Hotel Reviews D'Amsterdam
Portugal, Jun 2009
A decent and relatively inexpensive hotel in Amsterdam is hard to find. I found that anything less than 90-100 euros is a dump, so I found this hotel to be a good value in comparison. I stayed in the twin room which was very spacious, the breakfast was good, and the location very convenient, within walking distance to all the sights. I'd stay here again, no complaints.

Good place if you (for single room) don't mind a Barbie doll bathroom - small is not a proper word to describe it from a US point of view. Well located, near every thing, etc. Clean, etc. Service ok, not great but good price.

The room cost 60 Euros a night for a single room - it was seriously the most bijou room and bathroom I have ever seen before in all of my travels - so I thought the quality of the room vs cost was very disproportionate.

Only stayed overnight but the room, service and value was just as expected, perfect for a sightseeing base, not for relaxing in, does what it says on the tin. Lovely breakfast and superb location, 10 mins walk to Dam Square, 2 mins over the bridge to Liedsplien but yet in silent residential surroundings.

The hotel managers/owners were very kind and attentive. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed. It was nice to be close enough to the bars, but not on top of them. Actually, there is a little Italian restaurant/bar around the corner where they don't have tourist prices.

Very good position, price and excellent breakfast. The connection service to/from the Airport is very usefull and the receptionist arranged the booking of the shuttle for us. 15 min. walk from Dam square. If we had the chance to visit Amsterdam in the future we would certainly stay here again, it was a very pleasant stay.

Our standard "double" room is really really small. Just barely enough to move around. No room even to lay down our luggage. Should be just a single. Facilities have been updated - TV, shower, etc. Breakfast is adequate. Location is quiet but still close to most sights/attractions. 20 mins walk max. to all sights.

An interesting quality/price ratio: low price (for Amsterdam) and correct quality. Really small room (and tiny bathroom). But that's OK if you plan to visit the city and don't plan to spend much time in your room. Good location, just a little bit off the noisy places (although not far away).

We love Amsterdam, were on Honeymoon & this is a very nice simple place to stay. We were very happy with our accommodation. Steep steps but we have stayed in this type of property 3 times now & this is the first we've seen with a lift. Very nice Continental breakfast too. Would happily stay here again.

It was well over priced for the size of the room. Our suitcases were bigger! They did offer to exchange our room for an even more extortionate price. The worse thing about our stay was the amount of bites we recieved from sleeping in their bed. We had to go to a chemist near the hotel to buy antihistimine creams and sprays to administer to the matress there. It ruined our stay and will never book through this site again.

I came to the hotel having read reviews about the small bathrooms and room size, so I was not dissappointed at all with what I recieved (but have to agree - they are VERY SMALL - my toilet was IN the shower cubicle... very odd). Overall, I had a very satisfying stay. The rooms were clean, the included breakfast was very nice (and plentiful), the free internet very welcome! (although the advertised "free wireless" never actually worked from my room, so I had to go down to the lobby to use the hotel computer there), and the position of this hotel was great. Only a 5 minute walk to Leidseplein... so very handy for public transport and all tourist activities. Overall, I was very happy with my stay. For the price, this was a great place for a reasonable price. I'd recommend it to anyone who is travelling on a budget.

We stayed in a double here for one night. We paid 65 euros and were not disappointed at all. I was a bit worried when we saw the outside, but the place was simple and clean. THe room was tiny, so you might want to ensure that you are booking a true double bed rather than the "slightly larger than twin" that we were stuck with. Not sure if that was because we paid less or what. Not a big deal for one night, but I would have been disappointed if it were longer. Clean, simple, cheap. Nothing fancy, but I didn't want to pay for fancy. The breakfast was ample, there was a computer to use (it said only 15 min free but I used it a bit longer), it has an elevator, the employees/owners were helpful and we left our bags all day in the locked breakfast room. I was very happy and was nervous about the cleanliness because it was such a great price. Oh yes, and the location is great at well. Very close to Leidseplein, Vondelpark, shopping, Jordaan, etc.

The hotel was perfect. It was on a quiet street with beautiful view. Right on the river so you're close to the water taxis and regular taxis. It is very close to the calmer tourist area. The public transportation is easy to use and near by. We had no trouble hopping on to get closer to the other areas. For the price, the hotel was fantastic. The washroom was recently redone so it was clean and very functional. It was a perfect hotel for the traveller on a budget. Normally for me (an avid Europe traveller)as long as the hotel is clean and has a decent washroom and is close to the sights, I am content. This hotel passed all of the above requirements. I would stay again

I was an independent tourist. I booked for 4 nights at 69euro each and when I wanted to extend it by 2 nights was charged 95euro per night! I deemed this outrageous as it was the same room! People in the hotel do not talk to each other, so I did not meet anybody. there is no 'common room' for people to meet. For tea and coffe in the rooms we were given small disposable plastic cups. I did not expect or like this.

