I went to Madrid to discover the city and the hostal was in a very good place for that- in the middle of everything. The location was also the main reason why I chose that hostal and the price also was low. You can´t get lost because the hostal is on the very lively and easelly reachable street. People have complained that there are lots of noises coming from outside at later hours- but that is Spain. First nights when I went to a sleep at ten, then people from the apartment across started to prepare dinner and had very lively conversation- and I just loved that typical part of spanish life style. I loved that it was not a modern beige building but a building with history and its own face. Durin the night it was a bit cold so I had to buy some warmer clothes for the night.

Great location. Staff were extremely kind when I got sick. Very thin walls so a bit noisy sometimes (especially when several drunken, foul mouthed englishmen arrived)

The major issue is renovations...they were so LOUD and intrusive it really made my stay less than desirable. Everything else was on par with what was paid...the location is fantastic and if the noise was non-existent then the stay would have been fine.

Location: 15 minutes walk from Atcha Station 10 minutes from the Puerto del Sol. 2 minutes from Plaza Santa Ana where there are all the bars and restaurants you could wish for. Special recommendation - Museo del Jamon for good value beer/wine and tapas. 2 minutes down Calle Atocha towards the station. Minor irritation is that you need to ring the doorbell to get let in.

Stay for free time to visit the city. Hostal very good for the central location. I needed to change reservation one day before, but I could not do it:It was not possible to do it on-line and the venere.com web site suggest to contact the hotel, the hotel told me that even if they change reservation, venere.com should have charge my credit card for one night. This was a very bad problem for me:I necessary had to go in Madrid on that date because of a bad electronic system!

I have stayed, end of June 2008, at Martin Hotel in a completely new renovated triple room. Nicely decorated and with new and excelent bathroom and A/C, hotel is perfectly located, 5 minutes away from Porta del Sol. Staff was friendly and helpful. Excelent price/quality/location rate. I warmly recomend this hotel to other turists.

We stayed in Madrid twice during our one week trip to Spain in May 2008, both times at Hostal Martin. We booked 2 rooms: a single and a double. We were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the whole establishment, having in view some comments we have found on the Internet on this subject. We were lucky to find a very helpful receptionist who was speaking good English (and that’s not too easy to find in Spain)!:) The first time we got rooms facing the interior courtyard, therefore the noise was at an acceptable level. The second time though, we got the only available rooms and they were facing the front of the building. Thanks God it was for one night only! The noise was unbelievable. My wife couldn’t sleep at all because of the traffic and the noise made by "happy" people enjoying the night-life in Madrid. The location is exceptional though. The Hostal is situated in a walking distance to all major attractions. We were extremely happy & pleasantly surprised with the fact that the Hostal offered free Internet access in the main Reception Hall. I would definitely recommend it to my friends looking for decent and inexpensive accommodation for a short stay in Madrid.

A great spot for checking out Madrd. Close to the Plaza and lots of other little bars and places to eat. Very simple accomidations though, similar to a Hostel. Very friendly english speaking staff are there 24 hours. Beds were very very clean. Spaces were very small, electrical was a little wonky. A very good deal for the $$ though.

This is the worst HOSTEL we have stayed till now. After this unpleasant accomodation, I will never put up in HOSTEL any more, especially in Madrid. This city seems not welcome foreigners around the world. As follows I will tell you how awful service they gave us: 1.We booked this "Martin" hostel from the net. Ater we arrived in Madrid in the morning, we hurried to the hostel by the map. However, when we got to the apartment they rent, there are 4 hostels from floor 1 to 4. We went to the 3rd floor "Martin" hostel, but nobody answers. After 20 minutes, we finally found the hostel reception. In fact ,these 4 hostels belong to one entity. At last, they gave us a room not belongs to the MARTIN.Of course, the rooms are different from web pages quoted. 2.The room we stayed was very small, and a bad smell.Except a small table and a chair, there is nothing else to put things. 3.That night was very cold, we could not find any blanket to cover. We have not choice, only covered the thin coverlet. The second day I asked the stuff of the hostel why there is nothing to cover, but they questioned us inverse, why don't we asked them about the blanket! 3.The second day, after the waitress changed the article for use, I found only one bath towel but still damp, even more, there is a black long hair sticked to the towel, which makes me even throw up. 4.4.We stayed only two days, everying in the room is lacked, I have to ask anything. However, the service they supported to us was very bad. It seems that they need not service to the guests, they were leaderships. They thought this is the real "HOSTEL" but not hotel, there is large difference between them. As for me ,that is only a big ridiculous excese At last, we suggest the travellers will not book this hostel. Do not be caught with chaff like us!

