The best thing is surely the location: just up to the tram stop #1 to train station (15 minutes) and very next to other two lines just round the corner (tram #3 and 12, autobus #353). Take a look on GoogleMap. 5 minutes walk to Leidseplein (very nice Amsterdam commercial and nightlife center)! On the street level there's a good "Albert Heijn" supermarket. I slept in a three-bed room and it was not so large but quite clean and the bathroom was quite spacious; room was not noisy because the window was on a garden not on the street. TV with remote control with 10 € of deposit. The stairs are really steep and narrow. The complimentary breakfast is really nice: continental but unlimited eggs, ham, jam, coffee, fresh fruit... Overall positive, especially if you don't have big demands and you want to save money. (They asked for cash payment beacuse of their POS connection problems...)

The convenience is good. But I think that there are the likes and dislikes because a restroom, the shower are joint ownership.

This was my 8th visit to this hotel in recent years, and is always my first choice. Very good value for money if, like me, you are looking for a cheap, basic but good-quality budget hotel. The staff are excellent and welcomimg; good location and easy to access all the sights of Amsterdam; 5 minutes walk from Leidseplein; 15 minutes from Central Station by tram (Tram #1 from outside the hotel, or Tram #2 or #5 from Leidseplein). Like most Amsterdam properties the stairs are steep and there is no lift, so bear in mind if you are an elderly or disabled traveller (request a room on a lower floor). Excellent continental breakfast included in the price - unlimited boiled eggs, cold meats, cheese, cereals, bread (toasters provided), jam/preserves, fruit, coffee, tea, fruit juice (buffet, self-service). Rooms are not usually available for check-in until 3pm, but there is a secure, locked luggage room where you are welcome to leave your bags if you arrive early. Rooms and facilities are basic but clean. Multi-channel TV in all rooms. Cheaper rooms share bathroom and toilet facilities but I have never found this a problem. Wash-basin in all rooms. For a little extra you can book a room with ensuite facilities. Highly recommended for the budget traveller.

The best thing with this hotel that it is easy to get there from the Central station (tram line nr 1 to Overtoom). The same tram takes you to the centrum so buy a bunch of tickets in advance in a store there they sell them,it cost the dubble to by them on the tram.Leidseplein- an entertainment area is 5 min walk, the other "centrum" is 5 min by tram. The worst thing with the hotel was our noisy neighbours next door, smoking joint, drinking, partying, getting home late and smashing doors every night.Of course everybody has a different reason to be in Amsterdam, I was there with my 12 year old to go to museums,to Mme Tussaud and places like that,so this was not really the best envirement for her."Smoking joint " smells in the whole buildning. I asked for a non smoking rum at booking,I don't thing they have any.Rums are clean, might be noisy when you have to sleep with windows open in the summer,we kept them closed,it wasn't so hot when we were there. There is no air conditioning.Bathroom is outside- I didn't realize that at booking.Breakfast buffe is good and included, and was the same every morning(could have been nice with some change,we were there for 5 days).Stuff is welcoming and helpful.

The manager was lovely and the room was just fine. It has a great location near the Vondelpark and a market is right next door. The only issue is no lift so one has to heft baggage up as many as 3-4 flights of stairs.

Clean, friendly, great location near Vondelpark and the museums and literally opposite a tram stop and bike rental shop. Above a supermarket - very handy. Friendly and knowledgable staff, good, plentiful breakfast. Everything you could want from a budget hotel, excellent value for money, I would stay again.

This is more a hostel than a hotel. the room had such a bad smell that we must buy a spray! no, soap and shampoo in the bathroom; the bed linen had cigarettes burns... and to sleep you have to wait untill your neighbours decide they want to sleep too. WC ensuite we thought was sign of quality, not at Abba hotel!

Abba is a fantastic hotel if you want something cheap but that is central and clean. Great sercurity, very friendly staff. Also very handy having a shop under the hotel open every day. 5 min walk to Ledseplein. everything we went to was within walking distance. No complaints from us at all:-)

We had shower but no bathtube. Not draining off with rapidity and water was accumulated in my feet. Small wash-basin inside the room, very inconvinient. Not shower soap in the bath. Very complete breakfast and very well supplied constantly. Double crystal in the windows isolating perfectly of the sound of the avenue. I'd repeat in this hotel.

Excellent location, front of Constantijn Huygensstraat tram stop with a supermarket on ground floor. Room a bit small, but ensuite bathroom was very clean. TV, chair, desk..all basic, but I was enjoying the city and just going "home" to sleep. Friendly proprietor. Great breakfast--got crowded with students during Sat. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay.

