not have my money back. They told me that the money was frozen to ensure money availability on my cc, but I had to pay at the hotel as well... So I will check wether I will have my money back on my cc.. The location of the hotel is great, but it is really just a place for sleeping and that's all.

This Hotel is situated next to Herengracht and you can reach every Attraction by foot.

We stayed for 1 night in a triple room. The beds and the bathroom were clean, but the room needs a "make over": The window couldn't be opened, the sealing over one of the beds is brown and looks like it will come down soon ;), the curtain in the shower fell when I was in bath, ..............but with a sense of humor and if yor are tired, it was okay, and we would choose Di-Ann with the friendly staff again for a night or two.

Too small rooms without towels (we had to claim for it three times), without champoo or gel in the bathroom (nothing), poor breakfast and the quality not so good. Hotel as described. Walking distance to train station and main attractions of Amsterdam. Laundromat approx 5 minute walk down the road which was very handy. Great Italian restaurant on same street as Hotel. As per other feedback staircase is very steep but this appears to be the norm in Amsterdam. Tram line outside room so a little noisy but still able to sleep. Small fridge in room was also handy. Would stay again.

Great place. Lots of stairs and no lift. Small rooms. But a great location and it had everything we needed. Small but comfortable rooms. It had a nice balcony off of the dinning room that was nice to sit out on at night or in the morning. The breakfast was decent but not incredible. It served it's purpose. It had a great cafe right below and a convenience store next door that had some great cheap souvenirs. A perfect hotel if you just need a place to crash for the night but if you want amenities like lounges, elevators and fitness rooms & swimming pools or if you are not able to lug your bags up a lot of steep, narrow stairs, this is not the place for you. Good hotel for the money though!! I would stay there again for sure.

The room was tiny and the bed/pillows were too hard for my liking. The employees were very helpful. I did think I paid a lot more than the room was worth, but I was also there during New Years Eve, so I knew it would be an expensive visit. All that being said, the hotel is in a great location: about two blocks from the royal palace and two blocks from the Anne Frank museum. It's about a 20minute walk from the Centraal train station.

Dirty. sufficient breakfast. kind people. very good position. under the bed we've found a dirty sock, a shoes, an used cigarette and 4 condoms (not used, fortunately). the only reason to stay here it's the position: 5 minutes to Dam square.

We booked 2 nights through this site but sent an email to the property asking if they could advise if the Friday night became free. We were delighted when they said yes. Unfortunately, when we got there the extra night had not been put in the computer. They could not have been nicer about it. They gave us a room for free in the staff quarters that night (they offered another hotel as well) and were very apologetic and embarrassed. As we really just wanted a base from which to explore, we weren't bothered at all. The proper stay was great for the price (Amsterdam is expensive!). The location is brilliant, just a block from Dam Square and not far from the shopping areas or the red light district. They offer drinks and snacks for sale and have a lovely balcony off the breakfast room where you can watch the world go by with a cold drink in hand. I would happily stay again if we go back.

I LOVE KIKO the cat! We had a great stay--we're a young couple and went during the craziest time of year (new years). I read some really negative reviews on this hotel, but did not have a negative experience what-so-ever! All of the rumors about the stairs ARE true--they're crazy steep, BUT we were ready for them and took a lot of picture of them! Very cozy room, exactly as discribed/pictured--and yes FANTASTIC location!!

As the place was cheapish, I didn't expect too much from our quadruple room. But I wasn't prepared for the icy wind which blew through the poorly fitted windows. It made the two beds by the windows unusable, and we all squeezed into the other two, as we couldn't drag the beds away far enough from the windows. Worse though was breakfast. I wasn't expecting much, but it was rubbish. 2 types of children's cereal, a rubbish toaster to make toast, hard boiled eggs, and nescafe. All the guests were laughing/muttering. Staff were aloof and rude from the outset. If you can find another place, take it.

My friends stayed at the hotel nadia down the street and had a positive experience. I will definitely try there next time. + sweet cat excellent location - * awful breakfast (hb eggs, toast, sweaty hard cheese, even the woman working the breakfast area noted the cereal pitcher smelled awful) * awful staff (unhelpful, complacent, seemed irritated to have to deal with anyone - esp. the night person. the cleaning staff were the most friendly of the bunch. one day there was a very nice woman at the front desk.) * room stunk of marijuana and perfume (presumably one to cover up the other - not their fault, but maybe not allowing people to smoke in the hotel would be nice? - i can understand the desire to want to smoke, but my room did also have a balcony on which someone could have stood and smoked instead). * flights of stairs may impede you * tiny (i mean TINY) rooms * no ventilation * on a noisy street (the tram is going by regularly) * the wireless internet doesn't really work if you're in a room far from the lobby or the 4th floor

