Single room was the size of a wardrobe, 1.8 meters at its widest point. it should not be offered to guests to stay in. at 50euro a night it is way overpriced.

Staff was inattentive and rude. Made no effort to assist with problems in their rooms. TV remote and A/C did not work. Repeatedly asked for help and was told it worked fine. Asked for ice and was told since they didn't have a bar they didn't have ice. Told to get ice at a bar on the street. Unhelpful.

The staff at Hotel Fontana is wonderful and very helpful. If you love being in the middle of the action, this is the place for you. You are in the middle of the piazza, so noise and action are a constant until the wee hours of the morning. This is the second time I've been to Amalfi and we returned to Hotel Fontana because we enjoyed it the first time.

This is a cute family-run hotel. The staff were great; friendly and informative. The location was perfect; the hotel straddles the town square on one side and the sea-front on the other. This can add a bit of noise if you like to go to sleep early. Overall, it was worth it though. I was very pleased with the room, it's size and cleanliness. I guess the only downside is the fact there aren't really any common areas in the hotel (which wasn't a big deal) and the breakfast is made up of sweets like cakes and tarts. Although that being said, they had a selection of 13 each day! I would definitely stay there again as I felt I got good value for my money.

Excellent location on Via del Corso in between Flaminio and Spagna metro stations. Rooms facing the street can be quite noisy. I could also hear movements in the corridor outside my room as well as water running in the pipes in the bathroom.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a very nice young man who was very underqualified for the job! He originally told me that we could not bring luggage into the hotel, we had to leave it behind the desk with him. Having said that, one person in our group left passport at front desk and if clerk had not run down to give it to us, we would have left it. Was very nice.. The lobby is on the second floor and the elevator to hotel is in the back of a restaraunt just below the hotel. Our bathroom had mold in the shower and the bed was springs with a board on top! I would describe the pillows as 'pancake pillows', as they were as flat as a pancake. Sits right on the courtyard or piazza and while it is very pretty,is very noisy! When we checked out, clerk tried to give us 100e back when we gave him the exact change for the rooms. After several minutes of explaining the bill to him, he reluctantly kept the money. Also, parking is NOT free and if you have more than one car, you park it yourself and it's quite a hike, uphill, from parking lot to hotel. There is no where to park car while loading and unloading.

Very friendly staff, great location - even without a beach front window I had a great view over a bustling piazza! Room was very bright and clean - a bit noisy as it was right off the dining/reception area but really, no complaints!

I had a great stay at the Hotel Fontana (September 9-12, 2009). If you need anything while there, check with Luana (the manager, I believe) who is incredibly helpful (some of the other desk staff who work evenings - not so much). My (single) room was very small, even by European standards but was fine for me and had a little balcony with a FABULOUS view of the harbour and the beach. The breakfasts were among the best I had in hotels while in Italy (including Florence and Rome) and the staff will make your espresso or cappuccino for you at your request. The hotel entrance is a bit hard to find, it is on the west side of the building, next to a small pizza shop - it is up two small flights of stairs (as is most of Amalfi). I sleep like a rock so noise at night is never a problem, but during high tourist season the streets can be noisy and I preferred to sleep with my window open. If you choose, you could close them (they are newer double paned glass windows that block out noise well. If you are going to use the beach, make certain to get a Mandingo beach card at the front desk which will get you a chair and umbrella for 5 euros on the beach. You could choose to spend twice that for a more upscale private beach with bar service. If anyone is interested, contact me - I have tons of pics around the hotel and would be pleased to share or answer questions). I would chose to go back to the Hotel Fontana anytime!

We stayed at the Hotel Fontana for 5 nights. We felt the staff was helpful, knowledgeable of the area, and spoke English enough for my husband to understand. They were also very good with our young boys who liked to ring the desk bell everyday! The location of the hotel was optimal (right in the Piazza del Duomo); although the Piazza could get noisy at night, with the balcony doors closed, we slept without any problems. Our room for the 4 of us, was clean and spacious. We had a balcony that overlooked the piazza so that was a nice added feature. We had breakfast there every morning (usual European continental breakfast). We loved Amalfi and Hotel Fontana so much, we are planning another stay there for our anniversary in the spring! I would definitely recommend this hotel to others!!!

We stay in a junior suite which for the price was fantastic. Amalfi is a wonderful town and Hotel Fontana is right in the middle of everything; on one side you have the main square and on the other side you have the water. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

My stay at hotel Fontana was very pleasant. The room was clean, spacious with a nice bathroom and a balcony facing the sea. The hotel is located in the very center of town - so some noise is inevitable, but it wasn't much. To be in the center is very convenient for a two day or just a short stay as mine was as everything including the gorgeous cathedral, restaurants, beach and a bus stop is just downstairs. The only drawback is that even though there's an elevator, there's also a flight of stairs leading to the street level and when I had to leave for the airport early in the morning I had no help getting my rather heavy luggage down. But I consider this a small inconvenience in comparison to all other advantages mentioned above.

