The location is excellent (you can reach all the sights by foot). The rooms are clean and spacious enough. The stuff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good. Good value for the money, especially if you're traveling for leisure. The only disadvantage was that our room was on the fourth floor (entrance to the hotel on third and reception on first), with lot of halls to pass between entrance and our room, but we got used to that quite quickly.

Located very close to Atocha station and within walking distance to most major attractions. The street was quieter than I had imagined and our room faced inward to a courtyard so no noise from street anyway. Our problem with noise came from a very noisy couple next door - with their windows open it was impossible to ignore. Just bring ear plugs!

The staff speak fluent English. The rooms are small but clean and adequate. The TV is only in Spanish. No English channels. The location is about the best in Madrid. Central, a short walk (10 mins) to the Puerta del Sol (the heart of Madrid) and Plaza Major. One block from Plaza de Angelo, a scenic square with many bars/restaurants and outdoor seating. Five minutes walk to the old town with the greatest concentration of bars in Madrid. I spent a week there for the second time and I plan to return to hotel martin for another week next year. There are as many attractions outside Madrid as inside - Toledo, Segovia, Avilla, El Escorial, Aranjuez.

Good little hostal in a great location. The stuff is very helpful, all of them speak English. Great value for money. A;though they can improve one or two things: have more visiable sign on Martin from the outside...hot water wasn't really hot and I had problems with WI-FI signal.

The location was excellent. Probably the best location in Town. Most helpfull, English speaking staff, 24 hour manned reception. Very close to bars and restaurants. Just round the corner from Plaza de Angel. Also 20 min walk to the famous museums, Plaza Major and Puerta del Sol. The subway is cheap but not needed. Lots of cafes nearby. The rooms were clean. Not spacious, but adequate. They have a lift and a left luggage room. I shall certainly be staying there again on my next trip to Madrid. Tip ; the bus from the airport is 2 Euros and runs every 15 mins to the Atocha station. The Prado is free from 1800 to 2000 weekdays. Take a phrase book, few of them speak English. Do try the ice cream. It is tough trying to find good beer in Madrid. Try "Naturbier", Plaza de Angel.

The staff can speak English fluently, so it's very convenient for us, since we don't know any Spanish. We like the map they offered us, and the restarant they recogmend. The room we got is not on the side of Via Atocha, so it's fairly quiet. We has not travelled a lot in Europe, but we like this hotel.

We were relocated to another location, which is a student residence, which is much quieter, since it is on a small street with little car traffic. Old style, small elevator is available, but the room size is excellent for the price in comparison to any major touristic cities in Europe. Efficient staff.

Excellent location, price and accommodation. The building is old, but all the interior is new. The bedroom and bathroom are very spacious and clean. Has cabinets, safes, coffee table and sofa. The room is well heated in winter. One suggestion for those arriving by Atocha station and is with the heavy suitcase: better get a taxi.

One of the best hostels in Madrid. Just a few blocks away from Plaza del Sol, and from Atocha train station, very well connected with public transportation. Be warned: the reception is in the FIRST floor, hostel CERVELO. In fact, my room (single with bathroom) was in that same floor, so don´t forget to get there first. Super clean rooms, fast WI-FI connection, flat screen TV, very complete bathroom, three towels (changed daily even if you don´t use all of them), reception open 24 hours with very charming staff. You will find some nice bars and restaurants a few steps away, and also some CHINOS, with excellent prices for food and liquids. The rooms are NOT acoustically isolated, so you may hear your neighbors if they speak aloud. Anyway, that won´t be an issue, unless they are extremely noisy. 100% recommended !!!

Based on what I heard about Madrid hostels, I had very low expectations. Even having a housekeeping service everyday surprised me greatly. The bathroom is small but has all the essentials and is recently renovated, everything looks new & shiny. Again the room is small but enough if you are spending most of the day out (we went to the room almost only for showering & sleeping). The hotel is less than 10 min walk to Puerta del Sol, 10 min walk to Plaza de Mayor, about 15 min walk to the Royal Palace and the Opera, about 15 min walk to Atocha railway station and less than 20 min walk to the Retiro garden so the location is excellent. There are groceries and markets nearby, if you need anything. The street is busy with cars and buses all day but if you take a room facing the inward side, you won't hear any traffic noise. However, people walking down the corridor may always be heard. Price/performance rate is very good, I could stay there if I ever visited Madrid again. I also saw people with young children so I guess families can feel comfortable, too. The reception staff speak English, which is very rare in Madrid, so you can handle your problems with them.

