I wanted to have a coffea instead of full breakfast in the hotel. The waiter said that was not possible. Than i went to the cafe outside. This is not acceptable.

Our stay at the American Hotel was a pleasure. The desk staff and concierege were very helpful and professional, the hotel is lovely and in a good location, and we had a spacious room. The only downside was the meal we had in the very attractive restaurant. The service was poor and the food was expensive for the quality.

Just back from staying at the Amsterdam America and was one of the nicest hotels i have ever stayed in. It is in a great location for what ever you want to do in Amsterdam. My only problem was with 1 reception Staff member who took money out of my credit card with out asking me first. It was for security on your room per night night which the hotel take straight away on arrival. Most hotels i have ever stayed in don't do this but do just take card details. Other then that one problem the stay was fantastic and i would stay here again if i return to Amsterdam

Our Classic Double Room was dull and gloomy; the lighting was very poor and being Winter, meant that it had a depressing quality - especially as the room felt undersized. The shower was poor although the bathroom overall was good. The hotel was lively and well placed and staff pleasant

First time in Hotel. The Room has its best days behind it. The view from the window looked directly onto a old and unsightly wall. Poor price-performance for a four star hotel.

The only down points were the lovely building being covered up with scafolding & the room service knocking on the door too early in the morning. Gorgeous building with amazing bar & resturant.

Excellent hotel in an excellent location. The staff are very friendly, the room was spacious with a nice view of a canal. The meals we had in the dining room were of excellent quality. The only thing that we found to be over priced and of poor quality and service was the breakfast, at 19.50 euros each I would recommend eating breakfast out in one of the many eating places nearby.

This hotel has a great location, 4 computers on 1st floor free for use with printers, 10% off Blue Boat Canal Cruise and provided a free map of Amsterdam. Best way to get to the hotel from the Schiphol airport is to take City Bus 197 (get off at Leidseplein right in front of the airport - 4 Euro/person). To travel throughout the city, get a 24 hr pass for the tram or GVB busses (7 Euro). All pick-up right outside the hotel. Location of hotel is within easy walking distance to museums, lots of food/shopping, Heineken Experience, and canal cruise. Only downside was the room was a bit small/tight around the bed. Our room was an internal room so there was no view, but it was very quiet and bed very comfortable. Definitely would stay here again. There are tons

This is our second time staying at this hotel and it was once again an excellent experience. The staff is friendly and helpful and the rooms and general ambiance of the hotel are great. What we probably love most about this hotel is the location. Although it can be a bit noisy because it's located on a busy street with lots of tram and car traffic, its across from one of the main squares in the city so you walk out the door and into the excitement offered by the city. It's also close to many of the attractions we like to visit including Vondel park and some of the museums. It's a nicer area if you want to be a bit further from the red light district. We love this hotel and will return on our next trip to Amsterdam, and would recommend to others as well.

Only two criticisms: The breakfasts are way too expensive - if you are on any kind of budget go to Starbucks or one of the numerous cafes nearby for breakfast. The minibar is ludicrously and laughably expensive. I will definitely stay in this hotel again when I am next in Amsterdam.

The hotel was in a great location, sadly the room that we had let it down. We were in Room 129 which was very small, very dark with no view. Overall rating would have been an 8 rather than a 4 with a better room.

The American Hotel has an ideal location, close to shops, cafes, and cultural attractions such as the major art galleries and museums. It's a pleasure to stay there. We found the staff excellent and caring. Breakfast is good value, offering a wide choice of 'full English' or Continental cold meats and cheeses, along with breads and pastries. The sumptuous, art deco dining room is a 'must see' and a good reason in itself to eat there. Our bedroom was quiet, comfortable and gave us everything we could have wished for in a city hotel. The canal view was a bonus. We'll definitely book again.