We stayed for 2 nights in early spring time with our 3-months old baby. Hotel was exactly as described, with also free wireless internet access in the lobby. The deal was excellent, and the location right overlooking the beach (there are also rooms overlooking the beautiful piazza). Amalfi is great for dramatic coastline sceneries, excellent food and drinks, and the romantic ambiance. Be aware that the town is very tiny and stuck between the mountains and the sea so many streets are in fact staircases. Parking can be a big issue also in low season (solved in this hotel by a valet parking service).

Hotel Fontana was really easy to find - we got off the ferry and saw the sign straight away. I don't think the photos on the site really do it justice - the room were probably the biggest we had in our entire stay in Italy, they were very clean and comfy. We had a room that opened right onto the square which was great - watching the people in the square from our balcony was great! Breakfast was ok - not the best but certainly not the worst we had! Service and staff were really good - always friendly and helpful. Hotel Fontana is a great place to stay in Amalfi - would definitely recommend it to others - great location, really handy to the buses and ferries, right on the square, and really good value for money.

We had a nice room overlooking the sea even though we did not book a special room. The hotel is very convenient to the beach (across the street) and also to the town. The hotel arranged for the car to be parked in nearby garage (for a fee) which was convenient. In all, I would stay a Fontana again.

Great hotel. Free internet, too! The ONLY knock on it is that it has such a great location, it's near the bells on the main church that are LOUD. The crowd below can be loud, too. But I guess the bells are a good wake-up.

We had 3 rooms - 1 for my son & wife, one for my son & daughter and one for myself. My room was very small and cramped but had a nice view of the sea harbour. One of the others had a wonderful view of th Piazza San Andrea, while the third while being very spaciuos had no view. Breakfast was good. Best of all it was very close to everything. Parking was 16 Eur per day (as advertized) so for a longer stay it would be best to not have a car. Older travellers should be aware of outside stairs requiring climbing to reach the lobby.

The hotel has an excellent location in Amalfi, with the main square with the Cathedral on one side and a square by the sea on the other. Our room looked out over the square onto the water. The hotel was convenient to restaurants, shops, and the local bus, which stoped in the square in front of the hotel. The bus was good for traveling up and down the Amalfi Coast, with all day passes giving us the opportunity to get off at any stop and then back on to travel to another place on the Coast. Being on the square next to the main road there was some traffic noise. but shutting the windows virtually eliminated all noises.

Myself and three friends stayed at Hotel Fontana in Amalfi. Our room was spacious enough for three adults and the cleanliness was great. Our room was on the third floor with a balcony overlooking the piazza in front of the church. We loved all of the activity that took place underneath our balcony. One day there was a beautiful ceremony on the church steps which we fully enjoyed from our balcony. It is tough to find the front stairs. They are as you emerge from under the tunnel between the beach and the town piazza, keep looking to your right. The stairs are tucked at the corner of the building behind a food stand. We spent a week in Amalfi. Being able to walk across the street to catch a bus was a big plus and we easily visited Capri and Pompeii from our room using the Sita busses. I highly recommend Hotel Fontana and hope to return some other day.

Excellent basic hotel (They do have some "special" rooms as well) right in the heart of Amalfi - the hotel parking service was really good and an essential for any stay in Amalfi - an even better idea is dont take a car and prevent any stress from italian driving habits! - the bus and boat services from Amalfi really are all you need. One word of caution there are a lot of steps in this hotel and no lift!

We had 2 rooms. Both of them had leakage of water from the shower box. At the end of the shower we had a swimming pool in the bathroom. Towels quality was bad, third bed had a bad matress. The second room , a double bedroom, the bed was disgusting, we had only nigthmares instead of good dreams. Location is fantastic as rooms were sea-front.

