The Hotel Reina Christina ia a super find at a very low price for a 4 star hotel. This magnificent old hotel has been recently refurbished to its former grand status as the place to stay for royalty and statesman. We paid E60 for our room with a great view of the harbor. the breakfast which was included in the price, was the best we received in Spain or Portugal durinr our 1 month Iberian trip.

The reception staff were most unwelcoming and barely spoke to us. No one offered to help us take bags to our rooms. The dining room and food was OK but nothing special. When we left and asked the reception staff to call a cab, they said they had done so but after waiting more than 20 minutes, we accepted a lift from some fellow guests. We suggest they could benefit from a visit from the Hotel Inspector to teach them a bit about customer service. Although the rooms were fine and the surroundings very pleasant, we would not wish to go there again.

This was my first time in Algeciras, I wanted to go to Gibraltar. My hotel stayed was perfect, the staff was the best I encountered in my trip to the south. They went out of their way to book a tour to Tanger and to give us information about the area. The Hotel was clean ,breakfast excellent, garden beautiful.I wish they were more Reina Cristina

This hotel is really amazing. Its unbelievable the relationship between price and quality offered. Just a suggestion: avoid dinners, not very good and not included in the price.

Old hotel with no charm. Awful room with an awful furniture, awful AC, smallest TV on earth... Twin instead of the double room requested. Restaurant is a depressing buffet Definitely not recommended

The waiter (with the moustache) who served us our evening meal was excellent, he had a good sense of humour, he made us feel very welcome and explained the dishes we had ordered in detail. I really wish we had booked for more than one night. PS We left our swimming costumes out to dry on the balcony but forgot to take them with us when we left. Please would you check that they are dry and send them back to us

Lovely grounds. A good place to stop overnight before heading off for the ferry however missed our included breakfast as restaurant not open until 730 and we had to leave early. Huge rooms. Watch out for extra charges for internet use and use of in room safe quite expensive.

A very nice, quiet & charming hotel in an ancient palace with superb garden. Turistic services of good quality. We used our stay as a base for excursions. Excellent relationship between price/quality. Large free parking for cars & buses.

I found the staff gave adequate information to any questions I asked, but were not friendly. Only one bartender was friendly. I used a word he did not understand and he asked me what it meant, so he could improve his English skills.

Spent several nights in the Reina Cristina over the course of a month and was overall impressed with the place. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little old and some of the rooms are a bit faded, but the hotel is excellent value for money. Within walking (and wheeled suitcase dragging) distance of the Ferries to Morrocco so you won't have to shell out for a cab ride. The buffet dinner represents great value for money, but steer clear of the A La Carte restaurant it's not worth the extra cash at all. The wine list isn't bad and not too over priced. My main gripes are with the noise levels and internet access. This could be because the hotel is old or because of the rooms I was in, but the noise levels were quite high. Not terrible, but in one room we kept getting woken up by the people in the next room coming and going. The hotel, of course, is not responsible for inconsiderate guests. The internet access was a pay service at the beginning of the month, but they were having problems with the in room access (It worked great in the bars and public areas and in one of the rooms I had). At the end of the month they had switched to a free wireless service in the public areas and shutdown the pay access. The free one was truly dreadful and the only strong signal was when stood at reception! They have three machines in a "business centre" that have good access, but otherwise the free wireless was a step in the wrong direction. Finally the coffee at the breakfast buffet is truly dreadful, tastes like the worst kind of instant coffee, but the rest of the breakfast was good and gave a large and varied selection.

We picked the Reina Cristina to stay at because it was recommended on another site and was close to the ferry & train terminals (we were on our way to Tangier). The hotel is beautiful, quiet but still close to everything. On our way back to Paris we had the option of either staying the night in Tangier or heading back to Spain and we decided to head back to Spain so we could spend another night in this hotel.

Much as other people have described - a faded old gem. There was a welcoming fire in reception, expansive and ornate lounge, and the hotel sits in grounds with all rooms overlooking tranquil gardens rather than slightly manic Algeciras. Rooms have old mahogany style furniture, usually now only seen on the pages of ebay described as 'shabby chic'. In this environment they were just shabby and create the feel of being in the home of a rather elderly, but relatively wealthy and welcoming, relative. The bathroom was huge, modern and everything was spotlessly clean. The night we were there, there was an incredible storm - so windy that a tree in the grounds lost a major limb - and the hotel did feel very cosy. That said, the heating in the room was intermittant and we had to have the odd job man in to fix it, which then made such a racket we had to turn it off to get to sleep. Inevitably, it would not start up again in the morning. The bar is a treat - great for people watching. It was pre-christmas and there were a lot of middle age Spanish couples immaculately turned out in winter furs turning up for dinner; families with small children and an hilarious office christmas meal that kicked off at about 11pm which would have provided David Brent with more material than he could cope with. Most people were Spanish but there were some other European residents and communication with the staff was in English and fine. On first sight, there is not much to recommend Algeciras - it is a ferry town a bit like Dover and that is its primary function. However, scratch beneath the surface, wander around the streets and the squares off the main coastal drag, and it comes to life. Two of the best tapas bars I have ever been in. As a word or warning - the hotel had not received our booking from venere and without the printout would probably not have honoured it, so always take a copy! Value - ok as the web discount was substantial.

