We booked for 3 nights and were given a room on the top floor at the rear of the building. Had this not been the case the quality of my stay may not have been so positive (I am a light sleeper) as the walls are quite thin, the doors close rather noisily and it is possible to hear other guests. The hotel is located on a quiet, pretty street in a perfect area for exploring Amsterdam - close to the Weteringcircuit and from here it is possible to hop on a tram to get anywhere in the city. The beds are a little soft but comfortable, the breakfast plentiful and the staff friendly and welcoming. The hotel would be suitable for any single travelers and couples who want to take in everything this great city has to offer but don't want to be surrounded by the scores of drunken stag-revelers - Asterisk definitely has a more relaxed vibe which is important for those wanting to sleep peacefully between sightseeing/partying. The rooms are small and seem expensive for what they offer - however this is indicative of Amsterdam in general and if I was coming to Amsterdam again on a limited budget I wouldn't hesitate to book a room at Hotel Asterisk. Thanks! :)

A nice location and very helpful staff. If noise and a stuffy non-air conditioned room is adequate then this is the hotel for you. Having the windows open caused a lot of street noise starting at 0500. No ice available even for a price...

Be ready that rooms are really tiny. I stayed in a single room, the shower was near the bed, WC outside - one for a few rooms. The breakfast was ok - eggs, ham, cheese, apples etc. The museum quarter is in 10min walk distance. You can easily reach the center (Dam square, Central railway station) by train, it'll take 10min approx. The staff is helpful and welcoming.

A friend and I went for four days. We were looking for a quiet clean hotel away from the main hustle and bustle of central Amsterdam. The location was perfect to achieve this, whilst we weren't in the centre we were in walking distance of the centre and could reach everything on foot within the hour. The hotel staff were very friendly, I'd accidently booked a room that didn't have an ensuite, they allowed me to upgrade no problem. Whilst the beds were made every day the bathroom wasn't cleaned during our stay. There was also a left over pop bottle from the previous guests that hadn't been removed from the room. The room was very noisy, there seemed to be a couple of different families with small children staying and the walls were very thin. I'm pretty easy going so it wasn't a problem for me but if your looking for a quiet hotel I wouldn't recommend this one. I'd recommend this hotel as a friendly cheap budget hotel that is in a good location if you don't mind a half hour walk to central Amsterdam.

I had a great stay here. The rooms were small, with a basic-no-frills decor, but were very comfortable. The beds were exceptionally comfortable. The location, near Heiniken Experience, was on a quiet, quaint side street, close to the tram stop and many small restaurants. This was my first visit to Amsterdam. I am an adventurous woman over the age of 60 traveling alone, so I had many questions. The staff answered them all in most gracious ways. I would definitely stay here again.

For those looking for a very comfortable hotel when sightseeing Amsterdam, Asterisk is a very good option. The hotel is not luxurious, but the beds are very comfortable, the shower is very good - there is always hot water available - and the breakfast is abundant and varied. The staff is extremely welcoming and helfpul. Everything that was need, was provided by the hotel staff. Everyone in the reception speaks English, so that is very useful. The rooms were tidy and clean. The heating works properly. My parents visited the hotel as weel and they found it very useful as well.

The bedroom a a bit noisy (walkings in the staires, etc.) but the staff members are very welcomming and competent. Considering pricing and quality, on the one end, location on the oter hand, this hotel is a very god choice. Despite a friendly welcome and reasonable cleanliness, 90 euros/night for a very small twin room with shared toilet/shower room (between 4 rooms) together with very poor noise insulation (from other rooms, hallway areas and street noise) and very steep stairwell access is just not good value unfortunately. They also charge 10 euros for paying by credit card, which i was unaware of at time of booking. Decent breakfast, convenient location just south of city centre and only 3 minute walk to tram stops. They also have luggage storage room for those who need it after checkout. Overall, felt like a budget hotel, but priced above its level. Unfortunately i would not recommend or stay here again.

I'm not familiar with the hotel standard in Amsterdam, but the overall rate of this hotel is more than sufficent with respect to the quality of services and cleanliness and spaciousness of room. The only flaw was the room beeing at the groundfloor just in front of the stairs and the lift, so it was noisy due to the guests going to the upper floors

Good quality overall, especially the breakfast provided. Main negatives are the very steep stairs so it's a challenge if you have a big luggage. The single room is very small but adequate. On my first stay, the toilet/shower was on another floor which is quite a drag. When I went back after two weeks, it's good I was given a room where the common toilet/shower was on the same floor.