I was quite satisfied w/ D'Amsterdam, but wish I'd known: the handy shuttle to/from the airport did not coordinate w/ my flight (too early) and that museums, tours, small shops and restaurants DON'T take VISA! Very nice, but rather small room, but that didnt matter. If you are in Amsterdam, you wont spend a lot of time in the room anyways. The room was very clean, had a sat TV and a very nice bathroom. A lovely little hotel very near the central area (10 minutes walk to the leidseplein area with 100's of restauraunt and bars, 15 minutes walk to the museum district). Plentiful choice of food at breakfast- continental style with cheese, meats, cereal, ham, toast, bread, boiled eggs, fruit etc..) Room was quite small and the bathroom minute, but I had imagined this would be the case when booking- still excellent value for money for the area it is is. Oh yes, and other reviewers are right about the stairs, I have never seen any so steep in my life- could be a real issue if you have mobility problems if the lift isn't working. Friendly and welcoming owners. I would definately stay here again.

It was the first time I went to Amsterdam. I spent all the time I lived in Amsterdam visiting the City so I came back to the hotel yust late in the evening to sleep and I wake up early in the morning. I think it's good enough for this kind of day. I saw there where an internet point inside and the breakfast room was clean and large. The centre of town was well connected by trams near the hotel and the battle was near too. I enjoyed the time yust because I choose this hotel.

Pretty good price/quality. The negative point for my single room was the bathroom/toilet in the room too small (space optimized to accommodate both toilet and shower in the same small spot and the sink was really too small) but for a short stay it was rather OK. Free WI-FI Internet connection available. Great all-you-can-eat b'fast buffet. Friendly hotel owners.

This hotel was perfect for our weekend stay in Amsterdam. Room was nice and clean but had a very small bathroom, something we really didn't mind. Breakfast has everything. Overall the best was the location: 3min walk to Leidseplein, where you can take public transport to elsewhere. Perfect price/quality. It is not indicated in Venere, but you must pay an extra 5% on top of the price that appears on the web page.

The room was fine but the bathroom area was tiny. To get into the shower, you had to move the shower door thing and squeeze past so you were wedged in by the toilet. When you showered, you had to stand where a man would stand to pee and needless to say the whole bathroom area was then soaking wet.

Overall, a decent hotel for the money - it was in line with what we were expecting. The free WiFi was decent, although not terribly fast - probably a single shared DSL line among all the hotel guests. But hey, it was free, which is a big plus compared to paying $15 a day at other hotels. The continental breakfast wasn't anything fancy, but it was good and fresh daily. It was a bit strange that we had two, smaller comforters on the bed rather than a single one that covered the whole bed. The room was small, but that's Europe for you. Our biggest complaint, believe it or not, was the toilet: it was a design we hadn't seen before (and we've been to Europe a few times), where a flat, waterless surface was below you, catching and keeping everything in the open air (not submersed in water) until you flushed. I don't need to explain that this made for either a smelly, disgusting experience or a multi-flush scenario (or both). Either way it was bizarre and ridiculous. The ultra-ultra-thin toilet paper didn't help matters either. We stayed at the Amsterdam Hitlon later in the week (the business portion of our trip), so we got to see what a hotel that costs nearly 5x as much looks like, and they didn't offer any breakfast, or any free WiFi. They did have a normal toilet, however. ;-) Other than that ridiculous toilet, our stay was perfectly satisfactory. We wouldn't stay there again though because of that silly toilet.

The hotel was very close to the Melkweg (about half a mile), which was a big plus for me, as many of the C-Cup musical acts would be performing there in the evenings. The proprietors were professional, though a tad austere. The room was very basic - only big enough for a full-sized bed, a 3-foot-wide desk & a small side table. I remember thinking it was a good thing I was traveling alone, as it may have felt claustrophobic for 2 people. The bathroom took up about 1/3 of the room, with no dividing curb to separate the tiny shower space from the toilet or sink - only a flimsy vinyl curtain, which did nothing to prevent the water from getting everywhere. I literally could not turn around without some part of my body touching either the wall or the shower curtain. But I guess I was actually one of the lucky ones, because I'd heard that many hotels in Amsterdam only have bathrooms on each floor. Other pluses were the microchip key, which allowed you to come and go as you pleased (without having to leave it at the front desk every time you exited the hotel) and the "expanded" continental breakfast offered each morning (until 10am). The only caveat (depending on your personal opinions and preferences) is that it is a non (MJ) smoking hotel, which was particularly inconvenient for me, considering that I'd specifically traveled to Amsterdam as a judge for the C-Cup. In essence, I couldn't fulfill my judging duties in the privacy and safety of my hotel room; I had to do all my smoking in the coffeeshops. Granted, it wasn't the end of the world, but it did leave me at the mercy of the coffeeshop operating hours (i.e., I couldn't toke whenever I felt like it, and DEFINITELY no wake-and-bake!). Overall, the hotel fulfilled my basic lodging needs at a decent price (considering the USD $1 = 1,50 Euro exchange rate at the time, the 55 Euro/night rate was helpful on my wallet) and I never once felt that my stuff wasn't safe.