Hotel Abba is directly across from the Tram 1 stop just passed Leiseplein. Very convenient. There is a grocery store directly under the hotel (so convenient when you need something). The hotel is "smoke friendly" which can be a plus or minus depending on your style. Owners and employees very nice and offer a great deal of information if needed. Our room was quite a big size as we were given a triple instead of a double for the same price. I don't know if all the double rooms were booked...didnt' ask. Hotel is in a safe area, but our room was particularly noisy due to street traffic. It didn't bother us, but requesting a room in the back would be beneficial if you need some quiet. Would probably stay here again.

It's the worst hotel I've ever stayed. As the hotel located near a very busy cross, we didn't get any rest in the first night. The service was even worse when we asked to change to a quite room, they said we should have been prepared with noisy street because it's the centre of a big city. I've been to NY, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Toronto, but I've never had problem sleeping in a centre-located hotel. On the second day, we had to shop for ear-plugs just to get some sleep for the rest of our trip. Also keep in mind that they only accept cash. It shouldn't be a problem for guests as there were cash machines near the hotel, but sometimes the machines were cashed out as most of guests had to cash there.

good location, only about two blocks from vondelpark and about four blocks to the leidseplein (sp?) square. borders the museum district as well. there is a tram stop directly outside of the hotel, easy transportation to and from the train station, or anywhere else in the city. there is a nice grocery store and an ATM directly beneath the hotel. we had a room on the street side, which made for a lot of noise when the windows were open. the street is pretty busy so the noise was basically constant. the room accomodations were basic but sufficient. overall, we would stay there again but would request a room off the street.

A typical Amsterdam budget hotel, steep stairs and no lift, but great value for money. I have stayed there twice and have just booked a room for a third visit. Rooms are small but adequate and clean, with TV and wash basin; toilet and bathroom are shared with other rooms on the floor but again very clean, no problems at all. Staff are friendly and helpful; breakfast is plentiful - cereals, cold meats and cheese, breads and toaster, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, tea/coffee/fruit juice. Great location close to the museum quarter and Leidseplein square; tram no.1 stops right outside the hotel and runs through the centre to the central station (or walk 400 metres to Leidseplein where you can also pick up trams no.2 and 5); if you are feeling energetic you can walk to Dam square in about 15 minutes. Don't be put off by the few negative reviews on this site - if you want a decent basic hotel at an affordable price, then hotel Abba is the place; I have tried several budget hotels in Amsterdam but Abba is my favourite and offers the best value.

Abba is okay. The room was okay (but not that big), breakfast was okay (but not great), location is okay (but a bit far from the center). If you look for a place to sleep, you will do fine. But make no mistake: it's nothing more than that.

The owner is pretty mean. But his employees in general are quite nice, especially two employees from UK. Rooms are small and the stairs are stiff, but what you can expect in Amsterdam? The hotels of lower price range usually share the common reputation of being small and not sound proof.

The breakfast was good... what else can you say. We arrived at 7 am and check in was at 3pm. Every other hotel we stayed at on our three week stay in Europe let us have an early check in, but this one. When we arrived back at Abba totally exhausted from traveling since three that morning, we got our keys and climed the four flights of narrow stairs to our room. The room which was a good size, had yellowed bedding with some kind of stain on them; the walls had what I could only make out as foot prints on them and last but not least, the bathroom had a huge gob of hair in the drain. On a lighter note, the staff was very friendly, the T.V. had loads of channels, and we were on the top floor so the room was a little less noisy and because we were higher off the main street, we could try to ignore the street filled with trains and busses that seemed to go all night. But hey, it's Amsterdam and accomidations are where you lay your heads. Next time we will spend the money and stay closer to centre ville. We would not return to this hotel.

Stayed 4 nights in a double ensemble room with my girlfriend at Hotel Abba in July. Check-in: Receptionist was not very polite. You have to pay in cash for the whole stay upon arrival. Room: Our room lacked a door from room to toilet(!) - not very nice. The door is a thin sliding door and ours was broke. Otherwise ok considering the price. If you are unlucky with your neighbours you won't get a lot of sleep as the walls are thin. Breakfast: Good but too early (8-10) Location: A tram stop just outside hotel and 10 min walk from Leidseplein. But it is not in the "center" of Amsterdam in my oppinion.

