Built in the 14th century, the hotel is housed in the different wings and the farm building of a former monastery. Several of the hotel meeting rooms bear the names of emperors and other prominent people of the past who were hosted here. 

Meals are served in the Michelin Star awarded Grand Restaurant Karel V, the Goeie Louisa Brasserie, and the Caves Caroli Bar, which is located in the medieval arched vault beneath the hotel. Its 12 conference and meeting rooms are equipped with audio-visual technology, and guests of the luxurious hotel can use the fitness and wellness facilities, including a sauna, steam room, and solarium, all of which can be found in the Roman building.

By car
Via the A2 motorway (from Amsterdam, Schiphol) towards Utrecht: take exit 8 for Centrum. Proceed towards Centrum, passing straight at the roundabout, and the Jaarbeurs. Go under the railway overpass, and take a right turn towards Centrum. Follow the sign for Station, and take the above road, a parallel road passes under the shopping arcades of Hoog Catharijne. After these two roads have come together again, take the first possible street on the left towards Museumkwartier. After crossing the bridge, take a left turn onto Geertebolwerk, a dead end street. (Please, make sure you do not take the bicycle path!) Grand Hotel Karel V is located at the end of Geertebolwerk on the right hand side.
Via the A12 motorway (from direction Amsterdam, Schiphol) to Utrecht: follow directions to Jaarbeurs Zuid. Take exit 17 Kanaleneiland. At the end of the exit ramp, at the traffic lights, turn onto Kanaleneiland. Turn right, at the first roundabout, towards Hoograven/Lunetten. Just before the 2nd bridge (yellow / blue railing), take a left turn onto the Jutfaseweg. Stay on this road and take a left at the second traffic lights. Turn right under the railroad overpass towards Centrum. At the 2nd traffic lights, take a left turn, which takes you onto the Catharijnesingel. Then proceed like before.

Grand Hotel Karel V has a maximum of 80 parking spaces. This is not sufficient to meet all requests and therefore parking is not guaranteed. The parking lots at the premises of the hotel can only be used by hotel guests staying overnight, or having dinner at the Grand Restaurant Karel V.

Still, you can park in one of the 4 parking garages within a range of 100 to 350 meters (100 to 400 yards) from the hotel.