I went to Madrid to discover the city and the hostal was in a very good place for that- in the middle of everything. The location was also the main reason why I chose that hostal and the price also was low. You can´t get lost because the hostal is on the very lively and easelly reachable street. People have complained that there are lots of noises coming from outside at later hours- but that is Spain. First nights when I went to a sleep at ten, then people from the apartment across started to prepare dinner and had very lively conversation- and I just loved that typical part of spanish life style. I loved that it was not a modern beige building but a building with history and its own face. Durin the night it was a bit cold so I had to buy some warmer clothes for the night.

Location: 15 minutes walk from Atcha Station 10 minutes from the Puerto del Sol. 2 minutes from Plaza Santa Ana where there are all the bars and restaurants you could wish for. Special recommendation - Museo del Jamon for good value beer/wine and tapas. 2 minutes down Calle Atocha towards the station. Minor irritation is that you need to ring the doorbell to get let in.

Stay for free time to visit the city. Hostal very good for the central location. I needed to change reservation one day before, but I could not do it:It was not possible to do it on-line and the venere.com web site suggest to contact the hotel, the hotel told me that even if they change reservation, venere.com should have charge my credit card for one night. This was a very bad problem for me:I necessary had to go in Madrid on that date because of a bad electronic system!

We stayed in Madrid twice during our one week trip to Spain in May 2008, both times at Hostal Martin. We booked 2 rooms: a single and a double. We were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the whole establishment, having in view some comments we have found on the Internet on this subject. We were lucky to find a very helpful receptionist who was speaking good English (and that’s not too easy to find in Spain)!:) The first time we got rooms facing the interior courtyard, therefore the noise was at an acceptable level. The second time though, we got the only available rooms and they were facing the front of the building. Thanks God it was for one night only! The noise was unbelievable. My wife couldn’t sleep at all because of the traffic and the noise made by "happy" people enjoying the night-life in Madrid. The location is exceptional though. The Hostal is situated in a walking distance to all major attractions. We were extremely happy & pleasantly surprised with the fact that the Hostal offered free Internet access in the main Reception Hall. I would definitely recommend it to my friends looking for decent and inexpensive accommodation for a short stay in Madrid.

This is the worst HOSTEL we have stayed till now. After this unpleasant accomodation, I will never put up in HOSTEL any more, especially in Madrid. This city seems not welcome foreigners around the world. As follows I will tell you how awful service they gave us: 1.We booked this "Martin" hostel from the net. Ater we arrived in Madrid in the morning, we hurried to the hostel by the map. However, when we got to the apartment they rent, there are 4 hostels from floor 1 to 4. We went to the 3rd floor "Martin" hostel, but nobody answers. After 20 minutes, we finally found the hostel reception. In fact ,these 4 hostels belong to one entity. At last, they gave us a room not belongs to the MARTIN.Of course, the rooms are different from web pages quoted. 2.The room we stayed was very small, and a bad smell.Except a small table and a chair, there is nothing else to put things. 3.That night was very cold, we could not find any blanket to cover. We have not choice, only covered the thin coverlet. The second day I asked the stuff of the hostel why there is nothing to cover, but they questioned us inverse, why don't we asked them about the blanket! 3.The second day, after the waitress changed the article for use, I found only one bath towel but still damp, even more, there is a black long hair sticked to the towel, which makes me even throw up. 4.4.We stayed only two days, everying in the room is lacked, I have to ask anything. However, the service they supported to us was very bad. It seems that they need not service to the guests, they were leaderships. They thought this is the real "HOSTEL" but not hotel, there is large difference between them. As for me ,that is only a big ridiculous excese At last, we suggest the travellers will not book this hostel. Do not be caught with chaff like us!