This is my 3rd booking at the Abba. Quite frankly; the best overall hotel value in Amsterdam. Good location, professional employees, and a small spotless room with a balcony for 30 EUROS a night. With a balcony. OK...the room is a little small, the bathroom is shared (but spotless) the housekeeping staff could clean a little earlier than 4 p.m. but again 30 euros a night.

Abba had a few negatives and positives. The price and location were great. A supermarket and tram stop downstairs were a big plus. Beds were comfortable but walls were thin. Everything about this hotel was cheap except the price. Reception is reached by disgusting concrete steps often littered with empty drinks cans and nasty smells and stains. At the top of the steps is a forbidding shabby unglazed door leading to reception. Our room was cleaned daily, with fresh towels except for one day when there were none at all. Had to get them from reception. Mouse bait was located under the bed (but no dead mice). Our balcony had not been cleaned for months, possibly years and was a horrible unusable mess. Street noise was not bad, but the interior walls are paper thin. The No 1 tram stop is outside the hotel and the major museums are within easy walking distance. Breakfast was adequate but nothing special. Staff, especially on reception, were always helpful. This is more like a hostel than a hotel and if you can afford to pay more, do so. We will not be returning under any circumstances

Very nice stay; tram stop, grocery store and ATM at the foot of the hotel are indeed a plus. The bathroom was shared, but only with one other room in my case, and I hardly met these neighboors. The hotel is "smoker friendly" but not in the public areas, which is great for breakfast.

Considering how much my girlfriend and I paid for our room (180 euros for double room for 4 nights), I was really very impressed indeed with what Abba offered us. The location was very convenient (both because of the tram stop and the grocery store. The room was a good value, but parts of the stay were hit or miss. If you happen to get quiet neighbors, you're in luck, if you don't...be prepared to hear every move because the walls are thin! That part was distracting. The service was uneven, but never atrocious. I was there off-season and actually found a place closer, cheaper and of higher quality (Hotel Quentin -- about 4 blocks closer to the park) for my last 3 nights in town, so it might pay to search for budget hotels on the internet to compare.

Hotel Abba is very handy to Leidsplein and museums. There is a tram stop right outside the door that can take you directly to Central Station. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the bathrooms are kept clean. The eating area can get tight in the morning for breakfast - its a little small. The staircase is worrying - very steep and difficult to manuvre with baggage but it can be done. All in all we were very pleased with this place and would stay here again.

Hotel Abba was a case of "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR". It was safe and that was most important to us as we were on a student budget. However, its cleanliness left a bit to be desired. The staff were polite and helpful and for this I am grateful. However, the climb up the narrow staircase and the noisy neighbours made our experience very so-so. Breakfast was filling with bread, jams, coffee, cereal (basic stuff), eggs and even a little toaster. If you are on a student type budget and are ready to suck up a bit of dirt, this place is perfectly ok. Amsterdam seems to either have excellent but expensive choices or places like Abba. All in all, I would give it an ok review - not too bad, but not too good either.

The Hotel is well situated: tram stops just in front of it with wich you can reach the center easily (it is a 5 minute walk away), there is also a supermarket just downstairs where you can shop. The breakfast is served in the other building, for which you need to go down to the street. The food itself is quite boring (not a big variety, and the cheapest stuff you can buy), though plentyful. The place is almost the cheapest in Amsterdam, but comparing to the other hotel we stayed in Bruxelles (Ustel), Abba was more expensive and the service definitely worse.

Hotel Abba offers a great opportunity for travellers on a low budget to experience Amsterdam to the fullest. Location is excellent, just minutes from the Leidseplein which offers more than enough restarants, bars, shops, and coffeshops. The Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum, Van Gough museum and Heineken Brewery are also within 10 minutes walking distance. The Canal Bus service is just a few minutes walk, which is a lovely way of getting to the centre of town, although this still only takes 30 mins to walk. The hotel offers a very friendly welcome and clean, comfortable rooms. Reception provides a good tourist information service, and the supermaket below the hotel is very convenient. The breakfast service is more than what I expected, and the free coffee on offer cannot be missed. I will definitely consider staying at the Abba Hotel when I next return to Amsterdam.

This was my first trip to Amsterdam and Hotel Abba made my trip!!! The street noise was a little loud, but the sounds of Amsterdam are so nice I didn't mind at all. Perfect location right near the museums and everyone was very friendly. Thank you Hotel Abba for making this a great experience. Hotel Abba will be my hotel of choice when ever I travel to Amsterdam. The relationship between the price and what you get is INCREDIBLE!!!