You just get what you pay for. Everything is basic, the room is tiny and a bit noisy because it is close to the tram track. On the hand, it is clean (especially the bathroom) and the area is safe. Breakfast was very poor. Only cheese, marmelades and margarine. Some corn flakes and boiled eggs. Every day the same. What about some sausages, bacon or ham? Orange juice undrinkable. Impossible staircase! In fact, as many other buildings in the area. Dirty, heavy windows hard to open and small double room direct to a busy street. Curious ventilation system: a broken coat-hanger holding the heavy window. Luckily we had a shower in the room! We knew many hotels haven't! We stayed 4 days in Amsterdam. We had meals in Jordaan and in the Herengracht area. Pizzeria Pepe in Jordaan was good. The best restaurant was "Admiraal" in Herengracht 319.

Well, all the other comments about stairs were right. There were certainly stairs. But our older travel companion handled them well. Also, a single room is really a single room with a twin bed, but it had a great balcony. We liked the location. It was easy to find. They had good service during the day, but the night staff seemed new and couldn't answer as many questions. The official hotel cat was quite friendly and was a cheery greeter in the AM and PM.

The hotel has a fantanstic location. We had a view to the middle of the town (near dam). Quite Close you can find restaurant, bike rentals, shopping street.... The rooms are not so big but the spaciousness is OK. It could be a little bit better cleaned and the windows would like to get a new paintwork.

This hotel is good for young people who do not mind sleeping in a very little room and do not care much about it's condition (kind of poor but clean). I would not say it was adequate to the price that we paid, because for only 6.00 euros more a night we stayed at a top quality hotel in Luxembourg.

Will not go back. Was there as a party of three. The room we stayed in was the triple one on the picture of the website but was definitely smaller than expected. Toilet was tiny, no proper shower, just a 'shower section that left the floor wet and shower curtain was moldy. Also, it was a room that smelled horribly bad from cigarrette smoke, we had to keep the windows open constantly despite the cold. When there was a change of plan and one of the three of us had to leave earlier than expected, we asked to use a double room instead of a triple. This was more than 24hrs in advance, but despite having availability we were told it was not possible due to venere's rule. It seemed more like they wanted to make more money on us! When we tried to discuss further the matter the 'all male staff' representative present was very agressive to us. So, although the location is great, the rest does not compensate for a bitter departure!

Definitely the worst place we stayed on our European vacation (our trip was over a month long). After lugging your bags up stairs that resemble a rock climbing wall, you are greeted by unfriendly and complacent staff. The "non-smoking" room was smelly, cramped and noisy. We still have nightmares about the bathroom. Probably the worst part of the stay was that the staff led us to believe that their internet access was free, but we were made to pay 4 Euro for 10 minutes (CASH ONLY). We're glad we only had to stay 2 nights....

What everyone says about the stairs is correct! you need climbing gear to get up them, pretty difficult when you have suitcases too! we were on the top floor! so 4 flights of stairs to get up them all! When we checked in we were given the right room but wrong bed layout but after talking to reception this was fixed within 10-15 mins! so excellent service there. Breakfast was disapointing, there were 3 slices of cheese, a toaster that only toasts 1 side and half a loaf of bread, no hot food or much choice, alltho the breakfast room did have a nice balcony. Internet points were located in the breakfast room but good and fast, but hotel didn't have wireless access (alltho you could pickup the wireless network from the Apple Mac shop from over the road!) Dam Square was within 10 mins walk from hotel, the Main red light district was an additional 5-10 mins walk past the Dam square, allthough there was also a smaller one about 3 mins walk from the hotel in the other direction. Overall a good hotel! I would stay there again but ideall I'd like somewhere with lifts or less steep stairs!

Hotel di-ann what can you say apart from it is exactly what they say. Very clean but small room which can get a little noisy due to the traffic, but lets face it you only need a room for the basics if you use your stay for the enjoyment of the city and not so much the accommodation! The stairs of the hotel are quite steep near the top but this adds to the charm of the building. Its perfectly situated for the traveller, with evething on hand.Good buget accommodation I would use again for a short stay.

Excellent hotel, steep stairs, very friendly and helpful staff. Quite noisey from main road traffic. Close to city centre. Recommend this hotel and will go back in future.

We choose this hotel because it was cheap and recommended as clean. In these respects it did not disappoint. It was very central but our bedroom overlooked a busy main road. Our room measured 7 feet by 9 feet, and the bed was 3/4 sized. The shower room was cramped but clean. The stairs were dangerously steep and would not be allowed in a public building in the UK.