I stayed in room 117, which is a single room, but it had an excellent view of the sea and the piers (where also the SITA bus stop is). Staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast has a wide selection of Italian sweets, but also croissants and toast with cold cuts and marmelades. Entrance to the hotel (and internally) may be cumbersome for those who are not very mobile. But I will definately stay there again. I had a bargain: €200 in total for 4 nights

Just spent 22 days (April 9-30) in Italy as a single traveler: I stayed in 12 hotels priced from 50 to 80 Eur/night. I looked long and hard on the Internet to find the best hotels I could afford. In general, most of them are better than “budget/backpacker” hotels and you get great value for your buck. I tried 2 hotels in Amalfi, the first one being the Fontana. It is strategically located on the Piazza Duomo (tourist center of town) and less than 5 minutes from the Bus/Boat station. My big room and small bathroom looked a bit aged. The window opened on the Piazza which was noisy during the day but OK at night. The staff was great and so was the breakfast (buffet style: cakes, pies bread and croissant, juices, cheese, cereals, yogurt and coffee). Consider taking boats to go to Positano (25min) or Salerno (35min) instead of buses (1hr +): it is more expensive (5.5-7 Eur instead of 1.30) but it is faster, nicer, more beautiful and less crowded! Overall, at 50 Eur, it is a GOOD and cheap hotel. The more expensive double rooms are probably a better deal and a lot nicer.

You can see the hotel sign from the bus stop. The hotel is mid-way between the bus-harbor area and the piazza duomo, which couldn't be better. My terrace overlooked a street between the two and I could see either way. Only drawback is finding and using the narrow, steep outside stairs up; once you are on the second floor and Fontana's stairs it's first class, including the staff who ran out to take my luggage the rest of the way. Breakfast spread is very good by Italian buffet standards. This hotel is well worth the money.

Our first trip to Amalfi - beautiful! The hotel has the perfect position, right in the town centre, on one side of the main piazza. There were always people around, so there was a great atmosphere that you'd expect from such a central location. Our room looked out on to the square and the magnificent cathedral complex. Our room was clean, the staff were very friendly, breakfast was good; we can highly recommend the home-made pasta at the Ristorante da Maria just up the main street! It's easy to get on to buses to take you to Positano, Sorrento etc, along the magnificent coast road. All in all, a great holiday. We will be back!

Hotel staff at Fontana were pleasant with location and service quite good. Rooms were a little shabby, some mildew in bathrooms. Breakfast disappointing compared with other stays. Better refrigeration needed for dairy products eg milk and butter which had gone off. Stairs could be a problem for older travellers. We still enjoyed our stay.

The sea view was excellent, and even if the balcony was small, it was marwellous to sit there watching the life in the harbour. It is noisy in the harbour - even at night time, but we did not care. The employees were friendly, smiling and suggested good restaurants. Breakfast was not extraordinary, but OK.Even if the hotel could have been repainted in some rooms, we were very satisfied with the stay.

La Fontana was in a perfect location, the only downfall was the bathroom was very dirty and had to clean myself even thought we had asked to have it recleaned. It smelled of urine and the shower was not cleaned on daily basis. Other than that,it was perfect. I would only stay here, if the bathroom will be cleaner or I will not be coming back, after all, nobody should have to pay 170 per night and having to have to clean your own bathroom. Sorry, Paola Lombardo

Hotel Fontanta was a great choice for a hotel in Amalfi. The staff was very friendly and answered many of my questions regarding the area and how to get around. They also went out of their way to assist my friend who was having trouble with a phone card. The location could not have been better, with the hotel situated between the main town square and the coast, we were literally steps away from everything (including the beach and the bus stop to take you to other towns along the Amalfi Coast). I was very pleased with me stay at Hotel Fontana and would definitely stay there again.

Fantastic holiday. Two rooms booked. One quite noisy - could hear traffic etc. But chose it for central location so can't complain. Had difficulty finding the stairs into building at first - if you stand with your back to the sea, go round to the left, under the archway, and it's white steps next to the ice cream shop

The hotel location was perfect...we had a great view of the piazza and the mountains. The lady that greeted us at the desk was heaven-sent...she booked our train tickets and made us an itinerary that was well thought out and cost efficient. What we didnt' like about the hotel was that our room was very dirty! The bed sheets were stained and full of hair and the bathroom shower stall was way too small! We had to shower with the door open just to have enough room to shampoo our hair!

I loved the Fontana. As a solo traveler, I never expected such a spacious room, looking right over the piazza. This was not a quiet room, but I loved all the noise and action going on right outside my window. The room was very clean and I was surprised with the wonderful thick towels. Terrific breakfast. Wide array of food, if a bit on the sweet side. Very kind and helpful staff. I can't think of a nicer place to stay than Amalfi and the Fontana suited my needs completely.