This is a great bargain in a very central location. Hotel Martin was easy to get to and from everywhere in the city. It also felt very safe. For those new to Madrid - if you want to get sleep or sleep in get an interior room. Madrilenos eat dinner at 10pm and party till 5am. Sleep only happens from 5:30-10:30am! The room was clean. The shower was good - the toilet was a little tight. But you really can not beat the price for the location. Besides when in Madrid - I hope you are not there to SLEEP! Very clean. Don't be misguided by the appearance outside.

The Hotel is situated in building which has on every floor another Hostal. There is one front desk for all of them at the first floor. The room was extremely small. We had one big bed (as the guy of the hotel called it) however the bed was very small. I would recommend to ask for a room with two beds. The rooms are very noisy, which can be a problem if you are next to a room for 4 people. The surroundigs are fine. Very close to the metro and at walking distance of main big tourist sites.

The staff was very helpful to us. When we arrived, the woman at the front desk was nice enough to let us know that there was a procession that was going to come down the street right in front of the hotel (this was Good Friday). She also gave some other information about finding bull fight tickets when we asked about it. The room was very clean and quiet for the most part, except that we were right next to the community bathroom, so each morning people would come in and take a shower and we could hear them slam the door shut. The room was very small, but this was not unexpected. If we had both our pieces of luggage out on the floor, it was difficult to get past one another without crossing over the bed. We were the one of the last rooms at the end of a long hallway. This is not a major complaint at all. I expected a small room for the price that we were paying. I would recommend this hotel. It was very close to Puerta del Sol, and of course from there, you can choose to go in any direction. The Sol metro stop is very close by as well.

Quite difficult to find when getting to the main entrance. The building has several entrances and the Hotel is not easy to find.

Location was v central, rooms were clean and for a two star were great. Staff were helpful and welcoming. Walls were thin so room was a bit noisy but having read reviews I had packed a pair or earplugs and requested a room on the courtyard side. For the price, especially in comparison to Madrid prices in general, this is a great value place

Over all we were pleased with Hostal Martin, paricularly the location which was so close to the museums that we wanted to see. Our only complaint was that I had made reservations a long time in advance & requested a quiet interior room & we were right on the street where it was extremely noisy.

Just no good. Hopelessly disorganized. Extremely noisy. Air conditioning did not work in extremely hot weather. Bedding left unchanged, and sheets so worn that they actually tore after three days. Not even enough soap (one bar for two guests over three days !)

Because it was so cheap we really didn't mind the drawbacks so we are staying there again in September! The main problem was that on arrival we were redirected to another Hostal and were then accommodated in a different building which was student accommodation. You say the Hostal is two star but I think it is only one star.

What a gem! Don't let the outside put you off. The Hostal Martin portion of the combined hostals (the other is Hostal Cervelo) has been completely renovated and the room in which I stayed was quite nice. The location is perfect for sightseeing. Good value for the money.

Hostal Martin is the noisiest accomodation I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The walls are paper thin - we could hear the conversations of other guests very clearly, along with their televisions. Our room was next to the laundry room, so we had the pleasure of listening to washing machines, and tumble dryers at all hours. On our last bleary-eyed morning we had to endure excruciatingly loud drilling in the courtyard of the property from 7.30am. This is not a place to stay if you value your ear drums.

Hostal Martin is fine for those on a tight budget who don't mind rather dingy surroundings. The entry to the building was shocking. The rooms, however, were recently refinsihed, and the bathroom, though small and minimally equipped, was fine. The walls of the hotel are very thin, allowing all sorts of noises to penetrate. Many noises came from people walking down the long hallway. The woman at the desk was very helpful and cordial. The place is not well marked; the sign at the outside doorbell suggests that that the hotel is on the third floor, when in fact the reception and most rooms are on the first. Because of the dinginess of the building and the noise, we vacated after the first of three nights. I was surprised that we had to pay a one night penalty (despite having stayed there one night and despite having informed them on the evening of that first night that we intended to leave. This struck us as unfair. To repeat, for those on a tight budget, this place would do nicely; the location is very favorable.

We were very pleased with our rooms in the hotel. We did enjoy our second stay more, because the first stay, the rooms were on the street. The second stay, the rooms were on the courtyard and much quieter. We would gladly stay in this hotel again.