I recently stayed at the hotel with my boyfriend and given the 4 star rating and reputation I expected a really great hotel, but I'm afraid it wasn't. Our room was very small and quite dated, overlooking a dark courtyard, which surprising since they state on their website that they recently refurbished the rooms... The bathroom was tiny, but at least recently refurbished, unfortunately not to a good standard as the shower had very little pressure and there was only one set of towels in the bathroom, although we booked for two! Positive: The bed was comfortable and very, very big! The hallways on our floor, were extremely dated and shabby, it felt more like a cheap hotel than a 4 Star property. The 0.35 cent per minute internet service is a rip-off it took two minutes for the very slow PC to be ready to access a website and I couldn't help but feel it was on purpose. The entrance hall isn't as grand as it could be for a place like this, but then again, our room and experience were nowhere near 4 star anyways either. I did like that they had a lot of documents showcasing the hotels history on display

We were a little disappointed with our stay at this hotel. It seemed that every time we requested something, the answer was that "we are fully booked", however when we enquired about extending out stay there was a choice of rooms available. The first night we discovered that the sheets in our room were used (and stained) which was quite unpleasant, and the room service only gave us one towel the next day. We didnt feel like we got personal service apart from the concierge and night room service man who were both very helpful and friendly.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and was expecting a bigger room since we were a family, but yet the room was so small that one of us had to sleep on the floor which wasn't quite pleasant. The location of the hotel was great though, easily accessible to the main shopping street and near the flower market and the staff at the reception were all really helpful and friendly

Great location, easy to get to from the airport (direct bus service). Good value rate although breakfast not included, not the cheapest breakfast but a very good selection and worth it for the breakfast room, I went for one of the two nights I was there. No view from my room but it was quiet and very comfortable bed. I would recommend this hotel and would return if in Amsterdam.

Room was large enough for our needs, though small by American standards. Great location in a lively neighborhood. Recommend the bar but not the breakfast in the restaurant - 20 Euro for a glorified continental breakfast is a bit much. Staff was very friendly and helpful, all spoke excellent English.

We are a married couple who decided to stay in Amsterdam for a brief 4 day holiday. The photos we saw on Venere made us pick the American hotel. If you're looking for a quiet time, do NOT pick it. It's very close to Leidensplein, the noisiest part of Amsterdam with lots of bars and young life making, well... young life noise! Also, the rooms are NOT sound proof, so whenever people on the floors above would walk, it would be loud enough to keep us awake (even when the trams didn't). A last note: Venere.com says "all taxes included"- that's not true - the hotel insisted on charging us an extra city tax which was an unpleasantry on top of our already high price.

Boom Chicago is around the corner of Leisplein, great comedy show in English, and you'll find new lover if you go alone-:)Advice for other travellers: Don't try very strong mushrooms! Possibly make you miss your flight!

An excellent hotel: full of Art Nouveau style and character and in the heart of the city. It is easy to get to all main attractions using the very clean and efficient tram service. Breakfast in the beautiful dining room with all its original Nouveau features still intact is an experience in itself - but breakfast is a little overpriced at €19 per person ... All staff we spoke to could not have been more helpful or friendly. The hotel’s cool cocktail bar with walls lined with photographs of famous patrons from film and music is great fun as well and well worth a visit after a long journey! Some very good restaurants are within easy walking distance. This was our fourth visit to Amsterdam but the first to the Amsterdam American and all in all we found little to criticize at the hotel – it’s not the cheapest accommodation in town but you get value for money nevertheless - we would definitely stay again.

The room was a nice size and nicely decorated. I had requested a quiet room with a water view, and they gave me a lovely corner room on the 3rd floor facing the canal. The main negative was the concierge was on holiday and the front desk was extremely busy (at times only staffed by one person). At least an Information Booth was across the street.

I already had a good bargain price(especially for Amsterdam standards) but upon arrival was upgraded to a junior suite - which was very nice & spacious - the standard is high (big beds & loads of pillows) & the stay was very enjoyable & the breakfast (excluded at € 19) is worth it if alone for the surroundings. Highly recommended!

Booked this hotel for a one night stay in Amsterdam. Wanted to stay in the Leidseplein area of Amsterdam...this hotel was right there at the square (not directly in the square, but you can see it from the square). The room was a little small...but this is Europe, and it was a single room. It was very comfortable. I had a room that did not have the scaffolding from the renevations in front of it, and was even able to go out onto the balcony and sit and watch the action in the Leidseplein (even though the sign on the door said the balcony doors were locked from the outside because of the renevations). Even if I wanted to stay indoors, the channel on the TV showing a live camera feed of the goings on in the square from the hotel was nice. As it is slightly set back from the square, noise was no problem. A little pricy for the size, but the quality and location were on par for the price.