We were very excited about staying at Fontana because of the wonderful things we read on Venere. It was everything we thought and more. Although my daughter and I loved the position, we were kept awake till 2am the first night by people in the square. The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on.....they were hard and too narrow and with the centre of the mattress being higher than the outer aspect, if felt like you were about to fall off. Some of the steps leading up to the hotel were individually high and fairly steep which made it difficult for someone older to get up with a suitcase. Thankfully the receptionist was very nice and carried it up the rest of the way after I hurt myself...and took it down again when I was leaving. I have been suffering back and pain and muscle spasms since that episode on the steps, and have had to seek medical and physiotherapy attention since returning home. Breakfast was good...a normal range of savory, (rolls, ham, cheese, butter, salami) and an abundance of sweet food and cake. If you are younger and steps that are uneven and high in height and rock hard beds aren't a problem, this is the place for you..if you like a comfy bed...forget it. My thanks to the young lady receptionist with the dark long curly hair...you were the most helpful person in your hotel...

We took the Eurostar from Rome into Salerno then took a taxi into Amalfi. The cost was 70 euro and well worth it especially if you have a lot of luggage. We arrived at the Hotel Fontana and were greeted by Luana at the front desk. We were quickly shown to our room which was spotless, with french doors overlooking the ocean. The room was equipped with a large bathroom and mini bar. The entire staff was very nice, polite and helpful, especially Luana. We were able to catch a boat to Capri right in front of the hotel. In summary, great hotel, staff, area restaurants and shopping. We will return!

We had everything we asked for, a double room, with a sea view, the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast - although the table itself was small, there was a good choice - various pastries, also rolls, cheeses and cold meats, as well as cereal, yoghurts and the usual drinks.

This is a great little hotel! One side of it overlooks the main square and duoma and the other side faces the sea! The rooms were nice and big and very clean. Would absolutely stay here again. Amalfi and Hotel Fontana are spectacular!

The staff were all welcoming except for one female who seemed to have forgotten how to make a smile, but otherwise, the location and cost performance was excellent.

We were thrilled with our choice of the Fontana. The hotel is clean, staff friendly and helpful. We were allocated a sea-view, which although overlooks the bus pull in area, was still quiet due to the double glazing. Our one and a half year old daughter slept soundly in her "princess" cot which the hotel was able to provide. The view of the sea, a stone's throw away, the next morning was breathtaking. The hotel room had a wonderful high, corniced ceiling and a small fridge. My only word of warning would be about the steps. There are around 20 steep steps to reach the reception area, then more steps up to the rooms. There is no lift. We will definitely be back!

The hotel is centrally located in Amalfi. Very good location, across the way from the ocean. The access to the hotel is hidden off to the side, and the stairs are steep. The room was generous in size, and the bathroom was OK but the shower stall (no tub) was small. Not much of an area to put things on, and no hooks in the bathroom.

Compared to where we stayed in Naples, this hotel was more pricey and for a smaller room, but was clean and in a good central location. We had a room off of the side street to the main square and didn't have a noise problem.

The Fontana occupies a great central location. Air conditioned rooms make a real difference. Nice people and very efficient. A room with a sea view can be a little noisy as you overlook the main road and the town's roundabout. However don't let that put you off - in addition to the great sea view you could watch the traffic mayhem and the comings and goings of the local population for hours and still never fail to be amazed at how there are not more accidents!! If you use the hotel's valet parking arrangements make sure you don't ask for the car on a Wednesday morning as it is kept in a garage remote from the hotel and there is a market that morning which means it is not accessible. Any other time is no problem and the parking arrangement works well - if a little pricey. We will definitely return in the future and would choose the Fontana again.

The entrance to the hotel is not obvious, I had to walk around the building a couple of times to find the twisty stone steps leading up to the first floor where the reception is (the building only has shops at ground floor level, not the hotel reception). The location of the hotel is fantastic, it is a stone's throw from the ferry port and where the buses stop. My room overlooked the main square of Amalfi & the steps of the church. The room was a good size with a very tall ceiling, it was clean and had good sound-proofing. The sink in the bathroom leaked water all over the floor though (this seems to be a common problem in Italy). The staff aren't particularly welcoming or responsive although they seem to be efficient. Check out time is 11am, even though the information in the room says 12pm - be careful of this, you don't want to be charged for an extra day. The only English language channel on the TV was CNN. Bring a bottle opener if you want to use the mini-bar, I think they expect you to use your teeth if you want a beer! The mini-bar prices were excellent though, only slightly dearer than store prices. I recommend this hotel, the location is superb, the rooms are fine and the staff are ok. The breakfast was basic but acceptable.

The hotel is right on the main square in Amalfi so you get the noisy traffic waking you up in the morning. Do yourself a favour and stay a little outside Amalfi...or even better spend a week in Capri!!

We had a fantastic holiday at the Fontana. Our balcony overlooking the square was wonderful. Most days a wedding took place on the steps leading up to the cathedral. One night there was a full orchestra and opera singers doing a Puccini opera!