Never been to Amsterdam before, but our stay was made all the better through Hotel D'Amsterdam. It was two minutes walk from the lively Leidseplein with restaurants and bars galore (and a tram stop with regular transport to the centre). For two intrepid city walkers like ourselves it was fantastically well positioned, easy to find, and made exploring the city a doddle. Stairs were incredibly steep though, woah! although they had a lift, and i guess all those tall townhouses are the same. but i waffle...

The hotel took us a while to find but once we had found it, it was easily reached by the tram. It was a 5-10 minute walk from the tram stop. (Ask the tram driver where to get off) The hotel had an elevator so taking our luggage up the room wasn't a problem. The room was small, but clean. (We got a single room for double use, so can't complain that)It didn't have an air-con but it was ok. (We went that in July and the weather was still cool) There were some restaurants and coffee shops nearby(5-10 minute walk, they were next to the tram station actually) The front desk didn't offer 24-h service. They offered breakfast, which started at 8, but we didn't take it as we went out pretty early in the morning. The biggest problem we had was in the second night when we returned to our room, we found that one of the windows was missing (which could possibly allow somebody to climb into our room)When we called the frontdesk nobody was there so we couldn't change the room. Luckily nothing bad happened that night. Despite that, the stay was overall a decent one.

We booked a double room, but now looking at the pictures on the hotel website, I believe that we were given single room. The room was extremely small, we could not comfortably move around and there was no place to put our luggage(both me and my husband are slim). Our bathroom was very cute but again so small that when we were showering the water would splash all around on the floor, which made it difficult for the after the shower usage. Breakfast was good with the exception of our first morning there, pretty much everything was in short supply or did not look fresh, including stale coffee, it seemed like the owners were away and whoever was filling in, did not do a good job. The hotel is located in the quiet, residential neighbourhood where you can observe the real life of the local people and go to restaurants filled with locals rather than tourists. And yet is still walking distance to all the attractions you may want to visit. We found by accident a very good place to eat, sort of like a diner, very close to the hotel, called "HAP HMM" that I would recommend for both their very good prices and good comforting food, I find is needed from time to time when you travel (I am sure if you ask at the reception they will point you in the right direction). Overall, we had a great stay in Amsterdam and the hotel would be great if it was not for too small room, so I would only suggest to specifically ask for a real double. The owners are very nice and helpful people.

We chose the hotel because we were going to a Paul Weller concert in the Paradiso. We stayed 2 nights and the location was fantastic. In a quiet road just 5 mins from the main square and Paradiso. Hotelier was very relaxed, breakfast was good and overall the quality of location and hotel was well worth the price. Would stay here again.

Our stay at the Hotel D'Amsterdam was most pleasant. The room while small, was clean and comforatable and the location was perfect for us. Marianne, our hostess was helpful and very nice. The breakfast there was a great way to start a full day of sightseeing. Excellent value, would stay there again.

We had a great time at the hotel, the location was great, just over the road from some great night life and a few minutes walk to Dam Square. We found the staff very helpful and welcoming, they even made us tea on our arrival. The lady behind reception was fantastic

The room size could give a first bad impression, for it was so reduced, but it was so clean and tidy, and everything so well installed in the correct place, and the couple in charge of the hotel were so helpful and familiar, that my stay there can be qualified as excellent.

Very small and bland room for a 3 star hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was normal for Europe, which was fine. Who ever cleaned the room did only a fair job. Was a few minutes walk to one of the main squares where there were many resturants. Hotel is located in a fairly nice area

We had two rooms, one triple and one double. Triple room #10 was great very spacious and large. Second room #9 was complytely oposite. Room was tiny and so was the bed and bathroom was even smaller. The smallest bathroom in Europe that we have ever seen, and we seen small bathrooms. Bed barely fit two people and no room to put our suitcasses. Also it is a great area close to everything, museums, shops, restaurants. Except at night it is very noisy and really hard to sleep because room has no air conditioning and windowns were always open. I guess you get what you pay for.

We spent there 3 nights, and until i payed the room (on the 2. day) the staff (owner) was a bit "suspicious", (no smile) which disturbed me ...but thats the only disadventageous thing i could say about the resort! The room are really small, but cleaned up every day (the bathroom also) and calm. Breakfast is "all you can eat" with good food selection. City centre and main tourist attarctions are close also by walk. Altogether i could recommend this hotel for a few days staying.

Excellent location, friendly helpful staff, room excellent for the two of us touring Amsterdam, close to tram lines, canal tours museums. We choose a very small room because we only slept there. Hotel just off main road, but our room was very quiet. We will stay there again. Amsterdam was beyond our hopes for visting

A wonderful clean hotel close to all attractions. Our room was small, as advertised, but very adequate and fully contained.