The room and place were nice and overall clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was well furnished, but tiny. In fact, the bed was smaller than twin size. Had the bed not been so narrow, it would not have fit in the room. I'm a small person, so I did not mind, but if I were a big man, I think it might have been unsuitable. The stairs are dangerously short in width between each other. Because of the stairs, I do not recommend this place for people who don't walk well or people with small children. There is an elevator, but it is slow and at 1 point during my stay, did not operate. For a healthy person or couple, this hotel is nice, clean, and inexpensive.

I was in Amsterdam for 3 nights by myself. As a recent college graduate, the price and other peoples reviews were what got me to book at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms and public areas very clean and looked to be quite new. Sharing a bathroom was not an issue, it was always clean and I never ran into anyone. My single room was sort of small, but was not an issue, even with me being 6'6". The hotel has a 2nd group of 8 rooms across the street and half a block down, but the short walk to breakfast was not an issue. Location was great, only a short walk to the museums, and maybe 30 minutes to the city center. I would definitely reccomend this hotel to anyone looking to travel on a budget. It was well worth the 44 euros a night.

When we arrived at the Asterisk it seemed to be a long way from the centre of Amsterdam, but it turned out to be a short walking distance from all attractions and areas. This hotel appeared in advance to be somewhat remotely located, but it became obvious that the location was really quite good overall, because it is quiet, safe, close to good restaurant clusters and commercial areas (including the market), very near to key tram lines, and close to the museums. Staff were very helpful. Twin beds were actually separated. Bathroom facilities excellent. Note: they did ask to be paid in advance and in cash, which for a multiple-day stay might maxed out our cash machine limits.

This was my first stay at Hotel Asterisk. It was perfect for my needs, and an extremely good deal, especially with the full breakfast included. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The quiet residential neighborhood was a blessing, and I slept quite well. I shared a bathroom, which was always very clean, and I never had to wait for people. I was expecting a budget hotel, but Hotel Asterisk was only budget in the size of the room and my choice of a shared bathroom. This was my first trip to Amsterdam so it's difficult to compare, however, for the pricing I would say it's a good place. The room is VERY small and noise travels in the hotel. I consider myself lucky to have had a top level room and quiet neighbors. All in all my stay was satisfactory. I wouldn't recommend this to a traveling couple. The double bed was pushed up against a wall so someone would have to crawl over the other to get out of bed for a late night pee. (And don't forget to bring a robe for the out of room toilet.)

The staff (particularly at reception) were fantastic, breakfast was good, the building quite beautiful and very clean. We expected a small room from other comments posted but we didn't expect a small bed. The double bed was more like a king single. Our room was next to the stairs which was very noisy and there was jackhammering in the building outside our window. Perhaps paying the extra for an ensuite room and asking for a room at the front of the building would be better.

We booked a double room via Venere, the rate quoted was 80 Euro, the map said Den Tex Str - the map today shows a completely different location and the rate is now 69 Euro !! The Hotel was perfect as far as location was concerned, and the staff were excellent, the breakfast was fine BUT the room was totally different to the picture - a double bed squeezed length wise into the room with not even a cm on either side and to open the window you had to climb onto the bed. Our understanding was that we were to get private bath - turned out the Venere booking was for a basic at the rate quoted, and to upgrade to private would cost us 40 euro extra, but the hotel was full. If you pay by Credit Card you get charged 4% extra. All said - we would return to the Asterisk, the position was perfect for exploring Amsterdam, close to Rijks, trams and restaurants.

I recommend the Hotel Asterisk as a budget hotel in Amsterdam. Our room was large and clean, and was serviced daily. The only downside with the room was that it smelled of cigarette smoke. The smell was quite strong and could not be gotten rid of even with the windows open all day. The Hotel is on a quiet street and the staff are very helpful. It is close to public transport and a supermarket is in walking distance.

Friendly staff, clean and quiet rooms. Bathroom should be refurbished. Good location, near the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum and the main tram lines. Credit card payment are surcharged in 4%. Prices at Venere.com are only for cash payment. We have enjoyed our stay, however, next time we will try to find a hotel a little bit nearer city center.

This was our first time to use the internet for room reservations in Europe. We were very please with our hotel choice for the following reasons.....cleanliness, staff cooperation, and location. It was near to public transportation. Plus some museums were within walking distance. It certainly make our visit to Amsterdam a very comfortable experience.

The room was very small, not to say tiny (definitly less than 9 square meters). All doors slam automatically and are hence very loudly, so that your neighbours will wake you up at night. Which is a pitty since the hotel is in a very quiet and beuatiful street near the very city center.nThe room also heats up which was in early June already close to being unbearable.