Hi Folks, I stayed in the Di-Ann recently with my wife. Great location, 2 mins from Dam Square so it's easy to find. My only real gripe would be that the rooms are pretty small but other than that, the hotel was very clean and the staff were excellent. We got a room at the front which had a balcony, first morning the noise of the trams sounded like we were beside an airport runway but by the second morning we just slept through it ! The reception area is on the first floor and as with a lot of places in Amsterdam the stairs are narrow and very, very steep. If you have mobility problems or kids and prams etc. I would strongly urge you to consider somewhere else but we thought it was quite quaint ! Anyway, to sum up, this hotel was very good value for money with friendly and helpful staff. Nice to look at from the outside with small and functional rooms (no four poster beds here).....Enjoy !

Room was on 4th. floor up very steep stairs. A fall would kill you. Room was cold as double doors were warped and would not shut under any amount of force. Cold air blew in all night. Walls are paper thin, so quests next door could be easily heard. TV barely worked. Room was clean. Trolley was outside on main thoroughfare. I should have known better; I've been to Amsterdam many times. I will look for better hotel next stay.

THe hotel is good, the room we got, a king size bed with a very big shower room as big as the room with the bed, there is fridge to keep some food, it's very in the center, also near to a supermarket, shopping center and the main places in town. We have passed an excellent time there. It worth it.

We are not so young, ( m 55, f 43 )but even with heavy bags, found the entrance stairs easy. The Staff were not 'in your face' and the room cleaning extremely good. As Cat lovers, we loved that lovely tourtishel Kiko, who would often be found waiting outside our room to welcome us. The eathouses nearby give great value, but try to turn left out of the hotel to find them. The staff were very helpful and very good at finding where we wanted to go. We walked a lot, prefering the pedalos to the trams when we were exhausted. We would certainly book to this hotel again when we return next year. This place is a real oasis in a desert of overpriced, unclean hotels. Full marks. well done.

This hotel is located within a good short walking distance to most of the downtown action. For what you receive in location, service and cleanliness, the price is very good. The only drawback although applicable in many hotels is that the reception desk is located up two flights of stairs (or one "BIG" flight of stairs) and the rooms are located even highter without an elevator. The breakfast selection is common but good and the common area for the breakfast is clean

Hotel was in a good location. If you have trouble with stairs--REALLLLLLY STEEP stairs, this is not the place for you. Room was very small. (We had a room with two twin beds.) It was clean and the staff was hospitable.

Will not stay at this hotel again and would not recommend it to anyone! The place was infested with some kind of insects and my husband and I had bites all over our bodies. I would hardly rank it as a 1 star hotel. The breakfast was poor. The only good thing was the convenient location. However, this was not worth the 130 euros per night.

A very clean and good value for money hotel in a great location. This is not the most spacious of places but is in an ideal location to explore ALL parts of the Dam. I wouldn't hesitate to book another stay at this hotel....but only after I have been in training to tackle the near vertical stairs.

We had to pay more than they had offered us in our confirmation. We had the problem, that all rooms were full because of eastern. We didn't pay the price they ask for but more than they told us before. The room was very small. The breakfast for that price very poor. We won't stay there again.

A very confortable hotel, placed 2 minutes away from Dam square, in the heart of Amsterdam. The rooms are very small but clean and quiet. The service was excellent and the personnel very helpful. The major problem we encountered was the about the toilet room, who had no window and no fan either. Anyway, Di-Ann is a good choice if you want a hotel very close to all the city attractions. Maybe a bit expensive, but at least very clean.

The staff were very helpful indeed. This was booked for my mother and she had a lovely stay. Can't say too much as I wasn't there myself, but she didn't complain about anything.

Stayed three nights at this hotel in November 2004. The stairs up to the reception are steep and narrow! Don't bring heavy luaggage or go to this hotel if you are disabled! Staff was welcoming and professional. We had to pay the 2nd day of our stay. We had a twin room facing the street without balcony. It was small but had all necessary facilities, even a hairdryer. The noise from the trams outside can be a bit disturbing in the morning if you like to sleep in. What we didn't like was the breakfast arrangements. There was not enough food, even bread was missing, there were no cups or plates. It should not be necessary to bug the staff (who were petting the cat instead of looking after the guests' comfort)for cutlery to be able to eat! The breakfastroom was also too small and crowded. In general the price is steep, in Norway you can get a room in a 4-star hotel for the same price as here (100E a night). But I guess the price only reflects the general price level of hotels in Amsterdam. Location of the hotel was good, close to Dam square and Jordaan, making it a nice starting place for excursions throughout the city.

Rooms look more luxurious in photos than they actually are. Location excellent. Perfect for a base for exploring Amsterdam. Breakfast very basic. Good for families.