This is a great bargain in a very central location. Hotel Martin was easy to get to and from everywhere in the city. It also felt very safe. For those new to Madrid - if you want to get sleep or sleep in get an interior room. Madrilenos eat dinner at 10pm and party till 5am. Sleep only happens from 5:30-10:30am! The room was clean. The shower was good - the toilet was a little tight. But you really can not beat the price for the location. Besides when in Madrid - I hope you are not there to SLEEP! Very clean. Don't be misguided by the appearance outside.

The Hotel is situated in building which has on every floor another Hostal. There is one front desk for all of them at the first floor. The room was extremely small. We had one big bed (as the guy of the hotel called it) however the bed was very small. I would recommend to ask for a room with two beds. The rooms are very noisy, which can be a problem if you are next to a room for 4 people. The surroundigs are fine. Very close to the metro and at walking distance of main big tourist sites.

The staff was very helpful to us. When we arrived, the woman at the front desk was nice enough to let us know that there was a procession that was going to come down the street right in front of the hotel (this was Good Friday). She also gave some other information about finding bull fight tickets when we asked about it. The room was very clean and quiet for the most part, except that we were right next to the community bathroom, so each morning people would come in and take a shower and we could hear them slam the door shut. The room was very small, but this was not unexpected. If we had both our pieces of luggage out on the floor, it was difficult to get past one another without crossing over the bed. We were the one of the last rooms at the end of a long hallway. This is not a major complaint at all. I expected a small room for the price that we were paying. I would recommend this hotel. It was very close to Puerta del Sol, and of course from there, you can choose to go in any direction. The Sol metro stop is very close by as well.

Because it was so cheap we really didn't mind the drawbacks so we are staying there again in September! Hostal Martin is the noisiest accomodation I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The walls are paper thin - we could hear the conversations of other guests very clearly, along with their televisions. Our room was next to the laundry room, so we had the pleasure of listening to washing machines, and tumble dryers at all hours. On our last bleary-eyed morning we had to endure excruciatingly loud drilling in the courtyard of the property from 7.30am. This is not a place to stay if you value your ear drums.

Hostal Martin is fine for those on a tight budget who don't mind rather dingy surroundings. The entry to the building was shocking. The rooms, however, were recently refinsihed, and the bathroom, though small and minimally equipped, was fine. The walls of the hotel are very thin, allowing all sorts of noises to penetrate. Many noises came from people walking down the long hallway. The woman at the desk was very helpful and cordial. The place is not well marked; the sign at the outside doorbell suggests that that the hotel is on the third floor, when in fact the reception and most rooms are on the first. Because of the dinginess of the building and the noise, we vacated after the first of three nights. I was surprised that we had to pay a one night penalty (despite having stayed there one night and despite having informed them on the evening of that first night that we intended to leave. This struck us as unfair. To repeat, for those on a tight budget, this place would do nicely; the location is very favorable.

Hostal Martin is in a prime location, so we rarely had to use the Metro. Admittedly first impressions were bad as the outside of the building and entrance are quite run down. However, we were soon to learn that this is very much the norm with old buildings in Madrid. Once we were allocated our rooms we were pleasantly surprised! We found the propietors very friendly and helpful and it ws a great advantage that they were able to speak English! The down points are that there was building work going on around the building so we weren't able to have a lie in and the hot water got turnt off just as I was having a shower! Overall we found Hostal Martin great value for money and in a great location. We would certainly stay there again. Our stay in Madrid was very enjoyable and memorable despite the snow!

As a first time visitor to Madrid, I felt that the directions to Hostal Martin could have been a little better - should'nt be a problem to someone who knows the city. The welcome was great once I had found someone and the room was more than sufficient, with en suite facilities. Hostal Martin, as I discovered, is in an excellent location to explore the main part of the city, Gran Via being only a 10 minute walk away, and although the Martin district seems a little run down, at night it takes on its own character with no end of lively bars and entertainment. Atocha railway station is also only a short subway ride away. What I was looking for was cheap and clean accommodation for a short business trip to Madrid, what I got was considerably better than I expected. I would definately stay there again.