If you decide to go to Amalfi, staying at Hotel Fontana will be the best choice. Location of the hotel is perfect. At the front, there is the main piazza, where you can feel the amazing atmosphere of Amalfi. At the back, you can watch the sun shining on the Mediterranean sea in the mornings. However, we were given a room which sees both Piazza and Amalfi Coast. The best experience at Fontana was to have a delicious Italian red wine at the balcony of our room, while we were eating lasagne and tortellini.

Amalfi is quite a small village so we did want to be in the centre to be close to the restaurants and sites etc. The Fontana couldn't have been more perfect for this. We had a room which directly looked over the square where the cafes are, the Duomo is and the restaurants are gathered. It provided great people watching opportunites and a great location for short walks to good restaurants (try Gemma - it is amazing!!) The room was a little boring and looked slightly old fashioned but for one night this was fine. Unfortunately it was the noise inside the hotel which was disturbing as the shutters closed out the noise outside. It wasn't overly noisy just little things like hearing your neighbours shower running which woke you in the morning. Other than that, great location (expensive parking 16€ a night) but worth a stay for one night for the people watching option!

There is no parking at the hotel, you will need to pay an additional 16 euros per day for that. There is no swimming pool. Overall, we had very good staying, great location.

We would stay again. This hotel is right on the square in Amalfi. We had ocean view rooms which worked perfectly because there was a three day festival going on while we were there on the other side of the hotel. Had we been on the square the noise would have been too much but being on the ocean side helped. The room was very clean. We had a quad with two 12 year old girls and the bathroom was nice and big enough for all. The AC worked in the room as well which was important as other hotels we stayed at were too warm. The staff was very helpful and very competent.

Reasonable hotel with large rooms. Make sure you ask for a sea view room as the staff are quite happy to accommodate requests. Not sure this was great value for money, but good for a short stay and very convenient for transport.

A good location for this hotel, in the center of the town: one side towards the cathedral and the other towards the sea. The rooms are equipped with daikin air-conditioning. The breakfast is fine (wide choice). It is better to use the parking facilities, otherwise you won't be able to park your car for a long time. When you arrive in Amalfi, just park your car with the taxis (use the warning lights), then go to the hotel reception with your luggage, it's just 50m nearby (under the arch, then to the right); you may ask to the tourist office. The driver will come to the reception to take out your car.

The Fontana Hotel is smack bang in the centre of Amalfi. It is a perfect location to the Piazza Duomo, restaurants, shops and right across the road from the water and beach. It was very clean, affordable and very welcoming and comfortable.

La correspondencia entre el costo y los sevicios es muy buena. El personal amable y cordial. Solo falla: la caja fuerte de recepcion es comun a todos los pasajeros. La habitacion era ruidosa porque daba sobre la Piazza Duomo.

Hotel Fontana was amazing! My boyfriend and I stayed in a double with a private bathroom with a view of the ocean and it was perfect (make sure you request for a room with a view of the ocean). We saw the pictures on the website and were thinking that it might be too good to be true, but the rooms were really great; high ceilings, very spacious, clean and modern bathroom, comfortable bed and pillows, even a small sitting area with a couch and tv. And the furniture and decorations in the room felt like we were in a museum, really nice antique furniture with fancy detailing and paintings on the wall were really neat. The breakfast was quite extensive and we had rolls, meats, cheeses, toast, cereal, pastries, and juices/tea/coffee. Another nice thing was that we arrived at 8am and although we weren't supposed to check in until noon, they had our room ready for us a few hours later and we were able to check in! I have already recommended Hotel Fontana to friends and would definitely stay there again. Furthermore, Amalfi is a great place to base yourself as we easily did day trips to the other coastal towns and Capri.

Ideally located within the town. Only drawback being the steep steps up to the entrance - could be a problem, especially when carrying suitcases. Reception staff friendly and welcoming. We were fortunate to be allocated two rooms overlooking the sea with a balcony - very nice. The spacious rooms could have done with a couple of easy chairs to relax and enjoy the view. Hotel directly opposite bus services and boat trips to say Capri etc. Make use of the car parking facilities arranged through the hotel as local parking is very restrictive.

The hotel Fontana was lovely. The staff were extremely plesant and helpful. Although the hotel is situated in the busiest part of the town, the double glazing ensured that we heard no outside noise. The hotel is in an excellent location-only a walk across the road to the beach with plenty of restaurants close by. The only thing that i would do differently on my return journey, is that on travelling from Salerno to Almalfi i would take the boat rather than bus. The coastal road left me feeling very sick, and i'm not one to suffer from travel sickness. Apart from that it was excellent.