Hotel is old but nevertheless quaint and fairly well maintained. Adjacent to Port but large green area surrounds Hotel which offsets detracting features of the Port. We arrived during a conference or some form of business gathering. Only one person existed at the reception desk and was preoccupied with conference registrants so that our attempts to register were repeatedly deferred. Registration procedure seemed overly complicated which added to the delay.

The Reina Cristina is a beautiful and historic hotel, with something of an old world atmosphere. It's set in its own grounds just 10 mins walk from Algeciras station and 10 mins from the port. It's 4 star, yet not expensive. Highly recommended, the best place to stay between the train from London/Paris/Madrid and the ferry to Morocco!

A very mixed view. The reception was dire. They seemed unsure of whether they had the reservation or not. We were told beforehand the rooms wouldn't be ready before 2pm, I think, but a couple of hours after that we were still waiting, as were several others. Yet the location is really good -it has a great pool and bar. Lucky really since Algeciras itself is a dump. Tough to find a restaurant. The signposting to the hotel was good until the last moment, when the important last turning off the roundabout wasn't obvious enough to be noticed. You felt that with a bit more care and attention to detail this could be a really good hotel.

Beautiful grounds. Enormous, grand but somewhat faded hotel. Luxurious bathrooms. A/C in room broken on first day. Free wireless Internet advertised in hotel but not available. Buffet dinner and breakfast are extremely average, nothing to write home about, but breakfast is free and dinner not too expensive.

The room was one of 10 at street level. The hallway had an extremely strong disinfectant smell, less strong in the room, but requiring that the windows be left open. The porch contained a manhole cover labelled Algeciras Sewage Dep't. Upgrade was not available. Cannot recommend based on my stay.

Reina Cristina is a true oasis in what is a very tatty Spanish port; do not expect leasurely walks through Andalucian streets, Algeceras really is a working port with nothing to recommend it, bars or restaurents. We stayed there for 2 nights and used it as a base for the Costa de Luz and Gibraltar and the hotels position and ambiance over rides the town it is in. The bedrooms are spacious, clean but fairly basically furnished, however the interior and exterior of the hotel are simply stunning with wonderful gardens and decorations. Request a bedroom on the first floor rather then the ground floor to maximise the views of the garden. Breakfast is an English and continental buffet and plentiful. We didn't dine in the evening.

Beautiful hotel. The bathroom was very nice, with separate toilet and bath tub/shower room. The staff, as mentioned in other critiques were not concerned about service. They said there was no designation between smoking and nonsmoking rooms, yet there were signs on the room doors. We had reserved two rooms, and when we requested masking of the smoking smell in our room, they fumigated the wrong room. The food was not very good, but it was plentiful if you got to the meal early in the service. The price was reasonable, but the food was not of high quality. The overall hotel surroundings were lovely- the grounds are well groomed and grand.

Reina Cristina has old-school charm (not faded!) and was a welcome surprise in Algeciras. A single at Eur42 was unbelievable value, given the facilities, accomodation and history of the place (Churchill and Roosevelt stayed here, and many other famous names...) The large palmy terrace out back is perfect for sundowners - the background music from "Amarcord" transported me back to the '60s, white linen suits and an altogether more glamorous era... The dinner buffet was not-so-good though, but really, at the price I was paying, who can complain? Anyway, I filled up at the bar...

Hotel was very relaxing. Staff attended to complaints very quickly. Buffet food was above average, but A la Carte was only average. Breakfast was very good. Indoor pool was being refurbished and outdoor pool needed some work. Although hotel is near the port we couldn't hear any noise from there and when sitting on the very large sun terrace it could have been a million miles away. Excellent hotel if exploring the southwest of Spain. Very good value for money.

The hotel and its grounds are outstanding. Most guests seemed to be on an all-inclusive plan, which I was not aware of. We used the hotel as a base to visit Gibraltar. Hotels in La Linea would be more convenient for that purpose, but I could not find any available rooms there in my web search.

A hotel that caters to coach parties not individual visitors. The reception staff had no ability to handle a request to extend our stay and were quite useless, we found the location so convenient that we stayed anyway and booked again by e-mail but would otherwise not have stayed. It was typical of the standard of the reception staff that they were unable to find any rtrace of the e-amil booking and I had to show them the booking on my laptop.
